NEWS December 2005 - March 2006 Filipinas Circa” on its First Time in JGSS By Filipino Evolution By Blanche Agatha A. Liwanag Mary Clarence dela Viña and Ma. Lorelaine Nolledo A one-of-a-kind production was held last March 4, 2006 in JGSS. This was the “Filipinas Circa 2006”, a collaboration of various clubs namely, JGSS Children’s Choir, the High School Glee Club, JGSS Dance Troupe, JGSS Theater Arts, with the Student Council, Parents Council, Faculty and Staff, and Pastorelle Sisters. The production was shown in three-time performances: 9:00-11:00 a.m. was the slot for the Kinder up to Primary level students: 2:00-4:00p.m. was the time allotted for the Intermediate level and 3 rd Year and 4 th Year High School students and the time granted to guests, 1st year and 2nd year students was from 6:00-8:00p.m. The clubs mentioned took turns in performing on stage. On the first part, our country was honored by the JGSS Children’s Choir who led the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. The Opening Remarks were given by Mrs. Elma Novelo, teacher of the High School Department and one of the advisers of the SCO. The “Song of Creation” was sung by the High School Glee Club led by Mr. Arthur Medina as their choirmaster. The “Song of Creation” was also interpreted by the JGSS Dance Troupe. The mood was changed into nationalistic when the JGSS Children’s Choir sang an ethnic song entitled “Idemdem Malida” followed by Dance Troupe’s “Dugso”, “Makatanod”, and “Uya-uy”. It was time for the Dulaang Munting Pastol (Theater Arts) to give their share of their talents on stage through their plays, “Planting of the Cross of the Spaniards” and “Baptism”. A short story showing the life of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal was also included in the skit. Again, the JGSS Dance Troupe returned on stage to perform three dances – “Cariñosa”, “Bayluhan”, and “Bailode Los Pateros”. 5 A speech choir was also shown by the Theater Arts members in their “Kalayaan”. The part one of the production was ended by an intermission number from the Parent’s Council Organization with the famous song “Gasolina”, they were cheered by the audience as they dance on-stage. As the second part started, the audience got even more excited. The JGSS Dance Troupe opened it with the dance “Salakot”. The Children’s Choir sung folksongs medley with the joint performance of the Dance Troupe’s “Kasadyahan”. Finally, the Faculty and Staff Organization (FSO) appeared and danced “Tango”. “Maalaala Mo Kaya” was sung by the High School Glee Club. The FSO again displayed their dancing prowess in their “Boogie” and “Swing”. Edsa Revolution was reenacted by the Theater Arts, Sr. Shirley Torrente and Mr. Edelberto Abordo’s performance of “Magkaisa”. Again, the SCO and the Dance Troupe appeared through a pop dance. All these showing off of talents was highlighted by the final song “Mabuhay Ka Filipino”, a rendition by all of the performers. PCO in their well applauded number (Photo by Rudy Liwanag) Every year the past historic events of our country are being recalled by presenting programs, by giving parties and celebrations, in that way we can honor our Filipino Heroes. The Shepherdines celebrated the 41st Foundation Day last February 11 by presenting programs about Filipino Evolutions. It was highlighted by selected pupils from different grade levels. The Junior and Senior Kinder showed how Negrito lived. The lifestyle and habitats of Indones was portrayed by the Grade 1. While the Grade 2 did an interpretative dance of Malays culture. The Filipino was influenced by the Chinese, an interpretative dance from the Grade 3 gave meaning to it. Through the years, our country had many riches and wealth that’s why many countries want to conquer it. The persecution of the Filipinos for over 300 years was dramatized by the Grade 4 pupils. Grade 5 pupils presented how Japanese governed the country. Last were the Americans, who freed us from the Land of the Rising Sun and were given life by the Grade 6 pupils. Check Out the Booths! By Blanche Agatha Liwanag Different booths are practically made during Foundation days for fun and funds. During the 41st Foundation Day of JGSS, different organizations made different booths for the special celebration. SCO booths, the Jail Booth where some students get wanted and were put in jail! They also had the House of Magic booth, Friendship booth, and Novelty booth. The following booths were managed by SCO High school Department: the Henna tattoo booth, the face painting booth and dedication booth. FSO booths were Videoke for a Cause and Ice Cream & Cotton candy booths. For the PCO booths, they sold clothes and other stuffs for cheap prices. And the last but not the least is the JGSCC roletta and tambiolo booth. 6 NEWS December 2005 - March 2006 A Successful Feast of Señor de Sto. Concepcion By Dianne Joy D. Saporsantos My Lovely Prokopia (or My Name is Kim Sam Soon) is a romantic comedy that is often touted as Korea’s answer to UK’s “Bridget Jones”. ``My Name is Kim S a m Soon is also a comically describing a contract romance between pastry chef Kim Sam-Soon and Hyun JinHon, a young chairman of renowned confectionery. At the end, the two main characters Kim and Cyrus will realize that they have feelings for each other and will end up together. The drama starts off with Sam Soon losing her job on Christmas Eve and also being dumped by her boyfriend. She runs accidently into the men’s bathroom and sulks. Hyun Jin-Hun aka Sam Shik finds her and gives her a bit of advice which doesn’t seem to help Sam Soon’s situation. Embarrassed Sam Soon runs out of the restroom. Sam Soon is your extraordinary girl. She’s funny, goofy, bold, and not afraid to state her opinion. To some, she appears ill-mannered but to others, she’s just a little bit dangerous! Starring Hyun Bin and Kim Sun Ah, No wonder it is the highest rating Korean drama last year…the drama is full of interesting and attractive characters. All characters have unique personalities and intriguing traits. The plot of the comedy is simple. But it is definitely a treat to everyone. You will be able to relate to some characters in the story. They get their brokenhearted, get over their failed romance and move on. They work, get tired, laugh and cry. Nanny McPhee is a good “watch once” film, that adults and children will surely enjoy and a fun family movie with good lessons for the kids on manners and morality. The story starts to unfold with a widower so depressed with the lost of his wife and so dreadful as their seven naughty and unruly children were all left under his care. With him is a pretty maid wellloved by the kids (surprisingly!) with a hidden agenda. After 17 nannies who cannot stand the bad conduct of the children and nanny agencies which patience are all exhausted, a magical lady arrives. She has a large nose and bulbous, beady eyes with thick brows, and warts with hair, Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson). As scary as her you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go.” Another problem arises: the widower must marry within a month or else the family will eat nothing. Will Nanny McPhee’s presence help the family or break it? Nanny McPhee sets up an ideal for the children to aspire to, but it is a different, more humane one than typical, one not of perfection but continual improvement. We know the kids will sometimes still be unruly, but they’ve learned to seek to better themselves. Director Kirk Jones describes it thus: “Nanny McPhee walks into a family full of good people with good intentions and makes them all see their own goodness and each other’s goodness. She doesn’t make them feel good. She shows that they’re already good.” Movie Review B l u e M o o n : A story of second chances By Marie Claire Antonette M.
