Yes, I do know it is only June but for the CDCC, our fiscal year is coming to a close and what a year it has been! We had another great LCD Class. I am very proud of this group for their dedication and determination in tackling a big community service project. You may have followed their project on Facebook and in the Chamber Connection, but for those who did not they undertook a major landscaping design project for the Delaware Aero Space Education Foundation at their site in Smyrna. They did a phenomenal job! Next time you are in the Smyrna area, stop by the Delaware Aero Space facility and see for yourself the great work the LCD Class of 2012 completed! Kudos to you all!!! We hosted our first Honorary Mayor Election, and WOW what an election it was. We broke all the campaign rules by encouraging our members to vote early and vote often and our rule breaking didn’t stop there. In our election you could buy votes – yes that is right – BUY VOTES!! As staff, we still have not stopped smiling at the huge success of this Election, and of course, we have to thank our magnificent candidates: Steve Artz (who won the title), Orthodonics on Silver Lake, PA; Adrienne Hawes, WSFS Bank; Tonda Parks, Delaware State News; Carolyn Phinney, Signs by Tomorrow; and Stephanie Turner, Faw Casson. These five individu- als went above and beyond to make this first Honorary Election one to remember! In regards to our membership, we have seen a steady upward motion. As of April 30, ten months into the year, we were back up to 770 members and we have maintained an 87+% in retention. Speaking of membership, this year we completely re-vamped our membership packets to professionally illustrate our benefits and programs to prospective new members. For the first time, the CDCC published a Kent County Map which by the way, is one of the most frequently asked for pieces of literature promoting our county. 39 Chamber Members participated in this new CDCC publication. We also saw substantial increases in the attendance of CDCC events: Night at the Races; the Milcon Breakfast; the Holiday Gift Auction; the Military Affaire; the Christmas Party; the 55 + Active Adult Expo, and the Bluesuiters Golf Tournament. It was great having so many of you join us! None of these goals would have been reached without you, our members! We thank you for your continued participation and your continued support. We are looking forward to a great 2013 and we very much looking forward to working with all of you! The CDCC – the place where Good Networking provides Good Connections that result in Good Business! Gov. Jack Markell joined Patrick McCullar, President and CEO of the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (“DEMEC”), and the Mayors or town officials of Newark, New Castle, Middletown, Clayton, Smyrna, Dover, Milford, Lewes and Seaford to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) that underscores their shared commitment toward making municipal energy rates more competitive in order to spur job creation, while preserving the core functions and services provided to residents and businesses in the municipal service territories. “Over the last three months, DEMEC and the towns rolled up their sleeves and worked diligently with us to find a way to lower electric utility rates without shifting the cost to the other essential and valuable services the towns provide, “ said Governor Markell. “This memorandum of understanding strikes that balance. It sends a clear signal to businesses that Delaware and our towns and municipalities are ready to compete for jobs.” Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the nine DEMEC municipalities have agreed to lower retail electric rates by at least 10% in the next three years, starting this year. In addition, to the extent they have not done so already, each municipality will authorize an “economic development rate” for the purpose of incentivizing job creation in the DEMEC municipalities and attracting new employers to locate in Delaware municipalities. Finally, each municipality has agreed to cap for the next five years at FY ’12 amounts the revenue that they transfer from their electrical utility to their general fund budget. In return, as long as the DEMEC municipalities abide by the MOU, the Governor has agreed to oppose any legislation that would allow thirdparty supply in the municipal electric territories. ”DEMEC and its member communities share Governor Markell’s goal of making Delaware one of the most attractive and competitive locals in the world,” said Patrick McCullar, CEO of DEMEC. “We recognize how important lower energy costs are to Delaware and appreciate the opportunity to work closely with the Governor toward our common goals.” The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Governor and Mr. McCullar, who is authorized to sign on behalf of the DEMEC municipalities via a resolution enacted in each DEMEC municipality. A copy of the final MOU is attached. When you want to know what is happening on the economic development front in Kent County and in the State of Delaware you go to the experts that make our counties and our State grow, and this is exactly what the Leadership Class of 2012 did for their Economic Development Day on May 3rd. The day started with a State Wide view of what is happening on the economic development front with the Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO), Alan Levin. Director Levin outlined DEDO’s role in attracting businesses to Delaware. He provided the class with the example of how the State worked to get Amazon to come to Delaware. He also spoke about the importance of creating a relationship with prospective developers to not just get their business to Delaware, but also to make them a part of the Delaware fabric. Following Director Levin, the LCD Class got a business partner’s perspective from both Josh Twilley, President of Incorporating Services, LTD and John Pastor, Director for the State of Delaware International Trade and Development Office. Josh started by outlining the process of incorporating in the State of Delaware, and he then surprised the class with the number of companies incorporated in the State - 945,000. The surprises continued as John Pastor talked about the number of companies in Delaware that export to the tune of an amazing total of $5.50 Billion dollars. Of course the next question for John was where are we exporting to? John identified the top five countries receiving goods/services from Delaware: Canada; United Kingdom; China; Japan; and Germany. To bring our economic development closer to home the class then heard from the Director of the Kent Economic Partnership, Jim Wad- dington. Jim explained the various processes involved in the economic development process and highlighted two projects the county is focused on: the Kent County Sports Complex and the Air Cargo Development. Now that they had heard all about economic development it was time for the class to see it in action, and see it they did with two fabulous tours. The first tour was with Procter & Gamble. Again, the class was in sheer amazement as they heard the story of P & G, their mission, their vision, and their goals for the future. They were even more amazed when they actually got to see the plant in full operation. Their second tour was Camdel Metals – Handy Tube. I really hate being repetitive, but the word that comes to mind again is amazement – amazement with the product and the production. The class wrapped up their day at the Dover Federal Credit Union as they heard about the “business side of banking” from Vice President of Business Services, Lynne Schaefer. By the end of the day, the LCD Class had a real life grasp on just how Kent County grows! Chamber Connections, June 2012 9 10 Chamber Connections, June 2012 Cheryl Carney, Mayor of Magnolia, and Carleton Carey, Mayor of Dover congratulate Steve Artz, Honorary Mayor of Central Delaware (center). It’s Official! We Have Our First Honorary Mayor of Central Delaware Steve Artz of Orthodontics on Silver Lake raised the most votes during the Chamber’s 3-month fundraiser to secure his win as the area’s first Honorary Mayor of Central Delaware. Steve was declared the winner at the April Sunset Business Mixer amid lots of cheering from the spectators who had waited patiently for an hour to hear the results. Keeping the event fun and entertaining, the envelope containing the results of the election was secured in a briefcase which was handcuffed to the wrist of Tammy Ordway who was led in by a Dover police officer. Through lots of fanfare in which the envelope was finally handed over to Judy Diogo, CDCC President, who had no idea who the winner might be, the winner was announced as Steve Artz. Steve was then read a proclamation by Vic Schimp, CDCC Chairman, honoring him for his energy and hard work during the campaign. Vic then administered an Oath of Office in which Steve swore to uphold the duties of his office; to promote the general welfare, prosperity and quality of life in Central Delaware; and be present at ribbon-cuttings, festivals, and Chamber events. Many thanks to the Carneys of An Affair to Remember who ca- tered the Mixer and to the Fosketts who provided The Great Hall at St. Andrew’s Church for the event. They went above and beyond the expected to ensure that everyone had a great experience. From the decorations to the outstanding food, the evening was a tremendous success. Also, thanks to those who contributed door prizes: Sam’s Club, Our Game Table, ESS-Geiger, and Sayers Jewelers & Gemologists; and to the other candidates who did an outstanding job during the campaign. They are Tonda Parks of Delaware State News, Adrienne Hawes of WSFS Bank, Stephanie Turner of Faw Casson, and Caro- lyn Phinney of Signs by Tomorrow. They staged a mock debate, rode in a parade, decorated their vehicles, created Facebook pages and held a fundraising party to raise awareness of the Honorary Mayor program. Kudos to everyone who donated money to these individuals for the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce. You are to be commended for your tremendous support of this program. Mozert of Pfister Insurance, Inc. Hello, I’m Travis Mozert, a commercial agent with Pfister Insurance and, just like many of you, I wear many hats. I’m a husband, father and veteran of our Armed Forces. I have worked in the insurance industry for over 18 years, was a prior Delaware Insurance Commissioner appointed Arbitration Panel Member and am now proudly serving as an ambassador on behalf of The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce. Pfister Insurance agency is a locally owned independent agency operating in Kent County Delaware for over 70 years. Pfister Insurance enjoys doing business in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland and works with small businesses, nonprofits, families and individuals seeking the expertise of Pfister’s licensed agents who draw on over 175 years of combined insurance experience. Our business division offers unique insurance solutions and competitive rates for commercial property, general liability, professional liability, commercial automobile, workers compensation, commercial umbrellas, inland marine, excess liability surety and special event coverage. Pfister’s personal lines department provides both one-on-one agent contact with its customers and offers competitive insurance products for homes, cars, motorcycles, boats and recreational vehicles. When I was asked to offer my thoughts on The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce and what it’s meant to me a number of things raced through my mind. To me, my involvement has benefited from the chamber’s business resources, networking contacts, its support of small business right here in Kent County and in Legislative Hall. I also enjoy the opportunities it offers to give back to our community and, at times, just plain ‘ol good fun. In light of today’s dynamic business environment, I gravitate toward one key element and that is relationship building. I find this to be especially important as an insurance agent for it is the relationship and knowledge I gain from my client that helps me to better serve their needs. This key business philosophy guides our actions on a daily basis. It is a pleasure to be involved with an organization like The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce which heralds the same mantra. Thanks for reading my story. I invite you to meet me some time at one of the monthly Chamber business mixers and tell me yours. 14 Chamber Connections, June 2012 Member of the Month The Member of the Month for June 2012 is Paola Fernandez, your personal banker at WSFS Bank in Camden! She was chosen at the Sunset Business Mixer in April at the Great Hall at St. Andrew’s Church. You can also visit www. cdccc.net and click on the Member of the Month button to see Paola featured on the CDCC website! Here are her responses to the following questions… Q. When did you begin working for this business and what is your role? I started working for WSFS bank in August of 2007 and my current title is Personal Banker II. My primary responsibility is to build rapport and relationships with our customers. My job is to understand our customers’ needs and recommend products and services that will enhance their financial future. At WSFS, our associates are “universal”. Our associates are cross trained to conduct basic teller transactions and have the ability to open accounts. Our associates have been trained to truly service our customers in all areas. Also, being bilingual provides me more opportunities to help not only our English speaking customers, but our Spanish speaking community as well. Q. History of when the business began… Opening in 1832 WSFS Bank is the seventh oldest, continuouslyoperating bank in the United States. A permanent fixture in this community, The Bank is a service-oriented, locally-managed, community banking institution. The WSFS Bank mission is, “We Stand For Service® and strengthening our communities.” For many years, WSFS has been servicing businesses of all sizes, as well as growing families. WSFS has underwritten many homes in the Delaware Valley, advanced local businesses with a wide range of banking services and continues Name: Paola Fernandez, Title: Personal Banker II Name of your Business: WSFS Bank Camden Branch Address: 4566 S Dupont highway, Camden DE 19934 Hours: Monday-Thurs 9-6 pm Friday 9-7 pm, Saturday 9-3 PM Phone: 302-697-8891 Website: www.wsfsbank.com Email: Pfernandez@wsfsbank.com to implement innovative tactics to streamline personal and business banking Q. What products/services does your company offer? WSFS is committed to helping our customers build secure financial futures. To accomplish this, we provide competitive accounts, local loan decision-making and stellar quality customer service. WSFS Bank offers products for both personal and business needs such as checking, savings, Certificate of Deposits, Money Markets, Investments, IRA’s, Mortgages, Merchants Services, to name a few. From daily transactions to sophisticated credit solutions, we are here to help make our customers’ lives easier. We also offer convenient hours. Q. What do you see in the future for the business? The future for WSFS is very bright. I forsee us expanding our branches through-out the tri-state area while enhancing our brand and mission: We Stand For Service. We will continue our focus of strengthening local organizations and improving the communities we serve. Q. What, in your opinion, does the Chamber do for you and your business? The Chamber allows us to enhance our community involvement. Through the Chamber we are able to network with our local businesses while promoting our brand. The communities we serve are very important to us at WSFS so we are thankful that the Chamber allows us to attend ribbon cuttings and Chamber events. Q. What would you like to see the Chamber offer to its members? I would like to see the chamber offer Latino business owners more information in Spanish. In my experience, it is easier and more comfortable to join a program that is communicated in your first language as opposed to get involved in something that you do not fully understand. I have dealt with many Latino business owners within the past five years and I have realized that because of the lack of communication in Spanish, they have either never heard of the Chamber and/or are a bit intimidated because none of the information the Chamber offers is in Spanish. Q. Is there anything else the CDCC members should know about you or your business? At WSFS, we promise to exceed our customers expectations each time they interact with us by knowing our customers by name, quickly solving their problems, being knowledgeable and friendly, and understanding their individual needs. The 28.52 kW solar array installed at Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center is expected to produce over 32,0000 kW hours of electricity per year, which is enough to cover all the electricity Gambler’s Choice uses on an annual basis, making the business a net zero energy user. The array offsets over 52,000 pounds of carbon dioxide on an annual basis. Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center secured grants from the USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Program as well as the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Green Energy Program. The REAP Grants Program provides funds to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to purchase and install renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency improvements. The Green Energy Program provides grant incentives for qualifying renewable energy systems installed in Delaware. Over forty attendees joined in the SAVE THE DATE! JULY 25, 2012 MEMBER TO MEMBER EXPO ribbon cutting, which featured the Delaware State University’s Equestrian Team. Brittni Collins-Rideout and Assistant Coach Amanda Hotz opened the ceremony by singing the National Anthem while on horseback. The Team makes their home at Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center and Gambler’s Choice Owner John Melnick is the appointed President of the Delaware State University Equestrian Booster Club. Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center chose CNC Solar to install a clean energy source to power their stables for the next 30 years. The solar installation will allow Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center to reduce their carbon footprint, and will pay for itself in less than three years. Because the power produced from the system after it pays for itself will be free, the savings Gambler’s Choice Equestrian Center realizes from solar will benefit the business financially over the long term.
