Striped bass CATCH AND RELEASE By utilizing best catch and release practices, anglers can ensure greater chances of survival of released striped bass thus increasing angler contributions to conservation of this important recreational species. Suggestions to help boost survival rates do l Release the fish without taking it out of the water. l Handle fish with wet hands or gloves. l Cradle fish with one hand under the belly and one under the shoulder. l Resuscitate bass by pulling it forward or in a figure eight through the water by the lower lip. Never move it backwards. l Get the fish back in the water quickly! Try to limit air exposure to 15 seconds. l Use barbless hooks for quick release. l Use circle hooks when bait fishing. l Leave deep hooks in the fish by cutting the leader off close to the hook. Improper practices that may unintentionally injure striped bass intended for release l Lift bass by the mouth or tail. This can cause serious internal injury. l Handle bass with dry hands. l Drag fish across dry sand or excessively handle fish in a manner that removes their protective mucous coating. l Kick or step on fish. You will damage internal organs. l Touch the red gill rakers or gill area. They are the equivalent of your lungs. l Gaff a fish you intend to release. l Release a bass without first resuscitating it. BSC’s Fisheries Defense Fund All of the profits generated through this C&R tournament go towards the BSC’s Fisheries Defense Fund which is designed to fund efforts that focus on effective management of striped bass, help provide a clean and productive habitat, and to protect important forage fish in the goal of enhancing our recreational fisheries. This past year we have made significant donations to Stripers Forever, The Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland, the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, Save Barnegat Bay and Monmouth University’s “Stripers for the Future” research, a study funded 100% by the BSC to assess the physiology of air exposed striped bass and develop recommendations of maximum time out of water for released fish. All told, we have donated over $38,000 in the past 11 years to organizations dedicated to the preservation of striped bass.
