From the beginning, 161 East Bay St.
has provided staples and provisions
for the people of Charleston and its
visitors. The building was constructed in 1880 by Charleston architect
and builder Richard Southard to
house the growing F. W. Wagener &
Co. grocery store and its warehouse.
They sold everything from molasses,
seafood and liquors, to wooden-ware
coffee mills and groceries “fancy and
staple.” In the 1930s ownership of
the Wagener building passed to the
Ohlandt family wholesale grocery
company. Spared any damage in the
earthquake of 1886 and carefully rehabilitated in 1979 and 1996, much
of the building remains as it was
constructed: an enduring legacy.
