Travel with Healing Hands of Joy on an adventure to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro A Benefit Climb hosted by Duffle & Compass Joy Climb July 14th - 23rd, 2016 This adventurous fundraising climb will benefit the work of Healing Hands of Joy (HHOJ), a non-profit organization with programs in Ethiopia. The funds raised during the Joy Climb will go towards HHOJ’s work to make motherhood safer and end obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. This private climb will be escorted by Allison Shigo, Co-Producer of the Emmy Award-winning documentary, “A Walk to Beautiful,” and founder of Healing Hands of Joy. The climb on the Lemosho Route is planned to coincide with the full moon on the final ascent. It is approximately 42 miles from gate to gate and is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience. The climb will take 7 days with 6 nights of private camping on the mountain. A partial climb option of 3 days and 2 nights on the mountain with alternate activities for the other 5 days until everyone gathers at the end of the climb is suggested for those who are less physically fit and teens younger than 16 years of age. You will be so close to some of the best wildlife viewing in East Africa and observe a wide range of natural habitats as part of this exciting travel experience! Accommodations: 6 nights on Mt. Kilimanjaro in a private camp You will be climbing with an experienced crew of 45 for each group of 12 (2 guides, 5 assistant guides, 2 cooks and 36 porters) to maintain your safety and comfort in our private camp. You will be sleeping in high quality, 2-person sized tents and there will be a private chemical toilet in camp. There will be a tent with tables and chairs plus all required cooking utensils to provide hot meals in the morning and evening. The crew will also carry a hyperbaric decompression chamber and oxygen tank. RESERVATIONS: To confirm your participation requires a 50% non-refundable deposit. Brief Itinerary: July 14 Arrival in Tanzania with transfer to lodge for late supper and settle in for the evening. July 15 Guided hike in Arusha with pre-climb briefing and equipment check. July 16 Begin climb at Lemosho Route starting point to a camp for the night. July 17 Reach west side of Shira Plateau with picnic lunch. After lunch, reach edge of Plateau and camp with dramatic view of Kilimanjaro. July 18 Easy acclimatization hike with camp set higher on the Shira Plateau. Partial climbers will begin descent this morning and taken to a safari camp. July 19 Reach elevation over 4500m at Lava Tower then descend to Baranco Valley. Pass through alpine moorland zone to reach Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone. Partial climbers will get chance to see largest elephants in East Africa and enjoy activities such as game drives and walking safaris. July 20 Work our way to Barafu Camp and hike to Karanga Valley for lunch. Reach base camp at Barafu hut. At midnight, begin final ascent moving slowly to summit. Partical climbers will visit Arusha National Park to observe diverse natural habitats. July 21 Reach Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro and watch spectacular views in all directions. Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch. Downhill descent to edge of Mweka Forest. Partial climbers will tour Arusha and spend time at Cultural Heritage Center. July 22 Descent through the tropical forest after breakfast and group photos with arrival at Mweka gate. Celebratory dinner with entire group. July 23 Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport to check in for flights.
