Do you believe you have great pigeons?
But you did not achieve the expected results yet, because you are more a
breeder than a trainer? Maybe you should participate in a One Loft Race
then...One of the hardest one loft races, for really good pigeons, is the One
Loft Race in Tenerife, “Derby Internacional Arona-TENERIFE”, where
pigeons have to fly almost the whole route over the sea!

EL DERBY MÁS DURO DEL MUNDO
THE HARDEST RACE IN THE WORLD
Final Race Derby Arona
Sat 21st March, it was the start of the
week for pigeon fanciers arriving on the
Canarian island of Tenerife for the final
race of the Arona derby one loft race for
2014/15.
On the day of our arrival there was a
strong gusting westerly wind coming in
off the Atlantic and heavy showers
lingering over the island as preparations
got underway to welcome and host the
final event under the watchful eye of
pigeon fanciers from around the world.
Wednesday morning and with a slight
improvement in conditions the public
basketing commenced at the lofts from
9am, for the planned Friday morning
liberation , with so many fanciers
present with pigeons remaining in the
race they each in turn took their
opportunity of handling their entries
prior to being race marked for the race.
This was done openly and clearly visible
with the aid of the livestream in the
following order, on entry into the race
each identity ring was read and
confirmed prior to being covered, (this is
done to hide the true identity of the
pigeon and is not removed until the
pigeon returns) and wing stamped with a
unique Arona 2015 stamp is then
applied. It’s at this time the owner be it
breeder or activator has the opportunity
to come forward and examine their
pigeon, for condition before being placed
into the race pannier for shipment. This
procedure as you could imagine went on
for quite a while until some five hours
later the final pigeon went into the
basket, during the day was an ironic
moment when two pigeons arrived at the
lofts and after trapping and undergoing a
physical examination by the Arona team
these were also added to the basketing
list for participation into the final.
However on the down side for some
unlucky fanciers two pigeons were
withdrawn due to taking knocks resulting
in wing damage which restricted their
flying ability. This once again truly
indicated that the welfare of your entries
are paramount and no additional stress
is put onto the birds unnessesarily and
also clearly indicates the transparency of
the Arona derby one loft race, if your
pigeon is present and described as fit
and able to compete then the pigeons
are entered for competition. With all
pigeons marked, the crates were then
sealed and place under continuous guard
until such time as they were transported
to the race point and released.
Friday morning. And with the sun rising
over the island it was clearly visible that
the Arona team had once again studied
the forecast and had obviously gone with
the best day to ensure a liberation and
best racing conditions with clear blue
skies and a slight north easterly wind.
We received news that the pigeons were
in the air at 08.30, and after minutes of
orientation had soon
cleared the
liberation site in Fuerteventura and
ahead of them was the 275 klm of both
double land and seas crossings indicating
the final of the Tenerife olr was well and
truly underway, and someone would
soon be the proud recipient of the
ultimate prize of 50,000 euro.
In the meantime at the lofts, fanciers
were gradually arriving to be greeted by
José Ledesma race organiser and the
Arona team. Year in, year out the race
organisers have thrived to give this
event the best coverage for the final race
as possible for fanciers and interested
parties worldwide, and this year they
have moved one step closer to achieving
their goal, with a fully equipped camera
crew and live tv broadcast linking to both
the big screen for those present to
witness the events and also for live
coverage for live Spanish tv and
Livestream facilities for parties further
afield.
With the free bus arriving at the loft a
little
later
than
anticipated,
complemented with many fanciers from
various hotels, the adjacent area and
marquee soon began to fill up and whilst
many took cover from the increasing
heat, many sustained this to discuss and
talk pigeon matters and ideas with
fanciers from different backgrounds and
nationalities whilst of course indulging in
the complimentary refreshments off food
and drink once again laid on for the
duration of the day.
With the usual guess the time of the first
pigeon
circulating
around
the
congregation, a big roar went up as a
sighting of a single pigeon circled
overhead and whilst thoughts were that
once a again a lost pigeon had decided
to come home, undoubtedly there was a
moment of anticipation as all eyes
eagerly waited for this arrival to
eventually trap and for news on the
digital screen to see if this was to be the
case, minutes later this was confirmed,
and everyone settled down once again
for the wait.
With everyone sky watching, it was at
11.18 and after 2hrs 48 min on the wing
the first pigeons were spotted arriving at
the loft and after a few short spins above
us, they swiftly dropped out of sight onto
the landing board. Everyone watched the
pigeons tapping on the big screen, there
was a huge applause a few moments
later as the winning pigeon from these
first arrivals was confirmed as the
Belgium entry by present fancier Roger
Mertens and syndicate Leylan-Paloma
Belgie and pigeon named Paloma Terres,
recording an arrival time of 11.18.03.70
the winning pigeon a blue cock has had
memorial
after
completing
the
programme in the recent Belgium
Masters in 2014 and finishing 90th place
in the final race. The owners decided to
purchase this gallant pigeon back and
re-enter it in the Arona Tenerife one loft
race and from there goes onto win the
honour of 1st prize and 50,000 euros.
In 2nd place it was the team Netherlands
entry by team R van oss and Zn with
their pigeon Zazoo which timed in at
11.18.08.35 to recieve 25,000 euro.
Unfortunately, there’s no team photo of
this winning fancier to give them their
true credit on their performance. Closely
followed in 3rd place, was the Slovakian
entry by team Holecl & Hylupok and
pigeon Miska which claims the third
place prize money of 20,000 euro on
11.18.09.50. 4th were the team Czech
republic entry Tokio for team Lubomir
Kubacek prize money of 15,000 euro on
11.18.10.25. 5th were team Germany
and the entry of pigeon Bambi by Paul Heinz
Westjohan
timing
in
at
11.18.60.30 and prize money of 10,000
euro. 6th and it was the second arrival
for team Netherlands and team Lorenzo
van Russell with pigeon stiring up
Demons recording 11.18.18.25. 7th were
the Gran Canarian entry by team Felix
Santiago-Aday Rguez with pigeon Wise
Lady 11.18.19.10. 8th position saw a
second pigeon for team R van Oss and
Zn with Maputo timing in at 11.18.22.35.
9th was yet another Netherlands pigeon
that of team Dickman-Streoges and their
entry Kenia recording 11.18.23.70 and
as in past weeks rounding off the top ten
are team Stela Rossa for team Italia with
their pigeon Cana on 11.18.27.75.
As for team UK/Ireland the position of
13th international were the Irish team of
Dylan and Danial Boylan with their entry
Philo 1 timing in at 11.18.34.25, so as
you can see it was a close event to finish
off another year's competition, but what
was most pleasing was the pigeons
continued to arrive at their numbers
throughout the remainder of the morning
and early afternoon, and with so many
people present it was a great experience
for everyone to witness.
So what about the other battle that was
quietly going on for ace pigeon in the
series, as previously described it did
eventually come down to the wire with
the eventual winner being declared as
pigeon Brown Sugar entered by team
Eeuu for Alberto Sánchez finishing off in
24th place in this final race accumulating
78168 points. 2nd ace pigeon goes to
the UK/Ireland team Yellowbelly and
pigeon Josey 61st place and 77619 and
3rd ace pigeon being team top ten and
pigeon Leonardo recording 76246 points
and finishing in 15th place.
There
was
one
more
noticeable
excitement and that was at the time
when Jock Ross at the age of 75yrs
pigeon Don King showed up on the score
board in 122 place. Jock has been a
competitor in the Arona one loft race for
many years and this year was his first
time in having a pigeon that has timed in
the final, so well done to him.
On catching up with Jose before leaving
he indicated to me that this final is up
there amongst the best races that the
Arona Tenerife one loft race has
experienced in its past ten years, and
hopeful they have now discovered the
right training and racing formula for
years to come.
So from there we move onto the gala
evening when all those successful
hotspot and final race winners were
formally congratulated. This was held at
the Mare Nostrum Resort hotel in the
heart of the resort of Playa de las
Americas on sat 28th, with the
traditional buffet style refreshments and
entertainment throughout the evening.
Obviously the main part of the evening
was to formally award the big winners of
the final race with the prize money
cheques to the proud winners.
So there it is all the races have been
flown and the winners aknowledged, its
now time to reflect on the past months
work from the initial intake of 2,100
pigeons entered for competition. 209
have
now
overcome
the
ulimate
challenge of the Tenerife one loft race
described as the hardest race in the
world, all the obstacles thats have been
put in front of them including sea
training, perigrine attacks and island to
island training and hotspot races, they
have now exceeded through to the final,
and from the 209 pigeons entered 196
gallant pigeons have returned giving a
returns average of 93% safley housed
within the lofts. These we hear will soon
be coming up for auction with the
leading 33 pigeons plus the 33 leading
ace pigeons (50 Total) being auctioned
from May 11th on the well known Pipa
site www.pipa.be, followed by the
remaining pigeons being auctioned on
the
Arona
auction
page
on
at
www.todopalomas.com website shortly
afterwards.
So on finishing I would like to on behalf
of the many fanciers and syndicates who
follow and support the event annually
thank the Arona team for all their hard
work in providing an exciting finish to
this years series and for their warm
welcome and hospitality shown to
everyone throughout the year and
especially during the week leading up to
the final race.
On a personal note, I too would like to
thank
the
Arona
team
for
the
opportunity and invitation to cover the
Arona one loft race from start to finish in
the fancy press and on various pigeon
websites on their behalf, and of course
all the encouraging comments that I
have received from all corners of the
world in providing such articles after
each event and the opportunity to meet
up and become friends with so many
fanciers throughout the week of the final
race.
The successful 2015 Arona team,
welcome participants old and new to the
Tenerife one loft race in 2015/16.
So whats next! Of course as one door
closes another opens as the doors will be
open soon for the next chapter of the
Arona Tenerife one loft race and
following on from this years performance
everyone is hopeful that the Arona good
fortune will continue for year to come.

´Stiring up Demons´
haalt 5000,- euro op voor Lorenzo van Russel,
de laatste vier vluchten steeds top 90. Rini
Ten slotte
de ´Blocker´ van Mekes-Van Boxmeer drukt
als 12. af, goed voor 900,- euro. Deze won
vooraf al 1. - 2. - 3. en 8. bij de races over
zee, bijzonder.
keer 100km over open zee. Om 11.18 uur
gingen de eersten over de finish aan 1554
mpm en 30 minuten later waren al 175
duiven over de finish gelopen, een prachtig
resultaat.
gemaakt.
