Historical Review
ü
The need for this program was originally identified in1998, in meetings
with the President, the Secretary of Commerce, and leading CEO’s. It
was recognized that US curriculum did not include aspects of
international trade. This resulted in a Dept. of Commerce initiating the
Virtual Trade Mission.
ü
In Oakland County, this was modified to match local needs as educators
and business partners worked with government officials to design and
deliver the GTM model, a simulated trade mission for students.
ü
Initially sponsored by Automation Alley, hosted by Oakland
Community College, and managed by Oakland Schools, the project has
a regional impact. Support from the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation, the Governor’s office, and the Department of Commerce
has allowed for local and global business support.
