That is a total of 2,400 hours spent learning and having fun. • 40 kids participated in a fashion show that lifted their self-esteem and gave them an excellent excuse to dress up and walk the cat walk. For many, this was a first. • 50 children created unique works of art in the summer art program. For some of our children this was a firsttime learning experience with art. Now, these same children are preparing for a new school year. This means we need at least 168 backpacks, 100 sets of school uniforms and too many folders, pencils and pieces of paper to count. For us, those numbers can climb quickly, as we see new kids Continued on page 3 Volunteer Recognition David Hock Receives Gold Leaf Award In early June, the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana hosted the twelfth annual Gold Leaf Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This year, fifty-one volunteers from 49 organizations were honored for their volunteer service to the community. The annual event seeks to recognize volunteers while raising public awareness about the area’s service organizations. The Gold Leaf award is named for the precious metal because of its intrinsic, prized value that mirrors that of the volunteers, said S. Butch Shaw, chair of the foundation’s board of directors. Home of the Innocents was extremely proud to have one of its volunteers, David Hock, awarded a Gold Leaf pin during this year’s Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Northside Christian Church in New Albany. A member of the Home’s Southern Indiana Advisory Board, David also chairs the Cardinal Ritter Birthplace Foundation Board. The Home Deploys Bernoulli® Home of the Innocents and Cardiopulmonary Corp., have announced the implementation of Bernoulli® for patient safety surveillance for the Home’s mobile children with special needs residing in the newly opened Rainforest Trail cottage in the Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center (KCPCC). The surveillance includes the exact location of a medically fragile, but mobile, child anywhere within the facility. The Home’s KCPCC maintains a hospital-like and home-awayfrom-home environment for children who are dependent on technology to sustain life. In an effort to provide normal activities for the mostly ventilator dependent children, they are taken from the unit in wheelchairs to other campus locations for therapy, activities like swimming or art, meals, and school. In the event of a medical crisis, the responsible clinician needs to know what is wrong, and where to go. Bernoulli delivers alarm and location information in real time to the clinician’s wireless communication device, enhancing patient safety. When the new state of the art wing was being planned, creating a safer environment dominated discussions. Even with serious medical issues, the children can still be very active. An accidental disconnection from their ventilator will compromise a patient’s respiratory function. “We desired a wireless system that could communicate comprehensive alarm and patient information, including their location”, said respiratory therapy manager Milton Schmidt. Milton went on Milton Schmidt, Respitory Therapy Manager, joins Halley Coin, a resident in to say, “We chose Bernoulli because the KCPCC, on a visit to view the Home’s it incorporated location tracking new underwater themed mural in the Kay & Jim Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center. with the surveillance monitoring. This means earlier intervention and improved outcomes as help arrives at the patient’s side prepared for the situation”. Halley’s wheelchair is equipped with a Bernoulli portable patient transmittor that allows her vital stats to be monitored in the nursing station back in her cottage. The KCPCC provides longterm care and respite services for medically fragile children, under age 21 years, who qualify for skilled nursing home care. The Home is currently receiving referrals from hospitals and other organizations in the community. For more information or to make a referral, please contact the Medical Social Services Coordinator at the KCPCC at 502.596.1127. For 2011, or until funds run out, Kentucky taxpayers may receive an income tax credit for amounts given to permanent endowment funds at qualified community foundations. More specifically, the donor receives 20% credit of the amount given, with a maximum of $10,000. Unlike a tax deduction, a credit is taken off the tax bill dollar for dollar. So, if a donor has a Kentucky tax bill of $1,000, a donation of $5,000 through Endow Kentucky would eliminate that tax altogether (20% of $5,000 is $1,000). The Community Foundation of Louisville, among other Kentucky community foundations, is qualified to accept gifts. All gifts must be approved before making the gift. Applications for the tax credits are available at the following website: http:// revenue.ky.gov/endowedkytaxcredit.htm. Overview of Application Process: 1. Before making a gift, the donor must file an application with the KY Department of Revenue for preliminary approval of the intended charitable gift. If approved, the Continued on page 6 Wish List, cont. Baby Items cont. Department will issue a preliminary approval letter. 2. Within 30 days of receiving the approval letter, the donor must make the contribution to the endowment fund at a Community Foundation. 3. Within 10 days of making the gift, the donor must send proof of the gift to the Department, which will review the provided proof and issue a letter of final approval. To see if this gift is right for you, call the Louisville Community Foundation at 502.585.4649 or the community foundation in your area. Home Chosen for Humana Volunteer Fellowship Home of the Innocents is pleased to announce that it has been selected by The Humana Foundation for the inaugural Humana Volunteer Fellowship program. This program will bring five Humana associates to work full-time on a dedicated project at the Home. The Home will also receive a $5,000 - 10,000 grant from the Foundation at the end of the engagement to continue the great work of the fellows. The Board and Staff at the Home are thrilled to partner with The Humana Foundation and Humana associates in this endeavor and look forward to growing the relationship. 6 thanks INDIVIDUALS continued Ms. Rosalie Rosenthal Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. This generous grant will provide much needed resources for the Parents Acquiring Skills and Strengths (PASS) Program, which is now in its sixth year. We are very excited to report that our wonderful friends at the WHAS Crusade for Children have shown their support for our kids by awarding us a grant of $381,537. This money will go towards equipment for our new Hockensmith Pediatric Assessment Center & the expanded Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center such as beds, cribs, bathing units, & equipment for our therapy areas, clinic and pharmacy. Thank you to the Crusade, and thank you to all of you who support the Crusade each year! We are thrilled to announce that Louisville Metro Government has renewed its financial support of Project Keepsafe with a grant of $38,500 from the Family Services Fund. This amount of funding will provide 308 days of care for children at the Home while their single parent voluntarily receives in-patient treatment for either substance abuse, mental illness, or a physical health problem. This innovative and highly successful program is now in its tenth year. Please join us in sending out a HUGE thank you to the Louisville Metro Government for helping us fund this wonderful project! 7 FALL 2011 Non-Profit Org.
