De La Soul returns with 20 brand new tracks on
“Impossible Mission”. Narrated by De La
themselves, Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo explain
what “Buhloone Mindstate” they were in when they
recorded each track. De La Soul’s debut album, “3
Feet High and Rising” (1989), was an instant
smash that saw the group labeled as “hippies” due
to the message of peace and love. They quickly
became prominent members of the Zulu Nation,
along with A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep,
Queen Latifah, The Jungle Brothers and others.
They were also members of the famed Native
Tongues Posse and mentioned the group often in
their music. “Me, Myself and I” became a huge hit,
further cementing the group’s popularity. De La’s
follow-up albums, “De La Soul Is Dead” (1991),
“Buhloone Mindstate” (1993), “Stakes Is High”
(1996), “AOI: Mosaic Thump” (2000), “AOI: Bionix”
(2001), and “The Grind Date” (2004) were all
critically-acclaimed releases.
In 2006 we get yet another installment of the De La
genius with their new release, “Impossible Mission”.
Standout cuts on “Impossible Mission” include “Live
@ The Dugout ’87,” “Voodoo Circus,” “Friends,”
and the ultra funky “You Got It.”
A bonus treat includes a live performance in Tokyo,
Japan. Ever since their last album, “The Grind Date”,
was released, fans have been waiting for more from
the trio from Amityville, Long Island. With production
from the likes of Oh No (Murs, LMNO), Geology (Mos
Def, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, Bahamadia), Supa Dave
West (Phife Dawg, Reflection Eternal, Me’Shell
NdegéOcello), and De La Soul themselves, this album
should definitely wet their appetites.

IV Thieves
If We Can’t Escape My Pretty
TRACK LISTING:

The IV Thieves evolved from the band
Nic Armstrong And The Thieves. While
recording the follow up to their critically
acclaimed debut CD, The Greatest White
Liar, all band members took a hand at
songwriting and lead vocal duties. That
evolution led the band to decide they
needed a name change, hence the IV
Thieves. After touring with Oasis, The
Pretenders, Jet, The Bravery, Mercury
Rev, Louis XIV and more, the band won
over music fans and the hard to impress
music press. Rolling Stone hailed them
as the band to watch and included them
on their Hot List.
“They’ll be one of the biggest bands. They’re
pretty special men” – Noel Gallagher, Oasis
“Knife-blade-treble guitars and the
vengeful crash of early Who and Kinks”
- Rolling Stone
“These four lads from Nottingham prove that
British rock is alive and kicking..like
watching Oasis combined with Supergrass”

Since the early 90’s, Kitaro’s music has
evolved further with an astonishing run of 26
albums for longtime home Domo Records,
garnering both critical and commercial
success. The best moments of that tenure
are contained herin with tracks that reveal the
depth of a singular and lasting artistry and
stand as a testament to Kitaro’s enduring
imagination.
The sheer breadth of Kitaro’s eclecticism is
on full display here, with selections from his
essential soundtrack work collected on The
Best of Silk Road and 2002’s The Soong
Sisters, to his Broadway score for Cirque
Ingenieux, as well as more personal creations
such as the two-volume Sacred Journey of
Kukai, a surprising melting pot of prog-rock
guitar, haunting woodwinds, snippets of
nature sounds and even Buddhist monk
chanting.
Though his studio output is indispensable, it’s
the live realm where Kitaro really shines.
Thus, the DVD that complements this CD
collection contains stunning footage of two very
different but equally epic performances: a 1999
concert in Spain and a 2004 show in China,
both demonstrating that Kitaro’s music truly
crosses borders to deliver a universal message.

Moka Only is the master of reinvention. With
more wardrobe changes than Madonna, and
a more prolific output than humping rabbits,
this is the return of the Man of the Hour.
This follow-up to ‘Desired Effect’ comes out of
left field like Lance Bass at a baseball game.
Making a clean break from his tenure with
Swollen Members, the real talent behind the
group shows us his skills behind the boards,
as well as his mastering of layered harmonies
and classic-era Moka verses.
A work of incredible intricacy, Station Agent
is the soundscape for a kid watching the
trains coming and going, waiting for his turn to
run the big machines. Featuring live and
sampled instruments, with all production done
by Moka Only, this is a look at the artist
behind the hit maker. This is Moka at his best.
Rebounding with new fire, this is grown man
music that brings you back to the best days of
your young life. Recalling a young Coltrane,
Moka is a true musician, pushing hip-hop into
where it thrives…in the unexpected.
For fans of J-Dilla Madlib and Frank Zappa, this
record is going to be eagerly anticipated, like
rumours of a Jessica Alba sex tape. Enjoy.

Growing Pains
As Peanuts & Corn Records resident
brokenknuckle bard, John Smith crafts
songs that detail the lives of his
community, Winnipeg's infamous North
End. Stylistically, he eases through a
myriad of flows with a delivery that
ranges from quietly conversational to
loud, damning testimonial. Growing
Pains is his third solo LP, and continues
his rich storytelling developed on “Pinky’s
Laundromat” but also steps up the
Bravado and self-confidence with lighter,

Biz Markie’s inclination toward juvenile humor and
his fondness for goofy, tuneless, half-sung
choruses camouflaged his true talents as a
freestyle rhymer. The Biz may not have been able
to translate his wild rhyming talents to tape, but
what he did record was worthwhile in its own way.
With his silly humor and inventive, sample-laden
productions, he proved that hip-hop could be funny
and melodic, without sacrificing its street credibility.
A native of New York, Biz (born Marcel Hall) first
came to prominence in the early ‘80s, when he
began rapping at Manhattan nightclubs like the
Funhouse and the Roxy and following the
legendary Juice Crew all over the country. Biz met
producer Marley Marl in 1985, and began working
as a human beatbox for Marl-connected acts MC
Shan and, later, Roxanne Shanté. He also
recorded his first set of demos, and by 1988, had
signed with Cold Chillin’.
This album was original released as a single vinyl
EP only. It is not until now that these songs have
been collected in their entirety and available for the
first time ever as a complete CD. In addition Traffic
Entertainment Group and Cold Chillin’ have
resurrected four live songs previously never ever
heard anywhere except for that original performance
from Worchester MA, 1987.
This beautifully packaged CD contains extended
artwork (complete with fold out poster) that features
never before viewed original photography from the
achieves of George Du Bose, acclaimed pop-art
photographer and designer. Du Bose also lends
extensive commentary to the liner notes that feature
quotes and stories straight out the mouths of Hip Hop

It’s almost impossible to overstate the
impact and importance of Fela Kuti to the
global musical village.
Throughout a career that began with the
London jazz scene and the uptown
Nigerian music highlife in the 1950’s,
Fela Kuti peaked with the devoutly
oppositional Afrobeat in the 1970’s, and
inspired countless artists ever since he
lived out the warcry “music is the
weapon” like no other musician. It’s no
exaggeration to say that Fela is to
African Music what Marley is to Reggae.

FELA KUTI
"Monkey Banana...." reflects
a time during which Fela's
music was moving even more
into long extended grooves.
Both "Monkey Banana" and
"Sense Wiseness," have his
characteristic blends of
improvisational-sounding
trades between various
instruments and lead and
chanting backup vocals,
along with his minor-based
melodies. Excuse O is one of
the better cuts from his mid1970s discography, with
remarkably spooky, effective
organ, a slow ominous
groove, and a blunt critique of
Africa's educational system.
Everything Scatter tenminute title track posits
Kuti and his followers
versus the status quo. The
15-minute "Who No Know
Go Know" strikes a more
relaxed groove in its call
for African unity. "Noise
for Vendor Mouth" puts
some more emphasis on
the choppy, lean, funk-ish
guitars than some other
Kuti cuts. "Mattress" goes
a little further afield in its
controversial subject
matter, here reflecting his
polygamous lifestyle.

An unusual item in Fela's
discography - "Upside
Down" is sung by Sandra
Akanke Isidore. - the
woman Fela met during his
stay in the United States at
the end of the 1960s, and
who is credited with helping
to elevate his own social
awareness and ethnic
identity. It makes for
something refreshingly
different. "Music of many..."
is utter genius, musical
history and at first glance
completely unlikely: a
collaboration with vibist and
innovator, Roy Ayers.

Few are the pioneering musicians who have
managed to invent a whole new style or
musical language, but how many have ever
invented a new bona-fide verbal language?
Composer, singer, writer, poet and spiritualist
Julien Jacob has done exactly that: his own
imaginary language, inspired by the timbre
and vibration of words, is intended to release
the listener and allow him to interpret the
song in his own way.
Hailing from Benin (West Africa), but now
living in France, he inhabits, along with his
label mate and collaborator Rachid Taha, the
creative hinterland between cultures.
Al Jarreau and then moved to Paris to develop
his music. In the mid 1990’s he finally settled in
Brittany where he wrote a series of books and a
huge trove of songs.
After discovering rock and jazz in his youth,
Jacob pursued growing interests in literature,
poetry and spirituality. He hung out with
musical heroes like Fela Kuti, Miles Davis and
Cotonou is palpably African but also distinctly
unlike any African music you’ve ever heard, full
of original pan-continental nuances, twists and
off-beat musings of a very rich imagination.

WOODPIGEON: Group whistling,
tambourine, handclapping, fey longing,
winged eyeliner, and corduroy blazers
conspired to create music that was as
glittery and piquantly morose as fresh
snow on sidewalks under a full moon.
WOODPIGEON are a collective of
Calgarians, seven officially, and max out
at 14 with guests- playing Mark
Hamiltons episodic orchestral pop
concoctions.
“Woodpigeon is cardigan handclap pop at its
finest, lovingly crafted by Mark Hamilton and
executed by his perma-expanding and
contracting orchestra of musical allies.
Hamilton has a sweet choirboy voice that
could meet Stuart Murdochs after school by
the bike racks for a twee-fest bitch

-SEE MAGAZINE, EDMONTON
“Woodpigeon is a welcome breath of fresh air
with a stage-cramming line-up and a diverse
arsenal of musical equipment… Whether the
songs are stripped down to bare essentials, or

harmonica, they are equally stunning… With
their music, Woodpigeon makes the biggest of
movements with the smallest of gestures.”

Calgary’s best kept rock n roll secret is about to
break wide open.
A killer new album produced by JOEY MOI
(Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman, Default) and
BRIAN HOWES (Hinder, Hedley, Faber) will get the
national exposure it deserves through Bhurr
Records. Aided by the notoriety gained as a result
of drummer Harvey Warren’s performance with
MOTLEY CRUE (he replaced Tommy Lee for a
date in Red Deer – Tommy played cheerleader!),
ONE-900 is on final countdown to blast off!
Outstanding New Rock tracks “Make Up X”,
“Standing Still” and “Way Past Sorry” will definitely
make an impact at Radio and show why ONE-900
have been CJAY 92 National Songwriting Contest
Winner, a CMW Independent Music Award Finalist,
and standout showcase Artist at NMW, CMW and
NxNE. It also provides insight into why MOI and
HOWE agreed to work with the band.
But the music is only half the story. An inspired live
show anchored by the stick-twirling Mr. Warren,
which also features frontman Jacen (JD) Ekstrom
(vocals / guitar), Mike Sweeney (lead guitar /
vocals) and R.J. Killinger (bass / vocals) will make
fans and critics alike wonder how they did not
discover this band sooner! Fans that have seen the
band support Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman,
Three Days Grace, Damage Plan and Danko Jone,
know that ONE-900 knows how to bring the ROCK!
O9H was released independently in April 2006 and
the initial pressing has since sold out to fans in Alberta
and around the world. A recent promotional trip to
Toronto included performances at the Molson
Amphitheatre on the Molson Canadian Rockstar
Stage and the Bovine Sex Club. All agree that ONE900 was equally impressive at both shows.

An icon for the west coast of

"Insensatez", "Se Todos

Composer, singer, poet

towering legend of
Brazilian music, possibly
even the greatest Brazilian
musician of the 20th

a contemporary of
tropicalia artists like

instead he aligned himself

“Agua De Beber”,
“Desafinado”,
“Insensataz”, “Corcovado”
