2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships
Welcome to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 2015 Message from the Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Small Business Welcome to the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships – a milestone year with the event returning to the Gold Coast to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The ‘Aussies’ has seen strong growth in Queensland, and is now known as the largest competition of its kind in the world. I welcome all athletes and supporters who have travelled to Queensland for the 2015 Aussies. The Palaszczuk Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland, is proud to support this event as part of Queensland’s It’s Live! events calendar. I congratulate Surf Life Saving Australia, officials and volunteers for ensuring this event is a great success and wish all competitors the best of luck. The Hon. Kate Jones, MP Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Small Business A message from the Mayor of City of Gold Coast Surf Life Saving is inexorably linked to Australia’s history and will forever be at the heart of its culture. Its values of mateship, camaraderie and community service have stood the test of time and deserve praise and celebration. The Gold Coast, with its deep connection to the beach and outdoor lifestyle, is proud to once again host the annual Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships and lend its ongoing support to the future of the movement. As Mayor, I am grateful to Surf Life Saving for its service to the community and the positive influence it has on the lives on thousands of young locals. These Championships may test the mettle of our most elite but will surely inspire and motivate us all. I extend a warm and sincere welcome to the 7000 surf life savers representing more than 300 clubs over nine days of competition at our world famous North Kirra Beach. While there will always be a winning team or individual, I applaud every competitor, official and the valued sponsors for ensuring this carnival is a success. Away from the competition, I encourage all to take time out to explore the majestic southern end of our coast and all it has to offer. Tom Tate Mayor, City of Gold Coast 2 ssm A message from the President of Surf Life Saving Australia Welcome to the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. The 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at North Kirra represents a milestone for the Surf Life Saving movement. We celebrate 100 years since the first championships were held at Bondi on 20th March 1915. The championships at Bondi comprised two championship events, the Surf Swim and team event Rescue and Resuscitation [R&R] where an actual rescue is simulated. For many years the R&R was the most prestigious event at a surf carnival and the tradition of the R&R continues in the Championships today. In the lead up to the 1915 Championships there were 28 Clubs and an active membership of 2,683 in the association. 100 years on we have 311 Clubs and 168,000 members. The impact of female membership and nippers has been profound on the movement. This has ensured the success and sustainability of our amazing organisation. We expect some 6,500 competitors to participate across all age categories and disciplines. For the first time we have a Youth Championships to be conducted on the weekend prior to the Senior Championships and also we are launching the first Aussie Ocean Swim, a 2.5Km open water swim between Tweed Heads/ Coolangatta and North Kirra on Sunday 12th April 2015 for members and community participants. The purpose of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships is to bring our National movement and community together, in a safe and spirited celebration of the best of our Life Saving tradition, culture and sport. I wish all competitors the best of luck in competition and particularly thank the many volunteers, water safety and the team at Surf Life Saving Australia for their huge contribution to celebrate this years Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. Graham Ford President, Surf Life Saving Australia A message from the President of Surf Life Saving Queensland 100 Aussies! What a record of achievement for Surf Life Saving. To think that in 1915, just before the Gallipoli landings, when the starter's gun (did he have a gun?) first sounded, there were just over 2,000 lifesavers in Australia; today we have 165,000 members in 311 Surf Clubs across our great country. May I offer a warm Queensland and Gold Coast welcome to our Athletes, our Officials and their families, friends and supporters. Surf Sports competition at Aussies helps our active Lifesavers to be "Rescue Ready" for every emergency. This is our mission - to prevent drowning on our Beaches and adjacent waterways. Surf Sports competition has for 100 years been an important part of our Traditions, promoting a healthy lifestyle and celebrating the wonderful athletic abilities of our volunteers, aged from 14 to 84. This year we see the inauguration of our Youth Championships in the first two days of our Championships. It is a bold new initiative by SLSA and Queensland is very pleased to be hosting the very first Australian Youth Championships, just as Bondi Beach hosted the very first Aussies Championships, 100 years ago. A happy, safe and successful competition to all. Ralph Devlin QC President, Surf Life Saving Queensland Deputy President, Surf Life Saving Australia 11-19 APRIL 2015 Gold Coast, Queensland Did you know? That the Club Cap Colour Guide was first published in the 1998 Aussies program and every year since. The order of the caps is based on colour and the Herbert Voigt Club Cap Recognition Scheme. 4 ssm 11-19 APRIL 2015 Gold Coast, Queensland The guide is a great way of helping people recognise athletes clubs when they are out in the surf, as well as highlighting just how confusing it is to identify a club as so many clubs share the same cap colours. sls.com.au/aussies ssm 5 6 ssm 11-19 APRIL 2015 Gold Coast, Queensland sls.com.au/aussies ssm 7 Surf Life Saving Club Cap Colour Guide 8 ssm Port Elliott (SA) Bonbeach (VIC) Chelsea Longbeach (VIC) Corrimal (NSW) Lorne (VIC) Newcastle (NSW) Sawtell (NSW) North Kirra (QLD) Mindil Beach (NT) Pacific (QLD) Burning Palms (NSW) North Haven (SA) Salt (NSW) North Cottesloe (WA) North Narrabeen (NSW) Mallacoota (VIC) Hervey Bay (QLD) Yeppoon (QLD) Somerton (SA) Anglesea (VIC) Macksville Scotts Head (NSW) North Bondi (NSW) Noosa Heads (QLD) Emu Park (QLD) Soldiers Beach (NSW) South Maroubra (NSW) Thirroul (NSW) Nobbys Beach (QLD) North Wollongong (NSW) Somerset (TAS) Bundaberg (QLD) Catherine Hill Bay (NSW) Semaphore (SA) Woolgoolga (NSW) The Lakes (NSW) North Burleigh (QLD) Tamarama (NSW) The Entrance (NSW) Brunswick (NSW) City of Bunbury (WA) Woonona (NSW) Carlton Park (TAS) City of Perth (WA) Port Campbell (VIC) Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore (NSW) Port Macquarie (NSW) Avalon Beach (NSW) Mackay (QLD) Geraldton (WA) Merewether (NSW) South Port (SA) Goolwa (SA) Crowdy Head (NSW) Secret Harbour (WA) Maroochydore (QLD) Seaspray (VIC) Austinmer (NSW) Long Reef (NSW) Coolangatta (QLD) Northcliffe (QLD) Cudgen Headland (NSW) Barwon Heads Thirteenth Beach (VIC) Normanville (SA) 11-19 APRIL 2015 Gold Coast, Queensland 2015 Australian Youth Surf Life Saving Championships Timetable of Events Please note that this timetable is to be used as a guide only, and subject to change. Symbolically, The Aussies 2015 were welcomed back to Queensland 100 years to the day since the first ever Championships carnival was held at Bondi Beach on March 20, 1915. Modern day stars Shannon Eckstein, Liz Pluimers and Naomi Flood were joined by former junior Ironman champion Thomas FraserHolmes to launch The Aussies 2015. Fraser-Holmes has more recently used his surf lifesaving background to become one of the world’s best swimmers, winning 200m freestyle gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. In a nod to the rich history of The Aussies, the highly successful quartet was joined by the Bondi Surf Life Saving Club girls Rescue and Resuscitation team. It was one of the two inaugural events on the program in 1915 – and was won by Bondi SLSC. One of the oldest living competitors at The Aussies, 87-year-old Coffs Harbour and Freshwater SLSC legend John Mills OAM was also in attendance. Mr Mills is a 4-time Australian R and R premiership winner who competed in his first Aussies event in 1947. He went on to win medals throughout the 1950’s. The Aussies 2015 are again supported by major partner Tourism and Events Queensland. Queensland Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Kate Jones MP, welcomed the event back to the Gold Coast for its centenary celebrations. 14 ssm For the first time, The Aussies will include a Youth Championship and the inaugural Aussie Ocean Swim. It will also be the first time that the four days of the finals action will be live streamed on the official SLSA website.
