A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Dear members,
We are now a few weeks into the year and I think that there is only one
thing everybody wants out of 2013 - better weather! - and I do hope
we get some. Good weather would be good for the Area too as we
have a number of events lined up for the coming year: all are listed in
this issue of Sideways and on the Area website.
Our big event this year will be the Scottish Side Saddle Show to be
held on Saturday 28th September at the Scottish National Equestrian
Centre (SNEC). On this occasion, the Area will need support from all
members, whether as mounted participants or as stewards and helpers on foot. More
information will be available very soon.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our first show of the year: the SSA Area 9 Spring

Fiona.

NEWS AND EVENTS
THE SCOTTISH SIDE SADDLE SHOW
The first edition of the Scottish Side Saddle Show will take place on Saturday 28 th
September 2013 at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre in Oatridge, West Lothian.
With around 15 classes to choose from, there will be something for everyone! We are
looking for stewards to help out on the day so if you can spare sometime on the day,
please come and help us run this event.
THE SSA'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY
On 4th February 2014, the Side Saddle Association will be celebrating its 40th anniversary
by holding an event at Aintree Racecourse. The Side Saddle Association would like all
Areas to be represented during a big ride out on the premises. If you would like to fly the
flag for Area 9, could you please send me a note of interest by Monday 22nd April 2013?
Thanks!
RACING LADIES
The Dianas of the Chase 2013 edition took place in February and was believed to be the
first side saddle steeplechase since 1927. Area 9 was represented and our very own Ann
C Stark finished third! She did it again a a month later, and this time she was the only side
saddle rider in the race. The Friar Haugh race in Kelso was 2.6 miles and 24 fences long
and Ann and Charlie took it in their stride and completed the race with a big grin on their
faces! Well done you two!

OUR MEMBERS
SAMANTHA WILSON, COMMITTEE MEMBER
I had always wanted to try side saddle since I was very young but
never got the chance. For my birthday in 2011 Mum and Dad paid
for me to get a couple of side saddle lessons. I was hooked from
the first one, and the search started for my own saddle. After
another couple of lessons I managed to find a saddle that fitted my
Welsh Section D, Nirvana Tywysog (Pie). For people that know
Pie, the thought of someone riding him side saddle was a scary
one! Pie took to side saddle well and we ventured out to the Area
9 Spring Show 2012 as our first outing aside. We had a very
successful 2012 competing at many shows aside. More recently I
have started jumping Pie aside, which is an even scarier thought
for those that have seen him jump! Pie jumps open workers and
thought that all jumps should be cleared in the same fashion no matter what the height!
So far the jumping is going well though so hopefully we will continue to learn and grow
together for 2013.
I have started one of my other horses aside recently. Rughavens Senitta (Sunny) is a very
eye-catching spotted knabstrupper who belongs to a family friend in Ireland. She is very
green but is coming along well. She needs lots of schooling work but I hope that she will
be out aside this year. She has only been jumping astride for a couple of weeks but looks
like she has potential, so who knows, maybe she will be jumping aside before long too? I
rode Sunny aside at Kirkcudbright Riding of the Marches (a tradition of riding around the
towns boundaries) last year and we got the best turned out from 120 horses, and became
the first previous principal (Cornets lass) to win the accolade at Kirkcudbright.
This year I would like to compete at the Nationals and progress with my side saddle
jumping and hopefully have another successful year.
CAROL ROGERSON, COMMITTEE MEMBER
I grew up dreaming about horses and riding ponies and confess to
being a life long horse addict! I am currently the proud owner of two
lovely mares Lottie and Penni which I have enjoyed riding in most
disciplines including dressage, showing, show jumping over the years.
I now mainly compete in riding horse show classes and affiliated
novice and elementary dressage with the odd jumping class when I'm
feeling brave enough!
I am very new to the side saddle world and having always admired it
over the years I thought it looked really elegant but difficult but
determined not to be put off by this I still wanted to one day have a go
myself. When I bought Penni, my grey irish mare to do showing and
dressage I found out by accident from the previous owners she had done some side
saddle riding in Ireland so I took this as a sign that I should try it. After speaking with Dan
Moriarty who encouraged me to go along to the Autumn Area 9 show on foot in 2011 to
watch where I met the members who were welcoming and friendly, and as I drove home I
promised myself to give side saddle a go in the New Year. I filled in the SSA membership
form in January 2012 followed by a couple of lessons with Shirley Justice-Vose in Ayrshire,
I hired one of her saddles and off we went to try some competitions. We managed to get to
a few shows including RHS, Blair Atholl and all the Area 9 club days. Our biggest
achievement so far is being placed 3rd at the Highland Show in the Best Horse class and
being awarded Best Newcomer in Area 9 2012. I enjoy riding sideways so much and I'm
definately hooked! I'm looking forward to doing more competitions this year and improving
on what we have learned so far and might even try popping a few jumps! Also hoping to
introduce Lottie to a side saddle when she is back in work this spring and will be
encouraging all my friends to have a go. Roll on the summer!
HINTS, TIPS AND FACTS
This quarter, we are looking at tips on how to keep your tack clean and shiny and in
perfect show condition.
 Use an old pillow case to cover a clean bridle in transit.
 If the bridle keepers keep slipping down, put an elastic plaiting band on the bridle
and then push the keeper over it.
 To stop the saddle slipping, put a damp chamois leather underneath it, making sure
it is completely flat to avoid injuries to the horse's back
 Make sure your side saddle has a buckle guard on the nearside straps. It saves the
saddle from needless damage.
 Do clean a doeskin seat, use breadcrumbs. They will absorb dirt and grease and
will restore the nap of the doeskin.
 Doeskin can also be cleaned using by using very fine emery paper, but this should
not be done to often as it it is damaging to the doeskin.
 Always have your saddle checked and repaired by a qualified saddler trained in
side saddle work. Safety is vitally important, especially when jumping.
 Car chrome cleaner or a Brillo pad can be used to remove rust from D-rings and
stirrup fittings on older saddles.
