HISTORY OF THE
PGA OF AMERICA
One of the world’s largest sports organizations, the PGA
of America and its 28,000 men and women Professionals
teach and grow the game every day, making golf more
appealing to the millions who play it while working to
attract many more who have expressed interest in trying
the game or returning to it.
Celebrating its Centennial in 2016, the PGA continues
to lead the multi-billion dollar golf industry. The PGA
also conducts some of golf ’s premier championships,
including the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, Senior
PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and
partners with the LPGA and KPMG, a leading tax, audit
and tax advisory firm, to conduct the KPMG Women’s
PGA Championship.
The PGA’s origin can be traced to January 17, 1916, when
a group of New York area golf professionals, accompanied
by several prominent amateur golfers and members of the
media, attended a luncheon in the former Wanamaker
Store in New York City. The group was invited by the
Taplow Club, an informal business group begun by
entrepreneur Rodman Wanamaker, bearing the nickname
after a home he leased near London on Taplow Court.
Wanamaker, heir to one of the country’s largest
merchandise empires, enlisted golf professional and
employee, Tom McNamara of Brookline, Massachusetts,
as coordinator. Among those in attendance were legendary
golfer Francis Ouimet and acclaimed golf course designer
A.W. Tillinghast. The purpose of the gathering was to
discuss forming a national golf organization, which would
promote interest in the game and help elevate the vocation
of the golf professional.
Wanamaker, who viewed the public’s growing enthusiasm
for golf as the beginning of a national trend, promoted the
idea of an association to help accelerate the growth of the
game.
On April 10, 1916, the PGA of America was formed in New
York City, electing 78 members. The PGA established two
primary objectives, which today still drive its efforts: Serve
our members and grow the game.
98th PGA Championship
July 28 - 31
Baltusrol Golf Club,
Lower Course
Springfield, N.J.
Since its inception in 1916, the PGA Championship has
evolved into one of the world’s premier sporting events.
Each summer, one of the nation’s leading golf facilities
hosts golf ’s best professionals as they compete for the
Rodman Wanamaker Trophy and a major championship
title. The PGA Championship was born in the mind of
department store owner Rodman Wanamaker, who saw
the merchandising possibilities in a professional golfers’
organization.
77th Senior PGA Championship
presented by KitchenAid
May 26 - 29
Harbor Shores
Benton Harbor, Mich.
The most historic and prestigious major championship
in senior golf, the Senior PGA Championship presented
by KitchenAid celebrates its 77th edition in 2016. The
championship was born on the grounds of another of
golf ’s majors at the invitation of one of the game’s greatest
players. At the suggestion of renowned amateur Bobby
Jones, the inaugural Senior PGA Championship was
conducted at Augusta National Golf Club in 1937, just
three years after the first Masters Tournament.
62nd KPMG Women’s
PGA Championship
June 7-12
Sahalee Country Club
Sammamish, Wash.
The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is operated
by PGA of America in partnership with the LPGA
Tour, marking the first collaboration between the two
governing bodies. This major championship features a
$3.5 million purse — amongst the highest in women’s
golf, live weekend coverage on NBC and the strongest
field in all of women’s golf. In 2015, Inbee Park
finished at 19-under par at Westchester Country Club
in Harrison, N.Y. to win the KPMG Women’s PGA
Championship for the third consecutive year.

49th PGA Professional
Championship
June 26 - 29
Turning Stone Resort
Verona, N.Y.
Since 1968, the PGA Professional Championship
annually showcases the playing talents of grassroots
PGA of America members. Over four decades, it has
evolved into the largest all-professional competition
in golf, featuring some of the finest players in the
association.
The 49th PGA Professional Championship returns
to Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York, after a
dramatic finale in 2006.
41st Ryder Cup
Sept. 27 - Oct. 2
Hazeltine National Golf Club
Chaska, Minn.
The Ryder Cup is one of the most spirited, exciting and
compelling events in sport. It spans nearly 90 years,
involves the greatest players in the world and produces
some of the greatest moments in the game. The
competition officially began in 1927 when enterprising
English seed merchant Samuel Ryder presented a gold
cup that bears his name. The U.S. team defeated Great
Britain, 9 1/2 to 2 1/2, in the inaugural matches in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
Since then, the Ryder Cup has expanded to involve the
finest players of Europe. Except for a span (1939-45)
during World War II and following the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks upon America, the Ryder Cup has been held
biennially with the U.S. and Europe alternating as host.
The 2016 Ryder Cup will be contested at Hazeltine
National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, with U.S.
Captain Davis Love III and European Captain Darren
Clarke guiding their respective squads.

The PGA Player of the Year Award is given to the top PGA Tour player based on his tournament wins,

winning all other designated PGA Tour events. In addition, there is a 50-point bonus for winning two
majors, 75-point bonus for winning three, 100-point bonus for winning four. For top 10 finishes on the
PGA Tour’s official money and scoring average lists for the year, the point value is: first, 20 points;
then 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. Any incomplete rounds in the scoring average list will result in a .10

VARDON TROPHY
JORDAN SPIETH
Dallas, Texas
The Vardon Trophy, named by the PGA of America in honor of legendary British golfer Harry Vardon,
was preceded by the Harry Radix Trophy, which was initiated in 1934. The Radix Trophy was presented to Ky Laffoon (1934), Paul Runyan (1935) and Ralph Guldahl (1936). Radix was an Illinois businessman who was a member of the PGA Advisory Committee. The PGA changed the name of the award
to the Vardon Trophy in 1937 to commemorate Harry Vardon, who died the same year. The Vardon
Trophy is a bronze-colored plaque measuring 39” by 27” and features sculpted hands replicating
Vardon’s famed overlapping grip on a golf club. From 1947 to 1987, the Vardon Trophy was awarded
to the professional golfer with the lowest scoring average. In 1988, the criteria was adjusted to award
the Vardon Trophy to the touring professional with the lowest adjusted scoring average. It is based on
a minimum of 60 rounds, with no incomplete rounds (i.e. stipulated rounds as defined by the Rules of
Golf, as approved by the USGA and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland), in events
co-sponsored or designated by the PGA Tour. The adjusted score is computed from the average score of
the field at each tournament. As a result, a player’s adjusted score may be higher or lower than his actual
score. For example, a player shoots 70 each day at a tournament while the field average was 73. His
280 total would then be adjusted to 268 since he actually played 12 shots better than the field did during the tournament. Any player with an incomplete round will be ineligible to win the Vardon Trophy.

PGA GOLF PROFESSIONAL
HALL OF FAME
On Sept. 8, 2005, the PGA of America honored 122 PGA members who
have made significant and enduring contributions to the association
and the game of golf, with engraved granite bricks on the south portico
of the PGA Museum of Golf in Port St. Lucie, Fla. That group included
44 original inductees between 1940 and 1982, when the PGA Golf
Professional Hall of Fame was located in Pinehurst, N.C.
The 2005 Class featured then-PGA Honorary President M.G.
Orender of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Craig Harmon, PGA Head
Professional at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., and the
2004 PGA Golf Professional of the Year.
The PGA of America Hall of Fame Class of 2015, honored Nov. 12, at
PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida:
Front Row (from left): George Hannon, Lee Trevino, Tracey Stewart
(for late husband, Payne Stewart); Ray Cutright; Back Row (from left):
Thomas W. Bolt (for late father Tommy Bolt); Charles Sifford Jr. (for late
father Charlie Sifford); and Michael Doctor.
Orender led a delegation of 31 overall Past Presidents into the Hall,
a list that begins with the Association’s first president, Robert White,
who served from 1916-1919. Harmon headed a 51-member group
who were recipients of the PGA’s highest annual honor — PGA Golf
Professional of the Year.
Dedicated in 2002, The PGA of America opened the PGA Museum
of Golf in PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., which paved the way
for a home for the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame.
The PGA Museum of Golf celebrates the growth of golf in the United
States, as paralleled by the advancement of The Professional Golfers’
Association of America.

Orange County Convention Center | Orlando, Fla.
The PGA Merchandise Show, the MAJOR of golf business,
grew from humble beginnings in Dunedin, Florida, in 1954,
when a handful of golf merchandisers assembled in the
PGA National Golf Club parking lot during a series of PGA
winter tournaments. In 1963, when the exposition grew, it
relocated to the east coast of Florida. Since 1985, the Show’s
permanent home has become the Orange County Convention

game.
The PGA Merchandise Show is not open to the public and is
organized in partnership with the PGA of America and Reed
Exhibitions for the international golf industry.
The PGA of America sold an equity share to Reed Exhibitions
in 1998. Through the partnership, the PGA Merchandise
Show has evolved to become an all-encompassing global
platform for the introduction of new products, indoor and
outdoor product testing, wide-ranging education seminars,
industry symposiums, fashion features, player development
programs, professional networking events and more.
The PGA Merchandise Show annually welcomes some
1,000 top golf companies and brands and more than
40,000 industry professionals from around the world to the
industry’s annual global summit for the business of golf.
The PGA Show Outdoor Demo Day, the world’s largest
professional outdoor golf testing event, begins PGA Show
Week at the Orange County National Golf Center. During

GOLF CLUB
PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
PGA Golf Properties Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of
the PGA of America, advances the PGA’s objectives to
promote enjoyment and involvement in the game by providing
accessible, award-winning championship golf courses, learning
centers, research, education, licensing and advisory services.
Since forming PGA Golf Properties, the PGA has acquired,
developed and licensed world-renowned golf properties,
including PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida, which is
home to PGA Golf Club, PGA Center for Golf Learning
and Performance, PGA Education Center and St. Lucie Trail
Golf Club. PGA Golf Properties also owns and operates
Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, ranked as one of
“America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” by Golf Digest.
These properties allow the Association to host many of its
own championships and serve as model facilities within the
industry.
PGA Golf club—which serves as the winter home to PGA
Professionals—is an Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary
and features 72 holes of championship golf by architects
Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Jim Fazio. There is also a sixhole Short Course designed for families and beginners. The
facility renovated its Tom Fazio courses in 2006, renaming
the North and South Courses the Ryder and Wanamaker
Courses, respectively. A restoration of the Dye Course, led by
its namesake architect, was completed in 2007.
In 2015, the facility doubled the size of its clubhouse to more
than 20,000 square feet, under the guidance of renowned
architect Tom Hoch. Meanwhile, St. Lucie Trail Golf Club
(formerly PGA Country Club) received beautification upgrades
in 2014, when it was transformed into a public golf course
designed for the community.
The PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance is a
35-acre practice facility that offers opportunities to work on
every facet of the game. The facility—designed as a prototype
that other clubs can copy—is ranked among the “Top 50
Golf Ranges” by Golf Range Magazine and features more
than 100 practice stations, putting greens and chipping areas.
Visitors, including national and junior national golf teams
from Canada, Germany and Denmark, have traveled to the
Center to enhance their games. Home to PGA of America Golf
Schools, the facility also features innovative technology, golf
fitness and professional club fitting and repair.
Valhalla Golf Club in Lexington, Kentucky, has hosted several
historic golf events, including the 2014, 2000 and 1996 PGA
Championships; 2008 Ryder Cup; and 2011 and 2004 Senior
PGA Championships presented by KitchenAid. One of only
five venues to host each of these marquee events, Valhalla was
also the setting for the 2002 PGA Professional Championship.
In 2011, the PGA partnered with architect Jack Nicklaus on
a golf course modernization program that enhanced the golf
experience for Valhalla members and challenged the world’s
finest players during the 96th PGA Championship in 2014.

PGA OF AMERICA SECTIONS
PGA OF AMERICA SECTIONS
The PGA of America is divided into 41 geographical Sections. Each PGA Section operates within the framework of the
PGA Constitution. Many Sections also are sub-divided into Chapters for the geographical convenience of its members.
Two Sections (Kentucky and Metropolitan) have geographical Districts.
The Sections hold elections each year for individual officers and maintain their own staffs, headed by an executive
director who administers the operations of the Section. The Sections maintain a close working relationship with The
PGA of America National Headquarters staff in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Each Section conducts its own events for PGA members, apprentices and amateur golfers. For example, each
individual Section conducts an annual Section PGA Professional Championship for its members, in addition to other
member tournaments throughout the season.
The Sections also provide the grass roots network necessary to accomplish direct communication with the nation’s
26 million golfers. The Sections also conduct regional qualifying events for amateur events, including the Junior
PGA Championship.
Furthermore, PGA Sections conduct educational programs, workshops and seminars for the benefit of their members
and apprentices. They work with the national office to provide nationally renowned experts for these programs, thus
assisting PGA Professionals in fulfilling The PGA’s mission of making golf fun for everyone, everywhere.
