Anglican Priest in North Mallorca
based at St Andrew’s, Puerto Pollensa
The island of Mallorca is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and as a result
attracts millions of holidaymakers each year from northern Europe. The British Consulate
estimates that there are approximately 30,000 British residents on Mallorca for the whole or
part of the year alongside over a million tourists each year. Most people’s impression of
Mallorca is from the brochure photographs of the holiday hot-spots such as Magaluf and
Arenal in the south but they are a far cry from the 99 per cent of the rest of the island. Mallorca
has mountains higher than any in Great Britain and miles upon miles of beautiful rolling
countryside with quiet, tranquil calas and Mallorcan villages nestling in the hot summer sun or
the temperate winter sunshine. As the holiday makers are relaxing in the sun imagine how
many people are working hard, giving birth, dealing with dramas, bringing up children and
getting married. The Anglican Church on Mallorca never has a dull moment! Living on Mallorca
all year round, however, one experiences more than hot sunny days and tourists. The real
Mallorca has its seasons and festivals; stormy winter skies and sunsets; a gentler and relaxed
attitude - mañana is not just tomorrow.
The Chaplaincy covers the whole island with congregations in Palma, Cala d’Or and Puerto
Pollensa. The vacancy is for an ordained person to lead St Andrew’s congregation in Puerto
Pollensa and to work with the Chaplain in charge of the island based in Palma. The chaplain
will minister to the north of the island and assist in the rest of the Chaplaincy where necessary.
Obviously this would include weddings, funerals and memorial services together with pastoral
care and hospital visiting. The chaplain will have a high degree of independence and will be
responsible in the first instance to the Revd. David Waller, Chaplain of Mallorca, which is part
of the Diocese in Europe.
Puerto Pollensa and its beautiful bay are situated on the northern corner of the island of
Mallorca less than an hour from Palma, its capital. Once a small fishing port, it is now a
charming holiday destination in an unspoilt corner of this popular holiday island. The
picturesque countryside around Puerto Pollensa is a colourful pastiche of fertile fruit and
almond tree orchards bordered by gently rolling hillsides and to the north, dramatic soaring
rocky mountains. It is a family resort and during late and early season is visited frequently by
cyclists and bird watchers. There are many local festivals to enjoy throughout the year.
At St Andrew’s Puerto Pollensa the main thrust of our work is church growth - over the past
two and a half years we have grown by about 30%. We have achieved this through engaging
worship, three Alpha groups, house groups, a strong prayer group and social witness by
St Andrew’s Community Care. We give away over 10% of our income in charitable donations
– currently to a children’s home in Kenya run by Spanish Franciscan Sisters, Compassion
(an evangelical charity for street children in India), the Diocese of Peru and Age Concern
Mallorca. We have also begun to support CARITAS, a Diocese of Mallorca charity for the poor
and underprivileged on the Island.
Eucharistic Worship takes place every Sunday morning at 9am during the summer and
experimentally at 5pm during winter months and, by kind permission of the Parish Priest, we
have the use of the Roman Catholic Parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Plaza,
Puerto Pollensa. In the months of June and October our congregations often exceed 100
worshippers of all denominations. There is also a Thursday lunchtime celebration of the
Eucharist where the attendance varies between ten and thirty. We make a donation to the
Catholic Parish, which also allows us to use the Church Hall for fund raising and concerts etc.
So the post holder will need to be able to collaborate with the Roman Catholic Clergy, but will
have no church buildings to worry about. The worship is Anglican but tries to be sensitive to
the many denominations that attend. In broad terms, the chaplaincy has a relaxed modern
Catholic Eucharistic tradition. We celebrate a full liturgical Holy Week and have begun a
Pilgrimage to the nearby mountain Shrine of Our Lady of Lluc. Our congregation has a broad
age range, but as the Church is consciously looking for growth, one area for development is
work amongst young people and children. At the moment there are none amongst our
members yet a number of younger families live and work in Puerto Pollensa, Pollensa and
Alcudia.
The Churches in the Diocese of Europe have to be self-financing and St. Andrew’s depends
entirely on the regular, proportionate and realistic giving of its members together with the
generosity of visitors and residents. There are a limited amount of fundraising events. Worship
and ministry thrive here. Our congregation consists of residents, regular ‘comers and goers’,
and holiday visitors and there is no sense of competition or hierarchy between the three
sources of membership. We welcome all denominations and nationalities.
Wedding Blessings
The ministry through wedding blessing services and renewal of vows has grown considerably
over the last few years and is a significant part of the mission of the chaplaincy. It requires an
openness to take couples as they present themselves without being judgmental.
Meetings
It is expected that the Palma and Pollensa Chaplains will meet on a regular basis. The
Pollensa Chaplain is also expected to attend the Annual Clergy Chapter, the Archdeaconry
Synod Meeting which is usually held in January or February, together with the Annual
Catalonia Chaplains’ Meeting usually held in May or June.
The accommodation is a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, fully furnished house with hall, kitchen,
outer kitchen, cloakroom, office/meeting room and living - dining room. As well as furniture,
the house has adequate bedding, kitchen equipment, china, glass and cutlery. It is situated
very near to the beach and a short walk from the port, church and shops. The house has wellmaintained small front and rear gardens. There is central heating, air conditioning and satellite
television with a freesat box which records programmes. Full use of the Chaplaincy car.
The Successful Candidate will :
1. Be an English speaking, eucharistically centred liberal catholic priest within the Anglican
Communion with a life founded in their own rhythm of regular prayer.
2. Have ability to devise and provide engaging modern worship.
3. Have an outgoing and flexible personality, with an ability to listen sensitively to the pastoral
needs of those with and whom they minister, and respond with appropriate understanding.
4. Have an open and collaborative style of working with both lay and ordained colleagues.
5. Have an ability to see the social problems and encourage the congregation to engage with
them.
6. Have a proven track record in Church growth to encourage and develop the growth now in
progress.
7. Be a person who enjoys preaching and teaching, and is able , through these, to both
encourage and challenge the congregations
8. Be a person who will celebrate the sun, sea and Spain, but with an ability not to be
seduced by what appears to be a very attractive lifestyle.
9. Have a valid driving licence.
10. Need a sense of humour and the ability not to take themselves too seriously.
Desirable qualities:
1. Ecumenically aware.
2. Speak Spanish or have a go at learning it.

Conditions of service.
1. Furnished accommodation as outlined above is provided, free of all outgoings, repairs and
buildings insurance.
2. There is a fully equipped office with computer, printer, landline and mobile phone.
3. All mains water, heating and electricity bills for St. Andrew’s House are met by the
chaplaincy.
4. A car is provided free of licensing, insurance and servicing costs. All petrol used on
chaplaincy duties is reimbursed, as will be other forms of necessary travel.
5. The cost of telephone installation, maintenance, rental and business calls is met by the
chaplaincy.
6.
Stationery, postage and official hospitality are met by the chaplaincy.
7.
Insurance of the personal possessions of the priest will be their responsibility.
8. The chaplaincy will meet the cost of transporting the personal effects of the priest from the
UK as defined in the Diocesan Handbook i.e. clothes, books, pictures and small items.
The outward and return flights for both the priest and partner are paid.
9.
Spanish Social Security will be paid by the Chaplaincy.
10. Salary 26,000 euros per annum for a full time post.
11. An annual return flight to the UK for the priest and partner.
12. The salary is reviewed in January each year.
13. Six weeks holiday, including Sundays each year, plus Spanish dias laborales (public
holidays).
