HENRICO COUNTY SECURITY DIVISION DIVISION OVERVIEW Henrico County Security Division is a non-sworn Security Division responsible for protecting citizens and employees and safeguarding County properties. Some responsibilities include alarm monitoring & response, CCTV surveillance, foot & vehicle patrols, first responders to building emergencies, investigate thefts or related incidents. The Division provides services to the County twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. DIVISION HISTORY Henrico County saw a need to establish a security force to patrol and protect its properties and to assist the citizens and the employees that utilized those properties. The Security Division was created in 1974 and placed under the Superintendent of Central Maintenance. A few years later the responsibility was reassigned to the Henrico Police Division in the early 80’s. The Department of General Services assumed responsibility of the Security Division in the late 80’s where it remains today. DIVISION HISTORY The Security Division at its inception was comprised of four Security Officers. Over the years, the complement has grown to twenty-eight personnel. The Security Division is comprised of a Chief, three Sergeants and twenty-four Security Officers. OUR FUTURE As the County’s growth continues, the Security Division is prepared to meet the service deliverables of the future in addition to maintaining a safe and secure environment for citizens and employees occupying County facilities and properties. “Proud of Our Progress. Excited about Our Future” TRAINING Recruit Security Officers attend a 6 week Basic Security Academy to learn all aspects of the position. Upon successful completion of the academy, Recruit Security Officers participate in a 10 week field training program where they are mentored by Training Officer and perform duties under real conditions. Security Recruits receive 600 hours of training before working in a solo capacity. TRAINING CURRICULUM Security Officer Recruits receive formal training in Firearms education and safety, live practical firing, street survival, defensive tactics, civil and criminal liability, OC spray, expandable baton, first Aid-CPR & AED certification, NIMS, CISM, and “Active Shooter” training. 200 hours during Basic Security Academy. 400 hours during Field Training Program. SECURITY CONSOLE SECURITY CONSOLE The Security Console monitors fire, intrusion and duress alarms for County facilities. This includes but is not limited to: Henrico County Public Schools General Government facilities Courthouses Public Libraries Recreation and Parks facilities SECURITY CONSOLE The Security Console receives alarms through a centralized monitoring system and personnel will dispatch the appropriate resource such as police, fire or security to investigate conditions. Various County facilities are monitored through enhanced CCTV equipment. Security Console manages card access system in 52 facilities countywide for enhanced security. BUILDING SECURITY BUILDING SECURITY Security Personnel are assigned to specific County facilities. They answer questions and provide directional assistance to the public. Security personnel assigned to a building have specific tasks and assignments unique to each location. Security Personnel conduct visible patrols of the Buildings and properties. BUILDING SECURITY Security Personnel monitor access during special events or meeting in the building. Specialized training such as Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T) is provided to Security personnel assigned to work in Mental Health facilities. Security Personnel respond to building emergencies and provide required assistance. BUILDING SECURITY Security Personnel control after hours access to certain buildings for special events and meetings. Security Personnel assist Police and Sheriff with exterior security during Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission meetings. Security personnel coordinate with Police and Sheriff on operational and emergency response plans in case of a major incident. PATROL OPERATIONS PATROL OPERATIONS Patrol Officers conduct visible and proactive patrols of County facilities and properties to deter crime and safeguard persons and properties. Patrol officers respond to emergency incidents on County property and take appropriate action or assist as needed. IN SUMMARY… Henrico County Security Division proudly partners with Henrico Police Division, Henrico Sheriff’s Office and Henrico Division of Fire in protecting County facilities. The Security Division works cohesively with County departments to provide a safe and secure environment for County employees and for citizens who visit facilities and conduct business.
