It was meant as a follow-up to the June 12th public consultation meeting on the draft bylaw to amend the municipal urban plan. The October meeting provided an opportunity to respond to questions and comments generated by the bylaw in the past few weeks. A study we conducted helped identify a dozen projects that would create more than $204 million in new real estate value and generate more than $2 million annually in property taxes. The projects would be in sync with the City’s development plan, since it would preserve the city’s character and natural environment and ensure its long-term fiscal health. Ville de Deux-Montagnes was developed as a bedroom community in the late 20th century. As a result, the residential sector accounts for 85% of current tax revenues. Real estate development reached maturity in the 2000s, weakening the City’s financial position. By encouraging responsible urban redevelopment based on sustainable development principles, our vision for Deux-Montagnes over the next 15 years consists of a lively, welcoming, and environmentallyconscious city, a population under 20 000, a better distribution of the tax base for our citizens, more local shops, restaurants and offices on our main streets, better access to our waterways and walking trails, as well as revitalized and vibrant hubs with public squares that make neighbourhoods more livable and attractive. Suzette Bigras District du Grand-Moulin Mario Saint-Charles District du Lac Tom Whitton District de l'Olympia New revenues must be generated to ensure the City’s long-term fiscal health. This entails the redevelopment of specific areas. Our urban plan needs to be amended before we can move forward. This will enable us to plan our development according to our needs, while complying with new government regulations. Amending our urban plan involves overseeing and structuring areas for development and redevelopment in order to meet our objectives. It also requires the establishment of densification thresholds in order to preserve our parks and green spaces, as well as the City’s image and distinctive character. If your city’s future concerns you, have a look at the October 3rd presentation and other related documents on our website: www.ville.deux-montagnes.qc.ca Nathalie Chayer District de la Gare Marc Lauzon, mayor Guillaume Bouvrette District du Coteau The next issue of the Express will take place on February 2 2013. Ville de Deux-Montagnes is pleased to announce that its community hall located at 200 Henri-Dunant, in the basement of the Community Centre, has just undergone a facelift! The premises, intended mainly for accredited organizations, underwent a complete overhaul. Its new floor and freshly painted walls make it a very pleasant venue for up to fifty people. For more information, please contact the Leisure and Community Services Department at 450-473-4700. appreciation night at the fire Department Annual On May 4th the official medal ceremony was held for members of the Deux-Montagnes/Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac Intermunicipal Fire Department. Members of the squad and the intermunicipal fire committee were all invited to take part. On this special evening, 10 honoured members received either a medal for completing 20 years of dedicated and loyal service or a ribbon for 30 years of service. The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal was created on August 29, 1985, to honour members of a Canadian fire service in the performance of duties involving potential risks. Exemplary service is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency. Holding a BA in Urban Planning, Nadine worked in a variety of positions where she honed her communication, project management and coordination skills. Through the generosity of Susan Campbell, a native of DeuxMontagnes who now lives in Chicago, citizens can now relax on one of the two new memorial benches that were installed this summer near 5th Avenue and École des Mésanges (14th Avenue). Welcome aboard, Nadine! The benches were donated in memory of Susan Campbell’s mother and her late grandparents (Dubuc-Gore family) who lived in Deux-Montagnes. On October 12th, Suzanne Campbell sat on one of the benches next to her father and her spouse, immortalizing this symbol of recognition and generosity. A new shop on 7th avenue! altération Sylvie Let’s not forget that Susan Campbell had already provided the City with a family memorial bench that now sits on the floor of the Holy Family Church. She plans to provide more benches in the future. What a great way to remember the city’s first residents and make the park more attractive! Good news for citizens – a new person will be greeting them behind the counter of the sewing shop located at 222, 7th Avenue in Deux-Montagnes. A new owner, Sylvie Raymond, took over the business on March 1st, 2012. The friendly and cheerful seamstress is a perfectionist who specializes in tailoring clothes for men and women. Her prices are competitive, and she also provides external references for more specialized services. Help us do our job by complying with applicable by-laws and using common sense practices: The more modern lettering remains clearly visible, and the service always top-notch! Drinking and Driving Please note that the SPRDM will be setting up numerous roadblocks in the coming months to crack down on drinking and driving. The drinking and driving problem isn't confined to repeat offenders. According to police, most offences and alcohol-related accidents involve drivers with no prior DUI violations. It is possible to avoid the tragic consequences of drunk driving. Choosing not to drive after consuming alcohol is the safe and responsible approach. Otherwise, the snowplow will most likely push it back into your driveway. • To facilitate snow-clearing operations, avoid leaving your car on the street all day. • Place your trash or recycling bin inside the edge of the sidewalk or asphalt so street and sidewalk crews don’t need to step out of their vehicles. • Keep an eye out for heavy-duty vehicles clearing snow or spreading abrasives. Here's some info to help you make sense of it all. Exemples: Spiraea japonica «Flaming Mound», Japanese spirea Spiraea japonica «Anthony Waterer», Japanese spirea Spiraea japonica «Neon Flash», Japanese spirea Plants are usually named after the botanists who discovered them. The name may also refer to the colour of the plant, its flower or foliage, its particular shape or unique growth habit, its foliage or its ability to attract insects. A hybrid is the result of a cross between two plants of the same genus or same species. Hybridizations are natural or artificially induced through controlled pollination. To indicate its hybrid origins, an "x" is placed before the genus name for an intergeneric hybrid or before the species name for an interspecific hybrid. To help us understand, let's take a look at the classification system of plant names, as there are more than 600,000 plant species on earth. Differences between family, genus and species are based on the theory of evolution. Exemples : Spiraea x arguta, (hybridization of Spiraea japonica x Spiraea albiflora) Spiraea x vanhouttei, (hybridization of Spiraea trilobata x Spiraea cantoniensis) The family consists of genera that share common genes and traits, since they come from the same parents. As a result, these plants resemble each other more. Names of plant families end in "aceae." For example, the Rosaceae family includes the crab apple (Malus sp.), spirea (Spiraea sp.), cinquefoil (Potentilla sp.), cherry (Prunus sp.) and rose (Rosa sp.). The genus is the first term or word in the nomenclature. It includes all species of a plant. For example, the different types of spirea are all grouped together under the Latin name of Spiraea. The species is the second word in the nomenclature and is written in Latin in lowercase. It distinguishes members of a group from each other. Plants in this group are able to reproduce among themselves, but usually not with members of another species. The species’ unique genetic features are passed on from generation to generation through their seeds. Exemples: Spiraea latifolia, broad-leaved meadowsweet Spiraea japonica, Japanese spirea Spiraea thunbergii, Thunberg's spirea The term variety refers to plants of the same species that differ from other members of that species. The plant’s characteristics can be passed on from one generation to another through seeds. A cultivar is the result of a hybridization, selection or mutation. Contrary to a variety, a cultivar is not capable of transmitting its characteristics by seed. Cultivars are propagated vegetatively by such means as cuttings. Variety or cultivar names must be enclosed in quotation marks and be capitalized.
