more about it when the DGE returns from the US.

We have been in touch with Sam at Anjali House and have told him we will be
donating USD2,000. He will be getting back to us to let us know what he proposes
to spend it on. I think it is also worth highlighting, when there was much publicity
about Bangkok being flooded. Cambodia was suffering from severe floods too and
this meant we some of Anjali was damaged and the children couldn't attend class.

Puan Jasmine our advisor at SMK Kelana Jaya will let us know when the SMART
board is installed. EP Tech have paid a visit to the school to see where they need
to install it. The SMART board is partially funded by the Crocodile Fund. We have
reconnected with the British Council Professional Learning unit. Puan Jasmine
will be arranging for a convenient date for staff to attend workshops on teaching.
The government is looking at changing to outcome based learning and this maybe
something the teachers may like a workshop on.
Last but not least, many thanks to PP Manfred who donated RM1,000 during our
anniversary. He has promised to come back at some point and we look forward to
that day. I think we all had a good evening and many thanks to all who made the
evening special.
Chinese New Year is around the corner, for those who are travelling home drive
carefully. For those who enjoy eating and don't want to complain about weight
gain later, all I can say is exercise ....discipline.... Have a good new year.

PASSING OF EDWARD’S
MOTHER
The club offers its condolences to Edward Pon on the
recent death of his mother, Madam Ng Yok Bee. She
was 84 years old.
Edward thanks the club for sending a wreath, and to
members who attended the wake. He offers special
thanks to Dr Hari for arranging for his friend, Dr Yong,
to visit the home to certify his mother’s death.

20TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER
The Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya has reached a milestone, the 20th anniversary of the day it was chartered, on
14 January 1992. We celebrated it in a very low key and informal way by holding a dinner at Restaurant Siti
Et Sara at Dataran Jelatek in Ampang. Altogether, there were about 40 of us, including some spouses and
family, former members, a few of the volunteers from the Free Outpatient Clinic and four Rotaractors from
the Rotaract Club of Kelana Jaya.
Tina welcomed everyone to the dinner, and attributed the club’s past successes to the commitment of its
members over the two decades of the club’s existence. She also announced the generous donation of RM1,000
by our former past president, Manfred.
Dinner was buffet-style, and everyone enjoyed the delicious food put on by Siti, our former member (who is
married to Omar who is also our former member).The club can take some credit therefore, we think, for getting
the two of them together. This is likely the first club dinner we have had where no alcohol was served. However,
this did not diminish everyone’s enjoyment of the evening. We must also thank Jo who liaised with Siti and
finalised the menu and all other F&B details.
After dinner, Wong showed a video he had created, highlighting some of the past achievements and projects
of the club. It certainly brought back some memories, and we have to thank Wong for making the effort to
put together this video.
Next, the club presented a cheque for RM1,000 to the Rumah Pengajian Xavier, a home for disadvanaged
children. The home was represented by Francis Lai and Cherie Wu. Francis thanked the club for the donation
and told us a bit more about the good work carried out by the RPX.
At last year’s anniversary dinner, the club recognised one of our spouses, Chua, for her support of the club.
We did the same again this year, this time by presenting a memento to May Wah. Yuriko helped by buying
the memento, which is set of tea trays. We managed to keep it a surprise so May Wah looked suitably, well,
surprised.
There was a short interval while we got the anniversary cake (or cakes, as there were two) ready. The cakes
were contributed by Siti, and we thank her for her kind gesture. For some reason, we sang the traditional
“Happy Birthday” song. There isn’t really a “Happy Anniversary” song, is there?
What would a party be without some party games, and these were organised by Lynn and Boet. We played
several games including charades, and everyone participated gamely, with the “winners” if they can be called
that, each getting a small prize.
We ended the evening with a raffle. We had printed 80 tickets, which we thought would be more than enough.
However, we failed to account for Jo’s great selling abilities. She had sold out all the tickets before the dinner
even started, thus netting the club a tidy sum of RM400. The prizes were a set of traditional Chinese figurines,
donated by Wong, and a lovely glass bottle, purchased for the club by Tina. The figurines were won by May
Wah, and the glass bottle by CB.
As everyone left, they were given a memento - a glass mug specially designed for the occasion. Again, this
was personally donated by Wong, and we must thank him again for his support for the dinner.

'PEACE THROUGH SERVICE’ IS 2012-13 R I THEME
RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through
Service in 2012-13.
Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the
2012 International Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary district
governors.
"Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a
realistic goal for Rotary," he said. "Peace is not something that can only
be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic
struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every
day and in many simple ways."
Peace has different meanings for different people, Tanaka said. "No
definition is right, and no definition is wrong," he said. "However we use
the word, this is what peace means for us. "No matter how we use, or
understand the word, Rotary can help us to achieve it," he added.
Tanaka, a businessman from the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, shared
how becoming a Rotarian broadened his understanding of the world. After
joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in 1975, he said, he began to realize
that his life's purpose was not to make more money, but to be useful to
other people.
"I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could
help to build peace," Tanaka said.
He noted that the Japanese tradition of putting the needs of society above
the needs of the individual helped his country rebuild after the tsunami
and earthquake in March.
"This is a lesson that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of
others as more important than our own needs -- when we focus our energies on a shared goal that is for the
good of all -- this changes everything," he said. "It changes our priorities in a completely fundamental way.
And it changes how we understand the idea of peace."
Tanaka will ask Rotarians to focus their energy on supporting the three priorities of the RI Strategic Plan , he
said. He added that he will ask the incoming leaders to promote three Rotary peace forums, to be held in
Hiroshima, Japan; Berlin; and Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
“In Rotary, our business is not profit. Our business is peace,” he said. “Our reward is not financial, but the
happiness and satisfaction of seeing a better, more peaceful world, one that we have achieved through our own
efforts.”
