WHAT DO - Dayton Metro Library
YOUR Dayton Metro Library Programs, Events & Activities KNOW JANUARY - APRIL 2016 books TO WHAT DOyou Want DAYTON METRO LIBRARY DaytonMetroLibrary.org JJANUARY NU RY - APRIL AP L 2016 2 6 Contents A Message from the Executive Director 02 04 Libraries enhance the quality of life for all who use them. Librarians hear all the time, “I just love the library!” Many people have treasured memories of visiting their library as a child, or taking their own children or grandchildren to the library. A Me Message sage from the Executive Director Children’s Activities - Super Science Saturdays, page 7 - Too Cool for School Week, page 8 - Sensory Storytime, page 12 13 Check Out a Sprout Backpack and Nurture YOUR Little Learner! 14 16 Tween Activities 22 Adult Activities - Computer Gaming Lab, page 15 Teen Activities - 3-D Maker Kit, page 18 - Teen Karaoke Night, page 21 - National Poetry Month Poetry Slam, page 24 - Job Seekers programs, page 26 - GET ON BOARD with the Big Read, page 35 One of the things I enjoy most about my work is ensuring the Library and our librarians remain relevant in our rapidly changing world. Recently, we completed a strategic planning process at the Dayton Metro Library, which builds upon our intensive facilities plan with additional insights from current community research and industry best practices. We believe our new plan positions us to contribute to large-scale, community-wide priorities while continuing to play a vital role in the personal lives of our patrons. The new strategic plan calls for the Library to prioritize its services in these areas: • LIBRARY HOURS Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Sunday (Temporary Main) 1:00-5:00 p.m. • Explore our aspirations. We will maximize the potential of our new buildings and stretch the definition of what a library can be - and do - for the community. • Expand partnerships. We will collaborate with strategic partners to achieve common goals, impacting kindergarten readiness, education and lifelong learning, and navigating career, college and workforce opportunities. All Libraries are closed January 1 for New Year’s Day and January 18 for M.L.K. Jr. Day Sunday hours begin at Miami Township Branch on January 10, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Free sign language interpretation can be arranged for any Library program by calling 937.496.8901 at least one week in advance. Programs, events and classes may be photographed or videotaped for Library promotional purposes. Notify Library staff if you prefer not to be documented. 2 - Library News Evaluate and enhance our core services. We will continue to identify and provide services and programs where the Library is uniquely qualified because of our role as a trusted community resource. • Equip the Library’s staff and support systems. The Library has an obligation to ensure a responsive and responsible organizational structure. We will be diligent in our investments in technology and in hiring, training and staff development. We will prepare ourselves financially for long-term sustainability. The plan, Strategies for Impact, covers the years 2016-2018. In this timeframe, we will have completed 16 beautiful new or expanded Libraries, averaging twice the size of our current branches, and a new Main Library with public space more than three times greater than before. But more than the size of our buildings, we are re-imagining what we can accomplish in them. Our new spaces will encourage people to gather, create and learn together. We will define the Dayton Metro Library as a world-class organization, as well as a valued contributor to our local community. This program guide lists hundreds of opportunities for you and your children to be informed, inspired and enriched at Your Library. Visit us and see how we are not only the Library you loved as a child, but also the Library you’ll need well into the future. Tim Kambitsch Executive Director WHAT DO WANT know? Q.
