A Big Welcome to SAIL Dandenong
Robinson’s June Newsletter!
We’ve had an exciting few weeks which included
a visit to our sister campus, Dandenong Langhorne,
Multicultural Celebrations day with SAILors dressing
up in national costumes and sampling a delicious
range of foods from different continents and
celebrations as surprise farewell party for Matthew
Brodie, our Saturday co-ordinator for some 3 years.
And in the upcoming weeks…
Tutor Talks
Tutor talks are a brilliant forum for tutors to access
a wealth of knowledge from past tutors and other
experts, and ask all those questions you never get
time to address during SAIL time. Unfortunately our
last tutor talk was cancelled due to illness,
so apologies to those of you who made it along.
At the next SAIL Tutor Talk, Gatwech Puoch and
Sara Karim will be giving a talk about the refugee
settlement experience in honour of ‘World Refugee
Day’. The talk is scheduled to run on Wednesday 20
June from 6.00pm – 8.00pm at:
Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 193 Hotham Street
(cnr Clarendon St), East Melbourne
To access this venue:
Enter via Hotham Street
Parking free city side of Clarendon St only
l
Tram numbers 75 and 48
l
Jolimont Train station
l
Please also make a note in your diary of the rest
of the tutor talk dates for the year:25 July, 5
September, 3 October and 7 November 2007.
A Big Welcome Aboard to Aidan and Tom!
Congratulations and a warm welcome to Aidan
and Tom, our new co-ordinators! Aidan is a
Chinese-speaking, guitar-playing Star Wars mega-fan.
Tom on the other hand, likes traveling, surfing and is
a big Essendon supporter. Please have a chat and get
to know them, if you don’t already!
This month’s theme: Sudan
In the past month, we busily studied “Aboriginal
Australia” with some of our tutors jumping
right into it. Mary brought in her didgeridoo,
SAIL Dandenong Robinson Campus
page which everyone took turns to blow into – this was
really fun but unfortunately, we didn’t get much
music out of it! Some of our SAILors also pointed
out the Aboriginal flag in Dandenong’s main strip!
Our theme for this month is “Sudan”. It will give our
SAILors an opportunity to learn about their parent’s
country. Please ask your students to compare life
in Sudan to life here in Australia – what things are
the same, what are different, what they like/don’t
like/miss about Sudan, what they like/don’t like in
Australia. The possibilities are endless!
If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, here are
some helpful sites:

edu/Country_Specific/Sudan.html
Another interesting point to note is that 20th
June is World Refugee Day. This year is the 6th
anniversary of World Refugee Day, which was a
celebration designated by the United Nations,
in honour of the courage, resilience and strength
of refugees. On this day, thousands of organisations
in hundreds of countries will come together
to focus global attention not only on the plight
of refugees and the causes of their exile, but also
on the refugees’ determination, their will to survive
and the contributions they make to their host
communities. In Melbourne, UNHCR will launch
a Refugee Speaker’s Bureau of young refugees
willing to share their personal stories to help build
understanding about refugee issues. This year’s
theme for World Refugee Day is “A New Home,
a New Life”.
SAIL Penpals – Letters Wanted!
Now that penpals have been sorted and matched,
it’s time to encourage SAILors to practice their
English and write to their penpals. They will get a
chance to meet them (if they haven’t already) at the
SAIL Birthday Celebrations. Please post your letters
by putting them into the red letterbox on the stage
and Matthew Post will make sure they get to your
pen pals!

the SAIL literacy-leveled books are located on the
smaller curtained bookshelf while the rest of the
books are on the main bookshelf.
Pinboards – calling for contributions!
As you may have noticed, we have a pinboard that
is currently full of SAIL Away photos. Please feel
free to contribute any SAIL-related photos and
encourage students to pin their work up for display.
Alternatively, if your student isn’t keen to display
their work, they can store their work in folders
labelled with their name. These folders are to be
kept in the plastic tubs located at the front of the
stage. This is a great way for your student to see
how they have progressed and what they have
achieved throughout the year.
The Age newspaper – and interesting things
to do with it!
Here are a few fun activities you can do with the
paper every week:
1.Cut out letters or words and stick onto
another sheet of paper to ‘write’ a letter in
‘ransom note’ style.
2. Make a newspaper hat.
3. Have a copy for each of your students and do a
‘word search’ – say a word and get the students the
find it in the article. See how many times the same
word comes up.
4. Talk about what makes a movie popular.
Then look through the movie ads in today’s paper
SAIL Dandenong Robinson Campus
page 11. Make an alphabet book.
12. Cut out as all the words and pictures that begin
with “P”.
13. Read an article without an accompanying picture,
then draw your own based on the text.
14. Go on a scavenger hunt in your newspaper:
Find a teaching job ad, house for sale in Dandenong,
a movie showing at the cinemas, a music artist
touring Australia, a sports star’s name etc.
15. Make papier- mâché!

Fitzroy Ball Fundraiser
Total trivia
SAIL has over 300 volunteers at six campuses,
all of whom donate at least 2 hours each week
to SAIL. This amounts to at least 26,400 voluntary
hours donated each year to the Sudanese community
through SAIL. Assuming that our time is valued
at $15 an hour, this means SAILors donate about
$396, 000 of time annually. Over almost seven years
