Brothers,
We are off to a great start this year, and
Spring is just around the corner! Section COC is
coming up and we are gearing up for Spring Fellowship. We are planning all sorts of cool activities and
classes, so be sure to sign up soon.
With spring comes summer, and it is already
time to start thinking about camp. Our LEC recently
called all of our troops that have not signed up for
summer camp, and it went really well! We are the
first and only lodge to do this, and I hope it catches
on. We have been making great improvements to our
camp promotions program, and it will pay off when
we see lots of scouts at Summer Camp.
Along with camp promotions, we are also
always looking to improve our chapter programs. We
have already had a few chapter events this year, and
can always have more! If you have any ideas of
things you want to do, give me a call. We want to do
what YOU want, so just let us know.
I’m also excited to announce a new lodge
event, a Lodge Lock-in! For the past couple of years
we have been holding an ordeal fun night, and starting this year, we are going to combine that program
into a lodge wide lock-in. This is going to be an awesome event, with lots of fun and games. Right now
it’s still being planned, so if you have ides of places
to go or things to do let me know. This is a brand
new event, and a great opportunity to try new things!
I hope you are as excited about this year as I
am, and I look forward to seeing you at Spring Fellowship. If you have any ideas or questions please
feel free to give me a call at 319-899-8161.

will have games and activities on Friday night. Saturday we will have classes and sessions on Order of the
Arrow programs and Native American Arts, Crafts,
and Culture.
Saturday night at around 7:00pm, everyone
will get to dance in a Pow-wow, so be sure to bring
your Native American regalia if you have some! We
will also have the annual Assist the Arrowman Auction. The Pow-wow and auction are open to family
and friends. The weekend will conclude Sunday after
breakfast and clean up. Things you will need to bring
are a cot/mat, a sleeping bag, uniform, sash, and

As service chair for the lodge, it is my responsibility to have a One Day of Service event sometime
throughout the year. Last year we had two One Day
of Service events; one was at Camp Hitaga and the
other at Camp Wapsi. I am looking for new ideas for
this year so if you have any please send me an email.
These are daylong service projects where we help
anywhere in the community for non-scouting groups.
Workdays at camp are still the first Saturday
of every month. If you are planning on going, please
contact the rangers ahead of time so they can plan for
projects and food. Hope to see you at the workdays.

LEC Approves Unique Patch Set for 2011
For the year of 2011, Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock will be creating a patch set designed by Loren Waterman.
There will be the base patch, as shown below, which will be four inches in diameter. The individual feathers,
to attach to the base patch, will be one inch wide and four inches long with the name of each event embroidered onto the feather : Spring Fellowship, Spring Conclave, Fall Conclave, and our new event, Fall Fellowship.
The base patch will be sold for $3.00 at the main events where we typically have merchandise for sale;
Spring Fellowship, Spring Conclave, and Fall Conclave. The feathers may then be earned by attending each
event. You will receive these feathers after attending the events. They will be available for pick-up when other
merchandise is typically for sale. Extras may be for sale after everyone has received their patches, or if you
notify Chris Merck or Mandy Martens that you are interested in purchasing an extra complete set.
Our new large back patch, also designed by Loren Waterman, will appear as below being eight
inches long from the top of the patch, to the tips of the feathers. These will be $8.00 apiece and will be available for all members at Spring Fellowship.

Hello Arrowmen,
I am your 2011 Treasurer ready to serve, and
I will do it to the best of my abilities.
Spring fellowship is coming up soon, and that
means it is time for the annual “Assist the Arrowman” auction. This is an auction with real money,
and there are always many items to bid on, from Indian regalia, to figurines, to wooden flutes. We are
looking for quality items to be auctioned off. If you
have something to donate, please bring it along to the
Spring Fellowship. All items will be on display prior
to the auction. The proceeds from this auction will go
to the “Assist the Arrowman Fund”. This is a scholarship fund which youth members of our lodge can
apply to get half the cost of an OA event paid for.
If you have any questions, feel free to give
me a call. If you leave a message though, please state
your name and phone number.

2010 Service Patch Wrap-Up
Thank you to everyone that came out to camp
this year and provided hours of service. As it is now
past January 31st, I have a final total of 114 service
cards. That accounts for 2280 hours of service! Well
done Cho-Gun! 120 patches have been ordered, and
will be available for pick-up at Spring Fellowship.
The price of the patch has been determined at the
February LEC meeting, but it is safe to say they will
be $5.00 or less per patch.
Just a quick thought, that leaves six that may
mysteriously appear in auctions over the next few
years... Keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open.

The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that can
be bestowed upon a member of the Order. The Vigil
was started in the year 1915. Since that year thousands of arrowman have been honored for their exceptional, unselfish service to their lodge, the Order
of the arrow, scouting, or their scout camp.
To be eligible for consideration for the Vigil
Honor a member must be in good standing with their
lodge, and have completed 2 years as a Brotherhood
member. Upon completion of these requirements,
members are chosen by a committee and then must
be approved by the National OA committee.
A Vigil can be identified by a triangle on the
OA sash and, in our lodge, a wooden triangle suspended on the individual’s logchain. If you would
like more information, please send me an email.

Today the most common construction of women's
shawls across Indian country uses nylon chainette string to form
the fringe on the hems of the shawl. This material is popular
because of the large variety of colors available, it's relatively
low cost, and the graceful way it hangs.
Specific shawl decorations vary by regional areas and
by tribal designs, but the way the chainette fringe is added to the
shawls has become more or less universal. The instructions here
will assist you with the basic techniques needed to complete a
shawl.
Material used for the shawl works best if it is fairly
wrinkle resistant. The size of adult shawls during the past several decades usually consisted of about 2 yards of 60 inch material. The 60 inch dimension is the width of the shawl for an adult.
These were fringed all the way around the hem and when worn
were folded about in half. Often then, two rows of fringe were
seen when the dancer was viewed from the back.
Recently, the shawl dancers have shortened the length
of their shawls, often using 45 inch wide material, only fringing
three sides. Many traditional women dancers have followed this
trend.
The 45 inch dimension is the length of the shawl and
the width is cut to fit the wearer, usually about 60 inches for an
adult. The top hem is not fringed, but turned under slightly
when worn over the shoulders. This makes a lighter shawl and
not quite so hot when dancing in warm temperatures.
The traditional way to size the width of shawl needed
is to stretch out your arms side to side, shoulder height and
measure the distance from left finger lips to right finger tips.
The shawl should be wide enough to hide your hands as you
grasp both side hems with arms nearly out stretched and the
shawl over your shoulders.
Cut the shawl to the desired size, allowing for the hem.
Turn over the hem and sew as shown in Figure 1.
For these instructions we will assume you will be making 14 inch long fringe, which is the most common length.
Make a fringe cutting board will help you save a lot of time preparing the fringe for tying. Follow Figure 2 and build a cutting
board. Nails are driven into a piece of board at a slight angle.
Wind chainette fringe from a spool around the nails of
the cutting board about 20 or 30 times. Prop the board upright
and cut through all of the fringe string between the bottom two
nails. See Figure 3. Repeat this as you need fringe.
The next step is to tie the fringe strands along the hem
of the shawl. For this purpose, we suggest using a crochet hook
large enough to hook the chainette string, but not the shawl fabric as you pull the chainette through the material.
The fringe is tied every 3/8 inch along the hem. Insert
the point of the crochet hook through the shawl material behind
the hem as in Figure 4. Take one piece of chainette from the
cutting board. Catch its center point with the crochet hook and

WOMEN'S SHAWL
pull the chainette back through the material. Pull the strands
until they are even, and tie all the strands together with a overhand knot as shown in Figure 5. When tightening the knot, pull
it up towards the hem so it hangs about l/8th inch away from the
hem.
Notice that two of the four fringe in this tied bundle are
connected. After finishing one whole side of the shawl, take a
sharp scissors and cut each of these parts of the bundles free.
The tying operation will go faster if you can drape the
shawl over a frame, table, or bed so you can use both hands
freely.
Nylon chainette fringe will fray over time from use, so
some shawl makers use Fray Check or Super Glue to keep the
ends from unraveling. Put a small drop on the end of each
fringe.
Today, many shawl makers are decorating their shawls
by using fabric paints. Just follow the directions on the paint
package. Ribbon applique also may be used for designs.

Brothers,
We are off to a great start this year, and
Spring is just around the corner!

Hi, my name is Josh Hotz. I will be your 2011
Activities Chairman. I have been in Order of the Arrow for three years and this is my first year on the
Lodge Executive Committee. Our next lodge event is
Spring Fellowship. This year it will be at the Amana
Elementary School, in Middle Amana, on March 1820, 2011. Sign-in will begin at 6:00pm Friday. We
will have games and activities on Friday night. Saturday we will have classes and sessions on Order of the
Arrow programs and Native American Arts, Crafts,
and Culture.
Saturday night at around 7:00pm, everyone
will get to dance in a Pow-wow, so be sure to bring
your Native American regalia if you have some! We
will also have the annual Assist the Arrowman Auction. The Pow-wow and auction are open to family
and friends. The weekend will conclude Sunday after
breakfast and clean up. Things you will need to bring
are a cot/mat, a sleeping bag, uniform, sash, and
clothes for the daytime activities. Thanks for your
time. I hope to have a great year as your Activities
Chairman.
