HOUSTON - The KS/AIDS Foundation of Houston has just established offices in the Liberty Bank Building, 1001 Westheimer, Suite 193, and began operation of a 24-hou r telephone service easily remembered as (713) 524-AIDS. Questions, referrals and donations should be directed into this telephone funnel, Michael B. Wilson, executive office manager, summarized for TWT NEWS. Co-chairs of the Volunteer Services Committee are Ted Hewes and Bill Scott, who outlined some of the patient services now available. New services include a support system for health professions, a su pport system for patients, a support system for lovers, friends and families of patients, plus legal, financial, housing, transportation and food resource services. "The foundation is in need of volunteers to help with these programs, as well as to help staff the new office in Liberty Bank," TWT NEWS was told. KS/ AIDS FOUNDATION URGES AIDS FUNDING HOUSTON - On Friday, May 27,16 informative pages on AIDS were taken to 16 City Hall offices by Michael B. Wilson, president of the KS/AIDS Foundation, and Sue Lovell, board member of the Gay Political Caucus. They visited with the offices of mayor, comptroller and each of the 14 City Councilmembers to present an updated education package on AIDS. Each delivery contained a personal letter from the foundation. Wilson stressed to TWT NEWS that the City Hall visits were purely informational and educational in nature, and were not to be construed as "lobbying or participating." The topic is a sensitive one. There is a difference between educating city council and lobbying for funds. The taxexempt status of the KS/AIDS Foundation "hangs in the balance," Wilson explained. An upcoming vote on the city budget is to include approximately $70,000 in the City Health Department budget for AIDS projects. GPC URGES MORE AIDS FUNDING HOUSTON - This city's GPC passed a resolution May 18 asking the U.S. Congress to allocate more funds for AIDS research. Copies of the resolution, which is similar to one passed by the San Francisco City Council, will be sent to Houston Mayor Whitmire, Houston city council members, and the Harris County congressional delegation. "The mayor is personally committed to doing all she can, and GPC-endorsed council members are 150 percent supportive," GPC president Larry Bagneris told TWT NEWS. Basically, the resolution "urges that significant new funds be reallocated immediately within the Department of Health and Human Services to greatly increase AIDS research," Bagneris stated. Bagneris also told TWT NEWS that "hopefully, this resolution will help PRGE 11 TWT JUNE 3 . 9. 1983 TWT JUNE 3 - 9. 1983 TH~ D' '--'T'- -,.-,--,~JJ_,~A,WS (713] 529-9903 • HOUSTON • 1419 nICHMOND NOW OPEN "7AM WITH ALL NEW HAPPY HOURS AND NEW LOWER PRICES UNDER THE NEW OWNERSHIP OF "ALABAMA" WHO'S NOW ON RICHMOND AVENUE WITH OUTLAWS DEE, WALLY, HANK AND B.J. speed up funding for AIDS research. It is part of GPC's continuing effort to lend support to the fundraising and educational efforts of the KS/AIDS Foundation," formerly the KS/AIDS committee. Bagneris further explained that the GPC became heavily involved in the AIDS issue last February when he, vicepresident Marion Coleman, and Polltcal ACtion Coordinator Terry Harris, met with Mayor Whitmire. "It was the number one item on the agenda," Bagneris said. After receiving the mayor's commitment, the group gave elected officials time to work on the problem, Bagneris noted. Since that time, the mayor has directed the City Health Department to look into the AIDS problem. An AIDS Task Force has also been established. Mayor Whitmire also reaffirmed her support in a letter read at the May 2 AIDS vigil. Efforts are also underway to include $71,000for an AIDS data-gathering project in the new city budget. Bagneris also told GPC members he had discussed AIDS funding with U.S. Representative Mickey Leland several months ago. Leland recently became a co-sponsor of the Waxman Bill, which seeks to set aside $40 million for emergency health crisis research. CHE URGES MORE AIDS FUNDING HOUSTON - Recently, an informal gathering of representatives of the Citizens for Human Equality (CHE), the Houston GPC, and other health-oriented organizations, met to hear information about the City's Health Department budget for 1984. The proposed AIDS documentation and surveillance project is not currently included in the budget according to several sources with the Health Department and at City Hall. Steve Shiflett, president of CHE, provided the information which was given him by Health Department Officials. "The project is on the 'wish list,''' he said, "and is in competition with issues important to other groups." At the gathering, a network among different groups (CHE, GPC, KS/AIDS Foundation) was begun, and it was agreed that more interaction among the groups was necessary in order to provide a unified effort on the AIDS issue. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled. Shiflett also announced his group was sponsoring the Committee for Public Health Awareness to network with professional organizations and individuals on AIDS, and that the committee will serve as a lobbying effort to employ the necessary government resources to obtain funding and services at all levels of government. The committee's first project was a constituent letter to 4,500 people asking them to inform Houston Mayor Whitmire that AIDS is our priority, and that the Health Department project for AIDS documentation and surveillance deserves funding. "This project of the Health Department would provide the epidemiologic data necessary in order to generate research grants, as well as provide data that would justify the need for patient care services, screening and coordination among health care professionals," Shiflett told TWT NEWS. "We mailed the letter on the evening of ABC-TV's 20/20 expose on AIDS, so we feel that the response will be significant," Shiflett continued. "Mayor Whitmire should get the message that we want the project taken off the 'wish list' and included in the final budget. She is sensitive to the AIDS issue, but she has every department competing for these same funds. "We must play the game like these power brokers play it. Call and/or write Mayor Whitmire and the city council now!" Houston City Hall's phone number is (713)222-3011,and Mayor Whitmire's office number is (713) 222-3141. "Politicians respond to lobbying, as evidenced by the recent Public Utility reform movement ," Shiflett noted. Organized to solicit funds for AIDS research and patient services, TWT NEWS was assured that a full accounting of all funds raised would be published. "We haven't the funds within our community alone to take care of the many programs," project coordinator Joe Porro explained to TWT NEWS. Therefore, beginning last May 27, yellow business reply envelopes were distributed at various gay businesses outside metropolitan Houston. The envelopes are labeled Lobbying Fund for AIDS Research. Additional envelopes may be obtained by calling the new committee at (713) 528-6333. D/FW GAY HISTORY TOP FILM SHOW FORT WORTH - Phil Johnson, metroplex historian of gay culture, presented a wonderful slide show presentation on "The Gay Rights Movement in the Metroplex" last Tuesday, May 31 at the Center for the Community, 2412 lipscomb in this city. The slide presentation was in preparation for Gay Pride Week, and the public was invited. As always, Mr. Johnson was his usual humorous and informative self. "We need more Phil Johnson's to document gay life," one observer noted. "He's a wonderful man who gets involved." Larry Leutwyler acted as the coordinating minister, TWT NEWS learned. A small service fee of $15 is still required, which includes a complete STD exam, testing and medications if needed, TWT NEWS was reminded. The Montrose Clinic board of trustees and the administrative director of the clinic feel that the new, expanded hours will be a gfeater service to its patients and provide for reduced waiting time. HIGHTOWER RUNNING FOR CITY COUNCIL HOUSTON - Nikki Van Hightower, long time supporter and friend within the gay community and executive director of the local Women's Center, officially announced her candidacy for Houston City Council in a press conference held June 1_ Members of her campaign and finance committees were also on hand to answer questions at the conference, which was held at the Meridien Hotel, TWT NEWS reported. Hightower is the latest candidate to toss her hat into the ring for the 1983 elections. Her endorsement by Houston's GPC will be pivotal after formal screening. Supporters of Hightower may contact Tammy Allyn, (713) 493-6883, or Cynthia Howard, (713) 453-2118_ DALLAS TAVERN GUILD FORMED DALLAS - The Dallas Tavern Guild was formed last week with the stated purpose to improve communications with each other, to work toward a celebration of gay pride, and to raise money for AIDS education, testing and research. The Dallas Tavern Guild told of their planned activities for Gay Pride Week, which include a June 26 climax of a bar owners appreciation carnival and picnic. Bars who have joined the new guild, as reported by Richard Rogers of TWT NEWS, are Snake Pit, Round-Up, Eighth Day, Hideaway, Crews Inn, No Name, Crib, Saint, Unicorn, High Country, Chaps, Jugs, Hidden Door, and Tex's Ranch. SMU GAY ·GROUP TO BE REVIEWED DALLAS - The Gay and Lesbian Support Organization of Southern Methodist University (SMU)appealed to president Donald Shields last week for help in getting the organization recognized as an official campus group. Progress was made, TWT NEWS learned, as Shields agreed to review the appeal carefully. However, he added that he "must continue to consider the views of the United Methodist Church" in making his "final decision." Shields explained to reporter Jane Wolfe of the Dallas Morning News. "I believe both the very vocal opponents as well as the proponents have not voiced the complexities of my view that we must consider the views of those with the United Methodist Church who are opposed to recognizing this group." The appeal represents GLSSO's third attempt to gain recognition. The first attempt was turned down by a caustic 17-11 vote by the student senate on April 19. A second attempt came on May 3, when the appeal was denied. The entire affair has been a red hot subject, debated furiously, and demonstrated about repeatedly. ALGPC ELEeTS NEW LEADERS AUSTIN - On May 24, the Austin Gay/Lesbian Gay Political Caucus (ALGPC) elected new steering committee members. Marvin Prevost, out-going male co-chair of the organization, presided over the meeting, which was attended by only 21 members, TWT NEWS reported. After hearing Nancy Lasel, representing a gay-tolerant church, request ALGPC support and the establishment of a membership committee, the floor was opened for nominations to the steering commitee. Due to the extremely poor turnout at this important meeting, all but one at-large representative's position were uncontested, and three positions could not be filled. Janet Cobb and Juan Ochoa were elected as female and male co-chairs, respectively. Also elected were Jim Oberkrom, political action committee chair; Steve Quiroz, program chair; Gary Fitzsimmons, legislative chair; Donna Johnson and Janna Zumbrun, at-large positions reserved for former steering committee members; and Melita Abrego and Mary Summerall, at-large positions. Everyone elected, except Ochoa, has served on the steering committee at some time during the past five years. Summerall had opposed Jay Cherin in the at-larqe place 4 position in a heated contest. Cherin is the present chair of Gay Students Association at U.T. and an officer of TGLSOC, the statewide gay organization for students. Two weeks ago, Cherin had endorsed a letter which appeared in TWT criticizing the ALGPC. Cherin said he "hoped ALGPC would change its focus from partisan politics to serving the gay community." Elizabeth Maclain, out-going female co-chair, and other community leaders, including Cherin, told TWT NEWS that they are hopeful that the changes from partisanship to serving the Austin gay community's political needs can happen from within the organization. I Dear TWT: Don Sanders, in response to your letter to TWT the week of May 27 [Vol. 9, No. 10], concerning the AIDS Vigil, I would say you obviously missed the whole point of the Vigil. I was there not to convince some diety of our needs, but to convince some politicians, and to show support for our community and those who are ill with AIDS, and especially to show concern for those who have died from AIDS. What difference does the format make? Our statement was firm, loving and uplifting. If you have a plan to achieve the same results for the masses of unbelievers, I suggest you get on with it. To date, I have received no reply from ALGPC darlings Wilhelmena Delco and Gonzolo Barrientos, or from Terral Smith, who sits on the committee which we hope will entomb this bill forevermore. Gerald Hill wrote a lukewarm, but passible response, saying he planned not to support the bill. Only Bob Barton, Jr. expressed vigorous opposition to the bill, pledging to "do all I can to defeat this ridiculous bilL" His response is all the more courageous since his district is mostly to the south of Travis County, centered in San Marcos, where human rights is largely an untested issue. I agree that ALGPC does not represent the Austin gay community. We need a lobbying effort that will not strike secret deals and will demand candidates with gay rights credentials-not just standing as liberal Democrats. Bonzith Houston, Texas In Memoriam Dear TWT: One of my earliest memories of coming out in Houston five years ago was being dragged to a party at the home of Geoff Thurman and Dennis Bergen. Geoff and DenniS were partying on Fire Island that Labor Day weekend ... the two lovers had generously left their home open for their friends to enjoy. I subsequently met many wonderful people in Houston, a close-knit-family who showed me some of the best times of my life. Among those people was Geoff Thurman. From the moment I met Geoff I was intrigued by him.... I was amazed at Geoff's vitality and the way people seemed to be drawn to him. Geoff was always surrounded by friends because he was himself generous, caring and personable. My heart goes out to my Houston friends-and especially to Dennis-who were much closer to Geoff than I. There is an empty place, a deep hurt in our lives because this free spirit is no longer with us. But the pain of losing Geoff will be somewhat alleviated, I think, if we continue to care about each other in the generous and energetic way that was so characteristic of Geoff. Nick Cuccia San Francisco, California Testing for AIDS Dear TWT: As a concerned physician involved with the problem of AIDS both locally and nationally, I feel that I must comment on several issues with regard to testing for AIDS in people who have no symptoms. TWT JUNE 3 • 9. 1983 The first issue is that screening or testing for AIDS, especially by means of a blood test, currently should not be considered reliable. In a letter to the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine in December of 1982, Dr. Roger Enlow (currently New York Mayor Koch's advisor on gay and lesbian health problems) and I addressed this issue. There are several tests being used to evaluate AIDS patients. One of these tests is a study of J-cells, which tend to be found in lower amounts of AIDS patients. When a laboratory offers J-cell testing to non-ill people, whether gay or straight, it implies that this test is a standardized evaluation of one's immune system, capable of predicting the risk of AIDS. However, data on J-cell testing is still to be completely evaluated and further research is needed if it is to be a satisfactory screening test. In fact, there is now some evidence that some people may have temporarily lower numbers of Tcells after some viral infections but return to normal in time. Thus, if someone is otherwise healthy but has an abnormal J-cell test, this may not necessarily indicate that he has AIDS. In addition, if someone has normal T·cells, there is currently nothing to indicate that he will not get AIDS. The second issue is that in most cases, this type of testing is ordered by a physician to evaluate a patient. When the doctor gets back the results, he or she needs to determine if those results are normal or abnormal. This depends in part on the doctor's judgment of the condition of the patient. Thus, anyone who has any symptoms of AIDS, or wishes to be checked for AIDS, should see a physician and not just go to a laboratory for a blood test. Thirdly, because of AIDS, there have been and will be attempts by many individuals in both the gay and straight communities who will try to make use of the fear of AIDS as a means of making money from the gay community. Just because someone says they are doing something for or about AIDS, does not necessarily mean that they have the interests of gay people at heart. Some people may be simply capitalizing on their fears. Comrade Loves of the Samurai, Reviewed • Ir PAGE 22 by David Fields Though there may be flaws in this little lotus blossom of a book from Japan, its overall beauty and intrigue may be its most rewarding feature. Saikaku Ihara wrote these short stories about the love between samurai in the late 17th century, and the stories were first available in the West in London in 1928 as part of a set entitled Eastern Love. A second book is included, an anthology of popular geisha folk songs, with the title, Songs of the Geisha, unrelated to Ihara's works. These tales are taken from various TWT JUNE 3 - 9, 1983 TWT JUNE 3 - 9, 1983 other Ihara works, such as Glorious Tales of Pederasty and Tales of the Samurai Spirit. All have been translated by E. Powys Mathers, noted for translating The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night. This translation was rendered from a French translation by Ken Sato, from the Japanese, so the exact meaning of his (Ihara's) wording and intent may be obscured by the translation through an intermediary language. One of Ihara's novels, written in 1682, is Japan's first true novel: Life of a Satyr. His book, Comrade Loves ... , is reviewed here primarily for its historical interest, but also to demonstrate the depth and beauty of Japanese culture and the universality of gayness in all cultures. The West's mining of ideas and literature from the Orient proceeds into all aspects of philosophy, religion, psychology and mysticism. The entire perspective of holistic medicine owes its generation here to the Eastern view of man, his mind and body as one. Those familiar with Japanese thought and custom will better appreciate the short stories, events and characters contained in them. The ritual of Hara-kiri is mentioned often in a few of the stories, due to the value held of honor over life itself, and the "reality" with which the Japanese viewed the spirit world and their ancestors. As Terence Barrow, Ph.D., states in the introduction, " ... the theme is the homosexual love of samurai for samurai or the love of samurai for page or court boy bent on becoming a samurai .. to the old Japanese such love among samurai was quite permissible. The sons of samurai families were urged to form homosexual alliances while youth lasted, and often these loves matured into lifelong companionships .... In the traditional setting they were highly regarded." He very clearly "represents a strange admixture of the bushido spirit [embodied in the code of the samurai) and the homosexual urge to love comrades in arms with intense devotion to a cause." He is an example of the people Ihara writes about, now well known in the literary world. Unfortunately, the dark side of Japanese culture was its disdain for women, who were for breeding, while boys were for pleasure. "Women were excluded from important arts because they were of little social importance. In the circumstances it was fitting that men should seek men for their most intimate life." This is best seen in the Songs of the Geisha, who tell of their lack, or loss, of love for the men they service. The translation of what amounts to short poems, seldom follows a central idea or topic, probably due to the inherent differences in thought in Western and Eastern cultures, and thus is difficult to understand. Many of the stories in Comrade Loves of the Samurai are poignant, the characters always courageous, and, by reading this book, the enlightenment of the West continues. 'IV? I was visiting an old friend of mine in Texas City a few weeks ago. author Dale Young, who has written guidebooks for Houston and Texas. While sitting on a pier fishing, I noticed this cheerful lady sitting a way down on the same pier. We waved and eventually began chatting and sharing her Thermos of Bloody Marys. When conversation eventually drifted to show business (as mine tend to), 10and behold, I was speaking to the lady, Vesta Mahoney, who used to be Judy Garland's secretary in 1963. After visiting her house, seeing her Hollywood memorabilia and listening to her stories, I kne« this was a "hot" one. I made another trip to Texas City with my recorder and brought along our editor/photographer, Blase DiStefano, for another enjoyable evening of Bloody Marys, Vesta and stories. The following are some of them. PAGE 42 TWT JUNE 3 ' 9. J9831 TWT - How did you get involved in Ms. Garland's life? Vesta - I was working in Dallas with a young lady I had known for years; her mother was the governess for Judy's two younger children, Joey and Lorna, whom she had by Sid Luft. This girl was working for me; I was personnel director at Blue Cross in Dallas. Anyway, Frank Sinatra was doing a show in Las Vegas and wanted Texas girls in the show, so I made Corlynn enter and she got the job, went to Vegas, and married Michael Callen. He used to have a series on television. After she married him, I went out to visit them, and her mother asked me if I would consider quitting my job and being Judy's secretary. I didn't know anything about Hollywood or what it would be like to be a secretary to a "star." I was 50 at the time; I'm now 71. Her agents from Hollywood and New York called me on Tuesday and wanted to know if I could be there on Friday. Well, at that time, my husband and I had an argument that lasted three years. I was in Dallas and he was in the service at Ft. Hood, and I had sold the house and was waiting for the loan to come through. So I told them I could be there by Friday if I could come back Christmas-they called me in September-to finish up this business. So I went. How was Hollywood when you arrived? When I got there, I went to Brentwood where she [Judy] lived; I had to live with her. My understanding with her agents was that I could have my own apartment. She requested I live in the house with her. I ended up living in her pool house. Did she more or less want you as a Companion? I do not mean as a lover. Yes, she was so lonely. She trusted me very much because I was a country girl, had no talent, and wasn't using her TWT JUNE 3 ' 9. J983 INTERVIEW as a stepping stone like everyone else around her. I knew nothing of the politics of Hollywood. She was around 5'2" or 3". I'm nearly 6 foot tall. When I first met her, she shook hands with me and said, "My, you're a tall girl." I stayed in her house overnight before I met her the next day. She asked, "What do you mean killing our president?" She knew I was from Dallas. She was a very close friend of the Kennedy's. I told her I was just as sorry as she was; I had seen him five minutes before he was shot. I was in the street watching his motorcade. -m;m:"" !$iI$iiiWiI!$k I, % What were your duties for her? I never did find out. She was making her TV series at the time. I went to the studio with her every day. Her agent told me I was to "take care" of her, and that's as far as they would go. I never did any work. When her mail would come in, I sent her fan mail to a fan club, the bills were sent to her accountants, legal matter were sent to her lawyers, and that's the "work" I did. I would help her get ready to go to the studio. She got up at noon and had to be at the studio by two. Her hairdresser usually picked us up. At the studio, my duties were to guard the door and answer the phone. She stayed in a mobile home in the studio. We usually left at dark. She worked like a Trojan, and she was so frail. PAGE 43 Would you go home after you left the studio? No. She did what she wanted to do, and I had to take her gowns and jewelry home. That scared me. I had to take a taxi back to the house every night. How did you handle "crashers" at the studio? I had a stock answer: "Ms. Garland is very busy right now." Mel Torme was always there chewing his gum like a rabbit. I don't like him. Did you see what around her? was going on Almost immediately. She did have some honest friends, however. Mickey Rooney was very protective of her. He gave me his private number and told me to call him anytime, day or night, if she needed hel p. Did she realize what was happening around her? Oh, yes. I talked to her for nearly two hours one night, and she told me how her mother pushed her into all this. She felt her mother used her for monetary purposes. Didn't her mother get her strung-out on speed? No, the studio did. That's what she said. There will be others who say differently, but I believe the studio did it. Mickey [Rooney] verified it. Mickey talkPAGE 44 ed to me at length and wanted to know if I could get her out to play golf. She belonged to a country club. I never was able to. Was she completely controlled? She was by people such as Mel Torme on her music, her producer on the show. This is the way things are done in Hollywood. The stars don't do what they want to do. I couldn't under, stand it. My idea in Dallas was that the stars told them what to do. There was an awful lot of publicity about her leaving hotel bills in England; the White Plaza in Dallas sued her for not paying her bill. She didn't have anything to do with paying her bills. She paid a battery of accountants to pay her bills. What did they do with that money? What was her relationship children, Joey and Lorna? with her She loved those kids. I remember once Joey complained about having to ride the bus to school, and she said, "You forget you're Judy Garland's children; you get on that bus like everyone else, go to school and make your grades." She adored her family. tlza [Minnelli] was at home then; she was 17. She was adorable. She worshiped her mother. Liza was going for an audition in New York and came in one morning and asked me to "read" with her. So, TWT JUNE 3 • 9. 1983 when my turn came, I read it. She said, "Can't you put something in that? I can't get a clue from the way you're reading it." I said, "Liza ... I'm not an actress." She said, "You can put something into it!" When she started to leave, she called me into the back bathroom and wanted to make sure I was going to look after her mother. She was very caring and concerned about her mother. For Christmas, we all decorated the tree, and Judy decided she I did was in her dressing room. She wanted a certain makeup. It was a pancake thing. I lifted it up and it was full of water that spilled on her satin dressing room stool. [Vesta laughed as she told this.] "God-dammit, Vesta. Don't you have any sense? What the hell are' you doing?" I said, "I'm so sorry. I didn't know it had water in it." She said, "It doesn't matter; that thing needs to be recovered anyway." That's the type of person she was. She would apologize wanted to play jacks on the floor in her $180 white slacks that belonged to the studio. Lorna, Liza, Judy and I played jacks. She crawled all over that floor and asked me the next morning, "What happened to my knees?" The studio told me, "Please don't let her crawl on the floor in our clothes." This was a fantastic experience for me. She was a very lovely gal. Everytime The Wizard of Oz came on, it was a family affair. We would all sit around the television and watch it. Judy's face would light up; she would clap her hands and say, "Look at me, look at me!" She loved that movie. Liza would sit there saying, "I can't believe I'm watching this again!" Judy never heard her say that, though. immediately. She always did. She was under constant pressure. Did she always treat you well? Don't think she talked nice to me all the time. She did not. The first boo-boo TWT JUNE 3 • 9. 1983 What did she usually do at night? She had a date. She would go out. The studio usually told her who to go out with. There were some guys she had to go out with that she really disliked. One escort she especially liked was this gay guy who was really concerned and considerate of her. One day, he brought some jewelry to the house and told Ms. Garland it was for his wife. After he left, she said, "Vesta, dahling," she never once said "Vesta," it was always "Vesta, dahling." "Vesta, dahling, you know his wife is a man." Did the studio try to manipulate you along with her? Yes, all the time. One day, she wasn't feeling well, and I had locked the door to her trailer. They didn't like this at all; PAGE 45 it was costing them money. The phone rang and it was the secretary to the producer. She said, "Don't tell Ms. Garland who this is, but can't you do something to get her out of there?" Judy was sitting two feet away, and I said, "Look, when Ms. Garland feels well enough to come out, she'll let you know." I didn't get close to any of those people. My loyalty was to Judy Garland, and to her only. Did you expect Liza Minnelli to be the star she is today? When I was there, Lorna was 10, Joey was 8 and Liza was 17. I used to hear Lorna singing around the house, and I thought, "She's going to be the one." Lorna was maybe a little jealous of Liza, but she really loved her mother. Lorna used to say to me-this is age ten, mind you-"Please watch my mother; the same thing might happen to her that happened to Marilyn [Monroe). We can't let that happen to Mommy." Obviously, Liza is more of a showman than Lorna is, so she made it the biggest. Liza's a trooper like her mother was. Even when Judy's voice was gone, and her voice would crack, it didn't matter. She was Judy Garland. One morning, she called me to her bedroom and said, "Vesta, dahling, do you like me?" I said, "Ms. Garland, I adore you." She said, "I never have people say that to me and really mean it." It might not have been the truth; I don't know. She was a qood actress. But I wasn't an actress, and she knew it. I really do think she trusted me. When she gave me her phone book that had every movies star's number in it imaginable, she said, "Now, you're not going to copy this like my last secretary did, are you?" It was hard for her to trust people. Who were some of the guests Judy had on her show while you worked for her? Some of them were Ethel Merman] Jack Jones; she didn't like Ethel. This is what I'm talking about. The producers told her who to have on the show. When Ethel was on the show, Judy sent her one red rose with no vase to her dressing room. Ms. Garland sent her choreographer an elaborate arrangement. I've never heard two people try to outscream each other like that before. It was hilarious. i _"J§ Judy with Mickey Rooney. PAGE 46 At the Coconut Grove, 1958. TLUT JUNE 3 - 9, 1983 Arriving in Sydney, Australia, 1964. Did Judy ever try to keep her children out of show business? Not really, but she certainly didn't push them into it. When Liza was leaving for New York, Judy said, "Vesta, dahling, I have seen that girl off so many times. Would you see her off tonight?" I told Liza what I was going to do, and she said, "Oh, Vesta, my boyfriend's taking me; you can't go with me." I said, "Okay. You had better not ever let Judy know I didn't go with you." Well, Judy had a date and was leaving earlier. She left, and Liza had her bags packed. Here's me and Liza starting out the door to her limousine, when suddenly, Judy's limousine pulls up; she had forgotten something. Liza was backing up, pushing with those bags, and we got back to her bedroom real quick and hid. The next day, Ms. Garland asked, "Did you get Liza to the airport all right?" I said, "Everything Wasjust fine. No problems." Ididn't like lYing to her. Liza was a wonderful girl. She has made it on her own. She never Used her mother's name. Deans) wouldn't let her. She was hurt deeply. Then Sid Luft had that auction of Judy's things after she died. Liza definitely didn't want that to happen. She did not want her mother exploited. Regardless of what you read, these people have feelings. How did you leave your job with Judy? The reason I left-I was not fired; I was not mad at her-her agents had not told her my circumstances. I had the house in Dallas. They told me they would pay my way back. They said they would pay my expenses to bring my car back and get my own apartment in HOllywood. They hadn't told her a thing. This was typical of agents. She wouldn't talk to me when I tried to bring up leaving. She would not discuss it. I couldn't get to her. I had to leave. I could have gone back, but I decided it was best not to. I was due to go with her to Australia. That was a fiasco. She couldn't appear when she got there. She got sick. Her sickness was .. you know what her sickness was. I'm not going to say it. She was a wonderful, wonderful person who was a victim of circumstance. "It is dangerous because it gives political clout to the associations [Neartown and Avondale) that have contested the licenses and renewals of every bar on lower Westheimer," Ray Hill told TWT. These two associations are the centerpiece for bringing pressure on city council to draft an SOB ordinance, which was completed last week. The draft represented seven months of discussions by committee members, research by committee staff, hearings soliciting the views of interested citizens, and consultations with representatives of the City Legal Department. Although the committee believes that the draft represents a successful attempt to regulate, not to prohibit, there are those who feel the ordinance is unacceptable and needs revision. "The legal costs foisted upon adult bookstores by the necessity to comply with or combat this ordinance may indeed serve to prohibit, rather than merely regulate, adult bookstores," one owner stated. Another owner told TWT that he might as well turn the keys of his bookstore over to the vice squad adding, "at very best, it places our fates in the hands of zealots in the vice squad and DA offices." The ordinance calls for a director to decide who gets a permit and who does not. "Have you thought about the stupendous amount of power being placed in the hands of this director? What if she/he is somewhat susceptible to the pressures of anti-pornography groups? That would place the future of a businessperson's investment at the whim TWT JUNE 3 . 9. 1983 . of a single individual's waffling character," it was noted. The director could become a "sex czar," one'told TWT. The new draft, as anticipated by TWT, requires that no two such businesses be within less than 1,000 feet of each other to prevent clustering. It also requires that no SOB be within the narrower range of 750 feet from a church or school. Regarding the distance between businesses proposed in the ordinance, legal confl ict arises over the fact that Houston has no zoning laws. "Zoning under any other name is still egregious in Houston," a complainant stated. The draft also establishes a mechanism to forbid location of SOBs in predominantly residential areas, and requires all to be painted on the outside in an achromatic color. Signage is also addressed. A primary sign cannot contain any flashing lights, must be rectangular, not to exceed 75 square feet in area, and not exceed ten feet in height. All signs will be able to contain only one of the following phrases: Adult Book Store, Adult Motion Picture Theatre, Adult Encounter Parlor, Adult Cabaret, Adult Novelties, and Adult Entertainment. SOBs would be permitted only one secondary sign, which would have to be affixed or attached to any wall or door of the enterprise. The proposed new ordinance proposes that all SOBs come into conformity within six months after the date of its passage. TWT has learned that several area bookstores have joined forces to work dilligently and noisily to see that every judicial remedy is explored to throw the SOB ordinance out if it cannot be amended significantly.
