NRW: Digital powerhouse and
industrial strength
For North Rhine-Westphalia, SXSW Interactive is once
again the place to be in March 2016. Our large and diverse
delegation is traveling to Austin to identify new trends,
listen to the interesting speakers and follow the current
discussions in the industry.
This year the NRW delegation reflects the diversity of
the companies in the media and creative sector: Large
and small companies, established industry giants as well
as young startups are making the trip. TV stations, pro
duction companies and internet companies will provide
a productive mix. This also shows that the media and
creative industries form an important lead market in
NRW. Large TV corporations, many film producers,
publishers, designers, games studios and a lively startup scene benefit from the favorable location conditions.
As a region which is home to major media companies, a
diverse newspaper and book publishing landscape, with
a strong advertising market and numerous important
trade fair formats such as gamescom or dmexco, NRW
is also an excellent partner for foreign companies.
The deciding competitive advantage for companies in
the creative and media industries in NRW is the proximity
to their industrial partners. North Rhine-Westphalia is
regarded as Germany’s industrial core. 16 of the 50 highestgrossing German companies have their headquarters in
NRW. These are the clients of advertisers, film-makers,
music producers and designers. Both sides benefit, and
create added value, made in North Rhine-Westphalia.
This year, we will also be presenting some great ideas
from NRW at the German Haus and in the Trade Show.
You are warmly invited to come and learn about NRW
and its strengths.

Welcome to Cologne –
The Digital Capital of Germany!
Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany and as
part of the Rhine-Ruhr region also the biggest city in the
State NRW, which has approx. 18 million inhabitants.
With its strong companies, University of Excellence,
the University of Applied Sciences and the Academy of
MediaArts, embedded into an outstanding educational
region, Cologne is not only an expanding city but also a
magnet for young people. Today 25 % of the residents
are between 18 and 35 years old.
At the same time Cologne has developed into one of the
most exciting sites for digital business, games, interactive
entertainment and e-commerce. There are important
events taking place, i. e. international leading trade fairs
and conferences like the gamescom, the greatest fair
for interactive games or the dmexco, Europe’s leading
conference for digital trading and e-commerce and also
events like the Pirate Summit, StartupCon, internet
week or the digital education days.
Cologne is one of the most important locations for the
internet and media business. Two of Germany’s largest
TV stations, WDR and the RTL Group, are located in
Cologne. Several hundred production companies and
service providers ensure that more than 30 % of the
GermanTV program is produced here.
The collaboration with international startup eco-systems
as well as the extension into an international innovation
hub will be intensified by the staff section media and inter
net business. Visit us at the NRW booth at the German
Haus!
Yours sincerely
With the best extended fiber glass network in Europe and
the highest broadband supply in Germany, Cologne is
well prepared for future developments like VOD and the
digitalization of the entertainment-, media- and internet
industry.

Amazing Dortmund –
One City Great Opportunities
Dortmund continues to activate the strengths of its
creativeclass because studies reveal that creative,
well-educated people are the key to success among the
global competition between communities. This applies
to companies and cities but above all to the people who
live here. The creative class ensures the liveliness and
diversityof a city and helps to achieve a tolerant urban
community. And it gives important economic impetus
towardsgrowth.
Dortmund provides its creative class with the right
space in the right place. Today new ideas are already
beingdeveloped as the next creative generation is being
educated in Dortmund’s think-tanks, universities, institutes and at the TechnologieZentrumDortmund. And
Dortmund has the space and initiatives to develop these
ideas to maturity and to transform them into opportu
nities and products. One example of this is our creative
landmark, the Dortmund U, where creativity and the
visual arts come face to face. Interdisciplinary exchange
like this offers great potential for our future. That is
why the City and the cultural, business and scientific
communities continue working together to support
and promote these resources.
I am very pleased that the City of Dortmund is a partner
of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia this year
and I wish all participants a successful SXSW 2016!

Welcome to Germany’s Digital Powerhouse
North Rhine-Westphalia,
City of Cologne & City of Dortmund
Welcome to NRW, one of the most economically powerful
metropolitan regions in Germany and Europe. With over
24,000 companies in the media and communications
sector, more than 412,000 employees, and a turnover of
almost 122 billion Euros, the federal state has developed
into the leading media and creative hub. No federal state
brings more companies and employees together across
the whole gamut of media formats. Whether it is games,
film, television, design and advertising, mobile, IT or
publishing. NRW has evolved as the Number One centre
of the media and creative industries.
Cologne is one of the leading digital capitals in Germany
with its high creative atmosphere and an outstanding
locationfor global events such as gamescom, dmexco, ART
COLOGNE, c/o pop, Cologne Conference or lit.cologne.
Two of the biggest broadcasters, WDR and the RTL Group,
are located in Cologne. Several hundred production
companiesand service providers ensure that over 30 %
of the programs viewed on German television originate
in Cologne.
Dortmund, once a former “steel city”, is now a modern
and cosmopolitan metropolis, acquiring renown all
across Europe as an innovative location for technological
and creative development with key projects like the
Dortmunder U or the Konzerthaus. The city is constantly
working on the expansion of networks, creative businesses, fostering an invigorating startup climate and the
professionalization of entrepreneurship in the creative
sector.

Among Europe’s metropolitan regions, North RhineWestphalia has one of the most powerful economies. The
state is also a national leader. North Rhine-Westphalia is
Germany’s No. 1 industrial region. Our livelihood depends
on industry. Industry sustains and drives forward research,
growth and wealth in our state. Of Germany’s top 100
corporations, 37 are based in North Rhine-Westphalia.
We are home to the global players. At the same time,
NRW is not only the home of large companies; it also
hosts a significant small and medium business sector.
70.8 % of the region’s economic output is generated by
service providers. 6,6 million people work in this sector.
The industry-related service providers play a particularly
important role. 27.5 percent of the sales generated in the
narrower sense by industry-related service providers
in Germany come from NRW. If you think you can only
become a market leader if you are based in New York or
Tokyo, come to North Rhine-Westphalia and think again.
Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany and the
largest city in NRW as part of the Rhine-Ruhr region with
more than 10 million inhabitants. The Cologne Cathedral
is a world cultural heritage site and an attraction for
touristsfrom around the world.

Like almost no other German city, Dortmund has seen
enormous change in recent years. The former “steel city”
developed into a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis,
acquiring renown all across Europe as an innovative
locationfor technological and creative development.
The Cologne Chamber of Commerce and Industry currently
represents the interests of around 150,000 member
companies. The CCI Cologne bundles the interests of
commerce and industry and speaks on their behalf whenever their interests need to be represented in dealings
with political or administrative bodies. It is a corporation
governed by public law, service partner of companies,
supports company development with a diverse range of
services, provides advice in times of crisis or mediates
in question of company succession.
But the biggest city in the Ruhr Valley also scores with
a wide range of possibilities in the cultural and sporting
sector, with extensive greens and a high quality of life.
Counting nearly 600,000 inhabitants, the city alongside
the ancient German trading route (the “Hellweg”) is one
of the biggest cities of the Federal Republic of Germany
and the economic and cultural centre of Westphalia.
For startups the CCI Cologne offers a huge range of
services: support in creating your business model or
business plan, advice on how to cope with loan and other
support programs, information on venture capital and
crowdfunding, consulting in questions of growth or
how to go international ... Your startup matters are
our business!

Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) is the German state
of North Rhine-Westphalia’s public broadcaster. Based
on the number of employees, it is the largest media
organisation in Germany and the second largest in Europe,
after the BBC. It is a member of ARD and produces
approximately a quarter of the nationwide network’s
programming: “Das Erste”, Channel 1, is the country’s
primary and longest-running German TV program.
Founded in 1956, WDR is obligated to serve the public
interest, independent of government control and the
influenceof private interest groups. It promotes social
integration and cultural diversity in Germany and Europe.
As the primary information medium for the population
in Germany’s western-most state, WDR focusses both
on events in the region and the world. In this manner,
WDR’s radio, television and Internet platforms reach
86 % of the population in NRW every week.

For hundred of years watches have been more than only
a decorative piece of jewelry with a certain emotional
value, in particular when it was a present or an heirloom,
a “status symbol” or an object bought for a considerable
amount of money. Smartwatches come with extended
functionalities and benefits as applications are increasing,
but won‘t ever be able to replace the classic timepieces.
The Wotch E-Strap is a breakthrough product, combining
the functionality of a smartwatch and fitness tracker,
whereby the consumer does not have to replace his existing
watch. Watch lovers no longer have to choose between
the beauty of a Swiss Watch and the digital functionality
of a smartwatch.
Wotch is the first company to launch a high quality jewelry
grade E-Strap for watch fans and the watch distribution
channels. 2 years of development have been invested to
find the right balance between digital technology and
traditionalwatch making.

ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) is a public-service
German television broadcaster based in Mainz (Frankfurt
area). It is run as an independent non-profit institution,
which was founded by the German federal states in 1963.
In 2015 ZDF was Germany’s #1 network.
Among the ZDF channels ZDFneo is a young and independent brand, serving as a platform for innovation and
for the development of new formats, talents and genres.
ZDFneo is targeting 25 to 49-year-olds and strives to
make information and entertainment – two traditional
hallmarks of ZDF programming – more accessible to
younger audiences. ZDFneo approaches topics from new
and unusual perspectives, and often experiments with new
ways of storytelling across different media. The online
presence of ZDFneo is designed to work as a platform
both for on-demand content and for the exchange of
opinion with users.

At the age of twelve Benjamin Rose signed his first record contract with

Both producers of COMA are more ardent perfectionists than
hyped-up egomaniacs. But Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad found their
own way to break down the barriers between club culture and live concerts, they win over the audience almost immediately with pop-infused
electronics including laptops, guitars, synthesizers and microphones.

Eventually STABIL ELITE was founded, when their own desire for a still
unexplored pop hybrid grew too strong and had to become a reality. In
addition the German lyrics’ meaning is only revealed when not looking
for it: Melodic, scenic descriptions of abstract imagery, which embrace
pop from an avantgarde perspective – more Dada than Gaga.
