Ponderosa ANCHOR w w w. l a k e p o n d e r o s a . o r g November / December 2009 PRESIDENTS CORNER “Our Lake Roads” We all know the roads could be better than they are presently. All the heavy rains we have had the last two years have made them significantly worse. There are deep washouts along the side of the roads in many places, which have become quite dangerous. Potholes never go away, and we are getting significant soil runoff into the lake whenever we get a steady rain, which seems to be every few days lately. With all of that said, there is no easy, inexpensive answer. We can all keep complaining about the way the roads have been, or we can start to look forward for solutions to the problem. The Lake Ponderosa Association board is willing to meet with the Ahrenses to discuss possible solutions. What I am asking of each of you is to share with us your thoughts as to what you would like to see done. Obviously, some solutions are much more expensive than others, and price will be one of the determining factors. Culverts and ditches will also need to be part of any solution. Our water lines will need to be taken into consideration as well. Any type of hard-surface solution will require different winter road cleaning than presently done. The issues of speed on the roads and youthful operators of golf carts and ATVs will only become more serious with smoother roads. As property owners, we would all be assessed for the cost of any major road improvement project. The current road fees would obviously never pay for a project of this magnitude, nor would they go away. Please share your thoughts/suggestions with us by emailing us at lpa@zumatel.net or by mailing them to P.O. Box 751, Montezuma, IA 50171. I am personally asking that your comments be forward-looking not back. We don’t need history as much as we need to find a solution that is acceptable to most of us here at the lake. We would also like to know whom we are hearing from so we may follow up with you if necessary. This problem will not be resolved overnight, but it is time that we start serious discussions about what needs to be done for the sake of our safety and our property values. I am thanking you in advance for your thoughtful, serious replies to my request. I will keep you apprised of our feedback and progress. We would like to mention a few items that are worth considering this time of year. Protecting Your Property Most of you with summer homes have been busy closing up your properties for the winter. There are many precautions that should be taken to ensure your property is well-protected during the cold months ahead: • Make sure all exposed water pipes, etc. are properly insulated with heat tape or insulation – check with a local plumber for help or call Ponderosa Supply for suggestions – 641-623-3013 • Remove any hydrant water meters to prevent them from freezing • If possible, ask a neighbor or a friend to help keep an eye on things while you’re away Ice Fishing We’re not there yet, but ice fishing will be coming up soon. Last year a few lot owners volunteered their time to help “patrol” the fishermen on the lake. According to their reports, most people fishing on the lake were actually lot owners, which is what we’re striving for. Fortunately, these same lot owners will be volunteering again this year. Please keep the following in mind when heading out to fish this winter: • Use the boat ramp to access the lake with your vehicles – not the office’s yard, nor your neighbors • Pick up after yourself – please don’t throw trash on the ice • Make a note of the fishing limits – check with the Iowa DNR’s website for more information It has been suggested that ice shacks be registered with the office so that we can make sure only lot owners and their family and/or guests are fishing. We are considering the same sort of sticker system used for watercraft and land craft during the summer – if you have any thoughts on this idea please email me at bjahrens@zumatel.net. We’re looking for positive suggestions to further protect the lake and the community. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Ice Safety should be the #1 thought on everyone’s mind, to avoid a disaster! Iowa’s first ice signals the start of the ice fishing season. Communities of shacks, shanties, and fivegallon buckets will sprout up all over Iowa’s lakes and ponds. Winter’s first freeze-over does not mean the ice is safe for recreation. It takes prolonged freezing temperatures to produce solid ice, and even then, some ice may still not be safe. Anglers need to be cautious when out on any ice, but even more so during early and late ice. Those who venture out onto frozen waters should recognize the types and characteristics of ice, and the maximum load capacity of each. Many factors affect the strength and thickness of ice. Slush ice, for example, is half as strong as clear, blue ice. Slush shows weakening of the ice and should be considered a danger sign. Clear, blue river ice is 15 percent weaker than pond or lake ice. New ice is usually stronger than old ice because the bond between the ice crystals decay with age. Dark or honeycombed ice indicates deterioration and should be avoided. Even if the cold snap halts the deterioration process, dark or honeycombed ice will never refreeze to its original strength. Light winds accelerate formation of ice, while strong winds force water from beneath the ice and can decay the edges. Snow can insulate ice and keep it strong. It can also insulate it to keep it from freezing, or hide cracked, weak or open-water areas. Areas covered by snow should be approached cautiously. Continuous travel over the same area of ice will also weaken it. Lakes with moving water, whether it be from an inlet canal, springs, groundwater seepage or an outlet, should be viewed with skepticism. Water movement, no matter how light, retards freezing and can leave hard-to-detect thin spots. continued on page 7 VW Docks Offer: Floating Docks • Cedar Sectional Docks Aluminum Sectional Docks • Steel Sectional Docks Roll-In Docks • Float Drums • Benches Boat Cushions • PWC Lifts • Ladders Post Caps • Boat Lifts • Swim Rafts Jim Frein 16004 Boston Parkway, Clive, Iowa 50325 Phone: 515-987-2827 Email: jjfrein@q.com Website: www.vwdocks.com w w w. l a k e p o n d e r o s a . o r g Page 7 For all your Real Estate needs Around The Lake Connie Durr, Broker — 641-891-3973 or 623-2700 Lake Ponderosa Associate Service Oriented - Prompt - Professional Serving All of Poweshiek County web page: patriotbankia.com e-mail: cdurr@zumatel.net Member of the Poweshiek Co. According to ice strength figures compiled by the Lumbermen’s Safety Association and other sources, 3 inches of clear, blue ice will support one person walking. General use such as ice fishing or skiing requires at least 4 inches of good ice, 5 inches for snowmobiling. At least 8-12 inches of solid ice is needed to support a car or light truck, while 12-15 inches is the minimum thickness for medium trucks. Never assume ice is safe and always test thickness with an auger or spud bar before going out. This information was obtain from the Iowa DNR Website at http://www.iowadnr.com/law/boating/ PACKING UP THE CHRISTMAS TREE There is no better time to get ready for the next holiday season than when it’s time to take down your Christmas tree. Take the time to systematically inspect your tree for burned out light bulbs, damaged wiring, or broken connectors. Leave the lights turned on as you begin removing the top section of the tree and check the lights. Doing this could save you considerable time putting your tree back up and getting ready next season. Replacement mini lights are easiest to find at the very beginning of the season, long before anyone puts their tree up. By knowing ahead of time that you will need a handful of replacement mini lights, you can relax with the assurance that you will not shop too late. Once all the lights have been checked and the branches compressed you are ready to complete your Christmas tree storage. Christmas tree storage bags are available in standing, rolling, and hanging styles, and some bags even allow for fully assembled trees to be stored, completely decorated! w w w. l a k e p o n d e r o s a . o r g Page 8 2009 MEMBERS Ahrens Mrs. John Abolins Aija Agnew Dr. Robert & Judy Alexander Bill & Jane Alexander F. Plus we don’t have enough shallow cover to protect the new fish hatch. We don’t have much mid range or deep cover either. We need to put out lots of brush piles this winter. Here’s what I want to do. We need dozens and dozens of cedar trees. We also need 15 to 20 guys to cut the trees, store the trees, and help create brush piles to put on the ice in key locations. Anyone wanting to help with this needs to call or email me, Harry Meek at 515-681-9799 or cypest@zumatel.net. We also need lots of concrete blocks and ATVs to move them to the different locations. We need to get the trees cut before the snow gets too deep in the ditches, early December. Then get them out on the ice in February/March.
