On June12, 2016, the City of South El Monte and El Monte held
their first ever Viva SGV! Open Streets Car-Free event presented by
Metro. The free event which took place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm,
offered a 7.2 mile route through city streets and the Rio Hondo Bike
Path, which is part of the Emerald Necklace.
The Viva SGV! route had stops featuring entertainment stages,
food vendors, games, and more. South El Monte streets including a
small section of Santa Anita Avenue, Central Avenue and Rush
Street; and El Monte streets were completely closed to vehicular
traffic to allow the public to explore parks, businesses and neighborhoods while walking, jogging, biking, skating, and strolling. All
forms of non-motorized transit were welcome, including scooters,
bicycles, wheelchairs, skateboards, wagons, strollers, and roller
blades.
Mary Van Dyke Park, a designated activity hub in South El
Monte, featured live music and performances including the allfemale mariachi band Las Reinas de Los Angeles of Cielito Lindo
restaurant, local native Raymundo, Tha Dominion Boyz, and CSUN
Jishin Taiko. The South El Monte hub also included a Mural
Revival: Imaging South El Monte’s New Murals; a selfie station;
interactive art; storytelling; Zumba, Loteria hop scotch and other
amusing activities.
In addition to the fun events held at Mary Van Dyke, the hub
provided participants access to bicycle and pedestrian safety trainings, physical activities, children’s workshop, healthy food and beverage demos, health and wellness demos, giveaways, food trucks,
restrooms, bike repair and first aid.
Viva SGV! Open Streets event was funded by Los Angeles
County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Open Streets
Grant Program, which seeks to increase opportunities for walking,
biking, and public transit to help create a more mobile and sustainable transportation system in the Los Angeles region.

For the 27th consecutive year, the City of South El Monte and
Sheriff’s Temple Station hosted Deputy Day on June 2nd. The special
event held for elementary students of South El Monte provided an
opportunity for children to meet and foster positive relationships with
deputies, civilians, and volunteers who work for the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department and other public safety agencies. “Deputy Day is
about showing the children of our community, we are here to serve and
protect them,” said one deputy. “We do more than just write tickets and
make arrests; we work in partnership with the community to improve the
quality of life in the City.”
The inquisitive children enjoyed visiting the various entertaining and
informative interactive displays showcased at New Temple Park from
patrol vehicles, motorcycles, lifeguard boat, fire engine truck, to horses,
among other exhibits. These displays provided children an insight of
some of the tools used to keep them safe as well as career options in the
public safety field.
As a memento of this entertaining day, each child in attendance
received a free Deputy Day 2016 t-shirt and giveaways.
A special thanks to the following agencies for the their participation
at this year’s festivity: LA County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized
Units, LA County Fire Department, South El Monte Code Enforcement
and Public Safety divisions, Sierra Madre Search and Rescue, Army,
Marines, CERT, AMR Medical Response; and McGruff the Crime Dog
for his special appearance.

Top Five
Things You
Need to Know
About Zika
South El Monte may seem far from the Zika troubles, but the mosquito threat may be closer than you think.
Here are five things you need to know about this disease as a resident of South El Monte.
#5 The mosquitoes that can transmit Zika are in South El Monte. They’re called Aedes mosquitoes.
#4 You can identify these mosquitoes easily. Look for small, black mosquitoes with white stripes.
Also, the mosquitoes bite aggressively during the daytime.
#3 Currently, there are no outbreaks of Zika, dengue fever, chikungunya or yellow fever in L.A. County.
The only cases so far have been residents infected while traveling abroad and coming back home sick.
#2 You’re not alone in this fight. Vector control is monitoring and controlling populations of mosquitoes
in public areas such as parks, street gutters and rivers. Vector control ecologists collect mosquitoes
from traps and send the mosquitoes to test for diseases.
#1 Take control of your home, now! Get rid of the very thing they need to lay their eggs: Standing water.
You can find standing water in things like buckets, plant saucers, broken fountains and old tires.
Mosquito control is a shared responsibility. Vector control cannot do this alone. Join your neighbors
and fight back.
If you are still experiencing mosquito issues, you can contact the Greater Los Angeles County Vector
Control District at 562-944-9656 or www.ReportMosquitoes.org. Let’s work together to stop this Aedes infestation from spreading.
