13 Gorffennaf 2012 - Seremoni 8
Croeso
Mae’n bleser arbennig i’ch croesawu i’r
seremoni raddio hon. Mae’r wythnos
raddio yn un o uchafbwyntiau’r flwyddyn
academaidd i ni, ac yn adeg arbennig o
hapus a dathliadol ar gyfer pob prifysgol.
Estynnaf fy llongyfarchiadau cynhesaf i’r
rheiny sy’n cwblhau eu cyrsiau gyda ni; a
diolch ar ran y Brifysgol i bob un ohonoch
sydd wedi cefnogi ein graddedigion yn
ystod eu hamser yma.
Wrth raddio, mae hi’n naturiol i edrych yn ôl
ac ymlaen: yn ôl i’r adegau yr ydych chi a’ch
ffrindiau wedi’u rhannu yma yn fyfyrwyr, ac
ymlaen i’r camau nesaf sydd o’ch blaen fel
graddedigion. Yn yr un modd, mae Prifysgol
Aberystwyth yn cydnabod ac yn dathlu ei
hanes ac yn falch ohono, ond yn cynllunio’n
hyderus ac yn benderfynol i’r dyfodol yn
ogystal. Sefydlwyd Aberystwyth yn 1872,
a’i hariannu drwy arian mân glowyr wnaeth
sylweddoli manteision prifysgol, ac addysg
prifysgol. Mae gennym berthynas gref
â’r gymuned o hyd, ac rwy’n siŵr y bydd
y rheiny yn eich plith sydd wedi astudio
yma neu sydd wedi ymweld o’r blaen
yn ymwybodol o’r berthynas gyfeillgar
a manteisiol i’r ddwy ochr sy’n bodoli
rhwng ein prifysgol a’r dref. Er hynny, mae
cymuned ein prifysgol bellach yn gymuned
fyd-eang, gyda myfyrwyr a staff o fwy na
100 o wledydd. Yn y blynyddoedd sydd i
ddod, ein nod yw cynyddu’r nifer o fyfyrwyr
uwchraddedig a rhyngwladol ymhellach,
gan barhau i adeiladu, datblygu a sicrhau
ein gwaith dysgu, profiad ein myfyrwyr a’n
hymchwil rhagorol.
Mae Prifysgol Aberystwyth yn gymuned a
unir drwy ein harwyddair – ‘Nid byd, byd
heb wybodaeth’. Fel myfyrwyr, fe fuoch chi
yn rhan hanfodol o’r gymuned hon; ac fel
graddedigion, mi fyddwch yn parhau i fod.
Rydym yn dymuno aros mewn cysylltiad
ag alumni; byddwn yn rhoi gwybod i chi
am y genhedlaeth nesaf o gynlluniau ac
uchelgeisiau ar gyfer eich Prifysgol; a bydd
croeso bob amser ichi ddod yn ôl i’n gweld
ni, boed hynny yn rhan o weithgaredd sydd
wedi’i drefnu megis penwythnos blynyddol
‘Cic Arall i’r Bar’, neu ar ymweliad personol.
Nod y Brifysgol yw llwyddo er mwyn
Aberystwyth, er mwyn Cymru, ac er mwyn
y byd: ewch chi gyda’n dymuniadau gorau,
wrth ichi raddio a symud ymlaen i wneud yr
un peth.
Diolch am fod gyda ni heddiw. Ar ran pob
un o’m cydweithwyr yma yn Aberystwyth,
dymunaf ddiwrnod graddio arbennig i chi, a
phob llwyddiant i’r dyfodol.
April McMahon
Is-Ganghellor / Vice-Chancellor
13 July 2012 - Ceremony 8
Welcome
It is a great pleasure to be able to welcome
you to this graduation ceremony. Graduation
week is one of the highlights of our
academic year, and an exceptionally happy
and celebratory time for any university. My
warmest congratulations go to those who
are completing their courses with us; and
I send the University’s thanks to all of you
who have supported our graduands during
their time here.
At graduation it is natural to look both back
and forward: back to the times you have
shared with friends here as students, and
forward to the next steps that lie ahead
of you as graduates. In the same way,
Aberystwyth University recognises and
celebrates its proud history, but is planning
confidently and resolutely for the future.
Aberystwyth was founded in 1872, and
funded by pennies given by coal miners who
recognised the benefits that a university,
and a university education, could bring.
We still share a strong bond with our
community, and I am sure that those of
you who have studied here or visited
before will be aware of the friendly and
mutually beneficial relationship between
our university and our town. However,
our university community now is a global
one, with students and staff from over 100
countries. In the coming years, we aim to
increase our number of postgraduate and
international students further, while still
building on, improving and assuring our
outstanding teaching, student experience
and research.
Aberystwyth University is a community
united by our motto – ‘A world without
knowledge is no world at all’. As students,
you have been a crucial part of this
community; and as graduates, you still
will be. We want to stay in touch with our
alumni; we will keep you informed of the
next generation of plans and ambitions for
your University; and you are always welcome
to come back to see us, whether as part of
an organised event like the ‘Bar Kicks Back’
annual weekend, or on a personal visit. The
University aims to succeed for Aberystwyth,
for Wales, and for the world: you go with
our good wishes, as you graduate and move
forward to do likewise.
Thank you for being with us today. On behalf
of all my colleagues here at Aberystwyth, I
wish you a wonderful graduation day, and
every success in the future.

Prifysgol Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth, a sefydlwyd ym 1872, yw
prifysgol hynaf Cymru. Am nifer o flynyddoedd,
canolfan y dysgu a’r addysgu oedd adeilad
eiconig yr Hen Goleg ar lan y môr. Heddiw,
mae myfyrwyr yn elwa o amrywiaeth eang
o adnoddau ar draws pedwar campws, sef
Penglais, Gogerddan, Llanbadarn, a’r Hen
Goleg, sy’n dal i sefyll yn falch ger y lli. Gyda’r
Llyfrgell Genedlaethol ar ein trothwy, rydyn
ni’n ddigon ffodus i gael y gymhareb uchaf o
lyfrau o’i gymharu â phobl yn unman yn y byd!
Mae rhagoriaeth y dysgu a’r addysgu a’r safle
godidog ar lannau Bae Ceredigion yn ddau o
blith y llu rhesymau pam y mae’r Brifysgol yn
gwneud mor dda mewn arolygon annibynnol
ar fodlonrwydd myfyrwyr.
Aeth y gwaith o ddatblygu ein hamgylchedd
eithriadol yn ei flaen eleni ac agorwyd
adnoddau addysgu ac ymchwil newydd
i Sefydliad y Gwyddorau Biolegol,
Amgylcheddol a Gwledig ar gampws
Penglais a’r Ganolfan Ffenomeg Planhigion
Genedlaethol yng Ngogerddan.
Y mae gan Brifysgol Aberystwyth hanes
academaidd cyfoethog ac y mae wedi cadw
ei lle yn y rheng flaen ym myd addysg; y
gyntaf yn y byd i gynnig cyrsiau mewn
Gwleidyddiaeth Ryngwladol, Astudiaethau
Strategol, Cymraeg ac Amaethyddiaeth.
Mae’r ysfa hon i arloesi wedi para ar hyd y
blynyddoedd a’r canlyniad diweddaraf yw nifer
o raglenni gradd Meistr rhyngddisgyblaethol
newydd, sy’n cynnwys y cwrs MSc, Sicrwydd
Bwyd a Dŵr. Ar ben hyn gall myfyrwyr
sy’n dymuno parhau i astudio fanteisio ar
ostyngiad cystadleuol iawn i raddedigion ar
gyrsiau a gynigir yn Aberystwyth.
Mae’r Brifysgol yn trysori ei threftadaeth
Gymreig ac mae datblygu addysgu trwy
gyfrwng y Gymraeg yn elfen hanfodol ar gyfer
hyrwyddo a chyfrannu at ddiwylliant Cymru a’r
iaith Gymraeg. Yn yr un modd, mae’r Brifysgol
yn falch i groesawu myfyrwyr o bob cwr o’r
byd. Mae’r amrywiaeth hwn yng nghymuned
y myfyrwyr yn cyfoethogi’r hyn sydd eisoes yn
brofiad addysgol a chymdeithasol rhagorol.
Caiff y seremonïau gradd eu cynnal yng
Nghanolfan y Celfyddydau, sydd yn adnodd
a chyfleuster gwych, nid yn unig i’r myfyrwyr,
ond i’r gymuned leol hefyd. Mae’r Ganolfan yn
ymfalchïo yn ehangder yr arddangosfeydd a’r
perfformiadau byw a gynhelir yno trwy gydol
y flwyddyn, yn theatr, cerddoriaeth, comedi
a dawns.

Aberystwyth University
Established in 1872, Aberystwyth is the
oldest university in Wales. For many years,
teaching and research centred around the
iconic Old College located on the seafront.
Today, students benefit from a wide
variety of teaching and learning facilities
spread over the four campuses of Penglais,
Gogerddan, Llanbadarn and the Old College
which continues to stand proudly on the
seafront. With the National Library of Wales
on our doorstep, we’re fortunate to have the
highest ratio of books to people anywhere
in the world! The excellent teaching and the
wonderful location on Cardigan Bay, are just
two of the reasons why the University does
so well in independent surveys of student
satisfaction.
Improvements to maintain our world class
environment have continued this year with
the newly opened Institute of Biological,
Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS)
teaching and research facilities on Penglais
and the National Plant Phenomics Centre
in Gogerddan.
Aberystwyth University has a rich academic
history and has remained at the forefront
of higher education, being the first to offer
courses in International Politics, Strategic
Studies, Welsh and Agriculture. This drive
has continued down the years and resulted
recently in a number of new inter-disciplinary
masters programmes including the new MSc
in Food and Water Security. Additionally,
graduates who wish to pursue further study
benefit from a highly competitive graduate
discount on postgraduate courses offered
at Aberystwyth.
The University strongly embraces its Welsh
heritage with the development of Welshmedium teaching as an essential element
to promote and enhance Welsh culture and
the Welsh language. At the same time, the
University is proud to welcome international
students from all over the world. This
diversity within the student community
greatly enhances and enriches the already
excellent learning and social experience.
Each year, the degree ceremonies are held
in the Arts Centre which is a fantastic facility
and resource, not only for students, but the
local community as well. The largest centre
of its kind in Wales, it boasts a wide range of
exhibitions and live performances of theatre,
music comedy and dance throughout
the year.
