raduation is a memorable and worthy celebration of your hard earned success.
I hope you and your supporters have a wonderful day.
This year I am delighted that we are celebrating the achievements of
more students than ever before, and I warmly welcome each of you to the Aber alumni
community. In doing so, you are in excellent company. Many of our alumni are leaders in
their field, and their chosen careers take them to all corners of the globe. I encourage you
to follow in their footsteps, explore all that the world has to offer, take the opportunities
that arise, and like them, build upon your Aberystwyth University degree and the
stimulus of your activities here.
Thank you for choosing to study at our University. We have valued your contribution
to student life, and how you and your fellow students enriched our lives and experiences.
As you graduate, take with you what you have learnt during your studies and use your
knowledge and skills to make a difference in your future careers. We wish you every
success and contentment. In Aberystwyth, we will continue to develop this remarkable

News of individual students excelling academically is always welcome – not to
mention their notable achievements in sports, debating, entrepreneurial challenges
and numerous hours of community volunteering. Graduation sees the culmination of
all our students’ successes, and is an unbeatable occasion!
As we wave farewell to our graduands, we welcome our graduates to the alumni
community. Wherever you venture next, we want to keep in touch to learn what you are
doing. In return, we offer continuing support and advice, and invitations to Aberystwyth
University events, held around the world. Please remember there will always be a warm welcome for you at Aberystwyth.

Your guide to
Graduation
During the five days of Graduation, the University welcomes over 10,000 students
and supporters to Aberystwyth. It’s a fantastic time for all involved, but it’s
important that you know what’s available to you and when. Here is your quick
guide to Graduation, including details of where you can take five minutes out and
rest with a cup of tea and slice of cake!
What to expect?
On arrival, students should make their way to the
Round Theatre on the first floor of the Arts Centre to
register. During registration, students will be handed their
card with details of their seat number, together with any
guest tickets requested.
After registering, please make your way to the Parry
Williams building (Department of Theatre, Film and
Television Studies) to collect your robe. Depending on the
time, you may like to take your graduation photos before
the ceremony. Tempest Photography, the University’s
official Graduation Photographers, will be available from
8am to 6pm.
A rehearsal is held before each ceremony at 9.30am for
morning, and 1.30pm for afternoon ceremonies. During
the rehearsal, parents and supporters are welcome to relax
in one of the Arts Centre’s cafés, take a wander around one
of the galleries, or pop to the Students’ Union for a coffee.

All students should be in their seats at least 15
minutes before the ceremony, guests are welcome to
make their way to the seats in the gallery of the Great
Hall from 10.30am or 2.30pm depending on the time of
your ceremony.
A full programme of the ceremony, including the
names of today’s graduates and details of the procession
and musical interlude, can be found in the centre pages
of this booklet.
Following the ceremony, graduates are asked to
make their way to the La Scala steps to have their group
photograph before heading to the marquee behind the
Arts Centre for a celebratory glass of fizz or juice.
Please ensure that you return your gown to the Parry
Williams building, by your agreed time.

A veritable rainbow of gowns can be seen adorning our students and staff at Graduation. Each
University has its own style and the cap, gown and hood have a particular meaning which signifies
the level of the qualification obtained.
The members of staff on stage usually wear the gown which demonstrates the highest
qualification they hold. As the University attracts staff from all over the world, there’s a vast range
of gowns on show!
Aberystwyth University’s own gowns are based on a colour palette of green and red, with the
undergraduate and postgraduate gowns being black with varying hoods and the PhD being a deep
red coloured gown with green adornments. A small number of students began their studies when
Aberystwyth was part of the University of Wales and therefore wear the gowns from this period.

Welcoming new
Fellows
Every year, during Graduation week, the University honours individuals who have
made a significant contribution to the University, to Aberystwyth or to Wales by
admitting them to a Fellowship of the University.
This year, we are pleased to present the following individuals for a Fellowship of Aberystwyth University:
Jeremy Bowen
Professor Bonnie Buntain
Jeremy is a prominent Welsh journalist
and television presenter. Born in Cardiff,
and a graduate of UCL and John Hopkins
University, he joined the BBC in 1984. A war
correspondent for much of his career, he
became the BBC’s Middle East correspondent
in 1995 and was based in Jerusalem until
2000. Since 2005 he has been the BBC’s
Middle East Editor and has reported from
more than 70 countries, often in the line of
fire. While reporting from Kosovo in 1999
he was robbed at gunpoint by bandits.
In July 2013, while reporting from the
BBC the protests in Egypt, he was shot in
the head. He was recently one of the few
journalists inside Syria reporting on the crisis.

Professor Buntain is the Assistant Dean
Professor of Public Health at the University of
Calgary in Canada. Prior to joining the Faculty,
Professor Buntain was the Chief Public Health
Veterinarian at the Food Safety and Inspection
Service for the US Department of Agriculture.
At the USDA, Professor Buntain advised the
Office of Field Operations on all veterinary issues
regarding food safety, humane slaughter and
handling and optimizing the use, retention and
recruitment of public health veterinarians.
Professor Buntain received her Bachelor of
Science and Masters of Science in Animal Science
from the University of Hawaii and obtained her
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1977 from
Colorado State University.
Rhod Gilbert
The son of two Aber alumi, Rhod Gilbert
is best known for his comedy genius. A former
market researcher, his comedy career began
in 2002. In the first 18 months of his career he
was the first person in the UK to reach the finals
of every major new talent competition and
succeeded in scooping four awards. In 2005, he
was nominated for the Perrier Best Newcomer
Awards and in 2008 was nominated for the main
if.comedy award.
In 2010, Rhod fronted the BBC series Rhod
Gilbert’s Work Experience that saw him turn
his hand to a variety of jobs. He has been a
regular contributor to a range of major comedy
shows and now hosts the BBC Radio Wales’
Rhod Gilbert Show every Saturday morning.

Professor John Harries
A renowned atmospheric physicist, Professor
John Harries led the team that produced the first
direct observational evidence of an increase in the
Earth’s greenhouse effect between 1970 and 1997.
He is a past President of the Royal Meteorological
Society, and of the International Radiation
Committee and previously a board member of
the Natural Environment Research Council.
Professor Harries was the first Chief Scientific
Adviser for Wales (2010-2013). An Emeritus
Professor and Distinguished Research Fellow at
Imperial College, he is also Fellow of the Institute
of Physics, the Royal Meteorological Society, the
American Geophysical Union and a member of
the American Meteorological Society.

Brian Jones
D. Geraint Lewis
A West Wales farmer and entrepreneur, Brian
Jones established Castell Howell Foods Ltd in the
mid 1980s and continues to lead the company
as its Managing Director.
Over the last 20 years, Castell Howell
has become firmly established as one of the
country’s leading independent food wholesalers
specialising in Welsh products and employing
400 staff.
Castell Howell is one of IBERS’ industrial
partners and supports the research and
development of improving food quality and
sustainable supply chains.
Brian is a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural
Society and currently President of the Welsh
Charitables RFC and Carmarthen Quins RFC.
D. Geraint Lewis was the Education and
Children’s Librarian for Dyfed before being
appointed Area Librarian for Ceredigion.
From1996 he was, until his retirement, the
Assistant Director of Education in charge of
Ceredigion’s Cultural Services. He has been the
Honorary Secretary of the Welsh Books Council
since 1986 and was the winner in 1996 of the Tir
na n-Og award for his dictionary Geiriadur Gomer yr
Ifanc. Originally from Ynys-y-bwl in Cwm Clydach,
he was educated at Aberystwyth University and
is the author of Geiriadur Cynradd Gomer, Y Llyfr
Berfau, Pa Arddodiad?, Y Treigladur, and Geiriau
Lletchwith.
Rhodri Meilir
The Cardiff-born venture capitalist and
philanthropist, Sir Michael Moritz is chairman of
Sequoia Capital in California’s Silicon Valley where
he has worked since 1986.
After studying history at Oxford University, he
moved to the US and worked for a while at Time
magazine before carving out a career as one of
Silicon Valley’s most sought-after investors.
He is a former member of the board of
directors of Google and his internet company
investments include Google, Yahoo!, PayPal,
Webvan, YouTube, eToys, and Zappos.
Sir Michael was appointed Knight Commander
of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2013
Birthday Honours for services to promoting British
economic interests and philanthropic work.
Welsh actor, Rhodri Meilir, graduated from
the Department of Theatre, Film and Television
Studies in 2000. Rhodri has appeared in a
number of popular television shows including
playing the role of Alfie Butts in the longrunning BBC sitcom, My Family, ITV’s Afterlife
and Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather on Sky One.
He has also featured in a number of films
including The Baker, Kevin Allen’s Y Syrcas
and appeared in the Doctor Who Christmas
Special The Runaway Bride. Later this year, he
will appear on cinema screens in Pathé Films’
new film Pride.
He is well known on Welsh television for
his roles in Y Pris, Caerdydd, Teulu, Tipyn o Stad
and as Rapsgaliwn. He received a Best Actor
BAFTA Cymru nomination in 2013 for his role
as Trefor in Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn. Rhodri is
currently part of the National Theatre of Wales’
highly acclaimed Mametz.
Dr John Sheehy
Emeritus Head of Applied Photosynthesis
and Systems Modelling Laboratory at the
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI),
Dr Sheehy is an alumnus of Aberystwyth
University. For most of his career, he has been
a scientist leading multidisciplinary teams in
the public sector specialising in the physiology
of crops, their yield and the environment.
He pioneered a ground-breaking research
program, assembling an international team
of scientists to kick start a new evolution
in rice and break the rice yield barrier by
supercharging photosynthesis. The initiative
was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation and, shortly after retiring, he was
honoured with an OBE.
Michael Moritz
Ed Thomas
Playwright, director and producer, Ed Thomas,
is founder member and creative director of TV
production company Fiction Factory.
He has written, directed or produced more
than 120 hours of award-winning drama across
all genres. His first play, House of America (1988)
won numerous awards both nationally and
internationally. His other plays include East From
the Gantry, Flowers of the Dead Red Sea, Song From
a Forgotten City, Gas Station Angel and Stone City
Blue.
He has also produced a number of drama
programmes for S4C including Caerdydd, Y Pris,
Pen Talar, Gwaith/Cartref, and most recently
Hinterland/Y Gwyll, a detective series produced
in Welsh and English for S4C, BBC and distributed
internationally by All3Media. Much of Hinterland
was filmed in and around the University and Ed
was instrumental in establishing a number of
placements for University students during its
filming.

Vice-Chancellor’s
Charity of the Year
Now in its third year, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year appeal
seeks to raise as much funding as possible for a worthy cause.
A
a number of occasions arise during the year, where fundraising for a local charity is possible,
the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year provides a focus for community fundraising and
charitable donations.
This year, nominations for the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity were sought from University students
and staff. The list of nominations – all worthy in themselves - was whittled down to a shortlist of
nine charities by the sabbatical team of the Students’ Union and the University Executive. Following
a week of voting and hundreds of votes cast, the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), was chosen as the charity for 2014/15.
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue
service in the UK and Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including Aberystwyth. Additionally the
RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist
flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding
puts lives at risk.
We look forward to working with the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the RNLI team during the
forthcoming year and invite you to learn more about their work by chatting to the charity’s

Culture, and External Engagement, Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan
to share his experience of Graduation...
My first Graduation
I
have an admission to make. This will be my first
official Aberystwyth University Graduation Ceremony.
Although I am a proud Aber alumnus – History, 1992
in case you were wondering – I did not attend the official
ceremony back then.
No, this wasn’t a massive blunder and I did not turn
up on the wrong day. Nor was I backpacking around the
globe hacking through jungles, working the bars on Bondi
Beach or getting a misspelt tattoo in Thailand. Instead,
I went to the “unofficial” ceremony organised by UMCA
(Aberystwyth’s Welsh-speaking Students’ Union). UMCA,
which celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year, was
in dispute with the University authorities at the time due
to its weak bilingual policy. I am glad to say that things
have progressed, the University now has a clear approach
to the equality of English and Welsh, and both UMCA and
the Students’ Union are fully engaged in representing the
students’ voices in the University Council meetings and
on various committees. The bilingual policy is the reason
you will hear a lot of Welsh used during the ceremonies
as well as on our University signage, documents and
correspondence. It is said that you know you’re in Wales
when you see “ARAF – SLOW” painted on the roads – as if
we needed any reminding!
Your son or daughter may well have studied part or all
of their degree with us through the medium of Welsh and
we are building on our provision in this respect across more
and more subject areas. Even if they did not undertake any
study in Welsh they may well have picked up some of the
language during their time here in Aberystwyth. We are
proud that this too is part of the Aber Experience since it
gives so many of our students exposure to cultural diversity
and this will stand them in good stead in the future.
But back to the ceremony and like many of our happy
new graduates my parents too will be attending their first
official Aberystwyth Graduation Ceremony. Despite their
moral guidance and financial support first-time round they
took my insistence that I would only attend the UMCA
ceremony very much in their stride and, thankfully, had a
thoroughly good time. On this occasion, however, they
will be in similar shoes to your good selves – a little bit
lost, a little trepidatious, and definitely proud and maybe
emotional. And as it is my first time – I will be too.

The ceremony begins with the reading of the Proclamation by
one of the graduating students. It recognises the achievements
and success of the graduating students, and expresses the hope
that they will contribute to knowledge and wellbeing for future
generations, and confront the challenges that face our world.

In each ceremony there will be candidates for initial
(undergraduate) and higher (postgraduate) degrees. Candidates
will be presented individually to the Vice-Chancellor. For each
degree the presenter will normally be the Head of the appropriate
Department. Candidates will be conducted to the stage by
Marshals where they will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor
and their names will be read out. After each group have returned
to their seats, the Vice-Chancellor will address the appropriate
formula to the whole group, and they will also receive a greeting
from the President or Vice-President.
