This Visitor Guide Presented by...
South Florida enjoys one of the world’s most unique
habitats. Two spectacular national parks offer natural
beauty, tranquility and teeming wildlife. The Everglades
and surrounding parks contain acres and acres of majestic
nature trails, as well as full-service marinas and campsites.
Fishing, boating, snorkeling and bird-watching are just a
few of the many nature-based activities for which the area
is known. In addition to natural pursuits, South Florida
offers a variety of shopping and dining options. Antique
malls, specialty shops, historic squares and outlet malls
are all part of the shopping scene, which is as varied as
the Everglades’ wildlife. Dining choices include family-style
restaurants, gourmet bistros and waterfront cafes.
Accommodations include hotels, guesthouses, historic inns
and campgrounds—all in a relaxed, tropical atmosphere.
South Florida truly has something for everyone.

South Dade Agriculture is rich in
tradition and dates as far back as early
as the late 1800s. It is not only unique
to the development of South Dade, but
also plays an important role in
supplying produce year round due to
it’s mild winters. During winter months
our growers produce traditional

cold in other parts of the country to
raise them. Growers also have year- round production of tropical fruits and
vegetables such as avocados, passion fruit, malanga and boniato. Another
sector of the industry is Asian specialties like Thai guava, Thai basil, Thai
eggplant, lemon grass, bitter melon and various herbs and spices. We have
the most diversified agricultural area in the country, growing everything from
Avocados to Zucchini, which offers visitors the chance to see and taste
something new and exotic with each visit.
TROPICAL FRUITS
Many of the tropical fruits grown in South Florida today were introduced in the
late 1800s. Early settlers began to grow them in their backyards and by the
early 1900s there were plantings of avocados, mangos and citrus groves.
David Fairchild, Wilson Popenoe and others were responsible for the
introduction of tropical fruits that are now commonly grown in backyards and
groves of South Florida.
South Florida has a warm, humid subtropical climate that allows the
growing of unique, exotic tropical/subtropical fruits. No other area in the
continental U.S. has this climate and capability. South Florida is the number
one producer of mangos, large sized avocados, carambola, lychee, longan,
mamey sapote, banana/plantains, sugar apple/atemoya, coconut,
sapodilla, jackfruit and passion fruit.
There are approximately 13,000 acres of tropical fruits and the industry is
worth about $75 million. The popularity of some of the tropical fruits has
increased considerably. Avocados, limes, bananas, pineapple, papaya and
mangos are now consumed by the general U.S. population. There are
indications that consumption of other fruits such as lychee, longan, mamey
sapote, carambola, etc. will also increase in the future. Worldwide, the future
of the tropical fruit industry is bright. However, their production in South Florida
is in jeopardy because of the negative impact imports are having on prices
thus affecting profitability.
VEGETABLE ROW
10
Miami-Dade County is referred to as the nation’s “Salad Bowl” and “Winter
Bread Basket.” Miami-Dade County has a long history of vegetable
production, especially winter tomatoes for export to northern areas, which
dates back to the late 1800s. The 2002 Census of Agriculture reported
roughly 38,000 acres of vegetables. Vegetables are grown on both
Rockdale, and to a much lesser extent, marl soils. Major vegetables based on
acreage include beans, squash and tropical sweet potato.
Miami-Dade produces 54% of the state’s beans, 55% of the squash and
97% of the sweet potatoes. Sweet corn, tomatoes, malanga, okra, eggplant
and herbs are other significant crops. Of these, Miami-Dade produces 70% of
the state’s okra crop and 99% of the malanga. The total value of this sector
was over $100 million in 2002. Over 90% of Miami-Dade’s vegetables are
exported out of Florida. With the exception of tropical sweet potato and
tanier, which are grown year-round, most vegetables are produced from
September to May.

South Florida expressways use a system called Open
Road Tolling. Toll booths and change takers are being
eliminated on all south Florida toll roads. The Sunpass
system only works on Florida roads. The Sunpass is an
electronic transponder (in the form of a small sticker) put
on the windshield of your car. Each time you drive
through a toll, the toll amount is deducted from your
Sunpass account. Without a Sunpass present in your
car, this electronic toll system takes a picture of your
license plate and sends you a bill in the mail, Late fees
apply if payment is not received within 30 days. If you
rent a car, please ask to make sure the Sunpass is
included in your vehicle. Each rental car company uses
a different fee schedule for this rental option.
Go to www.sunpass.com for more information.
