It is a great time to live in Arizona. Why? First, congratulations to the Arizona Cardinals for winning the NFC Championship and going to the Super Bowl for the first time in their history. Whether you follow sports or not, Arizona was in the world spotlight last year when we hosted Super Bowl XLII for the second time, and the most watched Super Bowl ever. This year, our own team is in the Super Bowl! By the time you read this, we’ll know if they are world champions. But regardless of the results, as the first NFL team in Arizona history they are winners in our book. Or even our magazine! Second, our beloved former Governor Janet Napolitano has been appointed as Secretary of Homeland Security. I don’t have to tell you how important this job is today. We were proud to have her as our Governor. She attended many of our dinners and supported many of our causes. We’ll miss her in Arizona but we welcome her contribution to our country. But it took a great man to recongnize her talents. Not only has President Barack Obama hired a very cabable and bipartisan team, but he has united and excited this country like never before. Even people who didn’t vote for him can’t deny that there is an excitement in the air. I don’t even have to mention our great weather, a new Metro Light Rail, growing GLBT community and, of course, ION Arizona. Yes, t’s good to live in Arizona! 12 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 We are working on some exciting new programs to be launched in the next couple of months. First we are bringing back our ION VIP Key Chain and introducing a new monthly ION Party Crew Party. Then we will be publishing an expanded Phoenix Pride Special Edition in April and in July, we’re launching an all new annual publication called the ION Yearbook - The Year In Pictures. It’ll be like no other. Plus, we are launching our own Facebook, Twitter in addition to our updated MySpace along with our weekly ION Party Spam e-mail blasts. Go to our website to link to these great features and sign up for Party Spam so you don’t miss a thing. I don’t have to tell you that times are tough for many gay and gay-friendly businesses. They need your support more than ever. So instead of going to Applebee’s or Cheesecake Factory, go to Switch, FEZ, TICOZ or any of the other restaurants featured in ION. When looking for a unique gift for youself or someone you love, go to Root Seller Gallery or Off Chute Too instead of Walmart. Eat and shop at private and independent restuarants and merchants when possible. And by all means, get out and have some fun at our many bars and clubs advertising in ION. Did you know that we have more gay bars per capita than any other city? “More bars in more places.” I like that. Enjoy this issue, get out, have fun, volunteer, donate and get involved. Be a part of the community. Your community. It needs you! What’s New? Compared to last year, the first quarter of 2009 will be slow. But there are a few treasures to be found. Check out new albums from Annie Lennox (CD/DVD combo of hits), Leona Lewis (spirit deluxe with bonus tracks), Bruce Springsteen, Missy Elliott (tentative), Morrissey as well as… Matt Alber Hide Nothing Had I received this “ontime,” this definitely would have made my top five of 2008. Part Rufus and k.d., this album soars beyond in terms of quality, sound and emotive pangs of the heart. Lead single “End of the World,” embodies passion to the “nth”degree, while tracks “Monarch” and “Slow Club” slither with brilliance. There’s even a cover of Imogen’s “Hide and Seek” for those seeking familiarity. Trust me when I say this is an album not to be missed. When Alber hits those high notes, you can feel your eyes swell and your gut churn. Kylie Minogue Boombox For ultimate fans (that don’t already have these remixes), this disc is for you. This collection comes complete with 19 remixed tracks spawning most of her career with EMI, including her newest release X. But buyers beware: a good majority of these are not the remixes as heard in the clubs or on dance radio stations. Most of these are the B-side remixes, dubs and independent mixes that were scrapped from earlier projects. Standout tracks include the New Order remix of “Can’t Get You” and Casino’s remix of “Your Disco Needs You.” 30 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 The Fray - The Fray The sensation behind “How to Save a Life” is back. Boldly self-titled, The Fray stick to the formula that made them a sensation and infuse their music with an almost U2 sound. This time around, their ballads are even frailer as heard in “Never Say Never” while their rock infused jams are grittier as evident in “Absolute.” And then there’s the lead single “You Found Me” - a safe introduction to the entire program with its great piano panging riff as heard on most of the album. Overall, this album keeps fans happy while winning new ones over. Lily Allen It’s Not Me, It’s You The MySpace sensation is back and simply put, this album is pure bubble gum pop as delicious as Hubba Bubba! For this go, Lily channels a bit of Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue on tracks “Everyone’s At It” and “The Fear” while she remains her cheeky lyrical self on “Never Gonna Happen” and “Fuck You.” And then there’s “The Fear” - the hoedown jam you’d hear at Charlie’s; definitely one of the brightest spots of the album. She’s bigger, better and more sleek than ever. I see a new Diva in the making! In other music news, U2 is set for a new horizon on March 3rd. Their new offering will be available in five different formats, ranging from $10 to $100. With the digital age in full swing, U2 is hoping to keep physical buyers happy. Their attempt however may prove futile as 2009 may be the last real year for physical CD sales. Until next month… February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 31 by Kimberly M. Ruff kimberlymruff@yahoo.com Movie Previews February is a month of many celebrations and holidays: Super Bowl Sunday is the 1st followed by Groundhog’s Day on the 2nd, and President’s Day is the 16th. On the 14th is Valentine’s Day as well as the anniversary of Arizona statehood and the entire month is dedicated to African-American history. In light of all the causes for celebration, I have picked three movies for preview: three about love, one about African-Americans, and all of them vaguely familiar like some movie we’ve seen before… He’s Just Not That Into You Starring: Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, etc. Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, He’s Just Not That Into You explores the strategizing, anguish, and confusion that go hand-in-hand with today’s dating scene. Set in Baltimore, the film follows the often-intersecting lives of various singles and couples as they try to navigate the rough waters of finding and falling in love. Like any typical romantic comedy, it has its occasional formulaic moments but with such a talented cast of comedians and comediennes, He’s Just Not That Into You still manages to entertain with its biting commentary and dry wit about modern day romance. Release Date: February 06, 2009 Medicine for Melancholy Starring: Wyatt Cenac, Tracey Heggins If you’re a fan of Comedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart, then you are probably already familiar with one of his writers and “field” reporters, Wyatt Cenac. Taking a break from comedic writing and acting, Cenac stars as Micah, a San Francisco-based activist in Barry Jenkin’s film, Medicine for Melancholy. After a late 32 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 night of partying, Micah has a one night stand with Joanne (Heggins). Sobriety and the morning sun frame their activities in a different light and it seems the two are incompatible, but after spending the day together, they begin to realize that maybe they’re not as different as they thought they were. A tender take on the irrationality of the heart and a touching tale about the attraction of opposites. Release Date: February 06, 2009 Confessions of a Shopaholic Starring: Isla Fisher, John Goodman, Joan Cusack, Hugh Dancy Based on the best-selling book by Sophia Kinsella, Confessions stars Wedding Crasher’s Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood, a compulsive shopper whose habits wreak havoc on her bank account. Using her savvy at spotting good sales, she lands a career giving out financial advice to the same company responsible for publishing her favorite fashion magazine. While her clever writing style earns accolades, it doesn’t pay her bills and the threat of bankruptcy forces her to decide between Gucci and good sense. This movie is ideal for those of us that played the “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a pair of Manolos today” game with our credit cards and seems particularly timely in light of our current tenuous economic situation. Since I have no beloved to write sonnets for, I decided I would write a poem for all my beloved readers in the style of our First Lady of Poetic Depression, Emily Dickinson: Valentine’s Day Constructed contrivance of commercial deceit Love is fickle Save your receipts Painful reminder of solitary singlehood If I could I would Lay my tired skin beside first available man Must be disease and drug free Unless I want VD In which case I embrace The shame and embarrassment of the Craig’s List ads. That being said, let’s review some superawesome joyous movies about LOVE! We’re All Angels Starring: Jason, deMarco Strictly a documentary, this film follows the unambiguously gay duo, Jason and deMarco, over the course of a year. Both Christian pop stars, the long-term couple discuss their youth, coming out, finding each other and the difficult process of reconciling the quandary of faith and sexuality. Jason was raised Pentecostal and deMarco was raised a Catholic, but both have found a pleasant middle ground spiritually and emotionally where they celebrate their faith and love. We’re All Angels provides a powerful lesson for all of us: that we can have our cake and eat it to, as nothing is higher testament to faith and devotion like love. 36 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom Starring: Darryl Stephens, Jensen Atwood, Rodney Chester, Gary LeRoi Gray, Douglas Spearman, Christian Vincent, Jonathan Julian Based on the LOGO TV show of the same name, Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom follows our cast to Martha’s Vineyard for the wedding of Wade (Atwood) and Noah (Stephens). When closeted superstar rapper, Baby Gat shows up unannounced to win Noah’s affection, the entire wedding party begins to question if their own romantic commitments are with the right people for the right reasons. Caffeine stimulated wedding planner, Alex (Chester) worries that the recent adoption of an HIV positive baby may simply be a band-aid for his eleven-year relationship with Trey, Chance (Spearman) over-intellectualizes his marriage to Eddie (Julian) when a charming young student reveals his crush, and Noah’s best-friend, Eddie (Vincent) seems more anti-commitment than ever which causes everyone to wonder what the real issue is. Played out over the course of the weekend and multiple courses of delicious food prepared by Alex, the group realizes that love involves work, admitting when you’re wrong and a willingness to ask for second chances. I hope everyone has a lovely Valentine’s Day; even if you’re single there’s plenty of love in friendship, family, and faith to keep you warm at night. Sadly, not everyone has a significant other to spend it with. But does that mean the poor single saps have to spend the most romantic evening of the year alone? Hell, no. There are plenty of gorgeous men willing to offer their companionship this Valentine’s Day – for a price. If you have the dime, they’ve got the time. We polled four professionals from the world’s leading male escort listing service, Rentboy.com: Adam Isaac (www.rentboy.com/adamisaac), Pete, a winner of Overall Best Escort 2008 (www. rentboy.com/LondonBoyPete), Kevin Slater (www.rentboy.com/kevinslater) and Rusty (www.rentboy.com/rusty105) to uncover the answer to the biggest question this Valentine’s Day: what is the price of love? By Leif Mendelson ION: Jennifer Lopez’s ‘love don’t cost a thing’. Why does yours? Adam Isaac: Sex is not love and love is not free. A relationship takes work. I am always open to meeting a special guy who can see past what I do to pay my bills. There’s a lot more to me than escorting. London Boy Pete: Jennifer has enough ‘rocks’ of her own to give her love away! Also my love is probably a lot more fun to guys than hers. Oh and I love selling my love, it gives it a certain feel you just can’t describe. Kevin: My love is free, too. My time, however, is $250 an hour. Rusty: Hiring an escort is not about love. It’s about having a boy to spend time with and have fun. Love really doesn’t cost anything. It’s not something you can put a price one. Having a hot boy you have picked out for yourself to have fun with, on the other hand, is something that can be negotiated. ION: What can you offer a lonely heart this Valentine’s Day? London Boy Pete 40 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 Adam: I can offer this advice: seek spiritual growth, because humans are fallible. If you are lonely, seek what you have a need for and take the action. February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 41 rentboy.com London Boy Pete: What can’t I offer? Not only would I give him the horniest experience of his life, I would make his special day that little something more with great company and lots of fun, leaving him with a warm glow inside! Kevin: Companionship. Anything else that happens is between two consenting adults. Rusty: I’m a very affectionate person so if you’re alone on valentines and want a warm body to cuddle with, give me a shout and we can spice up your Valentines Day! ION: Is Valentine’s Day a busy work day for rentboys? Adam: Right now, no day is a busy day. I am so broke that I am frightened. One of my biggest fears is not being able to meet my financial responsibilities. The busiest time for me has always been the summer months. London Boy Pete: I already have bookings, so it must be. I think Christmas has to be the busiest holiday. I’ve been a guy’s Christmas present several times already. Kevin: The day after Thanksgiving is typically my busiest day. Christmas Day is also busy. ION: How much money can you make on Valentine’s Day? Rusty London Boy Pete: You never know how much you are going to make. I’ve been paid $2000 for an hour from a guy, but you can never tell. Adam ION: What are most clients looking for on Valentine’s Day? Adam: Valentine’s Day is just a day where if you want to feel pressured to think about your love-life a little more, than feel free. I think about love and real romance every day. I’ve paid for sex before, and I couldn’t see how hiring a call boy would make my romantic woes any less heavy. London Boy Pete: A little bit of added attention. Whether it’s a little more sensuality, understanding… or he might just want a harder pounding! Kevin: Not many clients confuse rentboys and romance, so Valentine’s Day isn’t different from most other days - at least not for me. A cute and cuddly blond may have a different story to tell. Rusty: Something to spice up their day. ION: What’s the strangest gift you have ever received from a client? Adam: One time a client gave me huge, antique Guerlaine perfume bottle – the type that was originally made for the likes of Napoleon. It held a liter of perfume and is ornately decorated with the old Guerlaine honeybee etching on the glass. Beautiful! The most useful gift I ever received was a Toyota Tacoma. I wish that would happen again. Anyone have a car they don’t want? London Boy Pete: In the last few months, I’ve been given three different paintings from three different clients. If this keeps up, I’m going to open a gallery. Kevin: Maybe not the strangest, but the best gift I’ve received is my sling. February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 42 Rusty: It was a little weird when a client gave me a custom made teddy bear with my name on it. What is even more weird is that he said it was his wife’s idea. ION: Does it get hard putting other guys’ companionship needs before your own? Adam: Only one percent of my clients are looking for companionship. The other 99 percent are looking for “it”. You know what I mean? London Boy Pete: It just makes you enjoy your own time more. I think it’s like a switch when I’m working and having fun. I don’t even know how it all works, but it does. Kevin: Not at all! I love meeting new people. Rusty: I don’t think of it that way. I put my self first. I don’t do anything that I’m uncomfortable with. I am there to entertain my client but if I am not having fun, he won’t either. ION: Has a client’s love for you ever become scary? Adam: I practice healthy boundaries with my clients. I make it very clear to them that it is a business relationship, nothing more. London Boy Pete: Some people can get really obsessed. I always back off from guys if it gets too intense. Kevin: There have been a few times where I’ve had to gently back clients down. But people tend to get it. There are very nice ways of saying, “Look, this is my job. I like you, too, but it’s professional.” I’ve heard horror stories from other escorts, but luckily I’ve never had it too bad. Rusty: It has never been scary, but it has been annoying. One of my clients kept calling and calling. Without exaggeration, I had 48 missed calls and 22 voice messages in the span of one night. ION: Would you give up your career for “the one”? February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 43 Adam: My thought is that we don’t even attract the one we are meant to be with until we are happy and contented with our own life choices. And although I am not exactly ashamed of being an escort, I know it is not my ideal job. But anything is possible! I just met a guy over the weekend while I was on a call that involved a group who is really hot and really sweet. He already knows what I do. We’ll see what happens. I hope to fall in love someday. Some say that love knows no bounds. I would love to believe that. I really would. London Boy Pete: I wouldn’t give it up for anyone. Being successful at what I do comes before anything else. Kevin: I can imagine a scenario under where I meet a wonderful guy and put the escorting aside. I love my job, but I love “love” too. Rusty: If things got serious and he wanted me to stop, it would be up for discussion. Relationships are about compromise. This intimate and cozy restaurant occupies a renovated structure that once housed The Showman’s Union Hall. Who knew that carnies union? Since the circus barkers left, owner D.J. Fernandez and his girlfriend, Jessica, remodeled the building and said, “Step right up! Hurry, hurry, hurry! Come one, come all!” to a dining room serving what they call “neighborhood comfort food” – with an imaginative twist. With the help of Mitch Hoverman of the Roosevelt district’s Palatte restaurant, a startlingly imaginative and mouth-watering menu was created with nothing over $20. It reflects culinary tastes from the East Coast, the South, with a little bit of Portuguese influence thrown in to spice things up a bit. All the ingredients are organic and procured locally when possible. And that keeps everything fresh as a frat boy on a Friday night. 602-993-4567 phx 520-791-2345 tuc Get a Date Tonight! You’ll get a spate of milky cheese sticks served with savory and sweet dipping sauces. These aren’t like anything you ever had at Applebee’s, kids. Tease your tastebuds with a selection from their menu of “Smaller Plates.” These tasty morsels lend themselves toward an almost “tapas style” way of dining. There’s even a long trestle table for either community-style dining, or a large party with a lot of your friends. If you need a date - or brought one - try their Medjool dates stuffed with chorizo from Schreiner’s Sausages and melted Gruyère Start off with the roasted baby beets in a spiced mustard cream sauce. Your mom might lecture you about how rich the root is in potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and helps prevent heart disease and the heavy-duty iron is a plus when “auntie brings red roses.” But I’m going to praise their sweetness – they’re high in sugar, but low cal – and tender, even buttery texture. Not only do they have dishes featuring a luxurious version of Chicken and Waffles, they also have a divine trout fillet. We recommend the maple roasted pork tenderloin served with Gorgonzola grits. These five big, fat, delicately grilled chunks of the “other white meat” topped with delicate strip of bacon will knock you off your feet. If that doesn’t do the trick, the adorable waiter Craig flashing his pearly white smile will definitely send you reeling. Wink! For a wild card, there’s always Vovo’s Favorite. A word to the wise: Tuck Shop fills up fast with loyal locals. To avoid a waiting, get there by 5:45 p.m. If you’re dining later, enjoy their carefully selected wines, beers or spirituous liqueurs while you wait. Sorry, no reservations accepted - just hurry up! A t 28-years-old, Raphael Solomon knows a little something about life, love and the pursuit of happiness. Self-describing his sound as “pop with a Latin twist,” his music is based on basic and complex human emotions and experiences. Take “Sex with My Ex,” for instance – the first single from his debut album, Beautiful Dancer. It was penned by Solomon after preparing supper Most of Solomon’s songs, in fact, are steeped in similar soils: the concept of love – or the lack thereof. With all his talk of heartbreak, however, Raphael also has a strong sense of humor. Like the night he became the king of more than a few people’s jungles. “I once went onstage dressed as Tarzan and twenty seconds into my number, my loincloth came undone,” he recalls. The performance became a metaphor for his life. “I just picked it up, dusted it off, and continued with my performance.” Beautiful Dancer is in stores and on i-Tunes now. ION: You are gorgeous, Raphael. Why, then, are you so unlucky in love? RS: Thank you, but I’m not sure I’d go so far as saying that I am unlucky in love. WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 ION: Are you smart when it comes to love? RS: I think love is about being true to your self. Sure, I can sit down and think of ways to keep a lover hooked but I’m not sure I want a lover to stay because I played the game right. I want people to stay because there is no place they would rather be. ION: You sing about sex with your ex. Can you see now why that is always a mistake? RS: The scary thing is I still don’t think it was a mistake! Maybe that’s just me being a guy and thinking with my dick. ION: Most of your songs tend to be about heartbreak. RS: I’ve had relationships with some wonderful people; we just weren’t in the same place at the same time in our lives and when you’re not in sync, it makes it pretty impossible to sustain a relationship. ION: Did the sex reignite the relationship? RS: Well, no, but sometimes you don’t stop loving someone even long after the relationship has ended. You may accept that it’s over but you still to want to revisit it sometimes. ION: Looking at you, I can’t understand why someone would flee the country. But, according to your song “Baby’s Gone to Rio,” that’s what they did. RS: Sadly, it’s true. ION: You weren’t left feeling empty? RS: I guess I did feel a little emotionally vandalized. Ok, you got me. I’ll keep my pants on next time, ok? ION: What did you do to make your lover run away? RS: (Laughs) I’m secretly a high maintenance and possessive freak. Nah, I’m just kidding! I don’t know what I did, really. I don’t think I did anything wrong. Why does it have to be my fault? 80 ION: Could it be that you attract people that are only interested in your face and body? RS: Initially, we’re all attracted to people on a physical level. I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t. I’ll admit that there have been people who are just interested in the physical part of me, and that’s been a problem because they’re not always interested in learning what’s inside of me. I’m more than a pretty face. (Laughs) ION: Does your intensity sometimes scare people away? RS: Sometimes. But they always end up coming back when they realize that a passionate lover beats a cold and frigid lover any day. They come back because I made them feel special. I don’t edit my behavior. If February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 81 1ST ANNIVERSARY I’m into someone, I let them know it. ION: In the title track, “Beautiful Dancer,” you text your lover that “you never want to be their ex.” Isn’t that something you shouldn’t tell someone?” RS: Why not? Every person in love wants to believe that their love will last forever. ION: Why not simply text “Hey babe, miss you …” RS: I do, sometimes. But reaffirming your love is a positive thing. It’s not like I am desperate or needy. Saying something like, “I want to be with you forever,” is a point of strength for me in that I am a man who is not afraid to say what he feels. ION: You say in the song that your “heart knows no lies.” But don’t you agree that sometimes in a relationship, you need to hide some of those loveydovey feelings to make the love grow? RS: Call me a romantic but I believe the purpose of every union is to allow your faith in love to evolve and to show you that for every person who runs away from you, there is another person who is willing to run to you. You can’t be afraid of love if you are seeking to be loved in return. And “my heart knows no lies” in the sense that I know that an equally emotionally expressive lover like me would be the best match for me. ION: If there’s one thing I learned in the CD, it’s that even pretty people hurt sometimes. RS: (Laughs) I am going to have a hugely inflated ego after this interview. It’s true, everybody hurts. ION: What exactly are you looking for in a partner? RS: Someone who I’m physically attracted to, sexually satisfied with, mentally stimulated by and emotionally engaged with. Someone who is ready to reciprocate the love they receive. Someone I can be myself with and someone that I wouldn’t want to change. ION: How close have you come to finding perfection? RS: No one is perfect. ION: That’s true, every experience is a lesson. What have you learned from your past relationships that you’ll apply to your next? RS: To remain true to myself, so when the right person comes along, they’ll love me for who I am. ION: Do you still believe “the one” exists? RS: Absolutely. I gave my love a chicken that had no bone.” … and then my love dumped me next to the Skill Crane at B.S. West and left me for a Circle K clerk twelve years ago. Oh, sure, like that’s a big upgrade on the food chain of gay boys. I should’ve kept the cherry and the chicken. At least that way I would’ve still had something to choke – although I would’ve rather choked the both of them instead. Sure. Happy big, fat, stupid Valentine’s Day. It’s a good thing I’m over it now. But love is still in the air. Along with everybody’s legs. America just started what will hopefully be a long love affair with our new president, Barack Obama. At least for the next four to eight years. Ben Bethel of The Clarendon Hotel had a big gala on the rooftop with drink specials and free appeteasers to celebrate the end of a long, horrible, ugly divorce from the last guy who parked his pink ‘n’ white tush in Oval Office. And what could be sweeter than the $3,610 raised for the Be a H.E.R.O. heroes at the swanky “Sugar and Champagne” event at the Wrigley Mansion staged by SWAY Events? What could be more delicious than chocolate AD DONATED BY ION Arizona Magazine and champagne, darlings? Oh, I know: Nick Duckro. Definitely. Yum yum. And was that Coronado Café’s handsome Robert McCarville I saw hobnobbing with one of the dreamy bachelors up for auction? Who could miss that vision of sartorial splendor, haberdasher to the glitterati of Phoenix, Gabriel Diaz of Dragonfly ? ¡Ai ai, ai! ¡Cuanto le gusta, le gusta, le gusta, Gabriel! That darling couple celebrating their legal (in California), conjugal matrimonification was Mr. & Mr. Christopher Jensen (née Palumbo) and Jeremy Jensen attended the well-heeled event, too. You know how sometimes Fate says, “When one Door shuts another Door opens?” Well, it’s true. Except in this case the same Door that shut and was the same Door that opened. Yep, The Door in Tempe threw open their Door for the Grand (re)Opening. The new management has redecorated the place beautifully and the staff couldn’t be nicer. Queenpins Jim Vigil and Chris Smith kept busy slinging the drinks to the thirsty and satisfied crowd. They’re just aDOORable. Merrymakers included those darling Denver transplants Dan Church and his beau Joey. February 2009 WWW.IONAZ.COM 101 (Continued) A great big “Hurrah” goes out to “Missy” Al Perkins, fabled bartender and cocktail waitress from days of yore at BS West who made an appearance with Tim DePlanche and with Cameron on his arm. Once a Mary, always a Mary. Hamburger Mary alumnus Curtis Steinhoff was there along with the handsome Kyle Powers.. What’s it all about, Alfie? Maybe your delish boyfriend, Jarrod? I’ll say! (pictured previous page, top) Our Party Penguins of the Month, those wild and crazy boyfriends Ryan Freeman and Josh Anderson (right) made a driveby-drinking appearance at The Door only to be whisked off to icepics videobar who was celebrating their first anniversary of fun in Phoenix. The booze there poured like – well – booze, I’d say. You can imagine everybody’s surprise when none other than R.J. Merrill won the grand prize drawing of a video iPod. R.J. was overwhelmed and very excited to win it and can’t wait to start using it for poaching eggs and texting his friends. The toasty weather at the Rodeo was 102 WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2009 perfect for weather for watching cute cowpokes like the dreamy Matt Pruitt and has pal Stacy Jay Cavaliere. I also saw optician to the stars, Truett Fuentes from Bar1 and his and squeezie-weezie, Ron Rogers (pictured previous page, bottom) from Kobalt who stole Truett from me. Remember, Palmolive softens hands while you do the dishes. Bar1 co-owner Kenny Sannes was looking very chummy with a cute, young cast member from the touring company of “Hair” while they were in town. Hope that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome you’ve got didn’t prevent you from giving his wig a good comb-out. A great big congrats goes out to my funny Valentine, The Honorable Tom Simplot unanimously elected Vice Mayor by the City Council. Today … Vice Mayor. Tomorrow … Assistant Buyer in Men’s Accessories at Macy’s – if you’re lucky. Send Addison your Valentines or vitriol. But a juicy steak dinner would be even better.
