CWEA Industrial and Hazardous Waste Committee, North July 8, 1999 Meeting Minutes Meeting: Hosted by: Gayle Tupper Hayward City Hall, 777 B Street Hayward, CA. 94544 Attendees: Rich von Langen, Gayle Tupper, Allen Grayson, Darren Greenwood, Tim Potter, Vaughn Henrie, Tellis Hines, Jack Dickinson Technical Presentation Trials and Tributyltin Tribulations – Darren Greenwood, City of Livermore. Darren provided a case study on the City of Livermore’s effort during a four-year tributyltin investigation. Darren’s entertaining presentation focused on TBT sources, sampling protocols, and data validity questions. Business Meeting 1. Introductions/Opening comments Rich made some opening remarks and made some announcements: The CWEA Northern Regional Training Conference will be held in Monterey September 19-21, 1999. The CWEA Southern Regional Training Conference will be held in Long Beach November 15-16, 1999. This year’s CWEA Industrial and Hazardous Waste Conference will be held over a 3-day period in Huntington Beach, February 7-9, 2000. It will be held in conjunction with an EPA Advanced Pretreatment Training Session. A contract has been signed with the hotel for the conference, the Huntington Beach Waterfront Hilton. 2. Treasurers Report The current Committee balance is $25,272. Please note this balance is prior to the I&HW contribution to the CWEA Office. A $2,000 deposit was made for the November P2 Symposium in Monterey. Rich indicated that $5,572.31 is to go to CWEA to reduce the I&HW Committee carryover to $20,000. CWEA is asking for $5,000/day for each day of conference. This may be waived for the I&HW sponsored P2 Symposium as that is not priced to show any return. There was a discussion on Association fee increases, Membership fees vs. Conference fees. 3. Sub-Committee Reports Plant of the Year, given by Tim Potter. There is a commitment to this year by the existing subcommittee. Tim will confirm sub-committee membership. There was discussion of feeding the CWEA award winners into the WEF/National Award process. Rich said he would touch base with the CWEA on this possible expansion of the awards process. Names of the I&HW Sub-Committee Chairs were given out by Rich von Langon. Each subcommittee will be evaluated; an annual deliverable will be required from each sub-committee to demonstrate viability. i.e. Technical presentation at a committee meeting or a session at the annual Conference or P2 Symposium. Rich said he would get a current listing of the subcommittee participants to Allen, who will contact each for future deliverable (attached). Oil/Grease sub-committee by Jack Dickinson. Currently there are 2 active members. Jack provided a hand-out on grease disposal, haulers and vouchers; a system which removes the incentive for illegal dumping. 4. Announcements Bulletin deadlines. Rich said there was an August 2 deadline for the P2 Symposium reminder. The P2 Symposium this year will be held in Monterey, November 8-9. The theme is “Concepts to Actions”. Darren provided a session-specific draft Program. Contact Darren Greenwood (925-373-5230) for further details. The next scheduled I&HW Committee meeting in the North is September 14 at Sacramento County, hosted by Sam Harader.
