Liver Failure, A Healing Savior
D
arren’s body burned with fever as
he lay on the floor. He had been
diagnosed at the government hospital
with Hepatitis A, a viral infection of the
liver. The doctor told Darren’s mother to
take him home to die.
Alarmed at his parched lips and
the yellowish appearance of his skin
and eyes, his mother went in search of
assistance. She rushed to the nearby
Bethany Medical Missionary College, a
Gospel Ministries International project
in Guyana.
“Help! Please help! My son is
dying.” Her pleading eyes and voice
caught the attention of the staff. They
followed her home and were alarmed at
Darren’s urgent situation.
“Please!” The mother sobbed again.
“Can’t you do something for him?”
The staff transported Darren and his
mother to their campus and did their
best to make them comfortable in the
makeshift treatment area.
One missionary college student,
Bernardo, took a special interest in
Darren and provided much of his
care. Darren’s treatments included
hydrotherapy, sunbaths, clay poultices,
and herbal teas.
“It was a life-changing experience
for me,” Bernardo says. “I saw the
power of God working through simple
remedies to save Darren’s life.”
After 10 days, Darren’s mother took
him to the government hospital for more
lab tests. The liver enzymes had dropped
in half—a miracle! The nurses were
shocked that Darren was still alive.
Darren remained at the missionary
college for 10 more days. His eyes
became white and clear again, and his
skin returned to a healthy brown. His
energy was contagious, and the staff were
joyous at his recovery.
The missionary college is finishing a
lifestyle center that will provide a proper
place to treat patients like Darren. While
they wait for the needed funds, the staff
continue to trust God and to teach others

Making a Cookbook Connection
W
hile flipping through Herghelia
Institute’s vegetarian cookbook, a
young Romanian couple learned about
the ministry’s lifestyle center. Intrigued,
Gigel and Lavinia Tatu offered their
parents the opportunity to attend a
lifestyle session.
After participating in the 11-day
program, the couple’s parents were
enthusiastic about their experience at
Herghelia. Gigel and Lavinia were eager
to attend a lifestyle session as well.
The couple attended in October
2010 with Lavinia’s brother, Chioran.
During the Sabbath program, they sat on
the first row and absorbed the message.
The Tatus enjoyed the lifestyle session
and were impressed by the quality of
the staff and their knowledge of health.
When they returned home, they
decided to make drastic lifestyle changes
and even hired a vegetarian cook. They
also shared their discovereies with
friends and family.
In addition to the couple’s interest in
health, Gigel asked religious questions
and was open to hearing more about
God. He even began attending church
and reading the Bible.
Through the lifestyle center,
Herghelia has had the opportunity to
reach out to many individuals, including
influential members of the community.
In October 2010, five local mayors took
part in the lifestyle program along with
the Tatu family. The team at Herghelia is
thankful for the opportunity to witness
to guests like Gigel and Lavinia, as well
as for God’s health guidelines. p
