David Bull Publishing / 2013 Page 6 Page 8 — museo ducati — ferrari myth calendar T his year we’ve produced a slimmer catalog focused on our latest titles and special editions, as well as suggestions from our backlist and a preview of upcoming projects. Our newest book, Museo Ducati (page 6) means a great deal to me. As a longtime Ducati owner, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take readers inside the Italian motorcycle maker’s official museum in Bologna, Italy. The week I spent there with photographer Peter Harholdt, author Chris Jonnum, and curator Livio Lodi was remarkable, and each time I look at Museo Ducati it brings back fond memories. I’m really pleased with the The Museo Ducati team on-site in Bologna. From left to right: author Chris Jonnum, publisher David Bull, photographer Peter Harholdt, and assistant Donna Tribby. In back, leaning on the seat of Mike Hailwood’s 900 Super Sport, is curator Livio Lodi. 2 Page 7 Page 9 — FANGIO & MERCEDES-BENZ — scuderia Ferrari CALENDAR way the book captures the essence of this unique shrine to racing histor y. Two new Publisher’s Editions (pages 4-5) feature autographs from some of the greatest names in motorsports. The Publisher’s Edition of Formula One at Watkins Glen is signed by four world champions: Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, and Mario Andretti. And the Publisher’s Edition of Can-Am Cars in Detail includes an extraordinary roster of designers and drivers. Another limited edition item is Günther Raupp’s 2013 Ferrari Myth (page 8). Each year just 5,000 of these ultra-high quality calendars are issued, and I’m proud to be their exclusive American distributor. And for F1 fans, Raupp also has the official 2013 Scuderia Ferrari calendar (page 9). Finally, I’m pleased to offer Hartmut Lehbrink’s Fangio & Mercedes-Benz (page 7). First published in Germany to mark Fangio’s 100th anniversary, it’s a unique look at a uniquely effective partnership. In Museo Ducati, author Chris Jonnum and photographer Peter Harholdt go inside the museum to profile 25 of the greatest motorcycles on display there. The tour begins with a 1947 Cucciolo motorized bicycle and concludes with the 2010 Desmosedici GP10 ridden by 2006 MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden. The bikes are shown in stunning detail through photographs taken inside the museum in a specially designed mobile studio. Fangio & Mercedes-Benz Alliance of the Best Hartmut Lehbrink Hardcover, 10” x 10”, 192 pages, 14 illustrations, 171 black-and-white and color photographs ISBN-13: 978-3-868525-51-9 $59.95 M ore than a century after his birth, JuanManuel Fangio remains one of the most revered names in motorsports. Between 1951 and 1957, Fangio won an astounding five World Championships—more than any other Formula One driver until Michael Schumacher captured his sixth title in 2003. Fangio raced and won for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari, but many consider his brief stint with Mercedes-Benz in 1954-55 the high point of his career. In Fangio & Mercedes-Benz: Alliance of the Best, Hartmut Lehbrink offers a fresh perspective on the life of a legend and his unique partnership with the great German marque. Originally published in Germany to commemorate Fangio’s centennial in 2011, this beautifully produced book includes recollections of Fangio from his friends, family, and such fellow drivers as Tony Brooks, Hans Herrmann, Stirling Moss, and Jackie Stewart. The revealing and informative text is presented in German and English, and is illustrated with a wealth of previously unpublished photographs from the Daimler archives. The book also includes chapters on Fangio’s early years in Argentina, his first forays into Formula One, and his post-Mercedes career and retirement. There’s also an extended interview conducted with Fangio in 1982, and an intriguing analysis of his record compared to those of later F1 champions. This book captures well the spirit of the man and should make a welcome addition to any enthusiast’s library. —Vintage Racecar David Bull Publishing Orders: 800-831-1758 or www.bullpublishing.com 7 2013 Ferrari Myth Calendar Ferrari Official Licensed Product Photographed by Günther Raupp 19” x 27” 12-month wall calendar printed on highquality art-gloss paper, 13 color photographs ISBN-13: 978-3-938316-18-4 $89.95 F or almost 30 years, photographer Günther Raupp has produced the only calendars officially sanctioned by Ferrari. In Elva: The Cars, The People, The History, János Wimpffen provides the first complete account of Elva’s evolution from a homegrown builder of Specials to a major player on the sports-car scene. Elva also tells the story of the people who created the cars—starting with founder Frank Nichols—as well as those who drove them. In Britain, Elva drivers included established names like Archie Scott Brown and Stuart Lewis-Evans, while in the U.S. Mark Donohue scored some of his earliest wins in Elva Courier and Formula Jr. cars. And Elva also helped Bruce McLaren launch a racing dynasty by building the first McLaren-Elvas. This 500-page epic leaves no stone unturned nor archive unexplored. —Vintage Racecar An extremely well-crafted tale of the racing scene—both in the U.K. and here in the U.S.—from the 1950s right up to today’s vintage activities. —Road & Track 10 or two decades, the small town of Watkins Glen, New York stood as one of the premier venues for Formula One racing. Michael Argetsinger, whose father Cameron first brought racing to the Glen, recalls that era in Formula One at Watkins Glen: 20 Years of the United States Grand Prix, 1961-1980. His year-by-year account star ts with the Formula Libre races of the late 1950s that set the stage for the first grand prix in 1961. In the coming years such legendar y champions as Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewar t, and Niki Lauda would all log multiple victories at the circuit, which was loved for its unique setting, top-flight organization, and lucrative prize money. Argetsinger also explains how the circuit changed over the years and the factors that ultimately led to its demise. The book has coffee-table dimensions, and fills them with photographs which are transporting. —The New York Times Argetsinger recounts each year in graphic detail and with engaging character. —Classic & Sports Car T here’s no better introduction to Porsche histor y than Porsche Sounds. Along with hundreds of rare photographs of classic Porsches in action, the book comes with three CDs of sounds and music. The first includes recordings of the engines of 30 historic cars, from the No. 1 356 Roadster through the 2009 Panamera Turbo, with each recording linked to images and descriptions in the text. The other two CDs set the mood through music: one features 11 tracks of high-powered rock, while the other offers more soothing classical compositions. Dieter Landenberger, head of Porsche’s archives and director of the Porsche Museum, highlights the company’s histor y and motorspor ts successes. Presented in German and English, the text includes chapters on major models such as the 356 and 911, as well as other cars introduced from the 1970s through the present day. Beautiful graphics, high-quality paper, and a linen cover make this a joy to pick up and peruse. Well done! —Vintage Motorsport Looking Ahead—New Books For The New Year W e’re working on several new titles for 2013. Two involve Tyler Alexander, who joined Bruce McLaren as a mechanic in 1963, and soon became an essential element in the team’s early success. After leaving McLaren in the early 1980s, Tyler returned to work for new owner Ron Dennis in 1990, remaining with the team until 2009. Our first book with Tyler collects the remarkable photographs he’s taken during his long career in racing. We also plan to publish Tyler’s autobiography, which will tell the full story of his life and career at McLaren as well as with other teams. We’re also working on a photographic history of the Trans-Am by Daniel Lipetz. The book covers the original series between 1966 and 1973, when the top American manufacturers and drivers battled for supremacy in such classic cars as the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and AMC Javelin. Between the hundreds of original photos and technically informed text, the book reveals a classic series in a new light. Finally, for motorcycle fans we’ll be offering a new volume on riding techniques written by Andrew Trevitt and three-time Superbike World Champion Troy Bayliss.
