I am delighted and honored to be considered for the position of
FCA President. I joined the FCA in 1987 after purchasing my first
Ferrari. Since 2001 I have served as Chapter President of the
Central Indiana Chapter of the FCA. I also ran the Formula One
race event for the FCA in Indianapolis, from 2001 to 2007. I was
then Co-Chair of the 2005 Annual Meet at Indianapolis along with
Mike Epifanio. And have helped the FCA with several other projects giving me visibility in to the issues facing the current board
of directors. I also believe there are many significant value-added
benefits still to be implemented with our current Membership programs and I will work hard to further enrich the FCA membership
experience. As for Ferrari ownership I started with a 308 GTSi, and
at various times had a F355 six speed then a 355 F1 GTS, added
a 512 TR and an F430 and now have a 458 Italia which lives happily next to my vintage British bike collection.

I became interested in cars, tuning and restoration at a young age
as my grandfather owned “Grieves Garage” in Springfield, Ohio,
where he did everything from tune to restore some pretty interesting cars. I spent much time with him and by age nine was
doing tune-ups, etc. myself. I was hooked on cars. Gramps died at
an early age (age 11 for me) and my auto work moved to our home
garage where my friends and I rebuilt engines, replaced water
pumps, all the normal stuff to save money. While at the Air Force
Academy, I was auto browsing in Colorado Springs one day in uniform and was looking at a rare Ferrari. The owner threw me the
keys and said “take it for a ride, son, I know I can trust you guys.”
I did and was hooked. I’ve since owned a 355, 328, 550, 575 and
currently a Superamerica F1. I’m a member of the FCA, however, not
because of the cars, but because of the people and have been fortunate to serve as a Chapter President and South Central Regional
Director. This is a great group!

The Ferrari 512 M: the sports prototype faster than the F1
The Ferrari 512 M was the last car Maranello designed for
the Sports Prototype World Championship to sport a 5-liter
engine. It was a veritable powerhouse of technology with
revolutionary features that, because of a rule change, sadly
never fully exploited its enormous potential. The 512 M
was an evolution of the 512 S, the car that Enzo Ferrari
launched in late 1969 as a rival to the Porsche 917, which
was very reliable but also too heavy at 1,940 pounds.
Debut. The Scuderia fielded the 512 M for the final race of
the 1970 season, which was also the only official event it
would compete in under the Maranello colors. The M, needless to remark, stood for “Modificata” because its weight
had been slashed to 1,796 pounds and its engine power
boosted to 620-hp. The bodywork had been redesigned too
improving down force. The car debuted at the Zeltweg 1000
Kilometers with Belgian Jacky Ickx and Italian Ignazio
Giunti at the wheel. The two Ferrari drivers were dogged by
technical woes in qualifying but in the race Ickx managed
to deliver times similar to those of the Porsche after only
a few laps. In fact, a short time later, he even topped the
pole position time he’d clocked with the Ferrari Formula 1
car just a couple of months before. The Porsches badly
struggled for the first time that season and only an alter-

nator breakage deprived the 512 M of a spectacular maiden victory. Before the end of the year, the car also competed in the 9 Hours of Kyalami, a non-World
Championship race that featured the Porsche of newlycrowned World Champion Jo Siffert. Although packing a
one-minute penalty for a false start, the 512 M won the
race with an astonishing two laps lead over its rival.
Clipped wings. 1971 should have been the crowning season for the 512 M, but the FIA announced that it was banning cars over 3-liters for 1972. As a result, Ferrari decided to abandon the project and concentrate on designing
the highly successful 312 PB. The 512 M’s only works wins
were at Kyalami and in the Interseries at Imola with Arturo
Merzario at the wheel. Around 15 were later sold to privateer teams who won a further 12 races. In a 512 M, Roger
Penske’s drivers Mark Donohue and David Hobbs came tantalizingly close to victory at Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans,
and Escuderia Montjuich’s Nino Vaccarella and José
Juncadella were forced to retire while leading at Le Mans
in 1971. The 512 M’s final victories came in 1973 courtesy
of Swiss driver Herbert Muller and his team in two races at
Hockenheim, Germany. The car fielded for the very last time
on April 3rd 1977, finishing seventh in the hands of Swiss
driver Heinrich Keller at the Paul Ricard circuit.
EVERYONE GOES CRAZY FOR THE 458 SPECIALE
Ferrari’s 458 Speciale has come out on top in an annual group test run by Autocar, one of the most important motoring magazines in the world, to find “Britain’s Best Driver Car.” This essentially means it’s the best
car as far as the demanding palates of drivers in the UK are concerned, a country that has always appreciated fine automobiles.
Maranello’s V-8 won over the eight judges with its amazing performance, setting the fastest lap time at the
Castle Combe circuit, beating a McLaren 650S and a Porsche 911 GT3, combined with the thrills it provides at
the wheel. “Everyone who climbed out of the 458 Speciale wanted to climb straight back in and do it all over
again,” said Autocar. “For a car to make you feel like that when it is that quick, is a very rare thing indeed.”
Apart from showing off all its dynamic qualities on the race track, it also delivered in the English countryside, dealing with the always-entertaining “B roads,” whose lumps and bumps, stop-start corners and
narrow lanes can be a stern test of the most sporty cars. Its eight cylinder engine has won the “Best
Performance Engine” award three times and this was just one of the factors that made for an extraordinary
consensus when it came to the Maranello car. Also taken into account were its overall balance and the ease
of driving on the limit, thanks to the advanced electronic control systems such as SSC (Side Slip Control).
THE 458 SPECIALE IS “EVO’S” CAR OF THE YEAR 2014
All the judges unanimously voted for the Ferrari V-8
The award-winning Ferrari 458 Speciale continues to collect the accolades from the world’s motoring press,
this time from EVO, with all seven judges on the Car of the Year 2014 panel unanimously voting the Ferrari
their top choice. In fact, this is the first time that any car has been voted as the winning car by all judges,
with comments such as: “It’s as pure a driving experience as you can imagine.” EVO also concluded: “Neat
and tidy, or fast and loose, it always rises to the occasion, nailing apices with pinpoint accuracy or cremating its rear tires with abandon. It flatters your driving, but still tests your ability.”

K I M I A N D T H E F 1 2 B E R L I N E T TA
Eleven journalists from the world’s leading motoring publications
took part in a special F12berlinetta track day at Fiorano on November
13th. Assisted by Ferrari’s engineers and team test-drivers, they were
given the opportunity to really clock up the miles as they endeavored
to push both themselves and the car to the limit. The group learned
to exploit both the 740-hp unleashed by the mid-front V-12 and the
sporty car’s brilliant natural balance to the fullest.
The wet track also allowed the journalists to experiment with the various different Manettino settings to push the car’s performance in a
variety of grip levels. But all the various dynamic controls were off
when Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver Kimi Räikkönen got behind the wheel
and provided some very special instruction. The guests then enjoyed
the thrill of lapping Fiorano at the World Champion’s side as he gave
vent to the F12berlinetta’s enormous power, delivering not just
record performance in the fastest car in the Prancing Horse range but
also huge fun for the attendees.
