Annual Meeting CCMC Party - Ferrari Club of America
VOLUME 03 ISSUE 04 Annual Meeting 2003 - by David Friar WINTER 2003/4 IN THIS ISSUE P.4 Jenning’s Garage Photo by Tom Lassen FCA/NER’s second annual meeting was held on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Mohegan Sun P.6 RI Clambake Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Approximately 60 people attended the festivities, which included a P.8 CCMC Wrapping Party cocktail party and dinner both hosted by the New England Region and Miller MotorCars of Greenwich, P.9 CCMC Holiday Party Connecticut. A very special “thank you” goes to Werner Pfister (who I call “Mr. Ferrari”, due his dedication P.12 Co-Directors Letter and knowledge of the marque) and to Miller MotorCars. Miller, Connecticut’s authorized Ferrari Dealer, P.16 Myopia Polo contributed $1,500 to the event, brought a brand new red 360 Challenge Stradale for display and provided P.19 License Plate Update raffle prizes for just about everybody who attended. The Stradale, surrounded by velvet ropes, drew quite a crowd as it stood proudly on display at the P.21 On the Fast Track Casino’s Hotel entrance. Prior to the start of the meeting, the hotel valet staff allowed several fine examples P.22 Book Review of the Ferrari marque to rest under the entry canopy P.23 Welcome New Members! following their afternoon frolic through the roads of southern Connecticut. Of course the staff had been well P.24 FCA/NER Sales Outlet tipped by all. Dr. Shachar Tauber, who drove the ugliest P.26 Welcome, Tom! Italian car I’ve ever seen (his Ferrari was undergoing repair work and he was driving a “loaner”), mentioned that one of the valets had paid for a recent Lasik surgery in cash using the tip money he earned at the Casino! Bob LaRosa and Joe Capasso made arrangements for our annual meeting, which was no easy task. To the Casino we were considered a “small group”, and they really didn’t need us to get people to come and fill the Mohegan Sun. However, I must admit the Casino did a wonderful job for the club. The nicely decorated banquet room was further spiffed up by club members with Ferrari Flags and a continuous slide show of 2003 events, put together by Tom Lassen. continued on page 14... Jennings’ Garage Tour: A Fantasy Come True - by Mike Covello Most of us have had daydreams about Ferraris for longer than we can remember. There are the initial sparks of seeing your first Ferrari. Then as the fever starts to grip you, the sparks ignite a quest for knowledge, so you dive into the ocean of enthusiasm that is Ferrari fandom. There is so much to learn about the individual idiosyncracies of the early cars, and the technological marvels of the later aluminum and carbon fiber steeds from Maranello. But what about the perfect setting for your Ferrari? Has your imagination spent fleeting seconds, or long hours contemplating the construction of your Temple of Speed? On September 14, over a hundred members and their friends were treated to a viewing of one man’s realization of the perfect setting for his Ferrari playthings. I met Bill Jennings at last year’s Vermont fall tour. Besides enjoying the company of Bill and his wife Joyce, I was fascinated by the photos he carried of his new garage. Since I 04 volume 3 issue 4 was also in the throes of construction, any tips, hints or ideas that Bill had to offer were of great interest. I’m always interested in seeing how others solve the problem of their car work and display areas. So imagine my delight to see that Christian Scott and Dennis Liu had managed to add a tour of Bill’s Ferrari Palace to the New England Region’s fall calendar. I later found out after that a few members, like Dave & Fiona Friar and Tom & Nancy Lassen had decided to make a weekend out of the event. This seemed like a good way to be in mid-state New Hampshire by 10 AM. An obligation the night before left an early morning departure as my only option. True Confessions time. A snapped throttle cable in my 1972 365 GTC/4 on my way back from Lime Rock’s Ferrari Days has left me feeling less certain about the old girl’s ability to guarantee a return trip the same day. While my July breakdown happened under the most pleasant imaginable meteorological circumstances, Sunday’s weather held a different promise. So it was with some feelings of guilt that I left the shiny C4 under its cover and embarked in the press car of the week, a VW Touareg. Our journey north was uneventful until we arrived in the charming village of Wolfsboro. Just as we were congratulating ourselves for being able to arrive on time, we came to a complete stop behind a long line of cars. As we started to move at what seemed to be a walking pace, a glance way up ahead revealed that we had managed to arrive precisely at the time that a road race was starting, and our crawl along Main Street gave me plenty of opportunity to practice that patience thing my daughter is trying to teach me. Imagine my surprise when we found Bill’s secluded driveway and realized that despite our arrival 20 minutes late, we were the first guests to arrive! We hid our non-Ferrari up behind the garage and were given a tour of Bill’s clubhouse. Steel beam construction means that the fourbay garage has no posts inside, and is wide open with no obstructions around which to maneuver. Bill’s collection of Ferraris is heavily oriented towards the track side. Yes the 250 Ferrari Club of America Photo by Fiona Friar A beautiful setting for some beautiful machines. Bill and Joyce’s home is situated on a peninsula jutting out into Lake Winnipesaukee’s. The views from the back deck are breathtaking even on this rainy and overcast day. The feast that they had provided for all attendees far outweighed - MC Photo by Fiona Friar PF Cabriolet is a marvelous streetcar, but his F50 and Enzo are race machines with only a thin veneer of civility allowing street use. One deep bay has a Modena 360 GT, a Spice-Ferrari WSC, and the ultimate Ferrari privateer racer, a 333SP. As wonderful as the line of growing exotics looked out in front of the garage, I’m sure many more frames of film and digital images were snapped of the beauties that resided inside. As the morning progressed the lines of cars on both sides of the driveway grew more impressive. All of the later Ferrari machinery was well represented; our ranks were swelled by the inclusion of Maseratis, BMWs, Porsches, an Aston Martin, and even a Lotus. A couple of delightful hours were spent wandering among this assembly of mighty muscle and chatting with friends both new and old. my expectations, and was made even tastier by the water, mountains and rolling clouds on display. After lunch the event’s co-chairs gave brief speeches and we all applauded our gracious host and hostess. Thanks to Ferrari of New England, there were even a few door prizes to be taken home by some lucky winners. All too soon, we heard the call of the open road, and in groups of twos and threes we saddled up, wandered our way out of the maze of narrow lanes and headed back to our own lives. All of us were enriched by this view of one man’s vision of a Ferrari paradise. I’d like to personally thank Bill and Joyce for their warm hospitality and splendid generosity. I hope this inspires other collectors to share their own Ferrari repositories on future events. Members enjoying a catered cook-out. J. We had been summoned by Mario Claus himself to prepare gift packages, consisting of hats and All ready to go. Mattel’s toy Ferraris. These treats would be distributed at CCMC on Thursday, December 18. Tom Altmann laid out an impressive breakfast spread to tempt us, which 08 volume 3 issue 4 it did. Unlike previous years, the CCMC “elves” all decided to fuel up before wrapping gifts. Alex and Becky Vest put the rest of us to shame by assembling the boxes while we piled up our plates! Eventually, the group rose to the task of wrapping 100 gift boxes and before long had a pile of colorful packages filling part of the restaurant. Special “thanks” go to Stanley Cohen for providing the hats, Mattel for donating the cars, Rosemary Lombardo for providing adorable stuffed dogs wearing old fashioned “pilota” hats, and my husband Dave Friar for provid- ing the gift boxes, wrap and tape. Lastly, thank you, Tom Altmann, for opening your restaurant and treating us to a delicious breakfast. As members began to leave with the first snow flakes falling, Mario Claus’ Stradale trailer (OK, it was just a pick-up truck) arrived to stow the gifts away safely until Thursday. It had been a rewarding morning, chatting with fellow members and working towards putting smiles on the faces of some CCMC patients. To cap it all off, we raised $400 through donations from Stanley Cohen, Mike Covello, Dave Friar, Pete & Rosemary Lombardo, Sal & Rosanna Neri, Fred Palmer and Charlie & Diane Vest. The holiday spirit is fast and furious at FCA-NER. -FF If you would like to send a donation to CCMC, please mail your check to Eva Wickwire at CCMC Foundation, Inc., 12 Charter Oak Place, Hartford, CT 06106. Your contributions will help develop their trauma program and is much appreciated by the staff, children and their families. Ferrari Club of America CCMC Foundation and Board Members prepare the gifts for distribution. CCMC Holiday Party - by Eva Wickwire, CCMC Foundation Inc. It was so wonderful of you all to think of the children during your busy holiday schedules by putting together the wrapping party at Hot Tomato’s and then coming to drop off the gifts at CCMC. Even though you were not able to interact with the patients in the clinics, and floors, because of the flu advisory (we had over 200 visits to the Emergency Department just on the weekend!), I hope that you can envision the joy that you brought to the kids. The Child Life staff distributed all 100 gifts to the inpatients, including Photo by Fiona Friar Ronnie Angelo - armed & ready to eat! New England Region those in intensive care. Much excitement abounded as the big mountain of presents moved down the hallways, and one by one the patients opened the beautifully wrapped packages, donned their hats, and played with their cars, and stuffed animals (thank you Rosemary!). The gorgeous cake (thank you Stan!) was delivered to the Emergency Department where the staff members were very grateful for the sweet treat in the midst of their harried day. This holiday season CCMC was home to children suffering not just from serious bouts of the flu, but also those with cancer, traumatic injuries, and other life-threatening situations. Judging from the big smile you brought to the boy in the wheelchair in the cafeteria, and to Ronnie Angelo, and the other two young boys we encountered, the holiday season holds the guarantee of a magical moment of happiness because Ronnie enjoys the gifts. of FCA/NER. Some of you may recall that Ronnie was our first patient to ride in the batteryoperated Ferrari donated to CCMC. Unfortunately, Ronnie is back in for tests to see if his cancer has recurred. Yet the simple act of opening his present and helping Stan cut the cake distracted his family and him from the anxiety of waiting for test results. And didn’t he look adorable in the hat! As always, it is my sincere pleasure to work with such a fine group of selfless, big hearted people like the members of the FCA/NER. Not only do I admire each of you as business people and philanthropists, I have come to value you as friends. I wish you and your families good health and happiness throughout the year, and ask that we all say a little prayer that Ronnie gets his Christmas wish of a healthy fresh start in life. by Eva Wickwire CCMC HOLIDAY PARTY Photo by Eva Wickwire of CCMC - EW Photo by Eva Wickwire of CCMC Winter 2003/4 09 quality motorcars and accessories A few from our current inventory: 2003 360 Spider Red/Tan F1 great options • 2002 575M Maranello Red/Tan F1 • 1991 Testarossa Red/Tan low miles 1988 Testarossa Black/Tan fully serviced • 1987 328GTS Black/Black • 1988 328 GTS Red/Tan low miles • 275 GTB/2 Wayne Carini •Sports Cars/ Exotics/ Classics P.O. The number and quality of events increased, from the kart event to the Ferrari Club polo match, as well as events in New Hampshire and Vermont in between. Also, there were viewings of the Formula 1 races and participation in Tutto Italiano at the magnificent Museum of Transportation in Brookline, Mass. Hartford Concorso Ferrari as well as the picnic for the Village for Families and Children were both magnificent - although we all had to endure a typhoon on Sunday for the Concorso. Numerous people have made our region a success. Dennis Liu with outstanding writing ability and a penchant for organization and clear communications must be recognized for his contributions to the region. The Friar duo again showed their outstanding loyalty in all things related to 12 volume 3 issue 4 our region from the handling of the events, the notices of the events, and the graphics at the various happenings. Fiona Friar must be recognized for her consistent level of performance with the region’s outstanding newsletter “Horse Tales”. This year Massachusetts member Tom Lassen will join her, and they will work together to continue the quality of the region’s newsletter. Thanks must also be given to all those who helped during the year: Bob LaRosa, as secretary of the club, and his wife, Carmela, Peter Lombardo and his wife, Rosemary, Todd Lockwood, Christian Scott, Chris Fagas, Charlie Vest, and Glenn Farrell in their roles as board members of our organization. In 2004, we look forward to experiencing once again the camaraderie of our members at forthcoming events, and also participating with the Ferrari dealerships in Connecticut (Miller MotorCars) and in Massachusetts (Ferrari of New England) in vari- ous events. In conclusion, your Co-Directors are extremely grateful to all those who have assisted in making our region so fantastic. We have had a great “ride” in 2003. Sure, there were a few bumps in the road, but men and women of goodwill have allowed our region to prosper. In 2004, we will go even further, faster, and have more fun. I can hardly wait to see the Concorso billboard on the highway in Hartford, Connecticut, and the directors are planning a gathering in Joe’s new Glastonbury, Connecticut home. - JC / SC Ferrari Club of America FERRARI CLUB Rolex, West Hartford (860) 521-3015 New England Region Glastonbury (860) 659-8510 , Oyster, Oyster Perpetual Datejust are trademarks. Our regalia chairman, Bob LaRosa did a great job on getting the scarves while Stanley ordered the beans. The Directors held a vote on the election of officers. All who currently serve were elected for a two-year term, with Tina Capasso being added to the roster as Event Co-Coordinator. Next time, folks, there will have to be a changing of the guard for the Director and Treasurer positions because National only allows officers to hold a position for two terms of two years. After the vote, I gave a brief treasurer’s report (see details on facing page). To conclude the business portion of the meeting, Dennis provided an overview of the scheduled 2004 events and I spoke briefly about Concorso 2004. New England Region Winter 2003/4 15 MYOPIA POLO by Dennis Liu A Gathering of Beautiful Horses - by Dennis Liu Who would have thought that a mere eight horsepower could be so impressive? The FCA New England Region gathered for the second weekend in a row (of four!) for a new event - a visit to the Myopia Hunt Club for some polo spectating. I’m sure that most of us own a Ralph Lauren knit shirt. But those of us who attended can finally attest that we’ve watched polo! And, yes, I bought a souvenir Myopia polo shirt (not from Ralph though). After a drenched spring of Ferrari events (we had inclement weather at every outing, I think), the fates finally shone on us. Dry, sunny, warm... perfect weather to hit the road! Over a dozen cars gathered for the morning run through the North Shore of Massachusetts. Members included Frank Martino and Michael Calvo with their wives in identical red F355 Berlinettas, Mark Shair and Eileen Feldman in his red Testarossa, Philip Schier and his daughter in his green F355 Spider, Dave & Naomi Covino and family all packed into their spiffy 308 GT/4, Fred Cohen and family in their white Tes- 16 volume 3 issue 4 tarossa (and Ford Expedition), Dan Watkins & family in their black 360 Modena (and BMW X5), and Dr. Joel and Rachel Franck in their crimson Maserati Coupe (that somehow transmogrified into a green Spyder before the end of the day). Of course, we had a Connecticut contingent consisting of Dave and Fiona Friar in a yellow F355 Spider, Jim and Maria LaRosa in a red 360 Modena and Peter & Lina Lombardo in a black 328 GTS. And roaring in with perfect timing as we were pulling out was the ever-affable Emmett Horgan in his red 360 Modena. And since we had the Principessa Charlize (tm) with us, my wife and I took the BMW sport wagon. Our drive led us through several scenic towns on the North Shore, including Manchester-Bythe-Sea, Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Ipswich and Topsfield. At the start, I lectured everyone that this would be a more low-key drive, unlike past events Photo by Fiona Friar Photo by Fiona Friar Beautiful horses gathered at the Myopia Polo Grounds. (and probably unlike the upcoming USGP drive). We started a bit slowly, held up by some tourist traffic and a drawbridge. But once we cleared Rockport, we found some nifty, narrow roads. Though, I must add, while chauffeuring my wife and daughter in the wagon, I lost sight of the Ferraris a few times - in my rear view mirror (come on people, that’s inexcusable!). We stopped for lunch at the famous and ever-so-busy Woodman’s (www.woodmans.com). Our gang sat down to a hearty repast of lobsters, fried clams, fried scallops, fried shrimp, fried onion rings, fried potatoes, and, sad to say, “fried clam strips” (they were from Connecticut, so I guess their ignorance is excusable!). After lunch, we stopped at a restored historic Federal-style mansion in Topsfield, where Frank and Kristi Martino run The Commons reception hall (www. topsfieldcommons.com), right in the Topsfield common. As we were pulling in, Peter and Pamela Rogal in their F40 LM and Jim (I’ll mangle his last name) and his wife in their 400i converged with us. Frank and Kristi welcomed us with complimentary espressos, cappuccinos, mimosas and Italian pastries. I even had a custom pastry emblazoned with “Store Ferrari”, which is a web business that Frank just set up to sell some great Ferrari accessories (www.storeferrari.com). We munched and sipped to our hearts delight, then marched off to the Myopia Hunt Club, the oldest existing polo field in the U.S., where we were given free admission and reserved parking right on the edge of the field, across from the spectator Ferrari Club of America Photo by Fiona Friar Maria LaRosa & The Principessa Charlize (Liu) present the trophies. A sample of the plate approved by the Commissioner has appeared in previous issues of our quarterly publication. Special interest plate applications are available from Stanley Cohen (fasferrari@aol. com or (860) 549-4740). The applications will cost $65 if you intend to convert your existing plate to the plate issued by the Commissioner to the FCA-NER. If you are applying for a new plate, the cost is $130. Only those persons holding Connecticut registrations, either existing or new, will be allowed to obtain special interest plates from the Department of Motor Vehicles of the State of Connecticut containing the FCA-NER logo. It is essential that you maintain any existing registration you have for plates that you wish to convert to the FCA-NER special interest plates. This means that you must complete any renewal appli- cations sent by the Motor Vehicle Department to you for your existing plate, even by Stanley Cohen though you may have filed a special interest plate application in connection with the authorized FCA-NER plates. All special interest plate applications by Connecticut residents and FCANER members must be signed by me, Stanley Cohen, to attest that the applicant is an FCA-NER member. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of the State of Connecticut has requested that we make every effort possible to send in the applications at one time. If you are interested (and eligible), please complete the special interest plate application, make out your check ($65 or $130) to “DMV” and forward both to Stanley Cohen, 39 Grand Street, Hartford, CT 06106 as soon as possible. - SC We make leasing as simple as turning the key. 47 Sherman Hill Road Woodbury, CT 06798 203-267-7700 FAX: 203-267-7773 DEALER INQUIRIES WELCOME Serving your leasing needs since 1978 Visit our Website at www.WhyNotLease.com New England Region Winter 2003/4 19 20 volume 3 issue 4 Ferrari Club of America by Fiona Friar On the Fast Track at the Village for Families & Children - by Fiona Friar On Concorso weekend 2003, the New England Region descended on the beautiful campus of the Village for Families & Children (VFC) on the outskirts of Hartford. For the second consecutive year, it was our honor to meet and entertain the children visiting and living at VFC. Many of these kids suffer from behavioral problems or are pulled from their homes due to domestic violence. The FCA/NER learned of their plight from Events Chair Pete Lombardo and his wife, Rosemary (a VFC volunteer who organizes charitable events for this great organization). Rosemary asked the FCA/NER Board to make VFC a secondary beneficiary of the funds raised by the Hartford Concorso Ferrari event and that we allow the kids a chance to participate. Without hesitation, the Board approved this idea. Thus, on a mild spring Saturday, New England Region over 30 members drove, procession style, onto the VFC campus to the sound of the kids excitedly chanting a welcome cheer they had created especially for us. Drivers, kids and families were all provided with a picnic spread donated - and served - by the Subway franchise of Franklin Avenue in Hartford. The Subway crew even showed up in a customized PT Cruiser that some of the kids liked more than the Ferraris parked in the lot! Our huge thanks go out to Kent Oppel and Paul Robinson of Subway for their time and contributions! After lunch, the time had come to start up those engines and take the kids for a spin. As with last year, the kids’ smiles grew wider as the cars went faster on the loop around the campus. The line of kids waiting for rides seemed endless. As the passengers disembarked they were given gifts of Hot Wheels cars, mini radios and candy, which kept them happily occupied while other children were taking their places in the “race”. Eventually, the kids were satisfied and it was time to leave so we could ON THE FAST TRACK Photo by Fiona Friar prepare for the other Concorso weekend festivities. It had been a rewarding experience to add a little Ferrari spirit to the lives of the VFC children. - FF We encourage our members to make additional donations to the Village for Families and Children. Your contributions will go a long way towards their programs which help children who have suffered from abuse, neglect or violence, and who may be experiencing emotional, behavioral, psychological and/or learning problems. A respected leader among community organizations, they have forged dynamic partnerships and cooperative programs to serve families and children throughout the Greater Hartford region. This agency is also a nationally-recognized research and training center in the field of family and children’s services. They can be reached at (860) 236-4511 or by visiting their website at www.villageforchildren.org. Winter 2003/4 21 BOOK REVIEW – by Stanley Cohen From February 14, 1959, until August 15, 1988, Franco Gozzi was the personal secretary to Enzo Ferrari. In a 233page book, entitled “Memoirs of Enzo Ferrari’s Lieutenant”, Mr. Gozzi has related to the reader the events that transpired while Franco Gozzi remained at the side of the “Commendatore.” The book, which is published in Italy, comes in an English version with a preface by the son of Enzo Ferrari. Piero Ferrari summarizes Mr. Gozzi’s book as: “a combination of observations of life in the history of Ferrari recounted with intelligent humour and great sagacity.” The book is replete with numerous pictures, including many color pictures. Several of the pictures are represented as being published for the first time. Mr. Gozzi relates many interesting incidents that he witnessed while serving as Enzo Ferrari’s personal secretary. Many of the stories revolve around famous personalities who visited the Ferrari factory. Often, Enzo Ferrari would insist upon personally accompanying the famous individual throughout the tour. One such visitor was Adelai Stevenson, who many will remember as a democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Enzo Ferrari conducted Mr. Stevenson on a long and detailed tour of the Ferrari factory. At the conclusion of the tour, Mr. Stevenson turned to his guide and thanked him and asked him to convey his personal thanks to Mr. Ferrari. There are numerous chapters dealing with Enzo Ferrari’s relationship with the individuals who drove his racing cars. Also, several chapters are devoted to Mr. Ferrari’s relationship with Luigi Chinetti, the original importer of Ferraris to America. It was Mr. Chinetti who convinced Enzo Ferrari to bring the Ferrari sports cars to America. “The future is here, Ferrari, you must believe that here sports cars will be a goldmine, there is a hunger for motor sport, the market is virgin, there is plenty of money, the potential is immense”. It would seem that Mr. Chinetti knew what he was talking 22 volume 3 issue 4 about when he made those remarks in 1952 to Enzo Ferrari. A chapter is devoted to an American who drove for Enzo Ferrari. Mike Hawthorn is referred to as an eccentric young man but an inconsistent driver. According to Mr. Gozzi, Hawthorn even wore his bow tie when racing. In relating Ferrari’s opinion of the drivers, there are chapters dealing with Gecky Icks, Oliver Grendebiren, Lucien Bianchi. Nuvolari is mentioned as well other drivers all the way up to the era of Alain Prost Gozzi. Also discussed is Ferrari’s opinion of the drivers for other teams such as Ayrton Senna. Enzo Ferrari took a liking to Gilles Villeneuve. No one was allowed to criticize Gilles. In fact, after the Grand Prix of Japan, Villeneuve was involved in a massive accident that resulted in the death of two marshals and the destruction of his car. Regardless, no one was allowed to make a derogatory comment concerning Villeneuve’s style of driving. After the death of Enzo Ferrari, Franco Gozzi continued to function as a press secretary for the Ferrari factory and the racing team. Mr. Gozzi offers his personal opinion as to such drivers as Albereto and Schumacher. In one chapter dealing with “the last meeting”, Franco Gozzi talks about his last meeting with Enzo Ferrari. On June 27, 1988, Enzo Ferrari came to his office for the last time. “It was hot, but he had put on an overcoat. He stayed for a couple hours and we talked for a long time about Postlethwaite who was leaving Ferrari for Tyrrell. Safe journey, he concluded, but is also the fault of that dawdler Bernard, who left him no room.” On July 25, 1998, Enzo Ferrari paid his last visit to the racing department. Twenty-one days later, Enzo Ferrari was dead. “Memoirs of Enzo Ferrari’s Lieutenant” contains seventy stories dealing with the cars, the drivers, and the famous personalities associated with Ferrari over the years. In 1995, two years after having been appointed assistant to President Luca di Montezemolo, Franco Gozzi retired. This reviewer feels that “Memoirs of Enzo Ferrari’s Lieutenant” by Franco Gozzi would make a fine addition to the library of any Ferrari enthusiast. Mr. Gozzi has a straightforward way of writing, and he weaves a little bit of humor throughout the book. In describing the visit of Elizabeth Taylor to the Ferrari pits in Monaco in 1974, he refers to “a beautiful face, fabulous eyes, not tall, full and rounded under a dress held casually together by a generously loosened white coat, her plunging neckline went down almost to her belly button”. Ms. Taylor signed autographs for the mechanics and participated in numerous toasts with Lambrusco. Mr. Gozzi then goes on to say: “The mechanics were euphoric, they didn’t want to let her go and the pose for the photograph was animated by embraces and handfuls which, in the exaltation of the moment-I had a good view-multiplied into a joyous and tumultuous crescendo.” Gozzi adds, when he is in front of the Supreme Judge and is asked what he did in life, “nothing, all powerful Father, I will have to reply with my head hanging down, I wasn’t even able to grab Liz Taylor’s ***”. Although there are numerous other stories I could relate, I feel the reader would enjoy the various tales better by reading the book. It is only by reading Mr. Gozzi’s memoirs that you will learn about Albert Ascari’s superstition of cleaning his shoes and filing the point of the soles before getting into his race car or about the driver who refused to race if he saw a nun when traveling to a circuit. The story of the driver who is so tall that a “little cupola” had to be built in the roof of his sports car and how Enzo Ferrari personally supervised the menus at every luncheon or dinner held to honor the team along with the accomplishments of the world’s greatest race team or how the factory introduced the Testarossa at the Lido in Paris are best read from Mr. Gozzi’s words. - SC Ferrari Club of America Welcome New Members!
