Last year the proceeds were awarded to six nonprofit organizations. Here is what two of them had to say about the grants. Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico Jerrald J. The $7,000 grant we received was helpful in providing critical financial assistance to families whose children are battling cancer in New Mexico. Albuquerque has the only cancer treatment centers for children in the Sate of New Mexico. No matter where a child is diagnosed or lives, children in New Mexico must travel to Albuquerque for treatments. Clinic visits and overnight stays are continually required by families already emotionally and financially burdened by this terrible disease. Many families face choosing between paying utility bills or paying for their child’s treatment. Some families even face bankruptcy or foreclosure. The Transitional Living Program (TLP) apartments that are attached to the LSA are now full which means 6 young people are no longer homeless and have the support of New Day to help guide them into adulthood. We are also proud to announce that this summer we had our very first TLP graduate: Christian is an exeptional young woman who has been attending CNM for the past year and plans to transfer to UNM in 2015 to achieve a double major and Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Communications. During the epic 1988 season, Team Principal Ron Dennis and Technical Director Gordon Murray began thinking about the idea of a McLaren road car. In 1993 the influential McLaren F1 was launched. Two years later, the F1 GTR dominated at Le Mans, turning the greatest supercar of its generation into the most successful British race car of modern times. McLaren then pioneered the carbon monocoque in the McLaren F1, it took 3,000 hours to make each carbon fiber chassis. It now takes just four hours to create the carbon MonoCell of the 12C. The McLaren 650S is the featured car at Concours du Soleil this year. The exotic supercar was announced in February 2014 as a new model, but based on the existing McLaren MP4-12C with 25% new parts. Formally unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the 650S gets its name from the power output of its turbocharged M838T engine which produces 650PS or 641 bhp. The ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, emphasizing the focus on handling, transmission, drivability and engagement. The 650S shares the MP4-12C’s carbon fiber composite chassis, and is powered by the same McLaren M838T 3.8-litre V8, twin-turbo engine, but now developing 641 bhp and 500 lb/ft of torque. Power is transmitted to the wheels through a seven-speed near instantaneous shift dual clutch gearbox. With a top speed of 207 mph, the 650S and can accelerate from 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds and 0-100 mph in 5.7 seconds. Owner: Robert Phillips Designed to compete in the up to two-liter class, this car was painted French Racing Blue for the original owner, Francois Picard, who took delivery in May 1955. In November, as a Ferrari team entry, this car won its class at the 1st Gran Prix of Venezuela driven by Eugenio Castellotti and Harry Schell. One month later, the car went on to class wins in two races at Nassau driven by Porfirio Rubirosa and Ebby Lunken. It was the first Series II car imported into the US and quickly garnered another class win at the March 1956, 12 Hours of Sebring driven by Porfirio Rubirosa and Jim Pauley. Following a complete restoration begun in 2000, it was adjudged a 100 point car, winning its class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2008, and was awarded the Enzo Ferrari Trophy by Piero Ferrari for the Best Ferrari in the field at Pebble Beach. In fifteen meets, the car has been awarded 28 trophies. It is one of three remaining with an original motor of the original eight made. Goes from 0–100 mph in 5.7 seconds. This car will only be shown at the Sunday Public Show. 10 11 Ferrari 1958 FERRARI 250 GT PF SERIES 1 CABRIOLET Ferrari 1969 FERRARI 365 GT 2+2 Owner: Jerry Roehl One of only 40 ever built. This car was the showcar at the Geneva Salon in 1958. Only one with this type of rear bumper. This car was shown by invitation at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in 2007. 1966 FERRARI 275 GTB LONGNOSE TORQUE TUBE Owner: Bob Friggens This Ferrari 275 GTB Long nose Torque tube is one of the only 88 Ferrari 275 GTB long nose steel with 3 carburettors built. Owners: Alberto and Julie Gutierrez Engine Specs: 320 bhp, 4,390 cc overhead cam V-12 engine, five-speed manual transmission, independent front and rear suspension. Total Production Run 809 cars 68-71. The 4.4-liter single overhead camshaft V-12 engine was fitted with three Weber carburetors and produced 320 horsepower. Such performance was combined with a luxurious interior to make a most impressive grand tourer. Plush leather, luxurious veneered trim panels, the last wood-rimmed steering wheel in a production Ferrari, air conditioning, a stereo, and standard power windows completed the interior appointments. 1972 FERRARI 365GTC/4 Owner: Earl Whittemore 3.65 liter engine. This incredible Ferrari 365 is one of only 500 total “C4” built. The 1971-1972 365 GTC/4 shared the same chassis and engine block as the 365 GTB/4 Daytona 12 13 Ferrari Ferrari 1974 FERRARI 246GTS 1990 FERRARI F40 Owner: Mike Houx The Ferrari 246 GTS, also known as a Dino Spyder, honored Enzo Ferrari’s late son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, who died in his early twenties. Ferrari designated this model to have a fewer than 12 cylinders. There were 1,274 Dino Spyders produced from 1972 to 1974. In 1974, 313 Dino Spyders were produced, of which this car is one of the last built and one of the very few with factory specified Ferrari Black exterior. Owner: Jerry Roehl 478 horsepower at about 2400 pounds. With a 3-liter, 8-cylinder engine with twin turbos, this car goes 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top-end speed of 208 mph. Ferrari made 1315 F40’s and 202 for the U.S. market. These cars have become highly-collectible. A Ferrari dealer in Monterey, California made a deal to have the second Ferrari ever exported to the U.S. shipped to him in Monterey so that it could be auctioned the day before the Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance. The bidding ended with Jerry J. Moore of Houston, then the No.1 car collector in the world with 832 cars. Mr. Moore traded six new Ferrari Testarossas and paid $500,000 for this car on August 18, 1990. Known as the “Pebble Beach F40” due to the circumstances surrounding its purchase. 1979 FERRARI 308 GT4 Owner: Ed Brown Rosso Corsa over tan, USA factory sunroof car. The car had the honor of being featured in an article in the February 2014 issue of Forza magazine. This car had only one gorgeous take-apart repaint, by Steve Haney, and is in excellent condition. 14 1997 FERRARI F355 SPYDER Owner: Wallace Bow The 355 moved performance to a new level with a 3.5-liter V8 featuring titanium rods, five-valve cylinder heads, and a 180-degree crankshaft producing 380HP. 0–60 in 4.9 seconds. Top speed: 183 mph. 15 Ferrari 1999 FERRARI 360 MODENA F1 Ferrari 2005 FERRARI F430 COUPE Owner: Jerry Roehl The 360 replaced the Ferrari F355 and due to the popularity of this car, Ferrari produced 8800 of them. The 3.6l V8 engine produces 400HP. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Top speed: 186 mph. 2003 FERRARI 360 MODENA COUPE Owners: Alberto and Julie Gutierrez F131 mid engine 3.6 litre V8, flat plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods generating 400 bhp and 0-60 in 4.2sec. Top speed 189 mph. F1 electrohydraulic 6spd transmission. Pininfarina alum body. Unique and rare factory paint color, interior combination of Rosso Fiorina and cream leather with burgundy piping Owner: Jorge Wernly The F430 was introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the 360 Modena. As an evolutionary model all the major concepts of the predecessor were carried over and perfected: all aluminum construction, sophisticated wind-tunnel design, mid-mounted high revving V-8 engine, and F1 transmission. The biggest change appeared in the engine bay with an all-new 4.3 litter normally aspirated V8 that produces 490 horsepower and 343 lb-ft of torque. This engine which produces 114 hp/liter of displacement launches the F430 from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds and on to a top speed of 196 mph. 2006 FERRARI F430 SPIDER Owner: Evan Schuster Stock 4.3L V8. Color is charcoal over black Daytona seats, red calipers. Factory wheels. 2004 FERRARI 360 MODENA Owner: Darrell Ratchner 3.6 Liter DOHC 5 Valve per cylinder. 400 HP F1 6 Speed Transaxle. Chrome Challenge Wheels, Capristo Stage 3 Exhaust 16 2008 FERRARI F430 COUPE Owner: Doug Morgan 4.3 liter V-8. 487 HP @8800 RPMs 17 Ferrari 2008 FERRARI 430 SCUDERIA Owner: Anonymous The Ferrari 430 Scuderia accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 202 miles per hour. Ferrari claims that around their test track, Fiorano Circuit, it matches the Ferrari Enzo, and the Ferrari F430’s successor, the Ferrari 458. 2013 FERRARI 458 ITALIA Owner: Jason Harrington Direct-injected 4.5-liter V8 cranks out 562 horsepower at 9,000 rpm (125 horsepower per liter, a record for naturally-aspirated piston engines). Torque is rated at 398 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm, 80 percent of which is available from 3,250 rpm. Maximum speed 202 mph. Only five minutes in length, the 1903 silent film Runaway Match is said to be the first car-centric movie ever made. The following years brought moviegoers everything from the Keystone Cops’ zany car chases through the Hollywood Hills (1912) and Laurel and Hardy disassembling a line of cars out of frustration during in a traffic jam in Two Tars (1928), to mobsters riding on running boards with Tommy guns blazing in 1930’s mobster movies and the Joads’ Hudson sedan taking them West to escape the Great Depression in The Grapes of Wrath (1940). In the 1950’s, the post-war baby boom produced a generation with enough income to buy their own cars. These cars became much more than just transportation, but rather a lifestyle. Cars began to consume American culture, not just the local drive-ins, but entertainment as well. Cars became the stars of the movie, were the leads in television shows and songs about them rocketed to the top of the charts. Cars had taken over Hollywood. In fact three movies in which cars played a prominent role had won Academy Awards for Best Picture, The French Connection (1971), Rain Man (1988) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989). Ever since, car culture has been a major niche in America and Hollywood. Whether it’s the main character racing through a car chase or the hottest movie star cruising Sunset Boulevard in the newest Lamborghini, cars will forever have an awe-inspiring association with Hollywood. Thus, the Hollywood category. Movie and movie star cars have been placed in this category to reflect the types of cars used in movies and bring to mind the image of your favorite actor driving through Hollywood. 24 Of course there are a fair number of cherished car-related movies, here are just a few • • • • • • • • • • • The Absent-Minded Professor (1961); a 1914 Ford Model T flies after being “Flubberized” by Fred MacMurray. American Graffitti (1973); George Lucas’ cinematic ode to 1950’s cars and cruising. Cars (2006); Pixar’s vehicular tour de force that somehow lost the Animated Feature Film award to the anemic Happy Feet. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968); one of the few movies with a car as its central character, in this case a 1910 Grand Prix racer that’s been reinvented with extraordinary powers. Days of Thunder (1990); the NASCAR racing alternative to Top Gun, likewise starring Tom Cruise. Easy Rider (1969); with motorcycles standing in for cars, this is the road picture that made fringed leather jackets cool and a star out of Jack Nicholson. Ghostbusters (1984); a converted 1959 Cadillac ambulance shares screen time as the “Ectomobile” alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Rebel Without A Cause (1955); James Dean tore up the screen in a 1949 Mercury Coupe, but never lived to see the release of what would become his signature film. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977); the James Bond film in which Roger Moore drives a Lotus Esprit that doubles as a compact submarine. Transformers (2007) and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (2009): the Bumble Bee Chevy Camaro almost makes a better robot than a car. Car has been on Hollywood’s Top 10 Cars (Reelz Channel) and has had Movie and TV show Celebs take photos in the car. 2004 ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH Owners: Alberto and Julie Gutierrez This Aston Martin Vanquish is identical to the one featured in the 2002 James Bond film, Die Another Day. While it does not have the vanishing feature which everyone remembers from the movie, this has been upgraded to full Vanquish S specifications which include a substantial upgrade in handling and suspension. This combined with the 48-valve 60° engine which produces 450 bhp and 400 lb•ft of torque significantly improves the performance of the car. It is controlled by a drive-by-wire throttle and a six-speed electrohydraulic manual transmission. In addition to its movie debut in appearance in the Die Another Day, this fantastic supercar earned the number three spot on the list of Best Film Cars Ever, along with the number one film car, the Aston Martin DB5 which starred in Goldfinger. This car also appears in several video games including Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and James Bond 007: Nightfire. 26 1985 ROLLS ROYCE CORNICHE Owner: Lyle Ferrell Last of the coach built Rolls Royce’s. Coachwork by Mulliner-Park Ward. Each car took 6 months to build. Custom equipped w/Silver drinks flasks & Tudor Crystal nip glasses. This Rolls Royce has been seen in many movies and television shows including Ocean’s Eleven, CSI: Miami and Columbo. 27 Hollywood Cars 2007 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT Hollywood Cars 1962 JAGUAR E-TYPE Owner:Jack Vigil The Continental GT is Bentley’s high-performance coupe and the first model to come out of Bentley Motor Cars, Ltd., the new company that was formed on September 17, 2002, ending a 70- year partnership with Rolls-Royce. This car has been seen in many movies and television shows including Las Vegas and Gumball Run 3000. 2013 BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT SPEED LE MANS EDITION Owner: Jerry Roehl The E-Type was first introduced at the Geneva Salon in 1961. Before it was purchased at the RM Auction during the Pebble Beach weekend in 2004 by it’s current owner, it was a second-place finisher at the Jaguar Club of North America National Meet in 2002. This car is the same model driven by Peter O’Toole in “How To Steal A Million” and other films. 1974 JAGUAR E-TYPE Owner: Jerry Roehl The 1974 E-Type V-12 represents the last full year of production of all models of the E-Type. This particular car was a National Concours Winner at the Jaguar Club of North America National Meet in 2005. It was just recently shown by invitation at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 19th, 2011. This car was driven by Ali McGraw in “Convoy”. Owner: Alberto and Julie Gutierrez Powered by the unique 6.0-liter W-12 engine that produces 616 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, this Continental GT reaches 60 mph in 4 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. This model has a unique Le Mans Edition numbered badge, clock face, embroidered badge to each headrest, tread plates with the limited edition name and unique wheels. The first version was inspired by Bentley Le Mans winner Tim Birkin and comes painted in Glacier White combined with a Beluga interior trim. 1927 MARMON E-75 SPEEDSTER Owner: Ed Boice The coach-built body was designed by E H Wilson of Moline, Illinois. The Marmon Company built the engine and chassis in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1927. The car is powered by six cylinders with twin inline heads, dual ignition, overhead valves and aluminum crankcase. The engine develops 74 HP. This 902 Opera Coupe is a fine example of J. W Packard’s business model. She is powered by 319.2 CI Straight 8, 110 hp. With a three speed transmission with overdrive. Weighing in at 4505 lbs. she can achieve a top speed of 100 mph. The “sticker” price new was $2,795.00. The Hornet was also built by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and marketed under the Hudson brand between 1955 and 1957. The first-generation Hudson Hornets featured a functional “step-down” design with dropped floorpan and a chassis with a lower center of gravity than contemporary vehicles that helped the car handle well – a bonus for racing. The Hornet’s lower and sleeker look was accented by streamlined styling. This car also plays the role of Doc Hudson in the animated movie “Cars”. Voiced by Paul Newman, he not only serves as the town judge, he’s also Radiator Springs’ resident doctor. YouthSparks Digi Camp, August 2014 2014 Grants As local business owners interested in the success of the Greater Albuquerque community, we are focusing our grantmaking on Community and Workforce Development. We believe it is our responsibility to help grow business and provide opportunities for residents. To achieve that, we looked for result-oriented opportunities educating the next generation so they are well equipped to find gainful employment. With those goals in mind, we have selected the following education programs to receive grants: 1. Microsoft YouthSparks Camps-launched in August of 2014, camps are preparing middle school students for the technology based jobs of the future. 2. A New Day Youth & Family Services to provide a home to homeless youth while learning vital life-skills guiding them to a productive adulthood. 3. UNM’s Lobo MotorSports for the Formula SAE race car program 4. UNM’s Law School for need based scholarships. 1997 Concours du Soleil began as an informal gathering of the New Mexico Viper Club displaying cars at a residence in Albuquerque’s northeast heights. It quickly grew attracting more owners and a bigger audience each year. 2007-2009 The Albuquerque Community Foundation is asked to take over the planning of the event. The Cinco Amigos Fund is established. Each year the weekend mirrored the previous year, a 2-day weekend in Los Ranchos. $100,000 in grants have been awarded through the Foundation The Cinco Amigos Endowment Fund grows to $90,000. 2004 A “test-drive”. Organizers staged an informal Concours which proved to be a wonderful weekend. Everyone decided it was a good idea and ventured to plan something on a bigger scale and Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation agreed to be the beneficiary for the following year. 2011-2013 A road rally was added to incorporate a Friday event. Drivers were led by a police escort from Mercedes Benz of Albuquerque to the Napa Speedway west of Albuquerque where the rally was held. Although the rally was fun for everyone involved, the money raised was not worth the time and effort to plan so it was not continued. 2005-2006 Organized by Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation, the first Concours du Soleil was held at its current location in Los Ranchos. It encompassed a Saturday night gala and Sunday public show. Carrie Tingley would organize the show for two years when a conflicting fundraising event would preclude them from participating in 2007. All proceeds were donated to Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation. 2014 In an effort to raise more funds for the Albuquerque community, the organizers have incorporated a Friday night crowdfunding event. Funding from this event will benefit the Microsoft YouthSparks Digi Camp, an innovative project aimed at educating future generations in job-rich, high paying technology jobs.
