FRONTIER ADVERTISER 541-536-2434 PROOF COPY Your “la pine rocks!” Chamber Connection “We are the hub of the business community, promoting commerce and tourism making La Pine a vibrant community to work, live and play!” St. vincent de paul Arlene Mura, Director Arlene Mura, Director, started her work with St. Vincent De Paul in August of 1984, four months after it opened, and has been managing it ever since. The first Thrift Store was located in the little house that sits behind El Caporal on Highway 97. They outgrew it within a few years and moved to their current location. Now, Jerry Crosby, Arlene Mura, Joy Croker after 14 years in the present location, St. Vincent is looking to expand. The plans are to build a 12,000 sq. ft. facility within 16-18 months and locate it near the Senior Center. They will be able to sell unfinished furniture and appliances. The present location is for sale, but does not have to sell in order to relocate. Jerry Crosby lives in La Pine and has been with the non-profit organization for over five years. He moved here from Eugene, as a step toward retirement. Jerry has a real heart for people. He started out as a volunteer and was quickly recruited to serve as Social Services Director and seems to really enjoy helping those in the area who need it. They give out 300 boxes of food per month. In the past years they have assisted people with their utilities, rent and medical expenses in an amount of over $40,000. Joy Croker is Thrift Store Manager. She moved to La Pine from Beaverton in 1993, looking to retire here. She was soon volunteering at St. Vincent and has been managing the store for eight years. She says, “Everyone starts as a volunteer and many have become employees. A lot of people don’t realize the economic impact we have on La Pine. We have a staff of 11 part time people plus 11 volunteers.” The whole purpose of St. Vincent De Paul is to help those in need. They accept donations from 10am-4pm Monday thru Saturday. It is best to call first, though. They also have attended donation sites at the St. Francis School on 27th in Bend on Mondays and on Cottonwood in Sunriver on Thursdays, from 10am-2:30pm. All the donations that come in stay local. A lot of people don’t know they are autonomous. It is non-denominational, not connected to any church, but is part of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Wilderness Garbage donates their time and trucks to carry any unusable clothing to a “Bundling Center” for recycling, making this a “Green” organization. They will schedule to pick up donations from elderly people or large-sized items. Stop by the Thrift Store and you will see why St. Vincent De Paul has had over 7600 visits since last December. The stock is clean and attractively displayed - great place to shop in La Pine. It’s full of friendly staff who are ready to help you, whether to buy something special or to accept your donation of goods or money. She never wanted another gloomy, dreary day, and surely not move back to Oregon! Well, never say never! With the passing of time, parents and husband, she knew family was the glue that held the key to happiness. Linda Maggard The idea of “CrossRhoades” was born in 2003. During a stay at Sunriver, with her brother and sisters, it was suggested that the siblings should purchase retirement property in Sunny Central Oregon. Linda says, “We were fortunate enough to find beautiful acreage in La Pine. We started to share our vision of inviting friends and family to come and take a rest from the busy world. We have another brother and sister that still live in the Willamette Valley and we think they will eventually join us. It really is all about family”. They’ve found how much they love the people of La Pine and have a heart to help and be a part of the exciting ‘New City’. “The CrossRhoades Gang” has become involved in many local events; Randy, Sandy, Karen and Linda all volunteer time at the Senior Center. Randy is the President of the High Lakes Car Club and Chaplain of the La Pine Grange. Karen has renewed her floral design business so that she can do arrangements for Senior Center events. Randy is involved in the process of starting up a powder-coating business. Sandy enjoys meeting the people of La Pine through her job at the La Pine Community Health Center. Linda has also started Cross Rhoades Fine Chocolates from her certified home kitchen. Linda also accepted an appointment to the City of La Pine Planning Commission. (She previously served as City Councilor). Linda loves cooking and is part of the Flame-On Catering Team at the Senior Center. They cater the Chamber Breakfast each month.
