Field Day deserved three pages of pictures and information. I may still use some of the other pictures next month. We were very fortunate to get some video from the Quadcopter that attended Field Day. It can be seen on Youtube at https://youtu.be/DJWxRr_kdVo The link just worked for me, hopefully it will work for you. I hope you had as much fun this month in Ham radio as I did! See you at the club meeting this Monday. 73, Steven Lundgren, KE5BTS July Fourth at Firewheel Center ............................ 12 1 From the President – August, 2015 Our summer activities have come to a conclusion. If you were able to visit HAMCOM, participate in 2015 Field Day, and/or were a volunteer at the Fire Wheel Star Spangled Spectacular, I hope you enjoyed those activities. I was involved in one way or another with all three and have not recovered yet. But I had a great time and met and visited with a lot of great folks. Special thanks to Bob Owens, who led the food service at Field Day. James Bond and Ralph Brown did another great job in planning and organizing Field Day. This year we will present award certificates for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the most contacts for Phone, CW, and Digital. James Bond will make the presentations. Mike Thomas, NA5U, will make a presentation of the KP1_5 DXposition at the July 27th Club meeting. This is one you don’t want to miss. Thanks, Jim, W5DTG 2 Board Members James Stafford, W5DTG – President (president@k5qhd.org) Steven Lundgren, KE5BTS – ARCLITE Editor (newsletter@k5qhd.org) Ralph Brown, K5WRB – Communications Officer (communications @k5qhd.org) ELECTED MARCH 23, 2015 GARC Officers for 2015: James Stafford, W5DTG – President (president@k5qhd.org) Bill Engel, K5DHY – Vice President (vp@k5qhd.org) Lowell Allen, KD5RFD – Secretary (secretary@k5qhd.org) Randy Brack, N5MRB – Treasurer (treasurer@k5qhd.org) Ralph Brown, K5WRB – Communications Officer (communications@k5qhd.org) John Abbott, KF5FWK – Education Officer (education@k5qhd.org) Steven Lundgren, KE5BTS – ARCLITE Editor (newsletter@k5qhd.org) Contact the Entire Board: board@k5qhd.org Other club contacts you may want to reach include: Bob Jones, W5BJ – Trustee (trustee@k5qhd.org) Herman May, KE5HYW – Webmaster (webmaster@k5qhd.org) 3 Tower of the Month August 2015 GARLAND AMATEUR RADIO CLUB EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTER 1027 AUSTIN STREET SUITE B GARLAND, TX 75040-5608 972-272-4499 K5QHD Garland Amateur Radio Club “Where Amateur Radio is Fun Again” K5QHD is the Bill Folsdtadt Memorial Station 4 Miscellaneous Information This month’s tower picture is the home of our new UHF repeater antenna. Here is the web address of the GARC website: http://www.k5qhd.org. You can find news about upcoming meetings and events. We have made some changes to make it easier to find the ARCLITE on the website. If you are aware of any broken links, let us know so we can fix them or remove them. There are many useful links to other sites of interest. The Garland Amateur Radio Club Information Net transmits every Thursday night at 8 p.m. local time. The script is easy to read. It is fun to control the flow of the check-ins. The only tricky part is hearing and writing down the call signs and the names. Please email KE5BTS@arrl.net and you too can have a turn at Net Control. “Phone Fray” — New SSB Contest A new 30 minute contest has been developed with the notion of enticing newcomers to Ham Radio or contesting, others who want to hone their operating skills or test out stations and others who need to add more States for awards. Here’s a summary of the announcement from the creators ... It's called Phone Fray. The start date is Tuesday (evening) July 28 (July 29 UTC). To accommodate busy schedules, the contest lasts for just 30-minutes and will be great for fast-paced NAQP practice and welcoming new contesters of all skill levels. 100 watts max makes everyone loud! No logs, just report scores to 3830scores.com. The schedule is every Wednesday, 0230-0300 UTC (which is Tuesday night from 9:30 to 10:00 p.m. Central Daylight Saving Time). The “Phone Fray” is planned to operate every Tuesday throughout the year and offers a challenge for personal operating improvement. You might only work one station the first Tuesday. Set a goal to double that the following week. Good operators will probably achieve 30 QSOs in the 30 minutes. Experienced ops may be able to hit 90 or 100. But, don’t let that intimidate you. Use this late night contest as a learning opportunity. If you’re new to contesting, you’ll learn how to score your results and a few things about reporting your score on-line. The rules for this new weekly SSB event, based on the North American QSO Party (NAQP), are located here: http://www.perluma.com/Phone_Fray_Contest_Rules.pdf Exchange: Name and State/Province/NA_Country A free Yahoo Group reflector has been formed for Phone Fray communications and please consider joining in the fun using the following link: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/PhoneFray/info If this link does not work, send me a note and I will send you a direct invitation to join the group. Any questions, please send me a note any time. Thanks! 73, Dean, NW2K nw2k@arrl.net (DEAN FAKLIS) — contributed by Frank Krizan, K5HS (ex KR1ZAN) 5 Minutes June 22, 2015 Club Meeting The meeting was called to order by Jim Stafford W5DTG with the Pledge of Allegiance. Selfintroductions were made by 25 members and guests plus all 7 of our officers. The Treasurer’s report was presented and the minutes were approved as printed in the ARCLITE. Ralph reported on the conversion of our two generators to allow the use of propane and how nice it is to not have the diesel fuel tank in the antenna trailer sloshing around. John will be presenting a General Class as soon as the new books come in. We voted in four new members; Randy Jennings KF5LKL, J. B. Jordan N5EWS, Jim McGhee N5FZT and Gary Snowden AF5XZ. James Bond went over the assignments and details for Field Day. There was also a plea for workers for the Star Spangled Spectacular at Firewheel Town Center. After the break, Bill Engel showed a video on the logistics of the 2014 World Radiosports Team Championship (WRTC) where the best DXers are invited to participate in a “level field” competition using identical antennas and basically the same location. 59 teams converged on sites near Boston, MA last year to compete. We broke up just after 9 PM. July 13, 2015 Board Meeting The meeting was attended by all of our board members except Steven. Randy presented the changes to the By-Laws that would be needed to bring the Fiscal Year into better accord with the Board elections. Lowell then requested a review of the By-Laws to make sure there were no other areas that might need updating. Randy accepted the challenge again to do the research and will bring back to the board any other needed changes. The board also voted to accept a suggestion from Randy to begin putting the proceeds from the I-sign program into the General Fund (instead of the Repeater Fund) in order to secure proper funding for our activities. The Repeater Fund will now only be supported by the proceeds from the Equipment Disposal Committee efforts and by donations made specifically for that purpose. We approved $134.76 to be spent for General Class manuals to support John’s next class starting July 21. The fire extinguisher on the antenna trailer needs to be recertified and a protective cover made for it. We discussed participating in the Labor Day Parade with an entry this year but decided we did not have the manpower nor the presentations to provide an adequate entry. That decision was validated since the city and the parade organizers have asked us to help provide communications for the parade this year, another vote of confidence for GARC. Contact John Galvin N5TIM @ arrl.net if you can help on the morning of September 7th. Respectfully Submitted, Lowell Allen, Jr. KD5RFD 6 Crony Lunch – June 25, 2015 7 Field Day June 27 and 28, 2015 From: James Bond Date: Jul 4, 2015 11:59:34 AM Subject: Final Field Day Results Results are better than last year 2014 points were 3,230., 2015 points are 3,332 Top three operators are per mode: 292 contacts CW, ALL by KF9AS, Megan 53 contacts digital , N5JDT Dr. Willis 27, W5DTG Emma 10, KF5TOU me 7. 321 contacts phone, K5DHY, Bill, 151; N5JDT, Dr. Willis, 53; KC5QHH, Randy, 39 Here’s a Youtube of the drone flying the wire loop: https://youtu.be/DJWxRr_kdVo 8 Field Day June 27 and 28, 2015 (Continued 1) Awesome Arial Photography! 9 Field Day June 27 and 28, 2015 (Continued 2) 10 Crony Lunch – July 2, 2015 11 July Fourth at Firewheel Center Thanks to all the following 32 radio amateurs.
