Haddonfield NJ 08033 WJRC Page 1 Minutes of the West Jersey R/C Club March 9, 2010 The meeting was called to order by the President at 8:25pm with 41 members and prospective members in attendance. The minutes of the January meeting were read and accepted by all. There was not a meeting in February due to bad weather so minutes were not taken. Bob Lanard gave the treasurer’s report and all members in attendance accepted the report as presented. Jim Grant brought up concern about the checking account having a service charge when not used. There was mention about possibly switching to another bank that doesn’t charge a fee. Bob Lanard had looked into TD Bank but decided to stay with Bank of America. A suggestion was made to use the card for gas and supplies when needed to eliminate the surcharge. A roll of prospective members was called; Darren Buseman attended his third meeting and was accepted into the club. Mike Simmons and Donald Chase attended their second meeting. Robert Aleardi, George Van Wagner, Bill Faust, Reggie Showers and Joseph DiMeo all attended their first meeting. Don reported that the field needs a lot of work. The runway is usable and the grass has a lot of ruts in it. Steve and Paul brought in information on a pull behind grader that could be used for the runway as well as the roads. A motion was made and passed to get it on a 30 day trial and if it works the club would purchase. A motion was made and passed to make Rick McIlvanie an honorary member. OLD BUSINESS Bi-plane Sunday is set for March 21st weather permitting. Lebanon Flea Market is on March 13th if any one is interested in going. Bob Lanard is taking fuel orders until the end of April, if you need fuel let him know. NEW BUSINESS Bob Demola is in the process of getting pricing on shirts, hats and other items with the club logo on them and will present at the next meeting. Multi-Engine Sunday is on April 18th. The club Flea Market is set for May 25th. The president asked to have volunteers for this event. Bucks County R/C is having a Flea Market on April 16th, see Steve for flyer and details. Bob Lanard ran the 50/50 with Mike Simmons winning $20.00. The raffle was won by Barry Prather and he chose the Kougar airplane. Second runner up was won by Dennis Buttocolla and he received a WJRC club hat. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm. I haven’t felt up to doing much writing, but luckily I have been getting some input from some of the people who have been to the field. Tom, Had some action at the field today (Tuesday 4/14/10); the below is what transpired up until I left at 3 PM. Don Romano flew the maiden flight and a few follow up flights on his great looking Wing Maker quarter-scale PA-18 Super Cub. Don put a twin-160 engine in it which sounded great and which very easily handled the plane. There were no problems whatsoever with it. Rich Onorato had his Cermark Pitts S2B bipe with a 120 in it flying great. On the first flight though the plane dead-sticked and almost made it to the landing strip. No damage; so Rich put right back in the air. There were no problems with it for the remainder of the day. Rich had built and reviewed this plane a few years back for Fly RC magazine; and, his model made the front cover of the magazine. Steve, Marty, Dave, Bob and myself had a mix of successes and problems. Steve had engine problems with his Kaos that no one was able to correct so after a couple of problem flights he decided to just take it easy and enjoy the beautiful weather. Dave had engine problems with his cub which kept it grounded. Bob flew his T-34 with one unscheduled landing in the field; but the plane emerged undamaged. Bob quickly got it back in the air without any more difficulties for the day. Marty flew his modified Stik .46; and, I flew a Stik .46 and a clipped wing Four Star .60 - which 2 I bashed again on the first landing. This, after I told several members about how much better it landed after clipping the wing. Hope to see more people at the field tomorrow. JJ Tom, I remembered something about the plane I crashed today. The last time I flew it, it 'went in' due to a split in the fuel line. The damage was: two corners of the servo tray broken loose and a split along the fuse. I repaired these as best I could and rechecked the throws and the C.G.; both of which needed adjustment. Regarding today's problem, I think that either the servo tray broke loose again or there was a big warp in the fuse which I couldn't see. Make any sense to you? Didn’t make any sense to me, but what do I know. Hey Mr. V Got to the field today around 10:00 am to meet Don R. for the maiden flight on his new 1/4 scale PA 18 Cub. Don put a 1.60 twin in it for power with a Keleo exhaust system and on board glow system. The only trim it needed on the first flight was a few clicks of down elevator, the plane few great and motor sounded awesome on a low fly by. The field press was there taking photos of the first flight and the new happy owner. Don was kind enough to fuel it up and let me take it around the block a few times, it is one sweet flying airplane. Now for the rest of the flyers at he field, J.J. ( the field press ) showed @ 10:30 and got in several flights with his stick and 4 star 60, Steve Blazer showed up and got in a few flights also, Marty was next with his stick, and got in several flights also. Bob Leonetti arrived with his contender and got in several flights, Rich Onorato also arrived with his Cermark Pitts and Rich also got in several flights. Around 15:00 pm Gas & Go arrived with his Cosmic Wind and was flying when I was getting ready to depart for home, also around 15:30 Neal Stokes arrived to get in some stick time also. Tom we had a nice crowd, and now the disappointing part of the day for you TOM. There was not ONE SINGLE MISHAP, that’s it for now buddy. Dave West Jersey Wind This from Larry Chase. Well, Tom asked for filler for the new letter, so here is my attempt. I think it was Good Friday when Donnie and I showed up at the field with my trusty Navistar and the Telemaster that Gregg gave to Donnie. My intention was to get Donnie on the buddy box and see how he flew the Telemaster. We connected and cross checked the buddy box. The plane started fine and I thought we had the mixtures adjusted correctly so we taxied on out to the runway for a from the dirt pile take off. The Telemaster left the ground perfect and then I banked left and gained a little altitude. When I throttled down the engine stalled. Dead stick on the first flight on a plane that Mr. Rich told me had been around the club for at least 20 years. The wind was a little gusty, I know you guys have told me to be careful with the trainers on windy days, so I headed towards the dirt piles and I thought I could make a slow rudder turn and line up with the run way but as it turned out the plane turned to port as slow as the Titanic. You know how you tune out the sound and yells behind when you are flying? Well, I was told a little later that, as I realized half way into the Titanic port turn, the trees are coming up fast! I have actually never heard an elephant charging through a forest but it must sound something like that old Telemaster as gravity got the better of it. Well Donnie looked up at me and just shook his head a little. I guess I did manage to show him how to crash without panic but I guess you don’t need a buddy box for that. After retrieving the Telemaster, to everyone’s surprise there was only a small dent on the leading edge of the port wing and a crack in the elevator. CA to the rescue and one more shot at mixture adjustment. The next flight I let Donnie sit back and watch. I guess I must have over done the ground speed before take off because JJ said that old plane can really move. After about 5 minutes I tried to land. This time, no engine trouble but, I’ll blame it on the wind gremlins, the Telemaster tried to head for the pits to land. Rudder! Rudder! Safety officer Mr. Rich instructed loudly! Gregg was watching to as the point of contact appeared to 3 be his camp. I indeed had full left rudder kicked in but as I learned in the previous flight, slow plane, no rudder. I flicked the ailerons to the right and added throttle and was headed for the tree tops about 45 degrees from the dirt piles. I Just cleared the trees and climbed to circle two more times and land. This sport is not boring! I know this is getting long but today Donnie and I got to the field about 6:20 and we quickly got the Telemaster set up with the buddy box. Donnie had been practicing with the simulator all week so I told him he was going to take off. He taxied towards the dirt piles and turned, lineup and headed towards the trees. The plane rolled off the dirt runway and onto the grass. “More throttle”, “Pull up” and away he went, his first takeoff. It looked like he was flying the simulator. I landed after about 4 minutes and we refueled. He took off again but with a little more confidence this time, adding left aileron at about 10 feet off the ground! I suggested he wait just a bit longer next time. After another 5 minutes I landed and by this time the sun was beginning to set behind the trees. “Are we going again?” It took me a minute to explain that 50 year old eyes do not absorb as much light as 13 year old eyes but he understood. What a great day! Larry In other news, Dave Morgan wants everyone to know that Paul Gross cart wheeled his Spitfire down the runway while trying to land. Some minor damage was done to the wings I believe. Paul blamed the mishap on a rut in the runway, but we know better don’t we! The following should go into next months newsletter, but I don’t want to forget it so I am putting it in this months. Larry Chase’s son Donnie has mad his first unassisted landing!!! I am sure he will be soloing soon. Congratulations Donnie!!! I understand that Jerry Jones is a little under the weather, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
