RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING
MASK FIT TESTING - WHY FIT TEST?
Under Australian and NZ Standards, everyone using a mask in any workplace
must be fit tested before starting, and at least annually thereafter. Without an
enforced, documented fit testing program, your organisation could be found
legally liable as an unsafe workplace.
Verification of Training
A Fit Test checks that the worker has learned how to properly put on and wear a
respirator without assistance.
Sizing
Fully
complies
with:
AS/NZS 1715:
2009
OHSA (USA)
HSE (UK)
It is important to make sure that a respirator is the right size and therefore
capable of providing protection when worn properly.
Quantitative fit testing is accurate, fast and safe for your workers.
PORTACOUNT results are immediate and unambiguous.
Take a step up from the old-fashioned guesswork of qualitative fit testing and
provide an objective measurement of the quality of the seal between the wearer’s
face and the facepiece; producing a Fit Factor for each staff member in real time
Fit Factor
A Fit Factor is a measure of how well a particular face piece seals against a
person’s face. It is a number that is the direct result of a measurement made
during a simulation of workplace activities (the exercises). It is a ratio of the
number of particles inside and outside of the mask. The PortaCount can measure
fit factors from 1 to over 10 000. Due to the precision of its patented particle
counter, the PortaCount is considered by far the world’s most accurate Fit Tester.

Particle Count Inside Facepiece
How it works
The PortaCount® respirator fit testing equipment measures real-time fit while the
user performs a series of moving, breathing and talking exercises designed to
simulate the same movements made in the workplace. The step by step process
is guided via the FitPro+™ Fit Test Software and stored in a database for easy
report generation, retrieval and regulatory compliance. The stored data is easily
transferrable via a USB drive.
PortaCount can be operated by itself or it can also be connected to your own
external computer to generate reports and print fit test cards.
No other fit tester can quantitatively fit test so many types of respirators—gas
masks, SCBAs, respirators, even disposables (with the 8038 model).
Adaptor Kits
Mask adapters kits allow a worker to be fit tested in their own mask. Available
for an extensive range of respirators throughout Australia, you can order many
models from Kenelec or your respirator manufacturer.

Use the Real-time Fit Factor Display to show
workers the real-time effects of mask positioning

Software
FitPro software provides the vital documentation you need for your respirator
program. You can provide management with hard-copy evidence that each
employee passed a fit test, was trained to don the respirator properly and
assigned a mask size that fits correctly.
Each PortaCount comes with the software and also access to free online training
modules, webinars and free lifetime updates.
If you have multiple PortaCounts the FitPro software enables you to fit test up to
4 people simultaneously - saving time and money.

Fit factors for anyone who has smoked recently
will be lower than that individual deserves and may
even cause them to fail the fit test entirely. Smokers
exhale particles for at least 30 minutes after they
have been smoking. The PortaCount Pro fit tester
can count these particles and will interpret them
as if they were caused by face seal leakage. Avoid
retests by instructing smokers not to smoke for at
least 30 minutes prior to fit testing.

MASK INTEGRITY TEST ACCESSORY
You’ve just cleaned your mask? Do you bet your life that you’ve
reassembled it correctly?
Designed by the leaders in quantitative fit testing technology, the TSI Mask
Integrity Test Accessory (MITA) 8120 works in tandem with a PortaCount
Respirator Fit Tester or CBRN Mask Protection Assessment Test System to
quickly detect leaks in CBRN gas masks and commercial respirators and ensure
your personnel are getting maximum protection.
While under conditions of negative pressure and constant flow, the mask is
tested on a full head form with an enhanced bladder seal system to provide a
tight seal for most gas mask and full face respirator types and sizes. Testing
the mask on this full head form configuration allows for use of the mask’s head
harness, mimicking a real-life application and providing better representative
results. Unlike anything else on the market*, when a leak is detected during
the assessment, the integrated aerosol wand and generator is used to pinpoint
invisible leaks for quick evaluation and repair. Additionally, MITA is capable of
testing the integrity of a mask’s exhalation valve and drink tube when applicable.
KENELEC.COM.AU / 1300 73 22 33
Some competitor models are not mask integrity testers. Their main function is
to test SCBA regulators, air bottles and for some, test the step-down/breathing
flow. Some units also use +/- pressure to check for large leaks, but since they do
not generate particles, they do not have the sensitivity to determine where the
mask is leaking from.
General Features
• Separate tests for overall mask integrity (Protection Factor), exhalation valve
and drink tube
• Integrated aerosol wand pinpoints leak locations, allowing for immediate
evaluation and repair, potentially avoiding replacement costs
• Efficient test sequence allows allows testing of up to 20 masks per hour

The hazard potential of airborne dust, solid
particles, or droplets is dependent on the mass
concentration as well as the particle size. Particle
size determines the deposition site within the
respiratory tract and the subsequent health
effect. Therefore, the American Conference of
Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) has
recommended that particle-size selective Threshold
Limit Values (TLV®s) be developed for inhalation
hazards in the workplace.

Unlike larger particles, ultra-fine particles are more easily inhaled and can
penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially causing serious health effects.
Below .05μm (micron) these particles can be absorbed directly into the
blood stream, which again can cause a wide range of serious health
problems.

The Airtec monitor is a compact and highly portable
real-time elemental carbon monitor designed to
determine exposure of workers in underground
mines to DPM. Airtec uses a real time particle
capture and light transmission method to yield
elemental carbon values which closely correlate
with NIOSH 5040 test results to measure EC and
TC levels in underground mines.
This monitor is designed to allow the operator and
management to take immediate, remedial action to
address a problem area. Levels can also be tracked
over time to determine the possibility of long
term health hazards and help eliminate the risks
associated with over-exposure.

HOW DO I
PROPERLY
CALIBRATE
MY PUMP?
When sampling using filter
cassettes, the accuracy of your
sample collection depends
on an accurate amount of air
passing through the filter. Filter
cassettes create a high amount
of backpressure in the sampling
‘train’. So to calibrate the pump
airflow properly the sampling
‘train’ must be in a certain order.
Airflow must pass though the
calibrator first, then through
the media, and finally through
the pump. By configuring your
calibration setup this way, you are
measuring the flow rate of air as it
enters the filter.
The TSI Primary Calibrators are portable, batteryoperated units that are lightweight, easy to use and
accurate within 2% of reading. Volumetric flow rate
is displayed continuously so adjustments to pump
flow can be made in real-time. The LCD display is
easy to read.

Gravimetric analysis samples require filters to
be weighed both before and after sampling to
determine the amount of contaminate collected.
Zefon pre-weighed cassettes eliminate the
inconvenience of pre-weighing filters by providing
the filter weight on each cassette prior to sampling.
Zefon match-weighed cassettes eliminate the need
to weigh filters before sampling by providing two
filters which are matched in weight. The top filter
collects particulate and the bottom filter serves as
a control. After sampling, both filters are weighed
and the difference in weight equals the amount of
contaminate collected.
General Features
Note: The use of match-weighed cassettes
overcome the environmental conditions issue as
both filters are exposed to the same environmental
conditions. Therefore, after sampling, the
measured weight difference is solely the amount of
contaminate collected.

Environmental conditions can have a significant effect on filter weight
readings. When using Zefon pre-weighed cassettes, it is important that
the post sample weighing is performed under the same environmental
conditions used at the Zefon factory. Those conditions are set at a
temperature of 68° F (± 1.0°F) and a relative humidity of 50% (± 1%).

KENELEC.COM.AU / 1300 73 22 33
■■MCE MEMBRANE FILTERS
• Mixed Cellulose Ester (MCE) Filter Membrane
Discs are manufactured from a mixture of
cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate. MCE
membrane filters are one of the most widely
used filters in both air monitoring and analytical
applications.
■■PVC MEMBRANE FILTERS
• Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Membrane Filters (GLA5000) are excellent membrane filters for sampling
airborne metals, silica, and dust. Comprised
of inherently low ash pure homopolymer PVC,
these filters are particularly suited to provided
interference-free silica determinations. Low
moisture pick-up and low tare weight assure
gravimetric stability.
■■POLYCARBONATE MEMBRANE FILTERS
• Polycarbonate track-etch (PCTE) membrane
filters are manufactured from polycarbonate films.
They feature a smooth flat surface, exhibit wellcontrolled pore size and shape, and have very
low levels of extractables. Naturally hydrophobic.
■■SILVER MEMBRANE FILTERS
• Silver Metal Filter Membranes are pure metallic
silver (99.97% pure silver) and are available with
particle retention ratings of 0.45 or 0.8 microns.
Silver metal membranes are used in a variety of
filtration applications, and their ability to withstand
extreme chemical and thermal stress makes them
ideal for applications involving aggressive fluids
and/or high temperatures.
■■PTFE MEMBRANE FILTERS
• PTFE membrane filters provide excellent
chemical resistance and are suitable for use in
the most aggressive sampling environments.
■■GLASS FIBRE FILTERS
• Zefon glass microfiber filters are produced from
100% borosilicate glass microfiber without the
use of binders or strengthening agents. The
fibers used to manufacture these depth filters
are smooth and uniform. This permits their
characteristically high flow rates while allowing
retention of exceptionally small particles and
high load capacity. These characteristics are
particularly important in applications involving
high concentrations of particulate.
Zefon manufacture a range of filter support
pads. These filter supports are used behind filter
membranes to support them from collapsing while
still allowing free air flow through them.
General Features
• Available in cellulose, porous plastic and stainless
steel grids
• Available in 25mm and 37mm sizes, stainless
steel grid also available in 47mm size
• Supplied in packs of 100, stainless steel filter
supports are sold as individual units
Options
■■CELLULOSE
• Cellulose pads are made up of 100% pure
cellulose and the most common support used in
filter cassettes.
■■POROUS PLASTIC
• Porous plastic supports work well when sampling
chemicals that are not compatible with cellulose.
■■STAINLESS STEEL GRIDS
• Stainless steel grids can be used in a wide range
of filter holders and can easily be cleaned and
re-used.

BIO-TAPETM
TEDLAR GAS SAMPLING BAGS
Bio-Tape™ provides a standardized surface sampling method used for
the determination of possible microbial, bioaerosol, and inorganic dust
contamination. Quickly take a sample and measure the relative degree
of contamination. It is especially useful when sampling valuable or nontransportable materials and is very effective on smooth areas.
Bio-Tape consists of a flexible plastic microscope slide with a pre-defined
adhesive area. A center-line marker on the slide aids the user in locating the
center when taking the sample and also aids the laboratory analyst. Each slide is
provided with a unique serial number for traceability and packed in a slide mailer
to prevent cross contamination.
Bio-Tape is compatible with both optical microscopy and scanning electron
microscopy (SEM). This provides the ability to perform optical and SEM analysis
along with an x-ray analysis on the exact same air surface sample and exact same
particles.
General Features
• Provides sample consistency
• Individually serialized for traceability
• Prevents cross contamination
• Requires less laboratory prep time
• Eliminates problems of placing tape in a zip bag, or broken glass slides
• Samples may be archived by the laboratory for later review

INDOOR AIR QUALITY & GAS MONITORING
INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Providing a comfortable, safe and healthy indoor environment is an increasingly important concern. Good indoor air quality increases concentration and productivity
which can reduce lost days due to absence. A good indicator of proper ventilation is the level of CO2 present in a space. Carbon dioxide is a normal by-product of
occupant respiration. Elevated levels of CO2 may indicate that additional dilution ventilation is required.

FUME HOOD MONITORS
FMH10 FUME HOOD MONITOR
Fume hoods are a primary source or protection in
laboratories. Face velocity measurements are often
used to gauge the performance of a fume hood’s
ability to contain and exhaust hazardous chemicals.
By accurately measuring face velocity and alarming
on unsafe conditions, TSI’s FHM10 Fume Hood
Monitors provide a high level of fume hood safety.
The FHM10 helps users comply with standards and
regulations set forth by OSHA, NFPA, ANSI Z9.5,
and SEFA, calling for monitors to be installed on
fume hoods.

FUME HOOD CONTROLLERS
FMC50 FUME HOOD CONTROLLER
TSI 800920 Slimline Module
Sash Position Sensor
FHC50 with Sidewall sensor (with FHC50-01)
The Model FHC50 Fume Hood Controller adds the ability to control airflow to
maintain safety and energy efficiency.
There are two main monitor and control strategies that can be used with the
Model FHC50 Fume Hood Controller:
Face Velocity
One of the key components of air flow in a fume hood is adequate face velocity,
which is needed to protect fume hood users. An adequate face velocity will help
contain contaminants inside of the fume hood.
A fume hood exhaust system produces a negative pressure differential between
the fume hood’s interior and the laboratory, causing air to be drawn into the
hood. The speed of air entering the fume hood is called the face velocity. The
Model FHC50 Fume Hood Controller can be configured to continuously monitor
fume hood face velocity by measuring the air velocity across a sensor mounted
in the sidewall of the hood. The sensor and opening in the fume hood are driven
by the same pressure differential so the velocity across each is related.
As an alternative to this sidewall sensing methodology, the Model FHC50 can
determine average fume hood face velocity by measuring the fume hood exhaust
flow and sash area. When measuring face velocity in this fashion, the Model
FHC50 must use a venturi valve with feedback to control and measure the
exhaust volume. A sash sensor then measures the vertical opening of the fume
hood sash. As an option, the Model FHC50 can use a sidewall sensor to monitor
or trim the face velocity when calculated from sash position and exhaust flow
rate.
The Model FHC50 controller modulates the exhaust to maintain an adequate
face velocity at all FHC.
Exhaust Flow
Certain devices such as laminar flow benches, canopy hoods and snorkels need
to exhaust a certain amount of air to function properly. For these applications,
the Model FHC50 can be configured to measure and control the air flow to a
constant volume using a venturi valve or a flow station with damper.

MASS FLOW METERS
The TSI Mass Flowmeters can be used for a multitude of gas flow measurement
applications. Whether measuring gas flows in a laboratory or manufacturing
setting, TSI general purpose mass flowmeters provide accurate results with
multiple data output options. The display versions come complete with
accessories making setup and operation fast and convenient.
The TSI mass flowmeters are specified as two percent of flow rate reading.
One TSI mass flow meter covers the same range as three percent (or more) of
full scale devices, with better accuracy at most points. Fast four millisecond
response ensures accuracy in fluctuating flows. This fast response time of the
TSI mass flowmeter is ideal for closed-loop control systems and integrated
volume measurements. Low pressure drop of the TSI mass flowmeter minimizes
flow circuit back pressure and its impact on the system.

SOUND & VIBRATION
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LMAX, LMIN AND PEAK
When measuring noise levels Lmax and Peak should not be confused. Lmax is
the RMS (root mean squared) maximum level of a noise source or environment
where peak is the maximum level of the raw noise source.
RMS values give a clearer understanding of a noise level, making calculations
and measurements easier for a noise source waveform which is changing
constantly in its magnitude.

• Lmax is the highest RMS sound pressure level within the measuring period
• Lmin is the lowest RMS sound pressure level within the measuring period

NOISE ACTIVATED WARNING SYSTEMS
CASTLE GA902 NOISE ACTIVATED WARNING SYSTEM
According to industrial safety law, areas subject to hazardous noise must be
clearly defined, and workers notifies of the danger. In many cases, the noise
hazard is intermittent and that’s precisely the situation for which the GA902 was
designed.
The GA902 activates only when the noise exceeds a pre-set level allowing
exposed workers to wear ear defenders - often a less than popular safety
measure - only when absolutely necessary.
General Features
• Measuring Range 74dB to 112.5dB
• Trigger level adjustable in 2.5dB steps
• Housed in a rugged enclosure – stainless steel housing also available for food
and pharmaceutical

CASTLE GA904 ELECTRONIC ORANGE
(ENTERTAINMENT NOISE CONTROLLER)
Everybody likes to party, but it’s all too easy to let music levels get out of hand and when the morning comes, complaints come rolling in and your licence is on
the line. The Castle Electronic Orange Noise Controller will keep your premises
free from the risk of complaints and closure. The unit is connected to the main
power supply for the amplification equipment. The Electronic Orange flashes a
warning when pre-set sound levels are exceeded.
If the operator doesn’t turn down the sound within a pre-set time, an automatic
cut off kicks in. The music never has to stop, because a warning light flashes if
the limit is exceeded, and only when this is ignored does the power supply cut
off to prevent further abuse. Pioneered by Castle, this unit, approved by The
Environmental Health, is used by thousands of venues through the World, and
the latest model is as easy to use, robust and reliable as ever.

CASTLE EVEC SELF-CONTAINED WHOLE BODY VIBRATION METER
Evec was designed to facilitate the measurement
and evaluation of whole-body vibration. Evec offers
advanced technology which can be learned easily
and quickly, even by untrained users.
The seat sensor, including its integrated memory, is
just placed on the driver’s seat - without having to
be mounted mechanically and without needing any
disturbing cables. The sensor is activated and the
measurement thus started with just a few operator
steps. The necessary software is installed on a
PDA or a notebook with Bluetooth interface. You
need just a few settings – and your evec system is
ready for use. The data recorded is also read from
the seat sensor through Bluetooth. There are no
annoying cables which might be damaged during
the measurement. The driver does not have to do
anything. The evec system automatically registers
when the driver gets up and, complying with EN
14253, cuts off the peaks when the driver sits down
too energetically.
This allows precise measurements of the load to
which the driver is exposed through the effect
of vibrations. Special data preparation is not
necessary. Conforming to EU Directive 2002/44/
EC, the evec software calculates the A(8) value
of the daily exposure, no matter whether the
measurement covered the full span of eight hours
or whether evaluation is based on a shorter time
period.
