Lapua´s world famous quality comes
partly from decades of experience,
top-quality raw material and a wellmanaged manufacturing process.
Despite the automation in production
and quality assurance, our staff
personally inspects every lot and,
if necessary, even each individual
cartridge.
Passion for precision
Lapua, or more officially Nammo Lapua Oy and Lapua GmbH, is part
of the large Nammo Group. Our main products are small caliber
cartridges and components for sport, hunting and professional use.
For decades Lapua has strived to produce
the best possible cartridges and components for those who have
a passion for precision. The results from various competitions
worldwide prove that we are the preferred partner for the champions,
everywhere.
This has been achieved by consistent product development and
cooperation with top shooters.
The top quality and superior accuracy that are characteristic to
all Lapua cartridges are achieved with precise combining of the
components. Reliable and timely ignition, optimal muzzle velocity
and excellent ballistic properties are the result of well designed and
carefully manufactured components. A cartridge can be perfect when
all components match together perfectly.

Lapua Ballistics
Scenar Bullet Family
New ballistic software for mobile phones with
improved properties
The First Choice For Serious
Target Competition
L
• Now available also for Android phones
• Includes also Lapua cartridge data
Lapua Ballistics is the ultimate in
accurate exterior ballistic software for
deriving elevation (shooting distance)
and wind correction solutions on the
range, in special operations or in the
hunting fields. Whereas Lapua’s Quick
Target Unlimited (QTU) software is
for calculations, bullet comparison,
ballistic table printing etc. purposes
at home with a PC, the new Lapua
Ballistics program is always available
in your pocket-with the same
astonishingly high level of accuracy.
This new version calculates
also Lapua rimfire and subsonic
cartridges accurately.
4
Lapua Ballistics is based on precisely
accurate Doppler radar ballistic
measurements of Lapua bulletsprofessional data available only for
Lapua bullets and cartridges. This
makes Lapua Ballistics much more
accurate than any other ballistic
program for mobile phones. Only
Quick Target Unlimited software can
compare to this degree of accuracy. As
an example, error with this program in
elevation is less than 2.5 cm (1”) for
338 Lapua Magnum at 1,500 meters
(1,640 yds) –less than a quarter of one
click, with a standard ¼ MOA click
scope . With traditional B.C. (G1), error
would be over 1 meter (>40”).
Lapua Ballistics can be installed
to all mobile phones supporting
basic Java or Android (Java MIDP
2.0 or Android support needed). Most
inexpensive base worldwide. Webbrowsing (or WAP) is needed in the
phone. SIM-card is needed during
installation but not after that if you
like to use your phone without care in
extreme conditions.
Lapua Ballistics is very simple to use
(advanced options not activated):
1) Choose Lapua bullet or cartridge you are
using from the list.
2) Fill basic sight-in data (muzzle velocity, click
values of your scope).
3) Fill actual shooting distance and weather
conditions.
4) Output is visible all the time on the top of
the display as number of total clicks (or
cm/inch/MOA if so selected from the
settings menu).
Naturally you can enter data and make
correction for wind, scope height
to bore, temperature, air-pressure
(location/altitude), zero click values,
shooting uphill or downhill, etc..
Gun and ammunition combination
profiles can be stored, allowing you to
have your favorite hunting load stored
and being able to bring it up to use
in just seconds. A single gun can have
multiple ammo profiles with one load
being the default the scope is zeroed
for, while others, even with different
POI, configured in such a way that you
always get true elevation and windage
values to dial in.
Extreme long range and professional
shooters will benefit from the highly
advanced options of Lapua Ballistics
–features not available with any other
ballistics software for mobile phones.
1) Coriolis correction (latitude and shooting
direction must be given).
2) Spin drift correction (twist rate must be
given).
3) Muzzle velocity is adjusted based on powder
temperature sensitivity (dv/dT, data must be
measured for your caliber, load and powder)
4) You can even put two different values for
dv/dT for low and high temperatures.
5) Correction in total number of clicks always
available on top of display – no time
delays, no need to press OK or Enter to start
calculation, always ready to shoot.
Metric units (cm, m, Celsius etc.)
or Imperial units (inches, yards,
Fahrenheit etc.) can be chosen from
the settings menu. Language is always
English.

The ScenarL bullets now available:
6mm 90 gr and 105 gr ScenarL bullets
.224 69 gr and 77 gr ScenarL bullets
Lapua’s record-breaking line of Scenar
target
et bullets were first introduced in
the mid-1980s, and immediately made
a name for themselves. They were
the very first European manufactured
HPBT match bullets and set the
standard from that point on. In 1990,
the Scenar was used in Moscow to
set a new world record in 300 meter
ISSF competition, points 600 out of a
possible 600. Literally, a perfect score.
The Scenar’s accuracy and unrivaled
consistency has made them the natural
choice for the serious competitor.
But it gets better. We at Lapua have
never been content to rest on our
laurels. We have recently undertaken
a major program to make these
outstanding bullets even more
accurate. Not a redesign in ballistics,
but a refinement in all manufacturing
steps. Using our state of the art
manufacturing capabilities and
decades of competitive experience,
we have set out to tighten all
measures and requirements, including
our already famous quality control
standards. Closer weight tolerances,
Sharing the same aerodynamic profiles
as their predecessors, the ScenarL are
the perfect choice for any type of
competitive shooting. Whether it’s
ISSF or CISM, Benchrest or F-Class,
Silhouette, High Power Across the
Course or Long Range, the new ScenarL
line will give you the extra edge that
takes you to the winners circle.
tighter jacket wall concentricity
standards, and greater uniformity
in every dimension, starting from
the gilding metal cup, lead wire and
jacket forming, ending up to corejacket assembly, boat tail pressing
and tipping. Several new proprietary
machines, manufacturing steps and
advanced instrumentations combined
to the ScenarL manufacturing line
never seen before in bullet production.
We also took our already high quality
control standards and kicked them
up a notch. This new generation of
match bullets has been dubbed the
ScenarL, and is a fitting successor to the
vaunted Scenar family.
Based on the Scenar’s proven track
record of competitive successes,
Lapua’s new ScenarL will deliver the
ultimate performance in the most
demanding competitive environments
every time. Precision craftsmanship,
painstaking quality control standards,
state of the art manufacturing
technology and advanced ballistic
design all combine to make the new
ScenarL the very best of the best!

Centerfire Sport Shooting.
For marksmen around the world,
the Lapua symbol or name at the cartridge
head stamp means one thing: reliability.
Decades of experience and interaction with
marksmen have led to the development
of products with unmatched accuracy and
consistent quality.
Handgun cartridges
.222 Remington
Factory loaded Lapua .222 Remington
cartridge, with the very accurate Lapua S538 3.6g/55gr FMJ bullet, is now available. For
the handloader, Lapua offers .222 Remington unprimed match class cartridge cases.
.223 Remington
The Lapua .223 Remington match
ammunition has been designed to meet the
strict demands of competitive shooting. The base, body and neck of the case are perfected
to maintain exact tolerances over multiple reloading cycles.
The highest velocity 4.5 g/69gr HPBT Scenar factory loaded ammunition available. The
925mps/3030fps muzzle velocity gives extended effective range and excellent accuracy.
6mm BR Norma
World-class accuracy with minimal recoil.
The 6mm BR Norma is the cartridge of
choice in ISSF and CISM 300m events. Lapua’s 6mm BR ammunition is the right choice for
shooters who want a lighter bullet that is easier on the shoulder, and yet delivers reliable
match winning accuracy. Lapua’s 6mm BR ammunition is currently used by world’s top
competitors. Two bullet versions available; 5.8g/90gr and 6.8g/105gr HPBT Scenar.
Lapua´s pistol and revolver cartridges
are extremely accurate and supremely
reliable. Our range includes best-inclass alternatives for all centerfire pistol
events organized by CISM and ISSF. It is
therefore no wonder that in the CISM
centerfire pistol event nine out of ten
marksmen choose Lapua’s cartridges.
The accuracy of Lapua´s handgun
cartridges is continuously tested with
different types of weapons. Even though
the requirements we set for accuracy are
extremely strict, our goal is always to
go beyond them. Ideally, a single, tight,
ragged hole for the entire string. These
are also the reasons why the world’s
leading pistol manufacturers recommend
Lapua cartridges.
In CISM World Championships 2010 in
Rio de Janeiro more than 90 % of the
centerfire pistol competitors used Lapua
ammunition.
6.5x47 Lapua
Rifle cartridges
USERS´ COMMENTS
The pioneer in target shooting cartridges.
Lapua ammunition is known by shooters all over the world. We
are pleased to partner with the world’s top shooters, and to be an
example copied by other manufacturers. Our ultimate long range
target shooting cartridge, the .338 Lapua Magnum, is already a
legend (more details in the Special Purpose section). Following in
its footsteps is our newest precision target shooting cartridge, the
6.5x47 Lapua.
The first ever practical shooting (IPSC)
European Rifle Championship was held in
Norway 2009. All the top European and
American shooters were present.
Lapua is the choice of a champion.
Lapua´s extremely accurate target shooting cartridges are loaded
with the best target bullets - Scenar, FMJBT, D46 and Lock Base.
Numerous world championships, olympic championships and other
top competition gold medals, as well as many official world records in
different disciplines are shot with the Lapua cartridges.
The current top Lapua target cartridges are, the 6.5x47 Lapua,
6mm BR Norma, 6.5x55 Swedish, .308 Winchester and .338 Lapua
Magnum loaded with Scenar bullets.
The Open division winner of the match
was Lapua Shooting Team member Raine
Peltokoski. Lapua .223 Rem. 69gr HPBT
Scenar factory ammunition was Raine’s
choice for the windy and mountainous
Norwegian terrain. 69gr Scenar makes a
fast load with a good ballistic coefficient.
This makes for a flatter trajectory and
reduced sensitivity to wind.
Hitting small steel plates at 250 meters
with a strong side wind or having the steel
plates at 160 meters and paper targets
at 270 meters at the same stage requires
good external ballistics and accuracy. That’s
exactly what Lapua Scenar delivers.

Lapua´s long experience in rimfire cartridge
manufacturing shows in an outstanding series of
medals and world records. Lapua cartridges bring the
shooters success in every discipline. The compatibility
of the cartridge and the rifle is especially important
in prone disciplines.
Whatever your shooting preference,
you will find the right cartridge
from our wide selection of .22
rimfire cartridges. These range from
the X-ACT, simply the world´s most
accurate .22 cartridge, to bullets
expecially designed for biathlon
sport shooting.
“ I have had a chance to do some rifle
development with the X-ACT ammunition
lots you sent, and I am very pleased!
It tested very well (all three lots) in the
setup I used at the Nationals this year.
I then rotated it thru some of my other
barrels of known performance, and WOW
did I find some good combinations.
Lapua´s uncompromising approach to quality is
probably most evident in rimfire cartridges. Although
the quantity of shots fired is high, the marksman
must be able to trust every single cartridge to work
and hit its target accurately. We also manufacture
state-of-the-art rimfire cartridges under the SK
brand.
Revolutionary X-ACT
Lapua is proud to present
a revolutionary rimfire cartridge,
the X-ACT. Customized production
methods enabled us create an accuracy
level never seen before. The world´s
best shooters have been testing the
ammunition and been amazed about
the accuracy results.

Pistol King
I decided to test the X-ACT in my
Benchmark – the results were really
impressive. I shot an aggregate group size
of .395” (outside / outside) at 50 meters,
and an aggregate of .640” (outside
/ outside) at 100 yards in this barrel.
This performance is about 40% better
than the ammunition I used to win the
Nationals in 2008.“

Lapua .22 Service Center at
Nammo Tactical Ammunition
Mesa, AZ, USA
Golden history
Lapua started manufacturing the .22 rimfire
ammunition just after WWII, in 1947.
Lapua ammunition in red white and blue
box became recognized for its accuracy
and soon gold medals were shot in both
world shooting championships and Olympic
competitions. Lapua took its place on .22
rimfire ammunition top level for years to
come.
Nammo now operates the Lapua Service Center at Nammo Tactical
Ammunition in Mesa, AZ. This Service Center is equipped with stateof-the-art equipment for testing .22 rimfire ammunition.
Many national and international sport shooters and teams have
made use of a similar Service Center at the Lapua and SK factory in
Schonebeck, Germany. Now USA and other international shooters
will have the special opportunity for selecting the ammunition from
the Lapua and SK product ranges for their rifles and handguns.
We offer competitive shooters and teams the opportunity to test
our Lapua and SK brand rimfire ammunition. You will have selected
ammunition lots of our two product lines at your disposal for
tests. We can service you with different equipment for fixing your
barrels into return to battery rests, and, with the aid of the most
modern measuring techniques, to test successfully – independently
of the weather conditions – the ammunition lots in your rifles and
handguns. We’ll select and define the optimum ammunition brand
and lot, perfectly tuned for your guns.
Lapua introduced the .22 LR ammunition
with a distinctive “blue box” brand, later
following such products as Match Grade and
Championship that became world famous in
accuracy and gained top results in shooting
competitions. Lapua developed production
technology and kept production quality at
very high level, which made such successful
NRA Pistol
Champion
Philip Hemphill
products possible. Lapua was also the first
manufacturer that introduced different bullet
diameters for the .22 LR to help shooters
choose the best bullet size for their firearms.
Future of success
In the 2000’s Lapua set next generation
standards for the .22 LR match ammunition
with the X-ACT ammunition that proved to
be the most accurate and most uniform .22

USERS´ COMMENTS
“The latest Lapua cartridge brass to be
made available to handloaders is for the
.22-250. When you open the box, the first
thing you notice is the distinctive blue/
brown discoloration on the case necks
and shoulders. This residual oxidation is
caused by the annealing process and visually
demonstrates they have been made properly.
Unlike most other commercial manufacturers,
Lapua doesn’t tumble and polish the cases
after annealing just to make them shiny.
Prepping new instead of fired cases, of
course, is a somewhat abbreviated process;
however, I still partially neck size to “true up”
the case mouths and then trim and debur
each piece. If I’m really trying to squeeze
out the best accuracy, I sort them by weight
and countersink each flash hole internally
to remove errant or malformed material. I
usually recut the primer pockets to uniform
depth just to be sure the primers can be
seated consistently.
I soon determined most of these steps
weren’t needed to prep the .22-250 Lapua
brass. I first sorted the 100 cases by weight
using a couple of loading trays. The first one
(and 18 others) weighed 160.6 grains. Every
one ranged between 160.0 and 161.0 grains.
Next, I inspected the primer pockets and
flash holes and found, as expected, nothing
needed there. Then I measured a few pieces
to see how much they’d need to be trimmed.
The maximum case length for the .22-250 is
1.912 inches, and the recommended trimto-length is ten thousandths less, i.e., 1.902
inches. The first few measured 1.903/1.904,
so I continued to measure additional ones
at random. I eventually measured the whole
batch. They all measured between 1.902 and
1.905 inches with approximately 80 percent
right in the middle.
Hummm….there’s no pressing need to trim
them either.
While the cases were sorted by weight in the
trays, I did notice three or four slightly out of
round case mouths, so I necksized the whole
batch and lightly deburred the inside of each
case mouth. I mean, I had to do something to
maintain my self-esteem, right?”

ScenarL
Lapua has recently
undertaken a daunting
task; to make the best even
better. We’ve combined both
our experience and our state
of the art manufacturing
capabilities to further refine the tolerances on our match
winning Scenar bullet. The product of this process is the new
line of ScenarL bullets. Drawn to even tighter standards of
jacket wall concentricity, weight variation and dimensional
uniformity, this new line takes our well known reputation for
quality to the highest level we’ve ever produced. The new
ScenarL, the ultimate match bullet!
The Lapua bullets are known for their accuracy and
superior ballistic design. The Scenar and FMJ bullets are
available for the Lapua .223 Remington. The FMJ bullet
is designed for hunting.
Lapua offers a magazine length bullet of higher Ballistic
Coefficient for Service Rifle category of HighPower rifle
competition. The Lapua 77 grain Scenar provides longrange wind-bucking ability for the 300 yard line, and
beyond.
Almost handmade bullets
The D46, which we developed way back in the 1930s,
is still one of the best industrial full metal jacket bullets.
While development has focused on Lock Base and
Hollow Point bullets that withstand high pressures,
Lapua´s accuracy has just kept improving.
Our Scenar match bullet represents the very high end of its class:
it has achieved the 600/600 world record of the international
sport shooting federation (ISSF). Consistent quality that starts
with the raw materials makes this possible. Lapua bullets are
practically handmade.
The finishing touch of the carefully controlled process is the
primer and powder, which are perfectly compatible with the case
and the bullet. Working together with the leading powder and
primer manufacturers, we carefully choose the powder and a
dependable primer that best fits each cartridge type. Reliability
and accuracy are continuously tested in test shootings.
The development continues all the time in steady steps, drawing
from experience and with a keen ear for the reloaders´ needs. For
marksmen, this development means exceedingly good cartridges
and components. And for us it means more and more stories
about gold medals and records.

D46
Often copied, never equaled.
The legendary D46 is one by
which all others of its type
are measured. Manufactured
to the strictest tolerances for
concentricity, uniformity of
shape and weight, it has shot
its way to the record books since the 1930’s all the way to the
21st century.
Scenar

target competition. Lapua
Scenar hollow point boat
tail bullets have given
suberb results at long
ranges and bench rest
shooting.The Scenar bullets
have the IBS World Record in 600 yard Heavy Gun 5-shot
group (0.404”) and also hold the official world ISSF record of
600 out of 600 possible, an unbeatable score.
Naturalis
A great performing 99%
copper bullet retains up to
100% of its weight. The valve
at the tip of bullet opens
immediately on impact,
leading the bullet to expand
symmetrically and without
shattering. This high tech bullet design gives a maximal shock
effect and it works perfectly within terminal velocities of 500
m/s - 1000 m/s. The Naturalis is extremely effective by giving a
clean shot and minimizes meat loss. Unique Lapua technology.
FMJ
Whether you require bullets
for training, competitions or
serious hunting situations
you can really trust the
performance of Lapua’s FMJ
bullet family. Ten rounds
loaded with Lapua’s .30 S374
8.0/123gr FMJ bullet from 100m can easily achieve groupings
less than 30mm. Reliability means that every shot you fire will
hit the target.
Mega
The Lapua Mega is for
hunting big game. This
bullet is at its best in the
field and typically more than
duplicates on impact, causing
an immediate shock effect
in your quarry. The Mega is
a soft point bullet with a protective copper jacket – traditional
hunting performance. This ensures that the bullet’s lead alloy
core remains intact when shooting through brush or branch.
The mechanical bonding locks the lead alloy in place, allowing
the bullet to achieve up to 97% weight retention. Mega product
family covers the most popular calibres in Scandinavia including
9 products.

The Lapua
Scenar family
Since its introduction, Lapua’s renowned Scenar line has represented the
cutting edge in Match grade target bullets. Our Scenars were used to set
the ISSF world record of a perfect 600/600 against tough competition.
Consistency like this starts with only the finest raw materials, state of the
art manufacturing technology and old world craftsmanship.
Lapua’s legendary
D46 bullet
The first choice for champion shooters.
Often copied, never equaled.
Lapua’s record-breaking line of Scenar target
bullets were first introduced in the mid1980s, and immediately made a name for
themselves. They were the very first European
manufactured HPBT match bullets and set
the standard from that point on. In 1990, the
Scenar was used in Moscow to set a new
world record in 300 meter ISSF competition,
points 600 out of a possible 600. Literally, a
perfect score. The Scenar’s
accuracy and unrivaled
consistency has made them
the natural choice for the
serious competitor.
Record-breaking.
The Scenar bullets have
the IBS World Record in
600 yard Heavy Gun 5-shot
group (0.404”) and hold
the official unbeatable
ISSF World Record: 600
points out of 600 points.
Using the most
sophisticated and
advanced manufacturing
process, combined
with Lapua’s Passion
for Precision, we have
produced a record setting
line of match grade
bullets. We start with
only the finest of raw
materials, refined to our
demanding specifications.
Once they begin their
transformation through
the various forming
processes involved, they
are monitored, measured,
tested at every step along
the way. Jackets, drawn to incredibly tight
standards of wall concentricity and trimmed
precisely to length. Boat tails are carefully
checked to ensure the utmost in straightness
and concentricity with the bearing surface. The
core is uniformly seated into the jacket with
sufficient force to eliminate voids, creating a
perfectly balanced bullet. Finally, the ogives
are formed in precision dies to give the highly
aerodynamic profile, delivering the highest
ballistic coefficient and the finest accuracy.
Throughout this process, samples are pulled at
various points and checked for grain structure,
weight uniformity, concentricity and correct
assembly.
But ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. Each
and every lot is test fired at our state of the art
indoor firing range before it is released for final
packaging. We not only build the accuracy into
our Scenars, we verify it before they ever arrive
on your loading bench. Combine that level of
quality with our incredibly accurate Doppler
radar verified exterior ballistics data and
you’ve got a combination you can depend on.
When you head to a match with Lapua Scenars,
you can be assured that you’re using the best!
Lapua’s Scenar match bullets are available in
five popular bore sizes, from .224” to .338”,
and in a total of thirteen different versions.

The original Lapua D46 was first produced
in the early 1930s, specifically for long range
competitive shooting.
The D46 brought the FMJBT design, and the
production technology required to produce it,
to an entirely new level. Even today, well into
the 21st century, it still stands as a classic of
ballistic design.
The D46 introduced
Lapua’s stepped boat
tail design that served
as our hallmark for
decades. It’s a design
that many others have
tried to copy, but none
have ever equaled its
success. The unique
step-like boat-tail
design was originally
developed by
extensive experimental
ballistics testing in the
1930’s. Without any
computers, modelling
and simulating, Lapua
engineers found a
perfect ballistics
solution for the design
of a long range sniper
bullet. Not until today,
using modern fluid
dynamics simulations of air flow around
the D46 boat tail, do we start to appreciate
just how intelligent and how much ahead
of its time the D46 was - and still is today.
Especially at extra long ranges when air flow
in some regions around the bullet starts to
enter the transonic region.
It was the D46 bullet, loaded into the
7.62x53R cartridge that was used to
win a number of medals and Nordic
championships. The D46 had already made
a name for itself in the competitive world
when it was used to win several top medals
in the 1937 World Shooting Championships.
Since then, the D46 has gone on to win
countless medals and championships at
all levels of competition. Even against the
newer HPBT designs, the D46 is still capable
of holding its own, a testament to Lapua’s
dedication to the precision manufacturing
process that goes into the D46. Combined
with our upgraded manufacturing
capabilities today, the D46 is a classic that
just keeps getting better!
The legendary D46 still remains one of
the very few match grade FMJBT bullets
currently available today.

Naturalis
premium bullet
Controlled and optimized expansion, ideal penetration, powerful
shock effect – not depending on the distance. Solid and unbreakable
construction, weight retention up to 100 %. Unique Lapua technology.
A clean shot – minimized meat loss
Whether you need ammunition for training, competitions or serious
hunting situations, you have to know that ammunition is reliable.
Lapua delivers that accuracy, reliability and dependability in all
situations.
Unbeatable performance
Reliable and traditional
The mushrooming of bullet starts
immediately on impact. The opening process
is started by the valve at the tip of bullet,
leading the bullet to expand symmetrically
and without shattering. This gives a maximal
shock effect to the hunted game. The top
premium copper bullet will make its work
and retains up to 100% of its weight after
the impact.
The Lapua Mega is a soft point bullet
designed for the big game hunting. The
bullet features a lead core and copper jacket
which are mechanically bonded together.
The Mega bullet has also a long jacket that
protects core and prevents premature bullet
expansion or breakage when bullet goes
through light brush or grass cover.
The copper bullet
Naturalis retains up
to 100% of its weight.
Naturalis is a good
example of Lapua´s way
of rethinking its products
– from the hunter´s
perspective. Lapua
responded to the hunters´
needs by developing the
best copper bullet
in the world.
USERS´ COMMENTS
Naturalis is ready –
but is there a bear
or a moose?
26
Mechanical bonding means that core is
firmly locked inside the jacket and will
not separate even on hardest impact.
The Mega bullet has very high, up to
97% retaining weight after impact on
game. It typically more than dubles on
impact, causing an immediate shock
effect.
The Mega bullet family includes 5
bullets which are available in 6.5mm,
.30 and 9.3mm calibers. Ammunition is
loaded in the most popular big game
calibers used in Scandinavia.
The Naturalis bullets and cartridges have rapidly
gained a faithful following among hunters
of different kinds of game. The Naturalis is
extremely effective and has great stopping
power, yet minimizes meat loss. It has been used
to hunt a wide variety of different kinds of game
on all continents and weather conditions.
• Very high weight retention
• Controlled penetration
• Controlled bullet expansion
The factory loaded ammunition is available in
most popular calibers used by the Scandinavian
type of hunters. The Naturalis bullets are sold
for the handloaders worldwide in 7 different
diameters.
Your hunting trips
should leave you with

• A clean shot – minimized meat loss
My hunting partner, a reindeer farmer
from Nellim, feels that my position is not
ideal because of the heavy brush. I still
think the spot is good, based on my prior
experiences in similar brush in the southern
part of Finland. From the number of tracks,
there have obviously been a great many
moose in the area.
Nonetheless, I move a short distance,
and within 20 meters I spot bear tracks.
Noticing that the front paw print is about
15cm wide, I guess the bear is a young
boar. We’ve agreed to hunt a young cow
moose, but the bear tracks are somewhat
confounding those plans. The magazine
and chamber of my Petra 9.3x62 is loaded
with 14.3g/220gr Naturalis, so I’m ready
for whichever game we encounter.
When the sound of an outboard motor on
Siiskeljarvi winds down, I hear our moose
dog, Nella, barking in the distance. She’s
somewhere over towards the Russian
border zone, but headed in our direction.
Nella stops her barking; the game is
moving. Within ten minutes, Nella sounds
off again, much closer now. I flip open
the scope covers, and start scanning the
woods. I guess they are in Paloniemi of
Mitri, but suddenly, the barking stops once
more.
I think there must be at least one moose,
maybe more that Nella is driving before
her. They have two routes to go; directly to
me, or towards Kiertusjärvi and the appa
fenn over there. Both ways are manned by
hunters, waiting to welcome them!
Mega
for big game
Nella sounds off once again, somewhere
on the waterfront, and then continues
to bark continuously. I stop and consider
for a moment that if the animal that
Nella is driving is the bear whose tracks I
saw earlier, he might be headed directly
towards me. Her barking continues to
draw nearer, and I scan the woods intently.
I try to sense the heavy pounding of a
moose coming towards my ridge, to hear
the breaking of the brush. There you go! A
cow moose breaks fast running down the
ridge. She stops as suddenly as if she’d just
run into a wall on the exact spot where
I found the bear tracks earlier. Which is
it that spooked her, the bear’s scent, or
my own? In between the pines, I see the
moose’s shoulder less than 35 yards away
and shoulder my rifle immediately. I fire
from my kneeling position and the
animal drops as if thunderstruck when
the Naturalis slams into her. One or
two kicks of her hooves, and it’s done.
Within a few minutes, my local
hunting partners have come to help
dress the moose and parcel out the
pieces in the local tradition. Once all
the meat is loaded into our boat, there
is still time for coffee brewed over a
campfire.
With the sun now setting behind the
trees, Nella sits in the bow of our boat
like a captain as we cross the lake and
head for home.
Adam Mykkänen
Mäntytureikko means a very brushy
forest here in Northern Lapland, but I
can still picture myself there with my
9.3x62 Valmet Petra carbine.
