R E F L E C T I O N S AWA R D S 2013-2014 Theme “Believe, Dream, Inspire…” The Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a national arts recognition and achievement program for students. Since 1969, more than 10 million students across the nation have taken part in this popular PTA program. The Reflections Program provides an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to: Unleash their creative talents and be inspired Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork Experience the joy and fun of making art Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme Receive positive recognition for original works of art Students submit an original piece, inspired by the annual theme, for their school’s Reflections Program in any of the following arts areas. Dance Choreography Music Composition Film Production Photography Literature Visual Arts To allow student artwork to be recognized and judged with the appropriate developmental age and skill levels in mind, the Reflections Program is organized by school grade, offering five (5) divisions. Primary: Preschool-Grade 2 Intermediate: Grades 3-5 Middle School: Grades 6-8 High School: Grades 9-12 Special Artist: Ungraded To take part, student entries at a school are first recognized, judged and celebrated by the local PTA unit. Some selected unit entries are then chosen to represent the PTA at the council and district PTA levels. Student artwork submitted to California State PTA by a district PTA will be considered for an Award of Excellence and an Award of Merit. Students recognized with a California State PTA Award of Excellence will have: An opportunity to showcase and perform their artwork at the California State PTA convention Prizes including an Award of Excellence medal, certificate and $100 savings bond presented on stage at convention An expense-paid trip for the award-winning student and one parent/guardian to California State PTA convention These Award of Excellence entries represent California State PTA at the National level of the Reflections Program. Student recipients of the National PTA Award of Excellence and Award of Merit are recognized at the annual National PTA convention and their artwork is featured as part of the program’s traveling, national exhibit. FUTURE REFLECTIONS PROGRAM THEME The Reflections Program annual theme search offers another great way for students to get involved in the Reflections Program. Encourage your student to brainstorm and imagine a theme that will appeal to others in preschool through grade 12. For submitting the award-winning theme, the student receives $100 and recognition at the National PTA convention in June. Entries are due November 1. Forms can be found at www.capta.org under Programs, Reflections. 2014-2015 Theme “The world would be a better place if…” C A L I F O R N I A S TAT E PTA P TA R E F L E C T I O N S T H E M E S E A R C H 2 015 -2 016 The California State PTA received 596 theme search entries! Elimisha is the Swahili word for inspire. My film is about successful and inspiring AfricanAmericans and how because they were different, they became special in many ways. I believe my film relates to the theme because it talks about how the people I’ve chosen stood out and how they continue to inspire people like me. As Ella Fitzgerald would say, just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. When there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can really go wrong.” 2014 California State PTA Convention Program Book One World Ella Carter-Klauschie Fourth Grade Castle Heights Elementary Tenth District “The words Believe, Dream, and Inspire make me think of Peace on Earth. I Believe that it can happen. I Dream that people can make a difference. I’m Inspired by dances from other cultures. Dance can bring people together. This dance represents Brazil, Senegal, India and the U.S. as separate cultures to cherish. We come together to respect each other’s cultures, and learn new things. Learning about one another helps us find our similarities, and celebrate our differences. This piece includes Contemporary, West African, Samba-reggae, Bollywood, Bhangra, and Hip-Hop dance. I shaped the traditional styles to show connection, and the world coming together.” Reflections | 77 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE MUSICAL COMPOSITION MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION FILM PRODUCTION Endeavor Stacy Soewono Sixth Grade Deerfield Elementary Fourth District “One day I read some books of famous people having struggle and hardships during each individual’s life. They believed in themselves and worked hard to make their dreams come true. One that inspired me is: Being called hopeless as a composer. Beethoven preferred playing his own composition instead of improving his violin technique. I believe my dream to become a great composer is USA will be come true with the help of my family’s support, having several songs and winning a variety of awards throughout California already. Inspired by Beethoven’s Life, I created this song entailed, ‘Endeavor’.” LITERATURE dakota’s Words Kelsey Bond Seventh Grade Isaac Sowers Middle School Fourth District My name is Dakota Henshaw, and my life is anything but normal. After all, having cerebral palsy doesn’t make for a very normal life. I live in a house. I eat food. I’m a human being. But I can’t live in that house without someone always there, watching me, making sure I don’t lose my balance or have one of my fits. I can’t eat that food without it first being spoon-fed to me as if I were a baby. And, let’s be honest, most people really don’t see me as a real human being. They talk about me as if I weren’t right there, as if I were deaf or something. They look away when they see me in my wheelchair with my head lolling to one side, my limbs mostly immobile. I can’t control that. It’s not my fault. But the worst part is they think I’m dumb. I mean 78 | Reflections Nature At It’s Finest Greyson Joralemon Eighth Grade Black Mountain Middle School Ninth District “Nature really inspires me because when I look at it, I see a bunch of little organisms working together to form one big being of life. That makes me want to see that happen with our human society. It inspires me to do something about it.” first-class, can’t-tell-mouse-from-elephant stupid. I don’t have the kind of cerebral palsy that affects someone’s intelligence. I can see, read, count and add in my head without a problem. The real problem is that I can’t tell people that. My parents seem to be the only people who believe the details of my diagnosis and know I’m as smart as anyone else, despite skeptical looks from people who have seen me. My first-place regret about having cerebral palsy is that I can’t write. I love words. I love the way they sound and the way they can be twisted, manipulated, and paired with other words to create new worlds of sound, texture, flavor, color, and music. In my head I like to create stories about the things around me. I start with making phrases, then I mush the phrases together into a little story and add onto it. Read the full story in the Reflections Gallery. “I believe that many handicapped are misunderstood so I felt inspired to write a story about one. The character in my story, Dakota, goes through several steps while achieving her dream – Believing, Dreaming and Inspiring.” 2014 California State PTA Convention Program Book AWARD OF EXCELLENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION PHOTOGRAPHY The Beauty is in the details Abby Fenton Seventh Grade Sutter Middle School Third District “The beauty of a person isn’t just about the outside (flower). It’s about all the little details underneath the surface (roots and lily pads) and their background (clouds and sun) that brings out their true beauty. A truly beautiful person can recognize their dreams, believe that they can accomplish them, and inspire others around them to go after their own dreams.” DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY VISUAL ARTS Inspiration Katherine Potz Eighth Grade Valley Middle School Ninth District “Believe, Dream, Inspire… Those are three powerful words. My choreography represents how our generation must inspire the next generation just like we were inspired by the generations before us. We have to inspire them to dream of all the possibilities in life and encourage them to believe in themselves and who they want to be. At the beginning of the dance, I am a little girl and the pillow represents the inspiration that another dancer has passed to me. At the end of the dance I pass on the inspiration to a little girl who represents generations to come.” 2014 California State PTA Convention Program Book The Spark of Inspiration Sung-Joon “Miles” Yun Eighth Grade La Cañada High School 7/8 First District “As I live my life, it is impossible to experience everything in this world. But instead, I read about other people’s experiences from books. I wanted to express this by connecting the pages of the book with the hairs of a human. The lips portray the belief that the book gives us, while the eyes dream. Each of the pages and each of the hairs are connected in a way to convey the message that inspiration comes from books.” Reflections | 79 AWARD OF O F EXCELLENCE HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION VISUAL ARTS Oh, Inverted World Gabrielle Jordan Twelfth Grade Bakersfield High School Seventh District “My piece relates to the theme of reflections because the message I send across is my reflection of what I do now that may affect my future.” PHOTOGRAPHY Locks of Promised Love Steven Newman Eleventh Grade Fremont High School Sixth District “I was walking along a bridge in Prague when I happened upon a small metal grating filled to capacity with locks that caught my eyes. A couple in love takes a lock and writes both their names on it. After the lock is fastened on the bar, the key is tossed into the river. The act represents the permanence of the relationship and the hope, belief, and dream about their future together. This custom is spreading throughout the world and is inspiring more romantic promises and dreams.” MUSICAL COMPOSITION Like It’s Your Last Taylor Austin Twelfth Grade Burbank High School First District CHORUS You never know Never know What will happen tomorrow… So live today like it’s your last. While she was battling the disease, she had amazing faith and belief that she would get better and be okay. She inspired me to live every day of my life to the best of my ability. Because it could be your last.” QUICK FACTS 46 Entries Displayed at Convention 2014 California State PTA Convention Program Book AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FILM PRODUCTION Believe ♦ dream ♦ Inspire: the Story of John, an Artist Yuqiao Zhao Eleventh Grade Arcadia High School First District “To me, the theme reflects the journey undertook by every artist: bravely believing in themselves, chasing a dream that others may find foolish, and sharing their inspiration with the world when success comes. John, as the quintessential wanna be artist, embodies perfectly the spirit of freedom and magical inspiration that defines the world of art – where dreams, no matter how seemingly ridiculous, can be realized.” LITERATURE Love of a different kind Jordyn Yokoyama HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY To This day Renata Retter Twelfth Grade Westlake High School Twelfth District “As someone who is bullied, you have to BELIEVE that your tormentors are wrong about you. Finally, when it’s all over, you must INSPIrE students who are bullied the same way you were. I have done the first two steps in my own life and I hope to inspire others with this piece.” “Love of a Different Kind is a story about a woman looking back on the day that she lost her hearing.
