Each year, students from approximately 41 surrounding communities attend the school, giving strong testimony to the school’s widespread reputation for educational excellence. The school was founded in 1906 by Queene Ferry (Mrs. Avery) Coonley, whose desire to offer an alternative to traditional public institutions was inspired by the educational philosophy of John Dewey and other progressive thinkers of her day. This philosophy is based on the concept that school should encourage a child to become an enthusiastic participant in the learning process. Mrs. Coonley began her first school in a cottage on the Coonley Estate in Riverside, Illinois. The present school facility was built in 1929. Reflecting the belief that education is a lifelong process, the school seeks to instill a sense of joy and excitement about learning at an early age. Hallmarks of an Avery Coonley School education include small class size, an accomplished and dedicated faculty, and a wide spectrum of learning opportunities. The challenging curriculum is designed to foster critical and creative thinking, selfreliance, and concern for others. 3 Table of Contents Welcome About The Avery Coonley School Welcome With Thanks Evening Schedule Menu Auction Committee, Volunteers, and Staff Acknowledgements Fleur de Lis Society Special Recognition Individual and Business Donors Grandparent Donors The ACS Class of 2001 A Salute to ACS Students A Salute to ACS Faculty and Staff A Tribute to Past Auction Chairs Auction The Auctioneer Fund-A-Need Tuition Raffle Pick of the Live Raffle Centerpiece Auction Class Memory Books Live Auction Silent Auction Basket Boutique Party Boutique POPportunities Rules and Services Rules and Purchase Information Services Directory 3 7 8 9 10 11 14 15 16 21 22 24 28 29 31 32 34 35 36 37 38 51 85 91 95 105 108 5 6 Welcome DEAR FRIENDS OF THE AVERY COONLEY SCHOOL, It is our great pleasure to welcome you to our 29th Annual Auction, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This year’s event holds special significance because it marks the return of our auction to campus for the first time since 2006. It seems only fitting that as we gather as a community to celebrate our children, we do so in their home away from home – The Avery Coonley School. Our actions and interactions in this magical setting will truly transform this beautiful evening into A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The auction is a wonderful example of the dedication and talent of our parent volunteers. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the auction chairs, Laura Heimburger and John Harrast. They have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the school through their leadership. A great debt of gratitude is also due to the committee chairs as well as the sea of auction volunteers whose collective efforts are so clearly visible tonight. From securing auction donations to assembling beautiful baskets to transforming this cloister into what you see before you, the auction chairs, committee chairs, and volunteers have been hard at work for months. On behalf of the school, we thank you and congratulate you on your remarkable efforts. The commitment of our many donors is critical to the success of the auction. We would like to acknowledge the very generous support of the many parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, businesses and friends who donated to this year’s auction. This event would not be possible without you, and the pages of this catalog are a testament to your extraordinary generosity. The philanthropic spirit established by Mrs. Coonley lives on through you today. Enjoy the evening, celebrate with old friends and make new ones, and remember that we are all here tonight to support the children of The Avery Coonley School. Your commitment to the school’s program and mission is greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a wonderful evening! Paul Barton HEAD OF SCHOOL William W. Heun CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES 7 With Thanks DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THE AVERY COONLEY SCHOOL, Welcome to A Midsummer Night’s Dream! As stewards of the 29th Annual Auction for the 105-year-old Avery Coonley School, we are keenly aware of the significance of the event to our historic school. This evening is the time we all come together to raise the necessary funding for our children’s education, celebrate the school and its students as a community, and bring home some fabulous items. Tonight, all of us have multiple opportunities to win while supporting the school. These opportunities include: • Tuition Raffle • Pick of the Live Raffle • 41 POPportunities Raffle Items • Four Parties Available for Sign-up • Class Memory Books for each ACS Group • 180 Silent (via iPod) Auction Items including 30 Baskets to take home • 11 Live Auction Items We encourage you to try your luck at each of the Raffles, sign up for one or more Parties, purchase a Class Memory Book, and bid high and often during the Silent and Live Auctions as all proceeds from this evening provide direct support to ACS and our children’s education! In preparing for this evening, we have been humbled by the munificence of the ACS community. We are extremely grateful to all contributors for your financial and in-kind gifts. Your generosity has made this event possible. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the auction committee chairs and all volunteers. The examples you have set through your leadership, talent, and dedication have been inspiring. We raise a glass tonight to Joan Sunseri and her development staff. Their professionalism, expertise, and tireless efforts have made all the difference. We express our sincere respect to the past auction chairs who have built this event so successfully over almost three decades. We can only hope that our stewardship of the event has been able to rise to the high level you have established. Now, “awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth!” Enjoy A Midsummer Night’s Dream! In addition, John regularly performs onsite appraisals and serves as an auctioneer. He serves on the Auxiliary Board of the Joffrey Ballet and regularly conducts auctions for charitable organizations. We are proud to welcome Mr. Walcher to lead our Live Auction. With special thanks to Leslie Hindman, ACS Honorary Trustee and Alumna of the Class of 1968, for her great support of the 29th Annual Auction. 31 Fund-a-Need “In its reliance upon expression as the key to development the school finds great resources in the arts. The children are led to see the art possibilities of their environment and are given opportunity to create with words and with colors, to express themselves through the medium of song, the drama, and the dance…” Gertrude Hartman Finding Wisdom: Chronicles of a School of Today, 1938 32 The performing arts have played a central role in the Avery Coonley School experience from the beginning. Our alumni—yesterday’s students—fondly recall class plays and musical performances, and often cite the skills and confidence they acquired on the stage as contributing greatly to their success in life, regardless of their career path. Today’s students likewise look forward with immense anticipation to their turn in the spotlight; fortunately, these opportunities occur with great regularity during each child’s ACS journey. With your help, tomorrow’s students will experience these same benefits and share these same transformative moments. As part of the 1993 building addition, an outstanding venue was created to enhance these remarkable and important student performances. The Performing Arts Center is home to many of the school’s most memorable events. Each year the PAC hosts orchestra and choral concerts, class plays, the Thanksgiving Program, and weekly Gatherings. The space plays a key role in the Native American Fair, Shakespeare Fest and Greek Fest, and the World’s Fair. First Group students take center stage with their circus, Third Group performs their annual play, and Eighth Group students share their final starring role at graduation. Nearly twenty years after its opening, and after hundreds of memorable performances, it is time for us to focus our attention on the PAC itself. The theater’s lighting system is original and in desperate need of significant upgrade. Funds raised this evening will go towards the purchase and installation of a new state-of-the art lighting board. In addition, we will acquire new orchestra chairs, and a high quality electric piano. These improvements go beyond the cosmetic and routine. Each year, a significant portion of the 8th Group class joins the Tech Club, providing valuable behind-the-scenes support for PAC functions. With the new lighting board, which is equivalent to the ones at area high schools, these students will be better able to provide these services and also learn technical skills that will benefit them in the future. Likewise, the new orchestra chairs will not only add a professional look, but will also help to improve the posture and technique of our already accomplished musicians, and the additional piano will add flexibility and create new opportunities for the music program. As other schools are forced to cut programs in the arts, this project is a tribute to both the vision and generosity of the ACS family. For us, the performing arts can never be an expendable extracurricular, but rather are a central part of who we are and what we do. With your support, we can ensure that the students of today—and tomorrow—will have a setting worthy of their efforts and talents. Thank you for raising your paddles in support of this important cause! 33 Tuition Raffle TUITION RAFFLE This year we are welcoming back the Tuition Raffle and your chance to Split the Pot! NEXT: THE EXPLORATION OF WORLD CUISINE At Alinea, multi-award winner chef/owner Grant Achatz is famed for his inventive preparations and understanding of dining as art, science, innovation, and curiosity. Now he brings all of his experience to a new level of cuisine at Next Restaurant. Next Restaurant will explore world cuisine. It will serve four menus per year from great moments in culinary history or the future. Their team of chefs will investigate, test, refine, and present authentic menu interpretations from cultures, places, and times. Depending on the cuisine, meals will be five to six courses and will include food, beverage pairings, and service. Their goal each season is to present the best possible menu from each culinary inspiration. They want to take diners on a journey to the foods they find exciting, delicious, and important. Next Restaurant will not use reservations; their bookings will be made more like a theater or a sporting event. A very limited number of tickets will be available for purchase via lottery and only two walk-in tables will be available every evening. Next door to the restaurant is The Aviary. The Aviary is neither a bar nor a lounge exactly. Or perhaps it is a bar without a bar or bartenders. Or a lounge without the attitude of a lounge. There are chefs and a kitchen producing drinks. The drinks will be innovative, beautiful, and consistent. Some will be classics, others will be informed by the menu at Next, still others will be something else entirely. Your evening of fine dining for four people will start with cocktails at The Aviary. You will then move next door for dinner, paired with wine, at Next. The date of this dining experience was not available at the date of printing. A specific date will be known by the time the auction takes place. LIVE AUCTION RULES The Live Auction will begin at approximately 9:00 p.m. and will continue until all items have been sold. • All items in the Live Auction are numbered, and the auction will proceed by item number. • Your registration folder contains your paddle number. This is your personal identification number for bidding. • To enter a bid, signal the auctioneer by raising your paddle number. • During the Live Auction, the auctioneer will determine the successful bidder. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion in determining the successful bidder or in reoffering the item in dispute. • To avoid disappointment, and as a courtesy to donors, winning bidders should contact the donors of vacation condos and homes, dinners, hotel packages, and all other services as soon as possible after the auction to make necessary arrangements. In some cases, the donors of items have determined a “reserve by date” that must be followed. Please abide by any item restrictions, including available dates, as required by the donor. If no restrictions are provided, all services must be used within one year of the auction (May 14, 2012). • Auction donors are extremely generous. Please do not request changes to the items offered. Any questions about the item should be directed to the ACS Office of Development. 105 Rules and Purchase Information RULES REGARDING VACATION PROPERTIES Donors of vacation condos and homes are sharing a very special possession with the auction. At 11:00 p.m. guests can claim their items at the check-out table. All purchasers will receive a receipt of purchases the week following the auction. TAX DEDUCTIBILITY OF PURCHASES The Internal Revenue Code requires The Avery Coonley School to inform auction patrons of the tax deductibility of their auction contributions. If, with respect to any contribution or purchase made by you to The Avery Coonley School, you receive goods or services, your contribution is deductible for federal income tax purposes only to the extent that its value exceeds the fair market value of the goods or services received by you. For purposes of determining the tax deductibility for the purchase of auction items, the following is advised: • Dollar values listed in this catalog and its addendum are as stated by the donor or are the auction committee’s good faith estimate of each item’s fair market value. • If there is no stated dollar value to an item, your post-auction statement from the school will include the school’s good faith estimate of value of any item for which the school is able to make such an estimate. If no good faith estimate of value can reasonably be made for an item, its fair market value is the price at which it is sold. The cost of raffle tickets is not tax deductible. Raffle prizes that are (a) $600 or more and (b) at least 300 times the amount of the wager are considered taxable income. The school is required to file a W2G tax form. Forms will be distributed to raffle winners for whom tax reporting is required on auction night. Completion of the form is required before the prizes can be released to the winner. Please consult your own tax advisor for further explanation or advice as to the tax deductibility of your contributions to The Avery Coonley School. 107 The ACS Services Directory Advertisers for this year’s auction will be presented in a separate publication, The ACS Services Directory, which will be shared with the school’s community.
