From the Chairman’s Pen
Under the excellent leadership and
joint hard work of the directors and
presidents of previous terms, the chamber is maintaining the objective of promoting local businesses, stimulating
economic development, and coordinating relationships between political leaders for increasing mutual benefits.
Therefore, the chamber has become an
important force in the society that cannot be ignored.
Based on the membership, the League City Chamber of Commerce is composed of 700+ members. Under categories listed in
the League City Chamber directory, there are more than 240 classifications of business doing business in League City that are dependent on economic vitality. That is the reason that the chamber
is involved in economic development in the following ways.
• Provides guidance and support on issues concerning
League City’s economic growth and development.
• Collects advice from the commercial sector and actively
provides suggestions to committees working on League
City initiatives.
• Researches issues and certifies origin and benefit to the
business community.
• Promotes and provides information for an informed decision to the membership.
Business owners that live in League City will have an opportunity to vote on an important issue on the November 6 ballot.
The issue is for the creation of a Municipal Economic Development District (MEDD) for the adoption of a ¼ cent sales tax.
Now before you make your decision how you will vote on Proposition 1, here are some of the facts:
• Mostly shoppers in League City will fund this ¼ cent tax
and the estimated cost to League City residents is $26 a
year…(household not person).
• Since most of the cities in the Gulf Coast have adopted
the sales tax (Webster, Kemah, Galveston, Nassau Bay, Clear Lake
Shores, Pearland, Hitchcock, LaMarque, LaPorte, Pearland,
Seabrook, Sugar Land, Texas City, Santa Fe) and if you have
shopped in any of those locations you are already paying it, just
not to the benefit of League City.
• The addition of the MEDD would diversify League City’s
tax base which could help reduce the property tax rate.
• The ¼ cent sales tax can only be spent on authorized
projects by an appointed board consisting of a minimum of 4
persons. The money would be used to fund infrastructure to attract businesses.
Looking for more answers? Contact the League City Chamber.
As we move toward the future, the direction, vitality and quality
of life in League City is dependent on all of us. Let’s move forward by considering Proposition 1 and how it would benefit
League City.

Update on the 2007 League City Leadership Class
The class began May 11, 2007 at South Shore Harbour Resort
and Conference Center. Shawn Bailey President of AMOCO Federal Credit Union and board member for the League City Chamber
of Commerce kicked off the class by introducing Dr. Dotti Jones as
the facilitator for the class. Dr. Jones is the Director of Business
Continuing Education and International Development at College of
the Mainland.
The first days session, the topics of discussion were the importance of leadership, responsibilities of leadership, what it takes to be

lunch a site visit was made to League City council chambers. Chris
Reed, City Administrator, gave the class an overview of a city council meeting and then gave them an assignment. Part of the class was
city council members and the remaining class members were local
residents. Their assignment was to approve the budget. The month
of August, the topic for class was Tourism. Speakers for the morning included Rick Wade with Destination League City and Roy Green
with South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center. After lunch
the class went for a site visit to the new Bayport Cruise Terminal.

MUNICIPAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT con’t from page 1
The City Council, by a unanimous vote, the Economic
Development Corporation and the League City Chamber
of Commerce support this initiative in order to create a dedicated source of funding that will help recruit the types of businesses and desirable jobs that citizens want in our city. The
benefits to you and your organization are:
• In the first year, the additional ¼ cent sales tax will generate approximately $1.1million in revenue for economic
development
• Allow our City to compete for businesses that will create high paying jobs
• Help diversify our tax base and could help reduce the
City’s property tax rate
· The annual cost to the average League City household
would only be $26 per year
The Committee FOR a Better League City is a group
of volunteer citizens and business people who support passage of this proposal. Our goal is to educate the voters of
League City on the benefits of this Municipal Economic
Development District. Your support, and the support of
your business will help tremendously in fulfilling our vision of a “YES” vote on what will be known as Proposition 1. We are in need of voter support from our area’s
most respected community leaders so that we can get our
message out to the League City community. We thank you,
in advance, for your support. For more information on
Prop 1 go to www.leaguecityprop1.com.
