FLOWER ARRANGING
From the CEO
I am very excited to report that Edmiston
Jones GBB Architects have been
commissioned to develop the concept plan for
Stage 4 of Banksia Village.
Stage 4, which will be situated on the
remaining land on the northwest boundary, will
be a capstone development that will
significantly enhance Banksia’s current
offering. The development will incorporate
additional residential retirement living and
potentially extend to include a range of
ancillary lifestyle facilities and professional services. Our recent market research
will inform our thinking as we consider options for the new development, and we will
also be consulting with residents through the planning process.
Edmiston Jones are highly regarded in their field, and have a strong track record in
the aged care sector. They have also been involved in a number of sector-based
research projects including studies with the University of Wollongong, IRT and
others. We are looking forward to working with Edmiston Jones and other highly
qualified professionals and suppliers through the concept planning phase.
2016 Golf Day
Preparation for our annual charity Golf Day is now well underway. The event will be
held on Friday 16 September at Moruya Golf Course, with a Shot Gun start at
8:30 a.m.
ActewAGL has generously agreed to be the main sponsor for the event, and has
also donated a number of prizes for presentation on the day. Other sponsors are
starting to sign up, and we are anticipating another successful day this year. We are
very grateful for the support of our suppliers and friends for events such as this, with
all funds raised on the day directed to our residential aged care facility and invested
in programs to benefit our residents.
Flyers, including all registration information, will be distributed to residents next
week, and an advertisement will be published in the Bay Post on 31 August.
Grevillea Pool
As recently advised, the Grevillea Pool and Gym are now open again for use.
Thank you for your understanding and patience while we have worked to find a
permanent solution for what proved to be quite a complex problem.

Over the course of two sessions
Joy Grace has instructed and
delighted about 30 ladies in the
art of flower arranging -- both
traditional Western and
Japanese Ikebana styles.
In the first session Joy told us a
little of the history of Ikebana.
One amazing fact was that up
until the mid 1800's Ikebana was
practised only by men!
Also In this first session, and
using mainly native plants, Joy
showed us how to make and
wrap a traditional bunch of
flowers and also how to arrange
flowers in a box container.
Ladies were invited to make an
arrangement of their own to take
home. The front counters at
both the Admin. Office and the
Lodge were recipients of two of
Joy's lovely creations.
In the second session Joy
demonstrated a simple, but
stunning, traditional table centre
arrangement using mainly
natives. Then another three or
Photos: Julie Knight (above) ,
four Ikebanas — each one quite David Bourke (below)
different in style and using
variety of containers.
As in the first session and under
the guidance of Joy, ladies were
invited to "have a go" and make
an arrangement to take home.
Once again the Admin. Office
and Lodge were lucky recipients
of some of Joy's creativity.
Thanks also go to Joy's son Jeff
for his help in gathering and
delivering the beautiful flowers
etc., that made the two
mornings so special. Thank you
Joy!

In your Garden
Hello Folks!
Welcome to the September edition of the Bugle, and welcome to
Spring!!
Spring is the traditional time of growth and renewal. The weather is
getting warmer but there are still cold days, rainy weather and
winds to contend with, so don’t put your winter woollies away just
yet.
So what can we do to get our gardens ready for another prolific
summer?
The picture above is of new maintenance staff. They are Brad
Fletcher (beanie, who joined in January); Brendan Walsh (the hat,
joined last November) and Tristan Bradshaw (joined August 1 and is
employed temporarily until Christmas). They are happy cheerful fellows
and look forward to continued association with Banksia Village. They
were busy on the day I took the photo, having changed or cleaned 220
smoke alarm batteries, 442 Air filters, 122 Bathroom filters and checked
122 garage doors.

Things to do this month:

Feed hibiscus with fertilizer and spray with white oil to
control young harlequin bugs. Do not feed citrus trees till
after flowering is complete;

Check tomatoes daily for watering, but never wet the foliage;

Remove spent flowers from annuals, this stimulates continuous
flowering;

Check and repair irrigation systems;

Mulch garden beds and pot plants;

Plant vegetables – Beetroot, Cabbages, Capsicum, Carrots ,
Cucumber, Wombok, Lettuce, Spring Onions, Potatoes, Silver
Beet, Tomatoes (YUM)!

Prune native shrubs and trees.
There are lots of seasonal chores to start
in spring so these activities should keep
you all busy in the garden this month.
Your Residents’ Committee:
Bill Reid (Chairperson) Dave Bourke (Secretary)
Members: Beverly Burnes, Ken Carey, Glennah Castle, Joe Pirronello, Robyn Smith
and Barbara Usher.
The function of this committee is to meet regularly, discuss issues with management
and seek resolution of any matters requiring attention.
If you are not satisfied with a response to your request for service or assistance, you
should firstly approach the responsible staff member or supervisor for explanation or
rectification of the issue. If the matter remains unresolved after doing this, then it may
be referred to the Residents’ Committee for attention.

BANKSIA SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT
AUGUST 2016

John and I were away cruising along our beautiful Australian coastline,
which we enjoyed enormously, but we missed out on CHRISTMAS IN
JULY’s very happy and successful evening. Christmas trees came out
(Richard’s speciality — hand-made wooden trees) and Jacqueline’s
collection of decorations which she keeps for these special occasions.
.
At the soup night there were ten beautiful soups, supplied by Sandra,
Denise, Dianne, Jacqueline, Bev, Liz, Glennah, Mary and Pam. Thank
you all so much. I understand the pea soup was very popular, thanks to
Judy Fergie’s special Microwave recipe. Thanks also to everyone who
helped in the kitchen. There were 60 people in attendance for that
meeting.
I missed Joy’s Flower Arranging demonstrations which I understand were
fantastic – It is amazing what can be done with just one flower stem,
some tortured willow and a few leaves. I have heard from attendees how
much pleasure and interest was stimulated by these sessions and I hope
that Joy will consider giving more at some future date. (See page 11 for
pictures and description of these events by Fay Fergie — ed.)
On Saturday August 20th we held our birthday Bash — another
successful festivity in Grevillea with 90 people attending — a great
response from all residents. The Committee thanks everyone for their
great support.
If any of you have good ideas for further classes, get-togethers,
luncheons etc., please feel free to offer them to any Committee member
for discussion at our next meeting. Suggestions are most welcome.

BANKSIA’S BIRTHDAY BASH
CENSUS
A familiar figure visited Banksia
in August. None other than our
former CEO Phil Armstrong, in
his official capacity as Census
Officer. He is pictured on the
right in our living room,
delivering our Census materials.
Later that day Phil and his
assistant conducted a Question
and Answer session in the
Grevillea Centre where they
also provided assistance to
residents who were unsure of
their ability to complete the
Census papers.
