OCTOBER 2015 Lincoln Junior High Leopard Paw Print Volume 3 Issue 1 BWHS is Here! Bentonville West High School is the new high school being built in Centerton. It is scheduled to open August 2016. The principal of BWHS is Jonathon Guthrie, former Lincoln Junior High School principal. Mr. Guthrie has worked for the Bentonville school district since 2006. He says that in order for a school to function properly, it’s about finding the right teachers. "Great teachers make great schools. Studies show it's all about the teachers and then obviously about the students, but for me it's about getting the right teachers in place,” Guthrie said. He states that when starting a new school it is important for everyone to work together. "This is your building. It's your school. We're going to work together. We all have the same goal here, which is when those students leave Bentonville West High School, and when they graduate we want them to be able to walk into any college, any work place, and be ready to roll,” says Mr. Guthrie. Around 1,300 ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders will begin the fall 2016 school year at BWHS. All of the orchestra students are practicing hard for their first concert this year. For eighth grade they have three total concerts plus they have to go to a competition in Branson this spring. Many of the orchestra players are excited for the trip to Branson. The trip will help a lot of players get to know what happens if they want to audition for All-Region in the future or just playing competitions in general. The orchestra auditioned for the all-region competition this past Halloween. All-Region is a competition between students that come together to form an inter-school orchestra. This year the orchestra includes students from some brass and percussion instrumentalists. Erik Mains said that he “hoped to make All-Region because it is a lot of fun and it feels great to win.” Brigham Hill knew that it would be a lot of fun to get up and perform! In order to perform in the orchestra those auditioning first performed an audition piece for a panel of blind judges in a closed audition. After two weeks of practice, members of the All-Region orchestra spent two days at an All-Region clinic and performed for an audience that day. They build and program their own robots. Then they compete with them. Lynnzie Hart is on the robotics team Bri Scallion working on a part of the team’s BEST because she has “always been intrigued by robot. technology and wanted to learn how to code. I’ve always thought robot fighting was cool too.” The team worked on their robot, Leslie, for the BEST competition. That took place on October 17th in Fort Smith. The team built the robot “by using the design process and experimenting to see what worked,” Maddison Solis explained. They met a total of 16 hours a week to prepare for the competition. They met for two hours every day after school and for six hours every Saturday. Bri Scallion said that all of the hard work would pay off in the end “because it’s fun.” Bri also said that “when you build your robot, you get to meet your teammates, and hanging out with them is fun! It also teaches you skills that people will pay high money for in the end. So, basically yes, robotics is totally worth it in the end.” Robotics Team Lynnzie Hart Nathan Dayfingil Matt Suedel Bri Scallion Sergio Garza Louis Plaisance Maddison Solis Marianna Melinkova Maggie Hemmer Tim Suedel Ethan Forman Nicholas DeVilliera Todd Neal Chase Peterson Coach, Mr. Roberts Cayden Lewis Brett Shaddick Kieran Groom Jayden Heilig Article By: Jaylin Kern Fall Choir Events Fall is here. The crisp air and falling leaves are tell tale signs of it. Along with it comes the annual fall choir concert. The fall concert was on October 13 at 6:30. Advanced choir students and a few select choir student from Washington, Lincoln, and Fulbright Junior High choirs met at Gracepoint church to perform. The choirs rehearsed with guest directors before the concert. All of the students had been practicing All-Region music in their schools before, but the directors united the schools and gave astounding performances. Also on Saturday, October 24, the choir students left Lincoln at 6:30am to go to Siloam Springs High School for All-Region tryouts. There were over 1,000 students that tried out! Among these there were only a limited few who were accepted to participate in the music-laden clinic. Lincoln had the most students make the All-Region Choir out of all the other area junior highs with 26 students making the choir and 11 students making the alternate list. Those who were accepted into All-Region will be performing on November 7th at Springdale High school. The choir is not done yet! In the near future the students will be performing at the December 8th Holiday concert. Don’t miss out on the holiday concert.
