Brethren:
I am proud to report that Redwood Lodge is off to a great start. Over
the last few months the officers have been diligently working on the
internal organization of the lodge. In lodge we have discussed topics
such as membership projections, lodge expenses, revenue strategies,
By-Law edits, charitable donations, candidate fees, lodge interactions within the
Metro district, as well as the events calendar for the year. The strength of any
organization is built up and maintained by the amount of active involvement from
its members. In order for Redwood to have continued success and growth, its
members need to take an active role. If you haven’t been to Lodge in a while, I
cordially invite you to stop in. We welcome your input.
At the last meeting we held our annul Redwood Steak fry for dinner. I thank all the
officers for their assistance with everything to cooking to cleaning up. It was good to
see everyone participating in making this annual event such a success.
I will be trying something a little different for October’s dinner and meeting. Some
of the dinner attendees have requested that we try to reduce the cost. I have taken
this into consideration and have planned for this month’s dinner to be grilled pizza.
The pizza will be prepared by me and some of the officers from St. Johns Providence.
The dinner cost will be $12.00 per person and a reservation will be required.
This month I will be continuing the theme of “getting to know Redwood” by having
discussions about the history of our lodge from different members perspectives
through the years. I’m hoping that learning about past practices will be both
entertaining and enlightening for all members, old and new. I invite all brothers to
share their stories and experiences of being members of Redwood Lodge.
I look forward to seeing you in October!

Editor’s Note
Freemasonry has survived for over 250 years
on this side of the pond. Redwood Lodge
No. 35 is celebrating its 137th year.
Redwood was constituted in 1878 with Bro.
Meyer Noot serving as its first Worshipful
Master.
Freemasonry in Rhode Island
continues to flourish while many other
fraternal organizations have withered from
the landscape.
What allurement allows
freemasonry to continue? Freemasonry has
encountered many obstacles, but somehow
it survives. A few lodges have gone dark or
merged with others, but freemasonry is still
shining bright.
Everything seems to occur in cycles and
freemasonry is no exception. It began as a
brotherhood of a few and grew into the
premier fraternal organization in the world.
At its beginning, the number of its members
were small. As the fraternity developed and
attracted more attention, the number of its
members began to multiply reaching a peak
in the years following the end of World War
II. The number of members has been on
the decline as the members from that surge
began to age. The fraternity is not able to
attract enough candidates to replace those
members who have moved on.
The ritual, which is the integral part of each
meeting, has basically remained unchanged
over the years. Each grand jurisdiction has
adopted its own version of their ritual, but
basically it is the same for all jurisdictions
including that for new initiates.
The
business of each lodge is conducted very
similar.
Most lodges present various
programs during their stated communication
and schedule special meetings for conferring
the three degrees upon new candidates. For
many years, the stated communications
consisted of conferring the various degrees
upon the candidates. Even with the same
repetition, freemasonry survived.
Some lodges are more socially active than
others. They hold outside social events
which are open to the families or partners of
the members. For many lodges, the outside
social events such as dinner dances, which
had been a great allurement, have faded
into obscurity.
The lodge remains a place for brethren to
dwell together as brethren. A sort of safety
net. Freemasonry is not for everyone. For
those that choose to belong, it is a very
rewarding experience. It lifts your inner soul
and satisfies that desire to live and act in a
moral code with the goal to assist others and
to improve society in general. Freemasonry
does not offer any exciting or fancy benefits.
It does not provide any financial reward to
its members, but it does provide a sense of
accomplishment, self-satisfaction and
belonging.
