Sailing classes through the Clearwater Community Sailing Association or Clearwater Sail & Power Squadron offer safe boating courses for a nominal fee. Don’t get caught! A Florida fishing license is required for non-Florida residents 16 years and older. There are two licenses, freshwater and saltwater, depending on the type of fish caught. Underwater Exploration Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular pastimes and there are more than ten artificial inshore and offshore reefs along the coast. P You can spot manatees, otters, dolphins and alligators. inellas County has 15 sites officially designated as portions of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Over 2,000 miles long and including over 480 species, the Trail was formed to promote bird watching, environmental education and eco tourism. Sand Key Park houses the base of operations for the artificial reef program. On the beach sea turtles annually deposit eggs while the CMA tracks their progress. Dogs are welcome in the dog park but not on the beach. Unspoiled Brooker Creek Preserve is home to more than 160 bird species, 20 amphibians, 50 reptiles and 40 mammals. Its Environmental Education Center is a treasure trove of information. Explore nature trails, a nine-mile wilderness trail and a horseback trail. Boyd Hill Nature Preserve offers more than three miles of trails and boardwalks representing various ecosystems within 245 acres of natural beauty and is on the Great Florida Birding Trail. It has an aviary for birds of prey and an environmental education center that provides programs on natural history topics. Weedon Island Preserve is a rich mosaic of mangrove forests, open salt flats, pine flat woods and oak hammock. Its 3,164 acres include the Cultural and National Historic Center featuring Native American culture. Rent a kayak, hike trails or stroll the elevated boardwalk to glimpse an intimate view of the flora and fauna. Shell Key Preserve is a 1,755 acre sanctuary and refuge to the American oystercatcher, snowy plover and black skimmer. Ninety-five acres have been set aside for nesting, migrating and wintering birds. Choose from swimming, fishing and kayaking through the three-mile mangrove shaded trail or hike the nature trails, picnic or eat at Café Caladesi. Ferry service to the island departs from Honeymoon Island State Park. Boat dockage is available during the day as well as “boat camping” overnight. Nowhere else but at Big Cat Rescue can one be face to face with more than 130 huge felines and 20 plus species of exotic and endangered cats. Some of the more unusual ones include snow leopards, geoffroy cats, siberian lynx and servals. The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary cares for common as well as rare primate species. Unique ones include vervet monkey and the lesser spotted guenon. The mild winter weather means you can be outdoors all year round. Test your skills at one of the many semi-private and public courses challenging even the most experienced golfer. There is no charge at municipal courts throughout the area. The United States Tennis Association has named the McMullen Tennis Complex one of the top five facilities in the country. The Long Center boasts the only indoor 50 meter aquatic facility on Florida’s west coast, and is recognized as an official Olympic training facility. The Clearwater Beach Library & Recreation Complex offers a fitness center, three lighted tennis courts, lighted basketball courts, a seasonal swimming pool, a boat launch and a beautifully landscaped waterfront park perfect for reading, fishing and picnics. It was one of only two United States sites for the FIVB World Beach Championships, the series that determined who played in the Summer Olympics. You wanna bet? Greyhounds race all year on a rotating basis in two locations - St. Petersburg and Sarasota. Derby Lane in St. Petersburg offers live poker and Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa provides various games of chance. Early settlers called it Clear Water Harbor, a name that eventually became Clearwater. Thousands of American Indians once lived along the bodies of water now known as Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Several areas feature mounds dating from 500 B.C. to 1500 A.D. One of the best examples can be found at the Weedon Island Preserve in northeast St. Petersburg. Currently it serves as the home for the Clearwater Historical Society and the Plumb House Museum. Both St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) and Tampa International Airport (TIA) have a reputation as travelerfriendly airports. They have shuttles and rental cars available when you land. Within a 90 minute drive from Clearwater is Orlando International Airport. The Amtrak Station in downtown Tampa brings rail travelers in closest proximity to the Clearwater region. Greyhound operates a terminal in Clearwater. Once on land there are car rental agencies, taxis and private limousines that will assist you in reaching your destination. Dial 511 (a free call) 24 hours a day, to get detailed information on traffic conditions on the interstates and major roads throughout Tampa Bay. It’s legal to turn right on red unless a sign indicates otherwise. Please buckle up. It’s the law and it’s the safe thing to do. Remember to turn on your headlights if driving in the rain. The speed limit is radar enforced. 36 Many areas have parking meters and they are strictly enforced. Do not back into parking spaces. The rear license plate must be visible. Clearwater’s public transportation system, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) is a convenient way to get around. Buses run frequently, fares are extremely reasonable and the routes cover all the major shopping and beach areas. Although everything is within easy walking distance, it is fun to ride the Jolley Trolley with the friendly drivers pointing out interesting sights. The beach route operates 7 days a week every 30 minutes starting at 10am. The coastal route includes downtown Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs and operates Friday-Sunday every hour.
