Welcome! Vitaemo!
Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival is Four! We're proud of what we've accomplished
for Lamont County, for the Village of Andrew, for Ukrainians and wannabes in this short
time! Whether you're a first-timer or have been with us since Day One, thank you.
Without you…..it's pointless. And impossible.
This year marks the start of a two-year celebration of the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian
immigration and settlement in Canada. Iwan Pylypow began what would become five
major waves of immigration. Canada is still home to the 3rd largest Ukrainian
population after Ukraine and Russia.
August 24th will mark the 25th anniversary of Ukraine's
Independence. We pray for long awaited peace in the
country of our ancestors.
Join us as we mark these important milestones in typical
Babas & Borshch fashion.

The Spirit of 1891
On September 9, 1891, two fellow villagers from
Nebyliv (in present day western Ukraine, also
known as Halychyna), Vasyl Ilyniak and Iwan
Pylypow disembarked from the SS Oregon at
Quebec City. They had heard about “Free Lands” in
Canada and decided to pursue a new opportunity.
The two travelled together as far as Winnipeg.
Ilyniak connected with German farmers originally
from Halychyna in the outlying areas, and arranged
to learn what “homesteading” was all about. He
remained in the area that became known as Gretna. By the end of September, Pylypow went
westward to investigate other regions of Western Canada, to see where it would be best to
take up land. He made it as far as Calgary by train, then moved on to Edmonton.
At the end of November, Pylypow had decided to return to Nebyliv to retrieve his family and
return to Canada to live.
Back in Halychyna, Pylypow eagerly spread the news of the vast lands in Western Canada.
The news was now circulating throughout Nebyliv and other parts of Ukraine: “Go to Canada!
Some of our people are already there, near a place called Edmonton, at Edna post office.”
This marked the beginning of first wave of immigration from Ukraine to Canada. The
determined spirit of these Ukrainian trailblazers set the tone for more families, and five
waves of immigration to Canada. Join us as Ukrainian-Canadians begin to commemorate
and celebrate this part of our shared, national history.
Written by Radomir Bilash, National Historian, Ukrainian Canadian Congress
“KANADA- UKRAINA 125”
by Oleh Lesiuk
This logo commemorates 125 years of Ukrainian immigration to
Canada. The logo consists of three parts. The bottom part symbolizes
four Waves of immigration to Canada. These are the waves of the
ocean to be overcome, the waves of people that brought new hopes
and dreams to a new land. In the central part of the logo people
transform into the three flying cranes. These powerful, intelligent and
enduring birds appear often in Ukrainian music and folklore and are
known in Canada as well. Zhuravli, as they are called in Ukrainian,
are a long-standing symbol of migrating from one's own nest to travel
to far lands, possibly never to return again. The group of cranes
symbolizes a family as a foundation of society. Once settled in a new
land they strive to desired heights. The national crest of Ukraine –
the Golden Trident (Tryzub), superimposed on a blue crane,
symbolizes the country of origin. The wings of the cranes ultimately
transform into a Maple Leaf – the national symbol of Canada. The
Logo courtesy Ukrainian
number “125” indicates 125 years of immigration to Canada.

I Am Ukrainian-Canadian
Hey, I'm not a bohunk, or a kozak...
I don't live in a burdai or eat solonyna, or wear a babushka...
and I don't know Teklia, Hryhory, or Paraska from Ukraine,
although I'm certain they're really, really nice.
I have a Baba & Dido, not a grandma & grandpa.
I speak Ukrainian, not Russian.
And I pronounce it 'pyrohy' not 'perogy.'
My ancestors fought for the right to their own flag.
I believe in independence, not oppression,
freedom, not corruption,
and that Borshch is a gift from God.
A pich is an oven, a kurka is a chicken,
And it's pronounced horilka not vodka, horilka!!!
Canada is the envy of the world!
Beautiful and fiercely proud
and the best part of North America
My name is Bohdan!!
And I am a Ukrainian-Canadian!!!!
(Inspired by Molson’s I am Canadian)
