We really do need
each other...
OPPA Board of Directors
President:
Michael Propst, Vernon Sales Promotion
E-Mail: michael.propst@vernoncompany.com
I believe most of us were raised with the saying, “No man is an
island to himself.” The great truth is there are more
interconnections than we probably will ever know, and we really
do need each other in order to grow.
It's hard for me to believe, but in October I will have been in the
promotional advertising industry for 24 years. It would take all the
pages of this newsletter, and then some, to thank every person who
has helped me grow into the representative I am today. I think of
countless suppliers who have taken their precious time to explain
their products and/or processes, ways to benefit our customers in
the use of these products to promote their businesses. Leaders
within my organization who patiently stepped me through
learning processes of selling and marketing so I would be the most
beneficial to my clients. It took a few years into my selling in the
industry to respect how much I could learn from my
competitor/colleagues, and what a benefit I could also be to them
without detracting from my own income and business.

salespeople. What an awesome benefit we have in our shows, our
education sessions, and even our social activities where ideas are
birthed.

the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life--is now a cause for panic and
you turn around to go and get it.
9. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

Industry efforts at product safety and
compliance must go beyond
children's products
In an online blog entitled, “What Matters Most Is Protecting Your Customer,” Rick Brenner, CEO of Prime Line® (Prime
Resources Corp.) and a leading authority on industry product safety issues, contends that distributors should protect their
clients' most valuable asset the logo going on the product by only selling products that comply with CPSIA limits for lead
and phthalates. This is regardless of whether or not a product is technically considered a children's product and is especially
important if the product in question may be used by children of any age.
According to CPSC's definition of a children's product, Brenner explains, “If a product appeals mostly to young
children, it's a children's product. If the same product appeals to everyone, even if it's going to be used by young children, it's
considered a general use product.” Children's products have to comply with CPSIA; general use products do not. “But,”
Brenner asks, “Is it a good thing that certain products can be sold for use by young children without having to comply with
child safety laws? Not for the promotional products industry,” he responds. “The risk is too great.”
Mr. Brenner, a candidate for PPAI's Board of Directors, poses these questions to distributors: “If a product is going
to be used by children a general use product that is to be used by all ages how would it play in the press if it was revealed
that the product was full of lead or cadmium or phthalates? What embarrassment could that cause your customer if it became
viral or on the web or, heaven forbid, the subject of a Keith Morrison expose on Dateline? Can you imagine the phone call
you would get asking how you could have put the company in that position?”
“Large corporations are risk averse. It wouldn't take too many high-profile fiascos for these businesses to decide
that promotional products are too risky. Insist that all products you sell and particularly those for which children may be
involved are compliant with the new 100 ppm lead standard and all other applicable provisions of the CPSIA,” advises Mr.
Brenner.
The complete text of Mr. Brenner's article can be viewed at http://rickbrenner.com. Mr. Brenner was Co-chair of
the PPAI's first Product Safety Summit held this past August in Denver. He is a member of PRAG - PPAI's Product
Responsibility Action Group and a founding board member and Compliance Committee Chair of the Quality Certification
Alliance (QCAlliance.org).

Education Session,
4th Quarter Selling
huge success
Tony Guerra, MAS
of Maple Ridge Farms
and
Jeff Shaw of
Shaw Print and
Promotion
We all know that it is sales that keep our companies alive, and the
more knowledge we have on selling the products and services of the
promotional products industry, the better edge we have in the
market. Attendees were given insights into selling food products,
calendars and other 4th quarter stars. Each attendee received a 3
ring binder to build their 4th quarter vendor catalog file. A
salesperson's time is one of the assets they cannot afford to waste this
session was not a waste their time. If you did not attend this session,
you missed great tips and selling information that was presented by
experienced, knowledgeable experts of selling.
The show floor attendance was strong all day with
distributors from all over the state of Ohio Cleveland, Canton,
Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, Toledo, and West Virginia, just to name
a few. There was also a strong supplier showing of 105. This was a
great day of doing business and networking.
To kick the OPPA 4th Quarter Sales Show off, a
networking and social event was held at Rooster's Restaurant. The
food was great (wings were wow) and the fellowship between
distributors and suppliers was awesome. Everyone had a fun filled
evening and talked about the industry, its' future, golf and of course,
PUT-IN-BAY – how could you not talk about the Island and the
unique opportunity distributors will have to take their sales teams to
the Island to inspire one another to grow sales?
Donna Vorce was Show Chair and Rob McCabe was CoChair. Donna is a distributor, First Impressions, and Rob is a
supplier, Get It Global. Michelle Stark Fulks, distributor, Stark and
Associates, is the Social Chair. Jeff Shaw, distributor, Shaw Print and
Promotion, is the Education Chair. Together they made an
awesome team to head the board of directors in making this the best
OPPA Fall Table Top Show yet.

Emmy gets
a plane ride
R.S. Owens begins the Angel Flight CHICAGO Sept 12, 2011 R.S.
Owens welcomed United Airlines and Fox TV News at its Chicago facility
Monday as the Fox TV crew filmed the official “EMMY AWARDS
TRANSFER” ceremony. As the official manufacturer for the Primetime
Emmy Awards, it is fitting that Chicago-based United Airlines, the official
airline partner of the Primetime Emmy Awards get the VIP treatment as the
awards were received for transportation to Los Angeles.United Airlines
learned about the steps for making the classic Emmy Statue from casting
and polishing to plating and packaging. Fox TV news filmed the
experience as Jorge Marroquin; the R.S. Owens General Manager
explained the steps taken to maintain the heavy 24-karat gold plating. To
plate 24k, the casting is first washed in a copper acid tank. The second step
is immersion in nickel and the final plating layer comes from submersion in
the 24 karat gold tank. On Sept 15, 2011, it was United Airlines turn to
give the VIP treatment as the Emmy Awards were flown to the Los Angles
red carpet for their 2011 award debut on Sunday, September 18!
