As I reflect on the history of CABPES, I am amazed at
how CABPES has managed to exist and remain vibrant
for 33 years. I ask myself what is it that has been the
nucleus and hallmark of the CABPES organization for so
long. We see so many nonprofit organizations folding all
over the state and elsewhere during these turbulent
times. Then I am reminded of the dedication and commitment of the
professional volunteers that donate their time, talent and money to the
organization year after year. I am reminded of the commitment and passion
Mr. Ron Fontenot has shown to CABPES for 33 years. CABPES has many other
volunteers that have served in the organization for over 20 years. Most of the
volunteers serving on the CABPES board have been doing so for 10 years or
more. The CABPES board is a working board. For example, board members
coordinate all of the CABPES programs which include the Junior Engineers
Tomorrow’s Scientists (JETS) Program, Math Enrichment Program (MEP),
SAT/ACT College Preparatory Program and the Summer Math Boot Camp. In
addition board members currently teach JETS classes such as Logo Robotics and
aerospace engineering. Others JETS classes taught by board members in the
past include biomedical engineering and construction. The CABPES newsletters,
special events and annual banquets are designed, coordinated and managed by
CABPES board members.
Then there are the CABPES volunteers that have been teaching and tutoring in
the JETS and MEP programs for many, many years. CABPES has business
owners, professional engineers, construction managers, architects, PhDs and
medical doctors teaching the students their chosen professions. CABPES is very
proud of the dedication and commitment of Mr. Rod McKinney, a retired math
teacher that is so passionate about helping underserved students improve their
math skills and aptitudes.
I have concluded the success and longevity of CABPES reside in the hearts and
souls of its dedicated volunteers. CABPES has seen at least three to four
thousand students come through its doors in the past 33 years and these
passionate volunteers are still standing and eager to serve. In a global and
competitive world that revolves around science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM), we encourage students and parents to take advantage of this
great STEM talent, knowledge and experience. CABPES has a proven track
record in educating and developing Junior Engineers Tomorrow’s Scientists.
Blessings
Dewey

Thank You
CABPES would like to thank PCL Construction and the Department of Aviation & Aerospace
Science Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) for providing our students with
an experience they will never forget!
Student Spotlight:
Lucas Utke, 14, Denver School of
Science and Technology, 8th Grade
Q: Why did you join CABPES?
It looked like a great opportunity to understand
mechanical engineering and robotics.
Q: What are your other hobbies? I like Lego’s, reading,
fencing and fiddle.
Q: What are your plans for the future? I plan on going
to college to become an engineer. A Mechanical
Engineer looks like an incredible career that will never
lose value in society.
Did you know…
That CABPES students came from 44 different schools last
year?

Advisory Board Spotlight: Eddie Koen, Business
Development Manager, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver
Q: How long have you been associated with
CABPES? I joined the advisory board in September
of 2013.
Q: Why did you join the CABPES Advisory Board?
CABPES helps to prepare students for emerging
careers in engineering, technology, and science.
In Colorado, some of our key industries include
advanced manufacturing, aerospace, bioscience, electronics, energy, and engineering. Since the supply of
domestic graduates in the sciences is on the decline, CABPES role
in our economic development is more critical than ever.
Q: What do you wish to accomplish as an advisory board
member? As an advisory board member, I want to help strengthen
CABPES' infrastructure so we may have another successful 30 years
reaching more kids and strengthening our programs. I also want to
strengthen our strategic partnerships and collaborations with key
stakeholders, businesses, and other nonprofits.
Q: Name two things you’d like to see CABPES do in the future. I
would love to see CABPES to have a direct employment pipeline
with companies that volunteer. In the future, I would like to expand
to working with local universities, including community colleges.

Our Mission: CABPES was founded in the late 1970’s by a group of African-American
engineers who shared a desire to increase the minority representation in technical
professions. Our mission is to encourage and assist African-American and other underrepresented minority youth in the pursuit and attainment of career choices in engineering and
applied science professions.
