Professional Instructors As an experienced team of teachers, we nurture and mentor our campers and help them discover more about who they are in a safe and creative environment. Below are short biographies and a favorite quote from each Professional Instructor. “I am UNboreable in the great outdoors.” — P. J. Rourke Dana Altman,Visual Arts, graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Art Education. After teaching in Vermont for a number of years, she joined the Thornton Academy faculty in 2013 and continues to teach visual “I can’t wait until Next Summer!” — Camper 2014 438 Main Street, Saco, Maine ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” — Thomas Merton Emma Campbell, Dance, is an alumna of Thornton Academy and Bates College. Currently directing Thornton’s Dance Program, Emma teaches dance technique, directs the repertory group, choreographs for theatre productions, as well as teaching in private dance studios and working professionally with SONARdance. “I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what is Summer Arts Justine Frappier, Visual Arts, is a graduate from the University of Southern Maine with a BFA in Art Education. Justine teaches visual art to elementary students in southern Maine and enjoys working in clay, painting, photography, and printmaking. Justine has a passion for bringing out the artist in every student. “Earth without Art is just eh.” — Unknown Jenna Guiggey, Music, is a graduate student at the University of Southern Maine School of Music, studying vocal pedagogy. Through her time at USM, she is extremely active in performing, especially in the USM Chamber Singers and Chorale. She is very excited to share her love of music again this year! “Music is the shorthand of emotion.” — Leo Tolstoy David Hanright,Theater, received his BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art and has taught visual arts and theater at TA since 1994. He has directed the Theater Program at Thornton since 2005 and has both acted and designed for Community Theater in Maine , as a board member of the Legacy Theater and now with Maine Repertory Theater. “There’s a reason we call them plays.” Carol LaBonte, Culinary Arts, believes that children about the importance of good nutritional habits when they participate in cooking activities. Carol has been part of the Thornton Academy faculty since 2000 and teaches Current Issues in Wellness and Nutrition and Healthy Cooking. “This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook - try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!” — Julia Child Keil Martin, Physical Education, received his BA in Communications and Public Relations at St. Joseph’s College where he played four years of collegiate baseball and ran cross country. Keil is a devoted teacher at Thornton with his students. “Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game.” — Michael Jordan Thornton Academy Camp for Kids About the Director Jodi Thomas, Director, is an artist and has been teaching visual arts since 1996. Campers will explore and discover their unique talents as they express and communicate through the visual arts, music, theatre, dance, culinary arts, and physical education. “Look deep into Nature, and then you will understand everything better.” — Albert Einstein Each year the professional staff designs and implements engaging and age-appropriate activities around one theme. This year’s theme is “The Great Outdoors!” Join us as we act, play and make art celebrating the natural beauty of the world around us! The week in 2015 Arts Camp runs July 13-17, 2015, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 3PM daily, for children ages 8-12. The cost of Arts Camp is $180 for each camper for the weeklong session. Register early and save with full payment of $170 postmarked by April 1st. Please use one registration form per camper and print the following information carefully: Each day begins with all campers joining together for Circle Time to discuss the day and upcoming events. Campers are grouped by age and follow a rotating schedule of activities where they participate in projects and activities in each subject based on the week’s theme. At the end of each day, groups gather to share their experiences and creations and to play outside games.
