Preparations underway in Massawa in connection with
commemoration of Silver Jubilee of Operation Fenkil
Woldegergis, said that extensive
preparations are being made for
the commemoration of the Silver
Jubilee of Operation Fenkil due
to take place under the theme “
Fenkil: Harbinger of Total Liberation.”
In a press statement she gave
to the national media outlets, Ms.
Tsegereda said that carnivals, camp
of struggle, community festivities,
documentary films and pamphlets,
education-related contests, sports
competitions, pictorial exhibitions,
narration and visit of historic sites,
among others, would feature in the
course of the event.
The regional Administrator explained that that the event is scheduled to take place next month and
that the specific days would be
announced shortly through media
outlets.

NUEYS finalizes preparations for hosting
WFDY-African Commission meeting
The National Union of Eritrean
Youths and Students (NUEYS) has
been finalized preparations for hosting the World Federation of Democratic Youths-African Commission
meeting from 21 to 23 January here
in Asmara under the theme “African
Youth United for Peace, Sustainable
Development and Fighting Against
Imperialism.”
Mr. Daniel Eyasu, head of external affairs of the NUEYS, pointed
out that the meeting is aimed at assessing activities of the organization
over the past 6-months and conducting discussion on its perspectives,
in addition to making the necessary
preparations for taking part in the
World Youth Festival due to take
place in Namibia next May. He also
noted the significance of the meeting in portraying Eritrea’s correct
image to youths around the world.
Mr. Daniel went on to disclose
that the NUEYS has been making
preparations for the meeting since
last December, and that programs
portraying the stance of the organization, seminars by cadres of the
Government and the PFDJ, highlighting the nation’s tourism sites
and the policy of the Eritrean government as regards ensuring national dignity and development endeavors would be given due attention in
the course of the meeting.
Youth representatives of organizations in Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Ghana, Sudan, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, CongoBrazzaville, Algeria, Libya, among
others, are expected to participate in
the meeting here, he added.
The World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) was established in 1945 and strives for promoting peace and friendship among
peoples and respect to human rights,
in addition to combating domination and hegemony.

NUEYS has finalized preparations
for the holding of Youth Week of
Gash-Barka and Sudan’s Kessala
region in Barentu city from 17 to 19
January.

Brig. General Gebrehiwet
Zemichael passes away
Veteran fighter Brig. General Gebrehiwet Zemichael
(Wedi-Liqe) passed away on
January 13 at the age of 59
due to sudden illness.
The late Brig. General Gebrehiwet joined the popular
liberation forces in 1973 and
served in various capacities
both before independence
and after the attainment of
Eritrea’s total liberation.
The veteran fighter is married and father of three.
Expressing deep sorrow
over the passing away of
Brig. General Gebrehiwet
Zemichael (Wedi-Liqe), the
Ministry of Defense conveys
condolence to the bereaved
family of the veteran fighter.

14th Festival of Eritrean community members in
Australia and New Zealand conducted with zeal
The 14th Annual Festival of Eritrean community members in Australia and New Zealand was conducted in the city of Melbourne
from 8 to 11 January with zeal. It
was opened by Ambassador Girma
Asmerom, Eritrea’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Yasin Omar, Eritrean Consul General
in Australia and New Zealand, and
Mr. Mihreteab Berhe, Chairman of
National Holidays, welcomed the
participants and gave briefings regarding the role of such events in
reinforcing national unity, bequeathing national values to the young
generation and preserving culture.
Solidarity messages were conveyed on the occasion pertaining to
the pace of development drive in the
nation by the Mayor of Melbourne
city, representatives of Australian
mining companies operating in Eritrea, spokesmen of Fred Hollows
Intra-Ocular Laboratory and friends
of Eritrea.
At a seminar he conducted, Ambassador Girma Asmerom as a senior government envoy, pointed out
that thanks to the persistent endeavors exerted, coupled with steadfastness and dedication of the Eritrean
people, a number of development
programs have been implemented. He also called on the citizens to
become full beneficiaries of investment opportunities.
The 4-day event witnessed the
staging of research papers by students focusing on the significance of
education and organization, coupled
with pictorial exhibition, sports activities, cultural performances and
fashion show, among others.

will and initiative by the Eritrean
government to make sure education
and any other skill upgrading training is provided to the youth of this
country. Since youth are the vanguards of any sort of development
and as they also have the power to
shape the future of any given nation,
investing on them is investing on a
nation’s growth. Economic growth
does not only mean putting network
of infrastructures in place or setting
up industrial plants or building different service rendering institutions
alone but is mainly empowering
youth’s multifaceted competence.

Eritrean youth are known for the
victories they achieved in different
domains. They do not want to keep
such success stories for themselves
alone, but they are always ready
to share such an experience with
their counter parts in Africa or any
youth’s association in any part of
the world.
Youths are creators, developers,
defenders, guarantors of secured future of their given nation. However,
all youths do not have the same experience and thus they need to share
experience and views by creating a
venue for mutual understanding.
Raising the awareness of youth

relations is highly essential to a na-

the principle of sharing views and
experiences that the NUEYS has
continued to work with different
international institutions with an
aim of creating a viable ground for
transfer of experiences.
As a continuation to its previous efforts, the National Union of
Eritrean Youths and Students (NUEYS) is making preparations to
host a regional meeting in Asmara
from January 21 to 23 in collaboration with the World Federation of
Democratic Youth (WFDY).
According to reports from the
NUEYS, representatives from 30
to 50 heads of youth organization
from over 20 Sub-Saharan African
countries are expected to participate in the meeting. The meeting
is expected to make significant contribution to portray Eritrea’s correct
image and its rich cultural heritage
and living style of the people.
The participants of the meeting
would have a chance to witness the
efforts that have been exerted towards enhancing the role of youth in
the nation-building process through
keeping intact national values. They
would also share their respective
experiences in their nations.
Eritrean youth have been building their nation diligently and the
Eritrean government has continued
to nurture them through providing
tuition free education. Through
education the youths of the country have been made aware of issues
in different disciplines. Since due
attention is being given towards
equipping them with the necessary
knowledge and skill, satisfactory
outcome is being registered.
This is not the first time for the
NUEYS to host a regional meeting
in which representatives of different youth associations from different African countries took part.
African youth have common
challenges and they have a number
of issues that could bring them together. So, having a regional meeting where they could discuss issues
of mutual concern is expected to
bring a remedial solution to most of
the challenges they face.
The youth are indeed real engines
of a moving economy. If youth continue to educate themselves, and
upgrade their awareness in different
issues through exchanging views,
the real growth would be achieved
along the engine (education) that
makes youth move forward. Youth
are the real engines of development
and their engine is education and
awareness in different disciplines.
Thus, enhancing their competence
they are reinforcing the economy
of their nation. Sharing their own
experience with their counter parts
means they are learning different
experiences too, youth-the real engine of development.

has mankind harmed earth or made it a better place? Today’s ‘On the Table’ shall look into this issue briefly.
Opportunism
beyond Measure

A scientist remarked that if bacteria are
wiped out of the face of the earth, all life
forms will come to an end in the next 50
years; however if humans are wiped out of
the face of the earth life form will flourish.
Not this might be a bit of an extreme remark
but it was forwarded to make a point that
humans have negligible effect to all other life
form as far as ecological interdependence
is concerned. That is of course if not for
destructive role. But if got you thinking that
we have so little to contribute to the wellbeing of other life form but seem to consume
the life out of the planet there by making life
difficult and sometimes even impossible for
all other life forms in it.
One of the most remarkable destructive
things humans have incurred to the planet is
of course the conspicuous climate change.
What is most interesting in this issue is that
the aftermath is not only affecting other life
in the planet but put human at the center of its
consequences. What is more is the shocking
shortsightedness of human as the action
could be reversed. A group of climatologist
suggest that climate change can be tracked
without major disruption to the status quo of
the economy and living standard of people.
All that is needed is a smart policy changes.
These will create new job opportunities;
the economy will continue to grow; and the
major contributors of greenhouse gases will
be both ecologically and financially better

If we have such alternative then what
could be the problem for not trying them
already? I think humans are incapable of
conceptualizing a world without them and
that somehow we will survive. But the
question is should we jeopardize our life
and our existence as species on a hunch,
“somehow”? It is too big a risk to be taken
so lightly. The reality therefore is a good
enough reason to conclude that humans have
harmed the earth and are still continuing
to do so. The only time we should even
contemplate to think otherwise will be the
day we set foot to address the issue with the
magnitude of effort it really deserves.
So I say humans are opportunist species
that have taken free ride in the world they
were supposed to share with other life form.
In doing so they have done so much worse
than good. What do you say?
Mankind is the most sophisticated creature on the face of
the earth, blessed with the most
valuable generosity of nature,
ingenuity. Through this precious
gift, humanity has made astounding progress over the thousands
of years of its history. Early development of the human world
began with the evolution of the
specie to make itself adapt the
harshest conditions of nature and survive
the grimmest and the most unpalatable conditions of nature, over the stretch of thousands of years. Later, humanity learned to
manipulate and use such forces into its own
advantage. Today, with all the sophistication
and advancement of science and technology,
it wouldn’t be too bold to claim that mankind has reached to the level where it could
challenge the most intimidating forces of
nature. Indeed, we are still far from claiming that our specious has mastered forces of
nature. The inherently wild and unpredictable ways of nature are, to mischievous to
be kept under total control. That considered
as given nevertheless, mankind have developed so many ways of confronting some of
the most unforgiving forces of our planet
and beyond.
Through the astonishing and ever broadening ingenuity, people have made the world
a better place to live in for themselves. They
have tamed and domesticated wild animals
and plants, and have fashioned wild natural terrains and made them farm lands and
grazing areas. They have learned ways to
navigate the scorching surfaces of deserts,
the shadows of forests, the majesty of mountains and the depths of valleys. They have
devised the means to delve the secrets of the
earth deep beneath the surface. They have
found ways to explore the surface and depth
of massive lakes, rivers, seas and oceans.
They have invented machines that allowed
them to explore the sky, the space, the moon,
other planets and the solar system in general.
And most importantly, they have found and
learned the means that would allow them
to exploit the bounties of the natural world
they could discover to adapt their needs and
make their lives better.
A few weeks ago I have watched on BBC
that scientist are studying the regenerating
ways of the body to explore the possibility of re-growing parts of the body, such
as arms and legs, lost due to different accidents. On the same program, I have watched
that scientists are also working on to heal
paralysis by reviving damaged parts of the
nervous system. And the good news is that
they have made some significant progress in
the area that there are actually people, once
paralyzed below the waist, who are able to
feel their feet again. Through this and other
advanced areas of health science, today, although far from success, humanity is literally challenging mortality.
It is impossible to list out all triumphs
that the human race has accomplished in
the course of bettering life on earth. And at
the same time, the collateral damage on the
natural world that resulted in the course of
this progress is, undeniably, vast. But the
most important question here is, ‘Are we
living better life than our ancestors done
centuries ago?’ Is the earth a better place to
live in today for humanity than it used to
be a thousand years before? I have no doubt
the answer, here, world be positive.
Some might argue human beings have
damaged the earth and made it worse for
other creatures of the earth. However, survival of the fittest is a law of nature. Mankind would do what it has to do to survive
and to make its existence better. Here, the
argument is not that the human race should
not heed no attention at all to other creatures
of the planet, it should. But, mankind, like
every life form on this planet, will also put
its survival and welfare first. After all, every
creature, to all its ability, puts other creatures to harm as it strives to survive. And as
far as the welfare of the earth is concerned,
nature has its own way of maintaining its
own equilibrium. What do you say?

Christianity and its remarkable political influence
in the U.S. Think of political Zionism, both in Israel and the U.S. Think of the BJP and the myriad
Sangh Sabha organizations in India who want a
Hindu state as the surest guarantee for the defense
of Hindu tradition. And think of radical Islamist
groups that want an ‘Islamic state’ as a guarantee
of a return to Islam.
My point is that we are seeing a resurgence of
movements around the world that speak the language of nativism, tradition and religion. Not all
of them are reactionary. We should be careful not
judge the contents largely by the packaging. In my
view, the debate inside tradition and religion is as
important the debate between secular and religious
traditions.
Soon after 9/11 happened, you wrote: “Ascribing the violence of one’s adversaries to their
culture is self-serving: it goes a long way toward
absolving oneself of any responsibility.” Do you
see European policies on immigration and assimilation of minorities at home (or the failure to
do that very well) as contributing to terrorism?
The French like to think of themselves as the
custodians of the tradition of liberty, equality and
fraternity. That is true but it is not the whole truth.
The French also need to think of the dark side of
their tradition: the colonial tradition, both in IndoChina and Africa. The French need to recognize
that the Algerians, the North Africans and the West
Africans from the former colonies are in France
as immigrants, because the French were in their
countries in the first place. These immigrants have
run away from the consequences of colonialism.
If the solution – France - has turned sour, where
do these immigrants run to now? To an imaginary
Islamic state? If a second or third generation North
African is still considered an immigrant in France,
should that not provide us a clue as to the nature of
the problem? Where lies the problem, the promise of the Islamist state, or the reality of immigrant
lives in contemporary France, or both?
Do you see an intensification of the post-9/11
type of Islamophobia emerging in these countries now that the murders have provided further justification?
9/11 was centrally planned, organized and executed. In contrast, Charlie Hebdo was locally
planned and executed, even if the strategy and the
sanction was central. This is one difference we need
to appreciate. The response to the Danish Cartoons
was in the main a street-level response of ordinary
Muslims who saw themselves as being framed and
set up by forces of bigotry. The Charlie Hebdo killings were done by a military cell, coordinated and
guided from a centre. This was a strategic strike,
not a spontaneous demonstration. This is a second
difference we need to appreciate.
The tragedy is that neither the left nor the centre
seem to take these differences as the starting point
for their response. So long as a knee-jerk response
is the order of the day, I am afraid we will concede
both intellectual and political leadership to the
right. If this trend continues, Islamophobia is likely to grow from an intellectual tendency to a hate
movement in France and other sections of Europe.

“… For many reasons, whenever I am busy: I feel loneliness.
Matter of fact the busyness of
the real world; in the conscious
world interpretation aligned with
the sense of loneliness. Like
I have said several times, it is
hard to be alone in the presence
of my instances. “Alone” in this
context has a different meaning
from its usual one. By alone I
mean the absence of “thinking”,
“contemplating”, “assimilating”
and “attempting”; the absence of
the activity so called “reflecting”
within the universal context of
consciousness. Busy on the other
hand means extreme loneliness
in the real world meaning. By
the time one sets himself busy, it
logically means that he, intentionally or unintentionally opted to be
alone. Wait! I haven’t slipped into
the core of the idea I would like to
share here. Busy, when especially
is associated with worldly things
is logically translated into selfcenteredness. Thinking about this
or that or acting in such a manner
drives the collective human figure
into a selfish individual.
Busy in the context of ONE does
not have the ears to hear, the eyes
to see and in general the senses to
feel the quests of MANY. In other
words it is also described as the
objective world and the subjective
world. When the driving force for
an individual is only the objective
world, his cumulative result is
individual material prosperity (if
achieved) or physical and mental
crave for such prosperity – and
that leads to extreme loneliness
in the subjective world. And if
one’s driving gear is the subjective world, his cumulative result
is communal mental and spiritual
prosperity. The huge difference
lies between I and WE. The ‘WE
mindset’ is rare and the ‘I mindset’
gets to be dominant self. I completely hate myself when it tends
towards the ‘I sense’. My whole
time longing is to be within the
WE sense. When I can’t connect
with my colourful instance. And
on the other hand my perfect connection with my instances reflects
that I have acquired the commu-
nal mindset. In a circle of collective reflection we get ourselves
tuned into the ‘WE sense’.
Now I have to be grateful to the
universe, for I am able to sense,
detect and get connect with few of
my instances. I see that they have
precious words and ideas to share.

By the time I saw Mr. N, the
Narrator instance of me reflecting
his narration from the stage of the
CC Conference Hall, I was completely captivated by my great expectations of what he was going
share with us. Unlike the other
times, now Mr. N was shiningly
marvellous. Of course that magnificence it is in his essence was
not the result of jewelleries or
cosmetics. It was a beauty from
within: an internal glorification
of sensation, intelligence, energy
and above all wisdom.

and collective consciousness. For
a brief understanding purpose I
have included side notes regarding the terms – cloud computing
and collective consciousness.
Step by step we will deal with the
detail of these terms. Let us now
take a little rest. By rest I mean,
let us think, associate, assimilate,
compare and contrast in accepting
resulting term – conscious cloud.
Using Conscious Cloud or by
the application of Conscious
Cloud we dream to build Smart
Cities – cities with smart environment, smart energy, smart mobility and collectively smart people.
Collective
Consciousness
Collective consciousness was a term coined by the French sociologist Émile Durkheim (1858–1917) to refer to the shared beliefs and
moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within society. One
might recommend collective conscience as a superior translation of
Durkheim’s concept, in part due to the busy association of the word
“consciousness” with both Marxist and Freudian thought, but also
as “a conscience for Durkheim is pre-eminently the organ of sentiments and representations; it is not the rational organ that the term
consciousness would imply.”
Durkheim argued that in traditional/primitive societies (those based
around clan, family or tribal relationships) totemic religion played an
important role in uniting members through the creation of a common consciousness (conscience collective in the original French). In
societies of this type, the contents of an individual’s consciousness are
largely shared in common with all other members of their society,
creating a mechanical solidarity through mutual likeness.
The totality of beliefs and sentiments common to the average
members of a society forms a determinate system with a life of its
own. It can be termed the collective or creative consciousness.

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service
rather than a product, whereby
shared resources, software,
and information are provided
to computers and other devices
as a metered service over a network (typically the Internet).
Cloud computing describes
a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT
services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves
provisioning of dynamically
scalable and often virtualized
resources. It is a by-product and
consequence of the ease-of-access to remote computing sites
provided by the Internet. This
may take the form of web-based
tools or applications that users
can access and use through a
web browser as if the programs
were installed locally on their
own computers.
At the foundation of cloud
computing is the broader concept of infrastructure convergence (or Converged Infrastructure) and shared services.This
type of data center environment
allows enterprises to get their
applications up and running
faster, with easier manageability and less maintenance, and
enables IT to more rapidly adjust IT resources (such as servers, storage, and networking) to
meet fluctuating and unpredictable business demand.

It has been very cold these past
few days. While it’s typical of the
season for such a chilly weather,
Eritreans have a legend that believes the cold and the icy winds
supposedly drown away in the
Timket water… That’s nothing
short of some sort of traditional
meteorology techniques.
All we have to do now is just
wait a couple of days to see if that
legend will deliver its promise.
Because after two days, that is on
Monday January 19, Christians
will celebrate Timket, the typical
religious festival commemorating
the anniversary of the baptism of
Christ in the river Jordan by John
the Baptist.
Timket, or Epiphany as it is commonly known in English, at times
create confusions in the naming.
While Timket literally means baptism, Epiphany, especially in the
western countries, evokes a different significance: the visit of the
Three Wise Men, which commemorates the first revelation of Jesus
Christ as the Savior. That could
probably explain the choice of
the word Epiphany, which comes
from the Greek word epiphaneia
meaning appearance.
Timket has been observed start-
ing from as far as 200 AD in the
Western churches and is sometimes called the Twelfth Day. In
fact, in the Julian calendar, which
the Eritrean Christians (including Eastern Churches) observe
strictly when it comes to religious
holidays, Timket always falls
exactly on the twelfth day after
Christmas.
In Eritrea, the day is particularly celebrated in a colorful manner
in Asmara. The gathering at Mai
Timket, a wide water basin with
a statue depicting John the Baptist baptizing Jesus Christ erected
in the middle, has always been a
landmark event, both for locals
and foreigners.
Thousands of the Christian
faithful attend early morning Mass
featuring preaching, ceremonial
dances of the priests and spiritual
songs.
The ceremonies and rituals of
Timket, which offer a direct window onto the world of the Old Testament, actually commence early
in the afternoon on Timket Eve.
The tabot (a replica of the Ark of
the Covenant and the tablets of
the Ten Commandments Moses
received on Mount Sinai) is carried by priests from each church
to the body of water, accompanied
by the faithful and members of the

clergy chanting, dancing, beating
drums and waving prayer sticks.
As evening falls, the priests and
the gathered crowd participate
in an overnight vigil and Mass
around the Arks.
Following Mass, the Patriarch
of the Eritrean Orthodox Church,
usually in the presence of the Governor of the Central Region and
invited dignitaries, dips a golden
processional cross in the water to
bless it and then sprinkles some
on the faithful. This is to serve as
a reminder of baptism – the remission of sins and that through the
baptismal waters a person accepts
the obligations of Christian commitment.
Tourists and other foreigners
most of the time erroneously attribute the festival as an annual
rebaptism while it’s only a commemoration.
After the ceremony is concluded, the celebration reaches its climax as everyone charges forward
to the water basin (many actually
jump into the water) to fill their
containers with the blessed water,
to later take it home for private
devotions.
Although it has come declining
over the past years, young children had this irritating, but funny
for the beholder, habit of emptying their cans or containers over
unsuspecting people in the streets
outside, leaving them drenched in
the chilly morning.
It gets even worse. Some fifteen
or so years ago, my sister wanted
to fill her container herself and not
sooner than she approached the
basin that she found herself being
carried and thrown into the water.
I still remember how we laughed
when we saw coming all dripping
wet and shivering. That’s just typical of Timket Day.
One of the events that add color
to the festival actually takes place
after the ceremony at Mai Timket.
The tabot of each church in Asmara is paraded in a long procession through the streets with the
priests dressed in their elaborate
robes followed by huge crowds.
When moving the tabot, which
is rarely seen by the laity and is
accorded extreme relevance, it is
reverently wrapped in rich cloth
and carried on the head of the
priest with colourful ceremonial
umbrellas to shade it. Children
from the city’s different Sunday
schools sing various hymns while
accompanying the tabots to their
respective churches.

Many a time important events in the global arena are not presented in their entirety in mainstream media as there is lack of context in most of the information
they cover. In response, this column sets out to question this trend by presenting diverse perspectives from as many sources as possible with the underlying aim of
bringing to fore context that is culturally, historically, politically and economically relevant to any given topic.
‘Charlie Hebdo cartoons are bigoted’
Blasphemy involves critiquing a tradition from within, of which Islam has had a long and honorable history (Ijtihad), says renowned academic Mahmood Mamdani.
Back with a Prophet Mohammed
cartoon on its cover, Charlie Hebdo,
the French satirical magazine, has
resolved to take on Islamic fundamentalists, after a terror attack on its office premises in Paris last Wednesday
claimed the lives of 10 staff members
including that of its editor, Stephane
Charbonnier. In an email interview
to Vidya Venkat, Professor Mahmood
Mamdani, Herbert Lehman Professor of Government and Professor of
Anthropology at Columbia University,
author of ‘Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the
Roots of Terror’, explained the difference between critiquing a religion and
ridiculing it, and why it is one thing to
oppose censorship and quite another
thing to reprint Charlie Hebdo cartoons in solidarity. Edited excerpts:
In the wake of the Charlie Hebdo
terror attacks, there is widespread
condemnation of Islam itself. George
Packer, in his New Yorker article, for
example, had held Islam and its tenets
and those believing in them responsible for the attacks. Are we misdiagnosing the problem here?
In my view, George Packer’s is a
knee-jerk response. It fails to recognize
what is new about the Charlie Hebdo
killings. The information we have so
far suggests that it was a paramilitary
operation. Though carried out by a local unit, decentralized in both planning
and execution, the attack was strategized and sanctioned from headquarters. The killings need to be seen as a
strategic and organized military attack.
As such, it is different from the kind
of grassroots demonstrations we have
seen in the past, such as in responses to
the Danish Cartoons.
Proponents of the Charlie Hebdo
brand of humor and satire see the
need to share and endorse the culture
of “free speech”. Your view?
I support the right of free speech as
part of a right of dissent. But that does
not mean that I support every particular exercise of free speech or dissent. It
is well known that the history of free
speech is contradictory. We recognize
it by distinguishing ‘hate speech’ from
other forms of free speech. Some states
ban ‘hate speech’ legally, other states
refrain from a legal ban and leave it to
society to discourage it politically and
morally.
When asked to comment on the Dan-
ish Cartoons on Prophet Mohamed,
the German novelist Günter Grass said
they reminded him of anti- Semitic
cartoons in a German magazine, Der
Stürmer. The New York Times piece
that carried the interview with Gunter
Grass added that the publisher of Der
Stürmer was tried at Nuremberg and
executed. Among those tried in Arusha
following the Rwanda genocide was a
radio journalist. Following mass violence in the Rift Valley in Kenya, the
ICC issued a list of those charged with
crimes against humanity; one of these
was a radio journalist. In all three cases,
the journalists were accused of spreading hate speech.
My own preference is for the political and the intellectual over the legal.
I am against all forms of censorship.
While I think you have a right to say
what you think, I will not support anything you say or write. I also reserve the
right to disagree with you, vehemently
if necessary. It is one thing to support
the right of Charlie Hebdo journalists
to print the cartoons they did, and quite
another to reprint them as an expression
of support.
Blasphemous cartoons with a sexual theme, as some of Charlie Hebdo’s
cartoons were, are not new in Europe.
But in places such as Britain such cartoons, for example, that of Siné published by Penguin books, have been
removed having internalized legal restraint as civility. Is that kind of compromise of power even possible now
with voices in the West strongly condemning the terror attacks and using
it to channelize their collective anger
against Islamic fundamentalism?
Western societies have worked out
internal compromises over time in an
Endeavour to build durable political
societies. The scope and nature of these
compromises are politically defined.
Their thrust is to call a ceasefire in
struggles of great historical significance
in the name of civility. In many Western countries, there are laws against
blasphemy. But they are restricted to
official Christian denominations. For
example, Britain has laws criminalizing blasphemy, as do several other European countries, but they do not apply
to Islam.
Before the Second World War, Jews
were the customary target of satirists
of a particular type. Voltaire, popularly
considered the founding father and
grand defender of the freedom to satire,
was an ardent anti-Semite, and a number of his satires targeted Jews and Judaism. After the Holocaust, Jews were
brought into the Western political fold.
It became conventional to speak of a
Judeo-Christian heritage in the West,
when it had been customary to speak of
a longstanding conflict between Judaism and Christianity before. So, today
the law in many European countries, including France, criminalizes Holocaust
denial. But no law criminalizes the
denial of colonial genocide, including
widespread colonial massacres in Algeria, the country of origin of the largest
number of French Muslims.
The political and social compact in
Europe has been evolving historically.
The state stepped in to moderate the
conflict between ardent Christians and
secular Christians. Jews were included
in this compact after the Holocaust.
Muslims have never been part of this
compact. The Muslim minority in Europe is the largest in France, around 10
per cent. In the Mediterranean city of
Marseille, it is roughly 30 per cent. It
represents the weakest and the most disenfranchised section of French society.
There are more Muslims in the French
police and security services than there
are in al-Qaeda or other terrorist cells.
But you would not know it. At the same
time, the representation of Muslims in
the French elite, whether political, economic or cultural, is nominal, the exception being the French football team,
once led by the legendary Zinnedine
Zidane.
Of course, it is possible to include
Muslims in the social and political
compact in France. But that will take a
major political, intellectual and cultural
struggle. Centers of power – and people
– in France will have to accept that it is
possible to be French and Muslim, that
it is OK for a pious Muslim woman to
wear a ‘hijab’, as it is for a Catholic nun
– so long as this act of piety does not
banish either from participation in the
public sphere. In other words, we are
talking of a political struggle for meaningful citizenship.
You have referred to the case of Siné
published by Penguin Books. I wrote
about it when discussing the Danish
Cartoon controversy. The example
goes back to 1967 when Britain’s leading publishing house, Penguin, published an English addition of a book of
cartoons by France’s most acclaimed
cartoonist, Siné. The Penguin edition of
Massacre was introduced by Malcolm
Muggeridge, and carried a number of
anticlerical and blasphemous cartoons,
some of them with a sexual theme. In
the wake of complaints by a number
of his bookshop friends that the cartoons were likely to offend practicing
Christians, Allen Lane took precipitate
action: He went to Penguin’s Harmondsworth warehouse with four accomplices, filled a trailer with all the remaining
copies of the book, drove away and
burnt them. The next day the Penguin
trade department reported the book ‘out
of print’.
In that same piece, I cited an additional case which is also relevant to this
discussion. This concerns the Amos
and Andy show in the U.S. It began as
a radio program in 1928 and graduated
to prime time television in 1951 and
then a syndicated show in 1953. Every
year, the NAACP would protest that the
show was a racist caricature of black
people, implying that “Negroes are inferior, lazy, dumb and dishonest,” that
every character in the all-Black show
“is either a clown or a crook.” The CBS
turned a deaf year to this, every year,
until the Watts riots in 1965. CBS withdrew the show in the aftermath of the
Watts riots. Even then, CBS’ official
Amos ‘n Andy website said it hoped
that Black people will learn to laugh
at themselves: “Perhaps we will collectively learn to lighten up, not get so
bent out of shape, and learn to laugh at
ourselves a little more.”
That people “need to learn to laugh
at themselves” is often a point made
by publishers of provocative cartoons.
You could place those same words in
the mouth of the publishers of the Danish Cartoons or Charlie Hebdo, and it
would reflect their views accurately,
that the problem with Muslims is that
they lack a sense of humor, and that the
solution is for Muslims to learn to laugh
at themselves. But laughing at oneself is
not quite the same as being laughed at,
especially as a group. Let me return to
the question of what you call the ‘blasphemous cartoons.’ I think they should
be called ‘bigoted cartoons.’
The problem with the ongoing discussion of Charlie Hebdo is that it tends
to confuse bigotry with blasphemy. I
am personally more favorable to blasphemy, but have no time for bigots or
bigotry.
Blasphemy is part of an important
historical practice that involves critiquing a tradition from within. That kind
of capacity for self-critique, for laugh-

ing at oneself, is absolutely necessary
for the ongoing reform of traditions
and cultures in the face of changing
realities, changing mores and changing intellectual constructs. In Islam, the
right to critique tradition from within is
known as Ijtihad. It has a long and honorable history.
It is generally assumed that with the
emergence of modernity, religion as
a social institution loses its hold over
people’s lives and over society in general. But given the emergence of fundamentalist forces, in renewed forms
like IS, do we have to rethink the role
of religion in shaping social phenomena?
You will excuse me if I disagree with
the premise of your question. Durkheim
defined religion as a mode of thought
and practice that defines objects and actions as either sacred or profane. In this
sense, the secular world can be equally
religious: the state takes the place of an
official religion, the flag or the national
anthem becomes sacred objects, and so
on.
Second, the notion that modernity
will civilize the world by doing away
with barbarism and superstition (‘premodernity) has turned out to be a superstition itself. The tendency of modernity
has been to harness pre-modern practices and institutions to modern political
projects, thereby politicizing (and thus
‘modernizing’) them. Both religion and
tradition (in a secular sense) have become politicized. Just think of how the
CIA militarized madressas in Pakistan
to wage the Afghan jihad during the Soviet occupation.
We are going through a resurgence
of politicized religion and politicized
tradition. Think of the parties in Europe that now organize in defense of
‘Europe’ and against immigrants (really Muslims). Think of born-again
